BCIT Electrical Engineering grad Aileen Maynard, employed by Hedgehog Technologies, supports the Tll Yahda Energy solar array project—a Haida-led initiative—located in Masset, Haida Gwaii. Learn more about Aileen Maynard’s journey.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology acknowledges that our campuses are located on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Nations of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam).

For some Northwest Coast First Nations, a Copper—a traditional copper shield—symbolizes wealth and power. Knowledge is power. A Copper gains value the more it changes hands and is broken and put back together. Life can be challenging, but much like a Copper, our students build strength as they gain knowledge and overcome challenges.

Make a difference together

When you join BCIT, you’ll become part of a community of students, faculty, and alumni who have been recognized globally for their contributions. BCIT applied research projects provide our students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the latest technologies and apply that knowledge to find solutions the world needs now.

Applied Research

BCIT students conduct more applied research projects than any other polytechnic in Canada. These projects create practical learning opportunities, build industry connections, and produce new technologies to help meet industry challenges. BCIT students, full-time applied research groups, and faculty researchers collaborate with national and international institutes, organizations, industry partners, and entrepreneurs to discover and create innovative solutions.

Student applied research is integrated into programs in various study areas. From experiential learning and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) to capstone projects, directed studies and Industry Sponsored Student Projects (ISSP), student applied research projects are a central part of your education at BCIT.

Award-winning solutions.

Driven by interdisciplinary applied research, the BCIT MAKE+ team recently developed an award-winning transformative wheelchair—The BEAST (shown above). Their record-breaking project would go on to win Gold at the 2024 CYBATHLON in Zurich, Switzerland.
