FALL/WINTER 2019
Beaulieu Vineyard Celebrates 80th Anniversary of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Napa’s ‘first cult Cabernet’ hits remarkable 80-year milestone with the release of its 2016 vintage. Beaulieu Vineyard has celebrated numerous milestones since founder, Georges de Latour and his wife Fernande, landed in Rutherford in 1900. Beaulieu Vineyard just marked another significant milestone with the official celebration of the winery’s 80th anniversary of its first bottling of the notable Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. In honor of the momentous occasion, the 2016 vintage will be sold at the winery and at retailers across the country in a commemorative 80th Anniversary gift box. On Saturday, August 24th Beaulieu Vineyard hosted a celebratory dinner aboard the famed Napa Valley Wine train, followed by a year-long consumer experience at the winery tasting room themed around the 80th Georges de Latour Private Reserve Anniversary. Legendary Beaulieu Vineyard winemaker André Tchelistcheff was certainly on to something in 1938 when he insisted the de Latour family bottle its “private reserve” wine as the winery’s flagship offering. Today, it is a gold standard for Napa Valley Cabernet. Upholding the heritage and spirit of innovation of those who came before him, Beaulieu Vineyard’s chief winemaker Trevor Durling is confident that sommeliers and Beaulieu Vineyard fans alike will delight in the new 2016 vintage. “We are at a pivotal moment and a very important time in the history of Beaulieu Vineyard,” notes Durling. “The first vintage of Georges de Latour was 1936 and we are now building on that legacy with the release of the 80th vintage. I’m honored to have my name on this label and I believe this is one of the best vintages I’ve had the pleasure to craft in the Napa Valley. Everything we’ve learned in eight decades of winemaking history has allowed us to capture the glorious spirit of this wine, while refining and investing in the vineyards and winemaking technology that contribute so much to its history. It is an honor to be writing the next chapter for such an important wine, and an incredible responsibility that I don’t take lightly.” The 2016 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $150) is bursting with a bouquet of cassis, blueberry, blackberry, violet and wild sage, exhibiting the extraordinary concentration, depth and elegance of this superior vintage. Full-bodied and rich on the palate are lingering flavors of dark blackberry, root spice, chocolate and molasses supported by perfectly balanced acidity which adds length, juiciness and freshness to an everlasting finish. Plush, “Rutherford Dust” tannins support the ever-expansive palate, while seamlessly integrating with the full-bodied texture, crafting a wine that shows grace, ease and approachability now, but with underlying power and structure that will keep this wine alive for decades to come. Well integrated notes of vanilla and toasted oak spices – from aging in new French oak barrels – heighten the aromas and dance on the lengthy finish. To enjoy this wine at its full potential, we recommend at least five years of bottle aging; however, if you can’t wait, decant before serving. 10
Special 80th Anniversary Experience Beaulieu Vineyard is also offering a special 80th Anniversary Georges de Latour Experience for a limited time at the winery, which tells the story of Napa Valley trailblazer Georges de Latour and his ensuing namesake wine, recounting details from the winery’s historical past, to present-day innovations and what’s next for the future. Guests will savor a retrospective array of rare library vintages as well as current releases and a future selection patiently ageing in barrel. Guests will take home a complimentary custom Georges de Latour 80th Anniversary Riedel glass ($50 value) as part of the experience. For more information on the 2016 vintage or to make a reservation for the 80th Anniversary Georges de Latour Experience, visit www.bvwines.com.

WALT Napa Oxbow Opening their doors just this past July is the WALT Wines Tasting Room, directly across the street from the Oxbow Public Market. For the wine lover, WALT is a destination not to be missed. Set inside this historic, renovated 1892 home, a wine journey begins. (WALT Wine is part of the HALL Family of Wines: HALL, WALT and BACA Wines – each a separate endeavor.) WALT is laser-focused on terroir and place – producing exclusively single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir spanning the West Coast. From the Willamette Valley, through Sonoma, Los Carneros, Monterey to Santa Barbara, WALT seeks out distinctive vineyards from which to offer the wine lover select, one-of-a-kind, highly acclaimed, awardwinning wines. Only at WALT can you experience 1000 Miles of Pinot Noir, comparing the difference terroir and geography makes: Your Root 101 Wine & Food Pairing will take place with just a few other select guests. The journey will begin in the Willamette Valley, and glass by glass you will proceed down the West Coast, through the Anderson Valley, Sonoma County, Los Carneros, and Monterey County, ending your adventure in the Sta. Rita Hills. Each distinctive wine will be perfectly paired with bites from Carpe Diem restaurant. Two (mouth-watering) examples of what was paired with my tasting were marinated peaches, Penny Royal goat cheese and toasted pine nuts; and pork rillettes on crostini with chive blossoms. As Jeff Zapelli (WALT General Manager) enthusiastically expresses: “What’s fun about WALT is the rare opportunity to lead guests through an experience of a single varietal, representing so many regions, all while visiting our tasting rooms. In developing the Root 101 tasting experience with a focus on the 1,000 mile journey through Pinot Noir, we 14
tailored the experience to include what the varietal does best by allowing a food element to complement this singular experience. Now, with the WALT Napa Oxbow tasting room open, we get to showcase the wines made from these incredible vineyards lying across the Pacific Coast, with a slightly different take on the pairings honed by incredible Napa chefs. Explore 1,000 Miles of Pinot at the new location, as well as at our Sonoma Plaza tasting room.” WALT’s winemaker, Megan Gunderson Paredes adds, “Sourcing fruit from so many different vineyards along the Pacific Coast is fun and very challenging. I like the different expression of Pinot from each appellation. It’s a lot of hard work, but so worth all of the effort!” As you taste, your personal wine host will guide you through each individual glass along with the pairing. Once finished, you have time to revisit-talk-sip back, and relax. This is an adventure not to be missed, and one you will not forget. More Unforgettable Tasting Options from WALT Wines Satisfy your sweet tooth with the Wine and Chocolate Pairing. Handcrafted artisan chocolates are chosen specifically to accompany each specific glass of Pinot and Chardonnay. Compare different varietals with a Portfolio Tasting, where you will be treated to samples of HALL Cabernet Sauvignon, WALT Pinot Noir and BACA Zinfandel. These each require reservations made in advance. Drop in to visit WALT and explore a Current Release Tasting in the front lounge and tasting bar area. Whatever tasting you choose, it will be an exceptional, sensory experience. Be sure to visit the newly opened WALT/BACA tasting room located at 779 Westside Road, Healdsburg as well. For reservations, call (707) 721-8625. For more information, visit the website at www.waltwines.com.

RALPH HERTELENDY A Napa Valley Rising Star Going for the Gold
By Don Sonderling
Double Gold – Best of Class – 98 points These are accolades recently bestowed on Hertelendy Vineyard’s 2015 Signature Mountain Blend at Sunset Magazine’s 2019 International Wine Competition. Since Ralph released his first wine in 2015, (a 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon), receiving a 95 point score from Robert Parker, Ralph Hertelendy has been on a never-ending quest of perfection. Awards and ratings that have followed only confirm that Hertelendy Vineyards is moving into that very rare space heading toward cult status. As proud as Ralph is of the recognition his wines have received to date, he says he is most pleased by the recognition the 2015 Signature Mountain Blend received. Being 81% Merlot, Ralph said, “Merlot is an elegant grape, and for too many years it has been underappreciated. I want to be at the forefront in helping to bring back Merlot to the status it deserves.”
Who is Ralph Hertelendy? Ralph describes himself as being a “modern Renaissance man.” This is not boastful, it is simply who he is. Aside from establishing himself as a winemaker extraordinaire, Ralph is a linguist, speaking five languages (plus “getting by” in several other languages including Hungarian, his familial language). He is a classical pianist, a sports enthusiast, world traveler, philanthropist (he and his family started a charitable organization, The Hertelendy Foundation), and, most important, husband to his love, Lauren (yes, it’s okay to make the Ralph Lauren joke)! At the age of 38, Ralph Hertelendy has accomplished more than most do in a lifetime, imagine what the future will bring! Sipping a glass (or two) with Ralph, talking about his upbringing, he is quick to point out that the most influential person in his life was his mother. Why? “Because, she believed in me when no one else did.” Ralph has a drive to achieve perfection in everything he does, yet knows, that perfection, in 20
the true sense of the word, is in itself, unattainable. However, while striving for that 100-point “perfect” score, Ralph is constantly planning and looking toward the future. As if supervising his vineyard, making wine, travelling the country introducing his wines, producing electronic music, winning an art competition and participating actively in charity events isn’t enough, Ralph has recently taken on another project – being Consulting Winemaker for Howell Mountain’s Bravante Vineyards, where he is part of elevating their entire wine program. To say his plate is full, is an understatement. Since the first time I spoke with Ralph several years ago, right after his initial release, there has always been a sense of excitement in his voice. He is like the “Energizer Bunny,” he just keeps going and going and going. He loves being challenged, and then harnessing that challenge. He loves creating, even being actively involved in the designing of his labels. (On the next page, see his collaboration with Heavy Metal Magazine for his Cabernet Franc label!) As excited and proud he is of the awards his 2015 Signature Mountain Blend received, Ralph keeps looking forward, saying with excitement, “The best wines I’ve ever produced are sitting in barrels right now (speaking of the 2018 vintage). I can’t wait to taste the finished product; making these is like roasting that one and only perfect marshmallow.” Since his initial release, Ralph Hertelendy has received accolade after accolade, “Napa cult-cab decadence.” “One of the most exciting young wineries in Napa.” “It should merit serious attention.” are only some of the comments accompanying scores of 94-98 from the wine-world’s most renowned critics and Master Sommeliers. However, with all of this, when you ask Ralph his most important accomplishment to date, and his ultimate goal, he replies, with a smile and sparkle in his eyes, “My most satisfying accomplishment to date is marrying Lauren, and, I’d like to start a family someday.” Ralph Hertelendy is a well-balance blend of many different elements, just as his wines are.

Challenges (and Rewards) of Family-Owned Wineries All Hats are Off to Napa’s Small, Family-Operated Wineries Among the 95% family-owned wineries in the Napa Valley, 80% are considered small producers. This relatively large club can be dissected into further groupings, such as the pioneers – those whose proverbial and literal roots are closely tied to the evolution of the Valley itself – or the relative newcomers – those fortunate to have recently realized long-held dreams of making wine in this verdant region. No matter their origin histories, the particular challenges faced by smaller, family-owned and family-operated wineries are similar: marketing resource limitations, distribution and fulfillment issues, guest/visitor expectations, and sheer exhaustion due to the essential donning of several hats. “Small” is often code for “short-staffed.” These vintners do it all, from picking grapes, to bottling, to pouring for appreciative tasters. Their work never ends. Yet the consensus among these industrious families is that the rewards outweigh any hardships.

Alan, Delia & Janet Viader
Viader Vineyards & Winery “The rewards to the dedication and passion my mother and I pour into the business are frankly the quality of the wines we produce,” says Alan Viader, director of operations and winemaking at Viader Vineyards & Winery and son of founder Delia Viader. Alan grew up on the winery’s Deer Park property and since age nine has worked every position in the vineyards and winery. “As a child I walked the vines with my mother and our consulting viticulturalists and winemakers,” says Alan. “Our ability to sense the nuances from one block to the next is unparalleled and our loyal consumers know that. They know we will work the candle at both ends to create the very best possible wine, vintage after vintage. My mother and I talk with our guests and we build long-lasting personal connections with many of them whom we consider extensions of our family, and that is something unique that only family-owned and operated wineries can provide.” Despite the good vibes, Alan concedes to an often frenetic pace. “My mother and I are always busy and

caught-up in the operations of the business, making social lives and free time things that dreams are made of,” he says. “So we make work our social life and spend our free time visiting other wine regions or wineries throughout the world. My mother lives on the property which doesn’t help the matter much. She is always working on something new and coming up with the next grand project for us to execute. Her pursuit for excellence is relentless.”
Stewart Cellars Caroline Guthrie of Stewart Cellars acknowledges the hectic nature of the business. “I wear a few different hats,” she says of her role at her family winery founded by her father, James Stewart in 2000. “I handle all our finances and help oversee operations at our tasting room in Yountville. I do a fair amount of administrative work, like insurance, compliance, bottling supplies, etc. We all kind of do a little bit of everything.” Her husband, Blair Guthrie, is both Stewart’s winemaker and salesman and her brother James Stewart focuses on wholesale and national distribution. He also pitches-in for tasting room events. Caroline says their biggest challenge is competition with the larger corporate-

owned wine brands that have greater marketing resources. “Although we’ve been making wine for nearly 20 years, it feels like we are constantly trying to build brand awareness,” she says. But, the Guthrie/Stewart trio wouldn’t change a thing. “It feels so amazing having people really love and appreciate what we have poured our hearts and souls into.”

Stewart Cellars’ two viable decades are indeed admirable, yet others have thrived in the Valley for a great deal longer. Claiming half a century of continual family ownership and steady success is ZD Wines. family. “When we established our Rutherford winery in the late 1970s, we were primarily a winemaking facility, with little attention given to the tasting and hospitalityexperience,” says ZD winemaker Brandon deLeuze. When asked about his family’s challenges and rewards, “The Napa Valley was very different back then; today we strive to make the ZD guest experience equal to the quality of our wines and exceed expectations on all levels.” Perhaps not so much a challenge as a mission, the family has met its goal with its recently renovated, Rutherford-based hospitality center where guests can find enhanced wine and food offerings. “Ongoing family conversations also center around our quest to seek out growers that are certified organic and who align with our sustainability efforts,” says Brandon. “We have a lot of long-term partnerships outside our estate vineyards, and it is imperative that we nurture those relationships to maintain our high quality standards. The biggest reward for all of us is seeing the enjoyment of consumers who are drinking ZD Wines.” 26

”
Salvestrin Winery, located in the shadows of Spring Mountain, has, since 1932, also remained in the hands of three generations, with a fourth ready and poised to one day continue the tradition. First planted in 1850 by Dr. George Belden Crane, the Salvestrin vineyard has been maintained by the Salvestrin family since patriarch John emigrated from Northern Italy in the ’30s. He, and then his son Ed, sold their grapes to local wineries. These days, Ed’s son Rich serves as winemaker and manager of the sustainably farmed estate. He concedes to the same challenges expressed by his fellow vintners, but agrees that the rewards overshadow the challenges. “In general, we tend to be hardest on the ones we are closest to so sometimes it’s a challenge to balance family life with business,” says Rich. “We do our best to stay focused on the end goal and not get tripped up on the small stuff day to day. Being a small winery can create hurdles for distribution, such as fulfillment for larger accounts, and economic significance for a wholesaler,” he adds. “But it’s really rewarding to handcraft small lots of wine that one is able to literally touch from grape to bottle, share with our customers, and see them enjoy what they are tasting. And, watching our three daughters grow up on the family vineyard that my grandparents started in 1932 is pretty special.”

Modeled after a rambling Italian village, the winery conjures up the boyhood home of its namesake, Mario Andretti, the finest race car driver of all time. He and Joe Antonini, former Chairman and CEO of Kmart Corporation, purchased the Property in 1996 and built a winery fashioned after an Italian Tuscan Villa. Mario and Joe have been honored by the Italian Government by receiving the Commendatore dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana – the highest honor a civilian can receive!

C. Elizabeth Winery A bit newer to the scene are Dave Ficeli and his wife Christi Coors Ficeli. Together, they own and operate C. Elizabeth Winery, a small, highly focused, micro-lot producer (200 cases annually) of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. (Christi also owns and operates Yountville-based Goosecross Cellars, a 5,500-case producer of up to 18 varietals.) The wine-loving duo fell for the Napa Valley during their corporate wine careers and they discussed their winery dream for more than a decade before bringing it to life. “We mostly see the advantages rather than the challenges of owning and operating our own winery,” says Dave, who admits that he needs a reminder now and then that the winery is a business and not just a passion project. Like their fellow vintners, Dave and Christi wear many hats, all while remaining focused on what matters in the moment and not what is currently the greatest distraction. They are conscientious about knowing when the workday stops and family life starts. “We get to do what we love with those we love in the the way we want to do it,” says Dave. “We get to connect with folks who love what we do, and hopefully we are building a legacy for our kids, creating something important that embodies much of what matters to us. And, last but certainly not least, we get to make a wine we love to drink.” 30

Also newer to the Valley are Kisha and Jason Itkin of Theorem Vineyards. The couple purchased their Calistoga property in 2012 and spent the ensuing years rescuing, restoring, and renovating several historically significant buildings on their site, as well as preserving and replanting the Diamond Mountain vineyard. Their flagship Voir Dire and Hawk’s Prey Diamond Mountain Estate Cabernets are testaments to both the duo’s diligence and their vineyard’s vitality. They currently produce 1,100 cases annually. “The biggest challenges also yield the biggest rewards,” says Kisha. “As a small, family run business, our team has to do it all from start to finish – whether that means designing the labels or packing wine for shipment – we have our hands in everything. The time and resources required for that kind of attention to detail can be challenging, but when you see someone have that ‘aha’ moment when they first visit the winery and taste the wines, it is the best reward a winery owner can have.” As a client and promoter of small, family-owned wineries, Kerrin Laz shares her perspective. “I like working with these

wineries because of the relationships we cultivate,” says the former Dean & DeLuca wine director and now owner of two eponymous Napa wine tasting venues that feature unique, small batch, hard-tofind labels. “These wineries are incredibly gracious when we have guests who would like to visit their properties,” says Kerrin. “And, it feels good to support them by helping to promote and market their wines to those that might not know about them or not have access.” “The significance of ‘family owned’ is much more personal and involved than just the literal meaning,” says Alan Viader. “I feel that to be meaningful to our consumers, we need to be involved in the operations. Wine is as much scientific as it is artistic, so there needs to be something or someone behind the label for there to be a
strong tie to that brand. When a family member is involved or was the founding member for instance, there is much more to grab onto as a consumer.” And to that, wine lovers doff their caps and throw their proverbial hats into the air. Cheers.

POPE VALLEY WINERY A Hidden Treasure in Napa Valley Wine Country Take a left as you turn off the Silverado trail away from the hustle and bustle of main stream Napa Valley. Along a winding country road, you’ll see buildings dissipate and give way to undulating rows of vineyards dotted with farmhouses. As you drive past Gus, the friendly chocolate lab, you’ll find one of the most unpretentious, down-to-earth tasting rooms in Napa. This hidden treasure is home of the Pope Valley Winery. The serene, bucolic setting offers a wine tasting experience far away from the ostentatious fare to be found at some of the other wine country destinations. You will be treated less like a visitor and more like an old friend. To reach the Pope Valley Winery requires a short leisurely drive that sets the stage for the winery experience. Winding through picturesque fields, rolling vineyards and oakstudded hills, one gets the feeling of being transported back to old Napa.
While the winery’s roots go back before the 1800s, the next generation of the Eakle family, brother and sister team David Eakle and Diana Eakle Hawkins, takes pride in producing award-winning, twenty-first-century wines while preserving the winery’s authenticity and heritage. Pope Valley Winery gives wine lovers the ability to step back in time and take in 40 acres of history. Let them transport you to an era of days gone by as you tour the historic cave and take in its unique craftmanship with the hand-hewn beams and tall shale walls. The century-old blacksmith shop and the original farmhouse tell a story of the history of Pope Valley. Laugh, sip and unwind … bring a picnic lunch or play a game of bocce while you enjoy our wines and hospitality at this dog- and family-friendly winery. Once you arrive, you won’t want to leave.

The Road Less Traveled “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”* On your next trip to Napa Valley, plan to take the road less travelled, which may make all the difference in your wine tasting experience in this diverse area. The popular Silverado Trail and Highway 29 are lined with easy access, and recognized wineries. However, it is travelling “the back roads” where you will be uniquely rewarded. Take time to leisurely explore areas such as Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain, Angwin/Pope Valley, or the wineries along Sage Canyon Road or Soda Canyon Road. As you leave the more familiar valley floor and discover these “off the beaten track” places, you will be treated to incomparable scenery and views. Soon you will come upon some very special wineries – wineries that have their own story to tell, some reaching well back into the history of Napa Valley. Roaming around Angwin and Pope Valley, you may feel you have stepped back into late 19th century pioneer days, as you come upon historic wineries reflecting the region’s early pioneering life and spirit, such as: • The oldest family-owned winery in Napa County (est. 1890) – whose winemaker has always been a family member – and today is six generations strong • An original wooden Roman Press

• Caves-hand dug in the late 19th century by Italian immigrants • Buildings, photos, legal documents and letters dating back well over 125 years. Next, change directions, driving mountain roads as they twist and turn ascending above the valley floor, and come upon additional treasures that take some effort to get to: • Incomparable vistas of hills, vineyards, forests and lakes – viewed from a comfortable deck as you enjoy your wine tasting. You may even find a panorama stretching as far as you can see, to San Pablo Bay, San Francisco and beyond • Modern, state-of-the-art, truly “green” wineries • An elegant, contemporary winery – its Italian parent winery dating from 1385, still family owned and operated, from generation to generation • Displays of early winemaking equipment used by those who first put down roots in the area. On your next trip to Napa Valley, take “the other” fork in the road. Leave the crowds behind as you savor listening to the wind whispering through trees, the call of the hawks as they circle above, and experience the difference on the roads less traveled. *Robert Frost “The Road Not Taken”

NAPA’S NEXT GENERATION Young, Vibrant, Movers & Shakers – Shaping and Influencing Napa Valley A fresh group of winemakers has been emerging in Napa Valley – creating excitement in the direction they are headed. They are the “next generation,” having learned from those who came before them while looking and planning toward the future. Some of this next generation of leaders grew up in the Valley, others found their way to Napa. They are taking over the reins of leadership, and shaping the future in terms of wine, farming practices, and environmental concerns, while focusing on quality and making wine exciting and fun. Having deep respect for tradition and heritage, they are adding their own personal touch and new dimensions. In 1976, the Judgement of Paris put Napa on the map as a serious wine region. Today, this group, with new vision and energy, is carrying on the past while re-inventing some of the direction Napa Valley is headed. There is a generational handoff taking place, and the next generation is taking up the mantle of responsibility with grace and enthusiasm. This is their time.

‘G4’ – THE MONDAVI FOURTH GENERATION The Family Legacy Continues at Napa Valley’s Oldest Wine Estate: Charles Krug
T
he story of the Mondavi family began about 100 years ago, in a basement in Minnesota, where Rosa Mondavi ran a boarding house. As part of her duties, she guided the men living there in how to make homemade wine for household consumption. These humble beginnings led to one family’s journey in pursuing the American dream, eventually to become an iconic and influential name, synonymous with the history of Napa Valley and its wine culture.
California, he moved his family to the central California town of Lodi in 1922, the heart of the grape shipping industry. Twenty one years later, as a consequence of hard work and success, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi purchased the iconic Charles Krug estate. Established in 1861, Charles Krug is Napa Valley’s oldest winery, and it has remained in the family now for more than 75 years.
A New Legacy Melds Old and New A Napa Original As I sipped wine with Peter Mondavi Jr. a few days before meeting three of the six Mondavi “G4,” he gave me a glimpse into his family history. Cesare Mondavi had started a wine grape shipping business, transporting grapes from California to Minnesota. Realizing he would have better control living in 46
Almost one hundred years after the first Mondavi grapes were pressed in that Minnesota basement, there is a fourth generation carrying on the traditions and legacy started by Cesare Mondavi. Four are the daughters of Marc Mondavi and two are the children of Peter Mondavi Jr., they are referred to as “G4.” I had the pleasure meeting three of this generation:
VERY NAPA VALLEY
FALL/WINTER 2019
Angelina, Alycia and Riana (Marc’s daughters) and talking about their vision for the future. The first thing that hit me sitting down with these three effusive millennials, was the warm feeling of family. I felt as if I was sitting around the kitchen table, having a meal with an Italian “famiglia.” The teasing, laughter, and jesting taking place was infectious, and they all had the same genial smile as their uncle, Peter Jr. It’s no small obligation to carry on a name as reputable and meaningful as Mondavi. It’s even harder to identify new opportunities, open up new frontiers, and create a new legacy that carries on the old traditions. The “G4” take this in stride and are already setting new goals while preserving their history as they write their own personal stories as part of the larger narrative. There is an informal family understanding, that if you want to be part of the family business, following your formal education, it is expected you work a minimum of two years outside of the business, making your own way. Generally, the “G4” put in a far longer time period, as they firmly established themselves in areas that will be beneficial later on. Once joining the family business, there is an unspoken commitment to continue their heritage, while having the freedom to pursue their own path, growing new, exciting shoots and branches from the main Mondavi family tree. Lucio Mondavi (Peter Jr.’s son), is currently gaining valuable experience as an R&D engineer with Lamborghini in Italy. The knowledge he is acquiring overseas, with such a prestigious company, he hopes to one day apply on a larger scale with Charles Krug. Although that is in the future, Lucio also serves on the C. Mondavi & Family Board while also acting as a Charles Krug Brand Ambassador in Italy. Lia, (Peter Jr.’s daughter), also serves as a Brand Ambassador, recently earning a degree in applied math-design. She is seeking opportunities to leverage her education and love of the culinary field by combining the two, hopefully also overseas, as her brother has. This global outlook is the sort of experience that is so necessary to the on-going success of this iconic family business. For Marc Mondavi’s daughters and “G4” members, their past experience has allowed them to gain insights, experience and business acumen that is helping to shape the future of the company. Angelina worked for several years at different wineries in Australia, followed by holding various positions at numerous Napa Valley wineries as assistant and consulting winemaker. Today, Angelina is winemaker and consulting winemaker for family and individual projects, a certified Sommelier, and represents Marc’s children as a member of the Board of Directors. Riana worked as a sales rep in Miami for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, a highly successful (family-owned) wine and spirits distributorship. Riana brings that experience to the business and sales side of the C. Mondavi & Family enterprise. FALL/WINTER 2019
Alycia was a paralegal for five years, then joined a marketing consulting firm, specializing in launching boutique wine brands. Her expertise has been paramount in helping to launch their family labels, Dark Matter and Aloft. Giovanna (or Gigi), is the youngest sister, and has been working in the financial services field, in Boston. Gigi is also a Brand Ambassador. All of the “G4’s” plates are full. The Mondavi sisters bring special skill-sets to the Mondavi operations, fitting perfectly together as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. When I asked if Gigi would eventually join the family business fulltime, all three seemed to say in unison, with a sly grin and laughter: “Oh yeah … she’ll be back.” The love, respect, humor and importance of family was constantly in evidence.
Pursuing Their Own Paths The “G4” have become involved in several new, exciting projects. Aloft is a luxury Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. This family project is composed of Marc Mondavi and his four daughters. This brand is an homage to Marc’s family. Dark Matter is a project exclusively run by Marc’s four daughters focusing on producing a high-end Zinfandel that reflects the sisters’ individual philosophy and expression in winemaking. As Giovanna says, “The story of Dark Matter is to have no boundaries that restrict us and to fear nothing; it is simply about being limitless and pursuing our dreams.” Flat Top Hills: Now launching, this is a new collection of premium wines with bold style. Flat Top Hills combines modern sensibility with deep winemaking tradition to elevate everyday occasions for a new generation of wine drinkers. Angelina is the consulting winemaker. Growing up, the “G4’s” parents kept them firmly grounded, making certain they had “normal” childhoods. From the time they were 10, the girls worked – in the vineyards, at the winery, in a laboratory, helping out at dinner parties. They grew up with the Napa River as their backyard, and in the vineyards-

47
that was their playground. They hung out with other employees’ kids; they even broke into the (deserted) Christian Brothers winery, to go roller blading. The sisters always felt a responsibility to continue their family’s commitments to quality winemaking, but didn’t rely on their famous family name. There is a deeply rooted work ethic present in all the descendants. Riana didn’t realize the importance of the Mondavi name until she went to college. And, Angelina didn’t understand the meaning, or impact of the name until she left for Australia when she was 23! As we chatted, there was a continuous, playful banter going on. These effervescent women kept jumping from one subject to another, commenting, asking questions, telling about their vision, stories of their growing up, while continually playing off each other, and teasing. Their individuality was obvious, but the sum of their parts is what makes up an incredible whole, and a very smart, focused whole they are. One of the sisters mentioned one of the most important things she learned working after college, was the importance of surrounding yourself with people smarter than you, and to learn from them. That was followed up by Riana commenting, “The way I view it is, I’m training my future boss.” They all
strive to be the very best they can be. In terms of today’s younger generation, Alycia is very enthusiastic about the leadership roles women are taking, commenting with unabated laughter, “We all bust our butts, we don’t listen to politics, we just go out and do our best. And we love the influx of bad ass women coming into the industry.” These four women learned much from their grandfather, who told them, “Just keep on doing what you are doing, so long as you love it and are passionate about it.” They were taught a work ethic, the importance of the environment, and taking care of the land by their grandfather, who was a visionary. As to their parents, Riana commented, “Dad’s the one voice of real importance for us, he gives us that extra motivation.” And Alycia added in, “but Mom’s the best kept secret on the road. She is so hands on.” Family, drive, education, love, respect, work ethic, dreams, laughter, fun and always doing your best is what the “G4” is all about. A multi-generation iconic family – siblings and cousins – working together to honor and preserve the past, while exploring new opportunities, paths and visions, to create their own legacy.

JENNIFER BROWN THIRD GENERATION BACA Wines – Honoring a Legacy & Making Wine Fun
O
ne of Jennifer Brown’s most cherished and indelible childhood memories, is playing in the Zinfandel vineyards, owned by her grandparents. Those were carefree days, while growing up in Napa Valley with her parents, Kathryn and Craig Hall of HALL Wines. Those early memories led Jennifer to return to her roots decades later, and introduce her own brand, BACA Wines, focusing on Zinfandel, as a tribute to her grandparents. Jennifer has a friendly, welcoming demeanor, with a huge smile, sparkling eyes, and an outgoing personality, which conveys a feeling of fun; she is someone you’d just like to hang out with and have a good time. Perhaps that’s how she came up with a vision to make the wine experience FUN, without compromising quality. Jennifer is one of an exciting group of a next (and new) generation in Napa, having a clear-cut vision combined with the confidence to help lead Napa Valley in new, exciting directions. Being the third generation of a prominent wine family, Jennifer has a deep personal commitment to grow the current brand, while being a leader and trendsetter for the future. Coming from a family winery that has earned multiple 100 point scores, (plus hundreds of 90+ point scores), a family committed to being responsible caretakers of the environment (HALL winery being the first LEED Gold Certified winery in California), a family with a deep sense of community and social conscience (Kathryn Hall, Jennifer’s mother, was Ambassador to Austria under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush and has served on or founded several socially responsible organizations), Jennifer knows the bar has been set high – very high, which suits her well; she loves and relishes the challenge to meet and exceed goals. Today, in terms of the family business, Jennifer is focused on adding a new brand and dimension to the HALL/WALT family of wines. BACA (which in Latin means berry), is a premium Zinfandel brand (released in 2018). The focus is to bring a FUN premium varietal label to a new, younger generation of wine drinkers.
50
But, to understand BACA, you need to understand the passion that created this vision for the future. Initially, Jennifer wanted to be an actress, and mentioned that not pursuing that early childhood dream was somewhat of a disappointment. However, she did appear on several episodes of Walker-Texas Ranger. As we talked, Jennifer mentioned that one very positive thing acting taught her, was how to accept rejection, and move on in a positive manner. It was during that time when her mother was appointed Ambassador to Austria that may well have been a pivotal point in Jennifer’s life. At 13, living in Austria, attending an American school, Jennifer wanted to learn German. She felt the best way to learn to speak fluently, was to totally immerse herself, and she transferred from her American school to an Austrian school, where only German was spoken. Despite the fact she was told all the classes would be in German, that she would receive no special assistance, Jennifer was determined. Not knowing a word of German, sitting in that first class must have been overwhelming. However, two years later, speaking fluent German, Jennifer graduated, with honors. As she told me, “I love challenges, and I loved school and learning.” A decade later, after receiving her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern, she went on to further challenge herself by enrolling in a joint JD/MBA program at Stanford University, completing that in four years, subsequently passing the California State Bar. Knowing she would eventually enter the Hall family wine business, as her vison of what that next chapter would look like started to take shape, Jennifer spent several years involved in community, and giving back. She mentored college students, and formed a non-profit organization, omghow/Girl Karma Inc. This non-profit social media platform focused on helping and encouraging “tweens and teens” to build selfconfidence, self-awareness and assume leadership roles. Additionally, Jennifer volunteered with Girls for a Change, Friends of the Elderly, and continues today to serve on the Northwestern Library Board of Governors.

Jennifer Brown, BACA Wines
Having grown up with parents as positive role models who were very community and humanity focused, giving back, volunteering and helping others is a cornerstone of who Jennifer Brown is. Developing a crystal clear vision of what she wanted “her place” in the Hall family of wines to be, Jennifer’s project, BACA Wines, came to fruition, and today is part of HALL and WALT Wines. Being part of a younger, forward-thinking generation, Jennifer’s goals for this brand were multi-faceted: The brand would represent, the “young at heart” consumer. It would be fun. It would be adventurous. And, it would symbolize Jennifer’s personal beginning, as an homage to her grandparents, and a return to those childhood days in the Zinfandel vineyards. The challenge of creating a meaningful part of an overall wine culture, especially in Napa Valley, was enticing. As she has in every phase of her life, Jennifer threw herself into this project completely. She wants to create her own individual legacy to stand side by side with Hall and Walt wines. Jennifer describes BACA as being “a special occasion, millennial luxury wine,” (but that doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t thoroughly enjoy it). She realizes she is fortunate to have the success and reputation of HALL Wines behind her. The initial release helped to establish BACA as a trendsetter. She and winemaker Alison Frichtl Hollister were honored to receive a Wine Enthusiast 92 rating on the initial release of BACA’s Tug of War and a 93 rating on Double Dutch. Returning to the theme of her childhood, playing in the Zinfandel vineyards, the names of BACA wines conjure up fun childhood recollections, as each wine is a play on words from games we all played as children. Ring Around the Rosé: This is an especially fun wine, as it comes in a four-pack of 12-oz. cans. Of this specific product and packaging Jennifer says: “There’s an emerging niche for well-made, small-batch canned wine. This is truly new for the industry and we’re excited to be a part of it.” Take it on a
52
picnic, on a hike, to a concert in the park…it’s fun, it’s cool and it’s GOOD! The other wines have equally fun, memory-provoking names: Cat’s Cradle, I Spy, Tug O’ War, Double Dutch and Marbles. In order to produce distinctive styles, grapes are sourced from elite vineyards stretching from Calistoga and the Russian River, to Napa and Paso Robles. Jennifer Brown has learned from her parents’ example – a code of ethics, respect, dedication, and how to dream big. She especially has learned the importance of environmental responsibility. As we chatted about sustainability, clean energy, and the future, Jennifer said quite simply: “It’s up to my generation to save the planet.” She, and so many other of this younger generation are dedicated to this goal, and lead by example in their personal and business lives. Jennifer Brown may be described in many ways: She is focused, determined, bright, funny, fun, passionate, adventurous, community oriented, loves learning and being challenged. During our discussion, she often referred to her parents. The admiration and love she has for them, as parents, role models and mentors, is evident and came through in many different ways. With all of her visions, goals, and community involvement, Jennifer has a well-focused balance in her life. At one point I asked her “is there anything else you would like to add.” Her reply, which perhaps simply sums up “who” Jennifer is, was, with the biggest grin: “I recently became a mother….and I absolutely love it.” Jennifer Brown is part of a new generation with a focus and passion, determined to make this world a better place, and helping to add new excitement to Napa Valley’s future

ALAN VIADER – SECOND GENERATION Farmer-Winemaker-Son-Father
D
elia Viader, mother of Alan Viader, describes herself in this way: “I call myself the ‘Wine Mother.’ I’m the mother of the vines; and the mother of the wines; and the mother of the winemaker.” Delia arrived from Argentina over 30 years ago, with 3 children, determination, and a vision that has created a highly respected Napa Valley cult wine. But, more importantly, this quote describes how she nurtured not only the land and the vines, but her son as well. At the age of 25, Alan assumed the mantle of winemaker and today is one of those next generation leaders, carving a path into the future of Napa Valley winemaking. Alan is soft spoken, with an innate intelligence, plus energy that seems to be constantly bubbling just below the surface, ready to spill out at any moment. He has a defined vision for the future, displaying a passion for life, wine, and family. Unsurprisingly, when you sip Viader wines, you will experience the same complexity and subtleties. They (whomever “they” are) say that wine is grown in the vineyard, but I have found that great wines also reflect the winemaker’s personality and vision as well. Alan is humble, respectful, introspective and unassuming. His formal education (spanning different continents) became laser focused on the complexity of soil, plus the need for sustainability and protecting the environment. He is a perpetual hands-on student, and says, “There is always something new, somebody pushing the status quo, and I’m happy to experiment until I find what works on our particular site.” However, his most influential teacher, unsurprisingly, was and continues to be, his mother. Alan naturally fell in love with dirt, vines, grapes and wine while growing up, working the vineyards, and learning to drive a tractor at the age of 12. He says his mother “positioned” him well … never pushing, but always encouraging him to keep going. He remembers his mother saying, as people would visit the winery: “Here I am, here are my wines, now meet my son.” Alan is aware of the responsibility to carry on the family legacy, and easily accepts the challenge, mentioning that he and his mother blend well together. Delia always
54
challenged Alan by having him take on more and more responsibility. At 21, Alan became vineyard manager, four years later, in 2006, he became head winemaker. Always eager to learn, and always encouraged by his mother to look beyond the horizon, Alan plans for the future of Viader, and Napa Valley winemaking. Sipping with Alan, he talks about the “changing of the guard” that is taking place in Napa Valley. This is a generation that is not afraid to “push the envelope” and experiment with the non-traditional, whether it be in trying different blends, the style of winemaking, or taking the leap to recognize soil types and microclimates that are better suited for planting different and more unique varietals than may have traditionally been planted in the past. However, there is one thing, above all, that Alan is focused on in his farming, winemaking and leading the way for this Next Gen: Protecting the planet, reducing the carbon footprint, organic farming, and striving toward sustainability. Alan feels passionately that new, fresh perspectives are needed, such as the Porto Protocol, “a sustainable initiative which motivates companies and individuals to do more to help than they are doing at the moment,” (refer to www.portoprotocol.com). This next generation brings new viewpoints to farming, winemaking, business, and life in general. They are a “voice for the small guy.” As dedicated, passionate and in love with the earth and vines as he is, Alan leads a well-balanced family life. He and his wife Mariela have three children: Two sons ages 10, 8 and a 4-year-old daughter. As Alan played and worked in the vineyards when he was a child, his two sons, who he describes as very outgoing, enjoy working, bottling, tasting, and following Alan around. Who knows, they may well be the third generation of Viader winemakers in another decade or so! Personally, a goal of Alan’s is to be an industry leader in the move toward sustainability and protecting the environment. He feels strongly about “doing what is right.” This theme carries through to his volunteering with the local search and rescue team, which gives him an immense amount of joy. But in the end, everything is about respect…..for family and for the planet. To

work hard: do what you love, to do what you can for the environment and future generations, and taking ample time to enjoy your family. There are many components to Alan Viader – the farmer, the explorer, the scientist, the winemaker, the community leader, and the family man that meld into the whole person – just as there are many elements that come together, maybe magically, to make a wine so expressive that its aroma and taste describe the man who oversaw its creation. Maybe one day Alan will call himself the “wine father,” father of the vines, father of the wines and father of the (next Viader) winemaker. One thing is certain: Alan Viader and his generation are leading Napa Valley and the culture of Napa Valley, on a road to the future: This is their time, and they embrace it wholeheartedly. As we spoke on that idyllic June morning, overlooking the valley, Alan mentioned something he was told long ago by one of his professors, which seems more than anything, to sum up Alan’s philosophy and vision. “Dr. Boulton at UC Davis once told me that success isn’t about doing just one thing 1000% better, but finding 1000 things and doing each of them 1% better.” On a daily basis, Alan continues to look for and uncover that “one more thing” to make 1% better. At the end of our conversation, Alan made a comment that, perhaps, describes himself, and his personal outlook on life the best. Preparing to leave on a business trip to Chicago, Alan mentioned this was to be a quick turnaround trip, because: “I have to be home on Friday in time for my daughter’s first recital.” And, when he said that, the smile on his face said it all!

LISA AND ARIANA PEJU SECOND GENERATION Calmére Estate Winery – Exploring New Directions
T
he first hint of what was to come on our visit to Calmére Estate Winery, where I was meeting Lisa and Ariana Peju, was when we got out of the car, being greeted by Katie, (the winery’s Estate Coordinator). With a huge smile on her face she shouted out, “Hi there, welcome to Calmére, I hope you’re having a wonderful day.” Well, it was a wonderful day, and it was about to get a whole lot better! Katie accompanied us to the tasting room, and within minutes Lisa Peju arrived. “Hi, I’m Lisa.” No “businesslike” handshake, just a big, friendly welcoming hug. Taking in Lisa’s smile, laughter and effusiveness, it was as if a bottle of Champagne had just been uncorked and bubbled over. We wandered down to the deck, overlooking San Pablo Bay, with San Francisco in the background, and then Ariana arrived, slightly out of breath, “apologizing” for being “late” (all of six minutes because of St. Helena traffic). There was some friendly bantering between the two sisters about this, as the first sip of wine was poured, and a 100 point afternoon began. The tale of how parents, Tony and Herta (HB) Peju met, eventually purchasing land to grow grapes and produce award-winning wines, is a separate and fascinating story. Suffice it to say, they had a dream, and through a long and arduous journey of hard work, risk and passion, moved to Napa Valley in 1983 with their two daughters, Lisa, age 6 and Ariana, age 3. Growing up in the vineyards, working the vines, driving tractors, welcoming those first guests to the “tasting room” (which in the beginning was the garage), seeing their parents hard work coupled with absolute love for what they did, became ingrained in the sisters. Lisa and Ariana were destined to join the family business. After college, in 2002, Lisa became full time with Peju. Perhaps, it was those very early days welcoming and escorting guests to taste her parent’s wine that gave her that special gift of interacting with
58
people, to become the face of Peju, representing the brand domestically and internationally. Ariana, after finishing her formal education, joined the Peju family in 2006. With a profound dedication to the environment, sustainable farming practices, and reducing the carbon footprint, she has led the way for Peju, (and Calmére) to utilize sustainable and organic farming practices. Additionally, incorporating the use of renewable energy, Ariana focuses on reducing the carbon footprint wherever possible. She oversees the day to day business operations as well. The sisters’ goal was to grow their parent’s business and, as the second generation, carry on the family legacy. Lisa and Ariana developed a natural separation of responsibilities, emphasizing their individual strengths, which makes for a perfect pairing of siblings working together towards a common goal. Much like the roots of the vine will branch out and dig deep to seek water, in addition to continuing the legacy of Tony and HB, Lisa and Ariana wanted to branch out. They had a vision of their own winery, producing quality wine that was fun and different from “the norm,” with a focus on their generation as a demographic, but appealing to the general wine drinking population. As Lisa (or maybe it was Ariana) said: “We want to do something fun and different, with a quality product.” With that goal in mind, property was researched and purchased, plans were drawn up, and finally in March 2019, Calmére Estate Winery opened their doors. As we sat sipping together, Lisa and Ariana kept a lively dialogue going … playing on each other’s words and finishing each other’s sentences. They said how this dream of theirs, now becoming reality, would continue the family legacy in “the right way.” As their parents did with Peju, they would put their own roots down, doing something different from their parents, while concentrating on making Calmére Estate Winery a destination to visit. It was Lisa who said, with kind of

a wily smile and laugh: “We’re doing something different from our parents … it’s (our) Burgundy vs (our parents) Bordeaux.” Calmére, being located in Carneros, where the soil and microclimate is conducive to Burgundy, the Peju sisters are concentrating on producing several Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, creating a brand and style of wine uniquely their own. As we visited throughout the afternoon, being mesmerized by the incomparable view, Lisa and Ariana talked more and more about the influence their parents had, and how they were role models. It was the work ethic of their parents, plus their passion and love for what they did and dreamt of, that became ingrained in the sisters. Lisa and Ariana were involved in the entirety of the business from their earliest age. They were never “pushed” to go into the family business, but always encouraged to pursue their goals, whatever they may be. Their parents’ examples made the daughters who they are today, and helped them develop a satisfying lifestyle. These two young women (a millennial and a xennial) are down to earth, and passionate about what they are building for the future. When I asked if there were any specific disappointments or future goals, Lisa said she had no regrets, as regrets are not a good thing nor productive. However, Lisa does dream of having a vineyard in another country one day. As for Ariana, she said that she is most proud of “making it this far with my sister and not killing each other.” They both laughed at that, showing the respect they have for one another, plus their friendship. They love to laugh and kid each other, which gave
60
us all a laugh when Ariana teased Lisa about her chicken coop, and said “Do you believe, all her chickens have names?!” As we finished the last glass of wine, I asked, looking forward, if they had any thoughts on what they would want their legacy to be. Ariana said she would like to do a documentary of the family, and their culture. And Lisa said: “I just want to be known as having been a good person.” Lisa and Ariana are smart, fun, funny, and following their dream of adding a “new dimension” to the Peju family story. In doing so, they are incorporating the admiration they have for their parents, while facing the challenge themselves of taking a new direction by working with Burgundian grapes, something new for them and their winemaker, Sara Fowler. While producing the best wine they can, they are totally and passionately committed to pursue this undertaking in an environmentally responsible fashion. Sipping out on the deck at Calmére, gazing out at the City by the Bay, talking with the Peju sisters, approached magic. Wine is experiential, and reflects individual personalities. The wines of Calmére Estate Winery are filled with Lisa and Ariana’s passion, fun, and humorous personalities. They are following their own vision, but learning from their parents. Lisa and Ariana Peju are part of an exciting group of “next generation” vintners and winemakers expanding the story of Napa Valley. These two sisters continue to honor their legacy “the right way,” by bringing pleasure to others, which gives them a sense of fulfillment and contentment. They have already become rolemodels for those who follow.

IN THE KNOW:
Cannabis Extracts and Vaping By Alicia Rose
Since Proposition 64 passed in California in 2016 legalizing and regulating commercial cannabis activities, cannabis concentrates (or extracts) have become the single most popular method for people looking to incorporate the therapeutic benefits of cannabis into their lives, without smoking. While people have been combusting whole flower (bud) over many centuries – making it a tried, true and trusted form of consuming cannabis – extracts offer versatility, both in highly concentrated forms for medicinal use as well as being the base ingredient in everything from edibles and tinctures to vape cartridges. Cannabis extraction is a method by which the cannabinoid and terpene-rich oil is separated from the plant material. There are many different extraction methodologies and technologies, so it’s important to understand that not all extraction methods are created equal or offer the same quality or benefit in the final product. The greatest therapeutic effect is found when the hundreds of naturally-occurring compounds are preserved in what is referred to as a ‘full spectrum’ extraction, where the entourage effect of all the compounds working together surpass the benefit of any single, isolated compound. Many full-spectrum extracts don’t require a lot of fancy or expensive equipment; some simple techniques include soaking in ethanol, applying a combination of pressure and heat for making rosin, or soaking the cannabis in ice water for making hash. Making concentrates for vape oil, however, generally requires a laboratory of manufacturing equipment that inject the cannabis, under pressure, with a solvent such as carbon dioxide (a process we support) or petrochemicals like butane (which we firmly believe should be avoided), along with a host of other solvent types. Depending on the extraction methodology, the oil can be left as a full-spectrum extraction, or it can be pulled apart into its component parts – whereby the lipids, micronutrients, terpenes and cannabinoids are each separated, and then often remixed in various “non-native” percentages based on the flavor profile or viscosity that the extractor is trying to achieve. Like most great winemakers, we believe there’s significant benefit found in

utilizing the native intelligence of the whole plant, which means the less manipulation, the better. Its very important to note that the recent vape cart scare, including the horrific health problems and fatalities caused by using these types of products, has nothing to do with extraction methods or cannabis oil on its own. Rather, these health issues are caused by illegal, black market vape carts that contain various unapproved additives including vitamin E acetate and tocopherol – both of which cause something called lipoid pneumonia to form in the lungs. These additives are only found in products made and sold in the illicit market and are not allowed in vape carts or inhaled products of any kind in the legal, regulated market under California law. Black market cannabis extracts are also likely to contain dangerously high levels of other toxic residues including pesticides and fertilizers, leading to one conclusion: you should only purchase cannabis products from licensed cannabis retailers and dispensaries. If you’re interested in going deeper, it’s interesting to note that even in the legal market, manufacturers are allowed to use food-grade additives – such as vegetable glycerin, coconut oil, propylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) – even though these ingredients haven’t been verified as safe when smoked or vaped. In fact, there’s a growing body of independent research suggesting that these additives can convert into Group 1 carcinogens when combusted, and should be avoided.
FALL/WINTER 2019
For all reasons stated, and more, we are fierce proponents of whole plant, sun and soil grown, full season, cannabis extracted without hydrocarbons, in order to maintain the full spectrum of therapeutic benefit, without any additives of any kind. Unfortunately, products of this quality, even in the regulated market, are difficult to find so it’s important to always ask the questions in order to ensure you’re getting the safest and best products for your needs – whether in flower, edible or vape cart form.

3 Michelin Stars: “Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey” When visiting world-famous Napa Valley, not only can you find spectacular beauty, heavenly hotels, and the most sought after wines, but a chance to savor one of the most elevated dining experiences in the country. And, if Napa Valley is the Hollywood of the wine world and the Michelin Guide are the Oscars of the culinary world, then these star dining destination winners are about as celebrity as it gets. To be awarded the highest rating – the coveted 3 Michelin Stars – restaurants must offer more than excellent food. They must offer emotion. According to the Michelin Star director: “Every three-star restaurant has a very unique signature and I think that what we look for in a three-star meal is an emotional experience and you should have that experience engraved in your memory for many years to come.”

Contemporary French Restaurant Wine Spectator: Grand Award Winner 1314 McKinstry Street, Napa Chef Ken Frank’s cuisine has earned a Michelin Star every year since the famous guide has been ranking restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. His menu of contemporary French cuisine is created from the region’s rich bounty of seasonal, fresh ingredients sourced from a network of dedicated local farmers and purveyors. La Toque is also one of only 100 restaurants in the world to receive Wine Spectator’s highest honor, The Grand Award, for their wine list and service excellence. The extensive wine list boasts more than 2,300 selections focusing on rare library wines of California and other great wine-producing regions. Pairing wine and food is their passion. The pairings on the menus are considered by many to be the ultimate food and wine experience. The La Toque Culinary Team and Sommeliers taste together daily, constantly exploring, looking for combinations that elevate both the food and wine, creating harmony. Guests can select from three different tasting menus nightly. The ‘Core Menu,’ where you can make your own selections from a list of savory dishes and desserts, creating your own four- or five-course experience. A preselected seven-course ‘Vegetable Tasting Menu’. And for the ultimate La Toque experience, put yourself in Chef’s hands and go with the ‘Chef’s Table Tasting Menu’, a preselected menu of nine courses. Optional Wine Pairings are offered with all of La Toque’s menus and are highly recommended. Chef Ken Frank is also considered one of the most

knowledgeable truffle chefs in the world. Chef Frank holds the distinct honor of being the first American chef invited to cook at the Fiera Internazionale Tartufo Bianco D’Alba, the world-renowned Annual White Truffle Festival in Alba, Italy. In 2016, he was made Knight of the Ordine dei Cavalieri del Tartufo e dei Vini di Alba. He has been cooking with truffles for nearly 40 years and is widely considered the top truffle chef in North America. La Toque features an ‘Annual All Black Truffle Tasting Menu’ each January. And for the past few years, they have been fortunate to enjoy a second “Winter” Truffle season with fresh Australian Black Truffles becoming available in the Summer months; with that, La Toque now also features a ‘Summer Truffle Tasting Menu’ each July.
Hidden Gems The Michelin Guide has played a significant role in helping illuminate some of the finest restaurants on the planet. Initially limited to France, the guide is now in 25 countries across four continents. Since 2007 the highly secretive Michelin “Inspectors” have been rating Bay Area restaurants, including those in the Napa Valley. Going forward, the starred restaurants from Michelin’s “San Francisco Bay Area & Wine Country” guide will be absorbed into the California guide. A total of 57 restaurants were included in the most recent volume. In case you are looking for a few hidden gems that are not yet Michelin rated … Here are four of my favorites.

Oenotri
Local cuisine, Italian, Pizza 1425 1st Street, Napa Oenotri is handcrafted Italian food, with an open airy ambience. It has more than 20 different types of house-made salumi, all made in house, as well as fresh and dry pasta. I love the Italian style thin crust perfect pizzas, exclusive olive oil sourced from within the Napa Valley, breads made daily in-house, and of course a huge variety of produce sourced from its own farm. Oh and great service – make sure to ask for Darrian!

Fabulous French bistro cuisine 540 Main Street, Napa If you want to go to a great bistro where you feel like you’re in France head to my favorite place for the best Sancerre and classic french onion soup in town. We like to sit at the bar, where you meet locals and people from all over the world. Cozy, charming,

romantic, fun … all in one, with a superb wine list where you can still taste Napa wines but also get into the fine wines of France.
The Michelin Guide According to Wikipedia: Michelin guide was originally introduced by French tire company Michelin in 1889 by brothers Andre and Euard Michelin. A smart business move for a tire company to write a guide about restaurants and encourage motorists to drive around the country with their guide and thus use up the tread on the tires a bit faster, wouldn’t you say? The guide proved useful. It had information for travelers, such as maps, instructions on how to change a tire, where to fill up petrol, and a listing of places to eat or take shelter for the night. The Michelin brothers began to realize that overtime, the guide’s restaurant section was garnering more attention and so they decided to set up a team of anonymous diners to visit and review restaurants. The guide awarded its first stars in 1926, with the three-star system going into effect in 1931. Today, the Michelin Guide rates more than 30,000 establishments across three continents. According to the Michelin Guide, the “inspectors” job is to assess a restaurant’s food based on five objective criteria: the quality of the ingredients used, mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, the personality of the chef in his cuisine, value for money and consistency of quality between visits. To remain anonymous, they pay for their meals like any other customer would, and when it comes to awarding Michelin stars, they are not allowed to be influenced by anything other than the food. Interior decor, table setting or service quality are indicated by a fork and spoon symbol — a restaurant can be given one to five, from “Quite Comfortable” to “Luxury in the Traditional Style.” Today there are five levels of Michelin ratings: • Three stars (“exceptional cuisine worth a special journey”). • Two stars (“excellent food worth a detour”) • One star (“high-quality cooking worth a stop”) • Bib Gourmand (an image of the Michelin Man licking his lips and signifying “friendly establishments that serve good food at moderate prices”) • L’assiette (the plate symbol representing “simply serves good food”)
Zuzu
Spanish tapas & an eclectic wine list. 829 Main Street, Napa So this is one of my favorites! A real tapas restaurant that ransports you to a small town in Spain where the ambience is casual, cool and intimate and the Spanish wines are crazy good! The bar is the place to be. Since it opened it has become a favorite among locals who just want to take a break from the big fancy restaurant meals. The food is fresh and delicious. Don’t leave without ordering the flat iron steak, asparagus, and shaved artichoke portebello salad. All delectable!
Miminashi
Japanese Izakaya/Robatayaki cuisine 821 Coombs Street, Napa Hip and happening eatery for contemporary izakayastyle Japanese cuisine and housemade ice cream. Now a favorite among locals, we discovered this little jewel by its crazy wooden door pattern and yummy icecream you can order from the street window. Now it is our favorite place on a night when we want a fun vibe, can dress low-key and just sit at the really cool horseshoe shaped bar and chat. Plus you always get a yummy surprise appetizer to start. Really there is nothing like it in Napa. I call it our Japanese tapas bar. And the skewers! The savory sensational skewers, the sashimi, the expertly paired sake, the addictive edamame, everything rivals the real deal in Japan. Plus a great wine list and you never walk away feeling like you over ate – but feel just right.
