Mortgage Relief and COVID-19 Scams: What You Need to Know

U

nfortunately, during times of hardship, families are often targeted by fraud artists attempting to take advantage of those needing assistance. The COVID-19 crisis is no exception, with many scammers pretending to extend a critical lifeline to struggling homeowners through socalled “foreclosure rescue fraud.” According to Freddie Mac, this scheme involves bad actors offering false promises of being able to save your home from foreclosure. Common elements of this fraud include the following: • Requiring you to sign over the title to your home. • Asking you to sign unfamiliar documents and/or share your personal information. • Charging you rent to stay in your home and/or potentially promising that you can purchase your home back when your financial situation improves. Another common fraud involves a third party guaranteeing you a loan modification with a reduced mortgage payment. Such scams may operate similarly as foreclosure rescue fraud, as fraudsters collect an upfront fee and promise to work with your loan servicer on your behalf. So what can you do to protect yourself?

• During World War II, Coca-Cola wanted soldiers to have a taste of home and opened bottling plants near Europe. However, the soda was synonymous with the States, making it problematic for nonAmericans to be seen drinking it, especially in the Soviet Union

• Don’t disclose. Never provide your information via phone or internet until after you have verified the caller or company’s identity. • Be suspicious. If someone has contacted you asking for personal or sensitive information, do your homework to verify the validity of the request before providing any information. Contact your servicer (the company listed on your mortgage statement) and confirm that they called you asking for information. • Spot imposters. Scammers across the globe can make any name or number appear on your caller ID or email. Protect yourself from spoofing by letting calls go to voicemail first. If a call is important, the caller will leave a message. If you do answer and it is a robocall, don’t press any numbers. Just hang up. • Report fraud. Freddie Mac will never reach out to offer a refinancing opportunity or new loan over the phone. Dear Paw’s Corner I just moved to a new part of the country, where natural disasters are more frequent. When checking out available emergency services, I found out that there is no emergency shelter nearby that allows pets. What can I do? -- Charlie B., via email Dear Charlie Knowing ahead of time what emergency services are available in a disaster is an excellent move. You won’t have as many unpleasant surprises during the high stress of a natural disaster. But it is a bummer that the local disaster shelter doesn’t accept pets. free on Amazon, if that’s where you’re going to order books. In the search box on Amazon, type in Kindle app. The biggest difference between reading on a tablet and reading on a Kindle is this: The Kindle has one purpose, which is reading. The screen doesn’t have a glare (unlike the shiny glass on a tablet), and you can easily increase the size of the type font. If you want to download free books from your library, either onto a Kindle or a tablet, you can likely get help if you need it. Many libraries are technically closed now (the public can’t go in), but staff are still there, some of them specifically to offer technical help. Call to ask for the specific e-reader app they use. ter with your pet. Develop a contingency plan for evacuating to this shelter, if possible. Another option is to identify pet-friendly hotels within an hour or two of your home; if you need to leave for more than a day, these may be an option. Next, find out if there are designated shelters just for pets during or after a natural disaster. You wouldn’t be able to stay with your pets, but they would be safe. Third, get engaged with the local government and animal shelter. Talk to your new veterinarian, too. Find out if there’s a local emergency management office and call them. Are any plans in place for taking care of pets in a disaster? If not, ask for steps to be taken to include this contingency. During California’s wildfires in 2018, there were very few facilities just for animals, and no shelters allowed them. The need was so great that empty strip malls were repurposed to care for pets and abandoned animals. Urge local government to create a plan now, before a disaster, so all pets in the area will have a safe place to stay. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Bake Crunchy Dog Treats

M

uch to the disappointment of my snackstarved son, who had just bounded into the house, the note on the kitchen counter by the metal cooling rack read: “Dog Biscuits! Sorry, not for you. -- Mom.” The tempting treats may have looked and smelled like peanut-butter cookies, but they were hard as a rock, ready for our canine friends to enjoy. Bake a batch of these crunchy dog biscuits with your kids for doggie gifts. This simple recipe goes together in minutes, and young kids will have an easy and satisfying time rolling out or patting down the pliable dough to create shapes with cute cookie cutters.

CRUNCHY DOG BISCUITS • 2 cups whole-wheat flour • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup peanut butter at room temperature • 1 cup whole milk • All-purpose flour for rolling the dough

1. Set oven temperature to 375 F 2. Let one child measure and combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. 3. Another child may measure and stir the peanut butter and milk together in a smaller mixing bowl. It will take a minute or two until the mixture is smooth. Slowly pour it into the dry ingredients and stir until well-combined. 4. Sprinkle flour on the counter. Knead the dough a few times until it is easy to roll out into a 1/4-inch rectangle with a lightly floured rolling pin. Cut with cookie cutters in fun shapes such as a fire hydrant, bone, kitty, heart or X’s and O’s, and transfer to greased (or parchment-paper-covered) cookie sheets. 5. Bake 20 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned. Let cool. TIP: Divide into gift bags, tie with ribbon and a tag, and deliver to neighborhood dog friends. One way to combat cabin fever Coronavirus can also cause cabin fever. And, it is prompting some extreme ways to combat the boredom and inactivity of lockdowns. Take Louise of Warrington, England. She works a night shift at a local hotel and, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens, she wasn’t going to let the isolation get to her. So she ran a “personal” marathon, not through the streets

of the city but through the silent hallways of the hotel. She came to work early that evening and ran the race before reporting for work. It took her 4 hours and 37 minutes to jog the 26.2 miles required for an official marathon. popular soap “Melrose Place,” but she’s probably better known for her regular roles on the sitcom “The Jamie Foxx Show” and the police drama “NYPD Blue.” She also has a role in the upcoming Eddie Murphy film “Coming to America 2.” She’s had quite a successful acting career! Q: What happened to Lisa Vanderpump, and why isn’t she on the new season of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”? Also, who is the woman who replaced her named Garcelle? My sister said she was she a supermodel in the ‘80s. -- B.W. A: Lisa Vanderpump, who was an original castmember of the “RHoBH,” didn’t show up for the on-camera reunion hosted by Andy Cohen at the end of last season, reaffirming that she was done with the show after nine years. The tipping point seems to have been “puppygate,” which started when fellow castmember Dorit Kemsley adopted a dog from Lisa’s rescue organization. After the pup nipped at one of her kids, she rehomed it with a friend, who reportedly brought the dog to a shelter. This really upset Lisa, and she accused Dorit of being the one to abandon the dog. The rest of the cast then accused Lisa of selling the “puppygate” story to “Radar,” which Lisa denied. After quitting the show, Lisa told “Extra” TV news: “I just had a horrible time with the show and the women. It was a very sad time in my life, and it wasn’t made any better. I decided just to walk away.” As for her replacement, Garcelle Beauvais did start out as a model but quickly transitioned to acting. I first remember seeing her in “Models Inc.,” a spinoff of the

Q: Will the historical drama “Victoria” be returning to PBS this year? -– J.M. A: So far there have been three seasons, consisting of seven to eight episodes each, of the critically acclaimed Masterpiece series “Victoria.” However, with the pandemic shutting down production in Hollywood and overseas, any news of a fourth season is simply up in the air. The best way to receive the most up-to-date information is through a free online newsletter, which you can sign up for at: www. pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/. If a fourth season is on the horizon, you’ll surely read about it there. Q: Whatever happened to the CBS newscaster Giselle something? I think she was a reporter on “60 Minutes” and was a big deal about 20 years ago, but then she just disappeared. -- R.R. A: You’re probably thinking of Giselle Fernandez, who rose through the ranks at CBS News, but not “60 Minutes,” and then went over to NBC. She even interviewed Fidel Castro. Then in the mid-to-late 1990s she transitioned into entertainment news, co-hosting the syndicated “Access Hollywood,” and then later worked for a local news affiliate in Los Angeles. Now, at 58 years old, Fernandez anchors “Your Morning on Spectrum News 1” in Southern California, as well as the weekly news program “LA Stories.” (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tap Your Inner Chef With DIY Recipes

I

t used to be that going to the grocery store was a routine and mundane task. Now with the COVID-19 pandemic, we all must think differently about going out to buy food and adjust the way that we prepare favorite family recipes based upon what is available. This is where doit-yourself dinner recipes come in handy. A DIY dinner recipe is about finding a way to retain the flavors of the recipes you love while using the ingredients that you have on hand. If you have always wanted to free yourself from the restraints of a recipe, now is the time to do it! Think of the current lack of ingredients as permission to tap into your inner chef. To ease into creating your own DIY dinner recipes, start with making a pot of chowder. Chowders were introduced to North America by immigrants from France and England more than 250 years ago. Native Americans called the dish “chawder,” which was interpreted as “chowder” by early settlers and fishermen in New England. The original versions of the dish consisted of a pot filled with a mixture of fresh fish, salt pork, leftover hardened biscuits (which were used as a thickener), onions, water and whatever spices were available. A chowder is a delicious way to use the ingredients you have on hand to create a meal that does not require extensive prep or simmering for hours. My recipe for Seafood and Sweet Corn Chowder uses the basic techniques for making a chowder, but is designed to accommodate the need to vary ingredients based upon what you have on hand or what you can purchase at the store.

SEAFOOD AND SWEET CORN CHOWDER If you don’t have all the vegetables, seafood or spices on hand, omit or substitute the ingredient with what you do have. This chowder will still be delicious without it! • 3 tablespoons butter or vegetable oil • 1/2 cup (about l large stalk) chopped celery

• 1/2 medium onion, chopped • 1/2 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced or 1/2 tablespoon granulated garlic powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 3/4 teaspoon dried dill or tarragon, or 1 tablespoon dill pickle juice • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes • 2 cups chicken broth, seafood stock, clam juice, bouillon fish base or water • 1 to 2 large Russet potatoes, or 3 red skin or Yukon Gold potatoes cut into 2-inch cubes, about 2 to 3 cups • 2 large carrots, chopped • 2 cups frozen corn, thawed, or • 1 (15-ounce) can whole kernel or cream-style corn, or 6 ears sweet corn, husk and silk removed, or frozen corn on the cob, thawed with kernels cut from the cobb • 2 cups heavy cream, half and half, whole milk or 2 (14-ounce) cans evaporated milk • 1 3/4 to 2 cups fully cooked, skinless salmon chunks, or 1 can (14 3/4 ounces) salmon, drained, flaked, bones and skin removed, or 1 to 2 cups fresh or frozen peeled and deveined shrimp, cooked peeled and deveined shrimp, or cooked crab meat (checked for pieces of shell) or a combination of the seafood equaling 1 3/4 to 2 cups. 1. Place the butter or oil into a large saucepan or Dutch oven placed over medium heat. Add in the celery, onion, green bell pepper, garlic or garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and pepper, dill, tarragon or dill pickle juice, and the cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Saute, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are tender, about 4 to 5 minutes. 2. Stir in the broth, stock, juice or water, potatoes, carrots and the remaining teaspoon of the salt and pepper. Cover and bring the chowder to a boil. 3. Reduce heat to low; stir the mixture, cover and simmer for 40 minutes or until the vegetables are nearly tender. Stir in the corn, cream or milk, and the salmon, shrimp or cooked crab meat (or a combination of seafood). Simmer on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes or until heated through. 4. Garnish with lemon wedges, chopped parsley or green onions. Serve with toasted French bread or crackers. Serves 6. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc., and Angela Shelf Medearis

ventured into town today to check on the rumor: the town was dead, the streets empty, not a soul in sight. It was mostly true. Very few cars were parked along the main drag, and those were in front of restaurants open for sidewalk takeout service only. I did spot a knot of people in front of the coffee shop, which was my true destination. A half

dozen of the early-morning regulars (all elderly veterans) were fanned out on the sidewalk, leaning on canes or sitting in folding chairs. I parked the car and approached the walkup service window. As I did, one of the vets whipped out a folding wooden tape measure and aimed it at me as he opened it to the full length. “Six feet,” he said. “Eight, if you count my arm.” I nodded and steered a wide circuit around him. At the service window the clerk shoved a small credit card reader through the window. “No cash,” she said. I fumbled my one credit card into the machine, and she slid my coffee out the window, slamming it firmly afterward. I hung around at the edge of the group, pretending to study the menu in the coffee shop window.

Eventually they started talking again, and as usual, I listened. What I heard, in the middle of this dead town, gave me hope: One veteran was looking forward to his grandson taking him out on the water. Another looked forward to the birth of another great-grandchild. A third one was calculating the possible success of hijacking the grocery store delivery truck and making off with the toilet paper. I even heard some laughter. It was then that I knew we’ll be OK. A constant reminder: Wash your hands with antibacterial soap, and scrub for a full minute.
