P

eabody and Emmy Awardwinning journalist, Hank Plante, will serve as the 2019 celebrity tree lighter for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 1 at the Tram’s Mountain Station kicking-off with a holiday performance by the Palm Springs High School Madrigals & String Quartet along with a special appearance by Santa. Then Plante will light the Tram’s landmark 45-foot tree comprised of over 4,000 LED lights, which can seen throughout the Coachella Valley. Plante is the recipient of six Emmys and has covered California for three decades on TV stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He is the winner of the George Foster Peabody Award and was named “Reporter of the Year” by the Associated Press. He is now a resident of Palm Springs and serves on the Desert Sun Editorial Board, as well as providing commentary for NBC Palm Springs.

As one of the first openly-gay TV reporters in the United States, Plante has been honored by numerous LGBT rights organizations. In addition, he was featured in the documentary “5B” which was selected for the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and chronicles the first AIDS ward opened in the nation, which he covered as a reporter. “For me the holidays are a time when we rise above our differences (which can be glaring if you work in the news business like I do), and we’re lifted up to who we really are: brothers and sisters getting through life together,” according to Plante. “Driving around the Valley, looking up at the holiday lights coming from the top of the Tram, I’m instantly reminded of that all through the Season.” The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the world’s largest rotating tram car. Opened in 1963, the Tram’s 80-passenger cars travel along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon from the Valley Station (elevation 2,643 ft.) to the Mountain Station (elevation 8,516 ft.) in approximately 10 minutes. For more information, call 888-515-TRAM or 760-325-1391, or visit us at pstramway.com. Download the free mobile tour now available in the Apple Store/Google Play.

It’s Like Herding Cats

One cool cat at a shelter in Houston, TX is giving caretakers there a run for their money, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. Quilty, a seven-year-old feline, has developed a knack for

Dear Paw’s Corner Last year at Thanksgiving dinner, my dog “Aker” nipped at one of my sisterin-law’s children as they played in the living room. They had opened the door to my room and let Aker out without my knowledge, and when she got caught between a couple of roughhousing kids and hurt, she reacted the way any dog would. Now my sister-in-law is refusing to bring her family to dinner this year unless I get rid of Aker. What would you do? -- Janice, Lansing, Michigan Dear Janice I’d enjoy a quiet dinner with no kids around to torture my dog. Getting rid of Aker is an abso-

lute no-go. If you still want your sister-in-law and her kids to come to dinner, then let her know that you have ground rules about interacting with Aker. The children are not to let Aker out of your room, where you have put her so she won’t be stressed out by all the activity and strange people in the house. Further, it is your sister-in-law’s responsibility to make sure her kids behave. If they can’t behave, then they shouldn’t be allowed over. The holidays are a stressful time for pets: Parties, dinners and visits from strangers all contribute to heightened anxiety. Add lots of rich, tempting food on the countertop -- some of which can make pets very sick, like chocolate desserts, guacamole or grapes -– and a home can be downright dangerous. Aker shouldn’t suffer or be abandoned just to make one family member happy. I’m very serious about this. If this family tiff can’t be resolved in a way that protects your dog from being hassled, then inform the in-laws that they will need to make other plans. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

opening the doors to the freeroaming common rooms, giving Quilty and his cat-mates access to the lobby. That, in turn, keeps the staff at the Friends For Life Animal Rescue and Adoption Organization busy rounding them up. Herding cats, as we know, can be a truly difficult task so the shelter is now using broom sticks to prevent future escapes. Metallic Postcard Postcards are among the most popular inexpensive collectibles today, perhaps because they are easy to find. But they require time and searching to create a special collection. Postcards are wanted for the postmark, the stamp, the message or the picture on the front, and they can be framed and hung or displayed in scrapbooks. Although an English postcard was mailed as early as 1840, the first U.S. postcard wasn’t printed until 1873. The earliest picture postcards mailed in the U.S. probably were cards sold at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. A printed stamp was used on early postal cards by the U.S. Post Office. A rectangular stamp was glued onto a souvenir postage card, bought and mailed by tourists. The required postage changed 21 times between 1872 and 2000, going from 1 cent to 21 cents. Today it is 35 cents. Collectors also can date a card from its design. The “divided back” era began in 1907. “Linen” cards that had texturized paper for better color printing were popular

from 1931 to 1959. “Chrome” era postcards featuring Kodachrome photographs started in 1939. The craze for collecting postcards began in 1946, and there were clubs, stores, sales and research for collectors buying postcards. This unusual card, featuring the side of an attached metal turkey, seems great for a Thanksgiving message, but the raised turkey would not allow it to go in the mail. It’s part of a group of cards that have strange attached or moving parts known as “mechanicals.” It also has a divided back, suggesting a date as early as 1907. The postcard has an old price tag of $20. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A: According to the U.K.’s Daily Mirror, “Competitors must wear their same clothes for as long as it takes to film an episode for the sake of continuity.” They also can’t wear stripes because they make the cameras strobe. The bakers even have to be interviewed by a psychologist to make sure they can “cope with being filmed for up to 16 hours a day.” Even more impressive is that the contestants must prove they truly are amateur (albeit it highly talented) bakers. “They’re barred from having any professional catering qualifications within the last 10 years, having worked as a chef, or earned money from commercial baking.” If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this show, it’s available

A: “The Batman” is slated for a June 2021 release, but there’s already been a lot of buzz about it, with many people asking if we even need another Batman movie. Others think Robert Pattinson (“Twilight”) seems too young for the role of Bruce Wayne, but he’s 33 now and has proven himself as an actor. As for his co-stars, Zoe Kravitz (“Big Little Lies”) has been cast as Catwoman. Jonah Hill was in talks to play one of the villains, but negotiations fell apart. Instead, Paul Dano (Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora”) has now been cast as The Riddler. The latest rumor is that Colin Farrell (“Dumbo”) will play The Penguin. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Good Boys” (R) -- An invite to his first party that might involve kissing sends Max (Jacob Trembley) and his best friends Thor (Brady Noon) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams) into a panicked quest for background info on anything carnal. The trio of tender tweens hijacks Max’s dad’s drone to spy on the teen girl next door, and when the drone is captured, it sets the kids off on a daylong adventure to replace it. It’s a movie about completely misinformed kids spouting near-knowledge of sex, so I expected crude and base jokes, rude sight gags and plenty of awkwardness. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was delighted. “Angry Birds 2” (PG) -- What’s better than animated birds and pigs going at it, flinging rocks and themselves in an attempt to destroy each other’s islands? There are some jokes built in for the adults as well, so grab a bowl of popcorn and snuggle up with the kiddos. “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” (PG-13) -- Eschewing traditional diving tours for the offbeat, four teen girls (Corinne Foxx, Sistine Stallone, Sophie Nelisse and Brianne Tju) explore the underwater ruins of a Mayan temple, unaware that it has turned into a shark-infested playground. That would be terrible enough, but the structure itself is a labyrinth through which the girls must navigate if they want to make it out alive. Taylor Swift, who has won 295 major music awards, including 10 Grammys, is putting in a serious bid to win an Oscar. While visiting “Cats” creator Andrew Lloyd Webber, he played her a new melody he’d written for the film “Cats.” Before the afternoon was over, Swift and Lloyd Webber had written “Beautiful Ghosts” for “Cats.” The song is sung first by Francesca Hayward, then is reprised by Dame Judy Dench and finally sung over the closing credits by Swift. It’s the only original song written for the film and will qualify as a best-song nominee for Taylor and Lord Andrew. Swift admits she studied for her big role as Bombalurina by going to cat school, where they watched film of cats walking, and by studying her own three cats, Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button. Daughter Got Measles Despite Vaccination Dear Dr. Roach My daughter is 4 years old and has, in the past five days, developed measles. She was vaccinated at 9 months and has been treated with antibiotics, Tylenol and vitamin A supplements. What concerns me is that she is now experiencing seizures, even without a fever. They are not grand mal seizures, but simple ones. They have me worried. What can I do? -- G.A. Answer Measles remains a serious disease in many parts of the world, with 90,000 deaths reported in 2016. Even in industrialized nations, there have been outbreaks involving tens of thousands of people infected. Vitamin A supplementation may be of value in those who are deficient, and Tylenol can help keep the fever down, reducing the risk of febrile seizures. The antiviral drug ribavirin sometimes is used, though without clear evidence of effectiveness. Otherwise,

All aboard the streaming train! (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc. there are no effective antibiotics or other treatments for measles. When seizures occur in a child with measles in absence of fever, it can indicate a complication called encephalitis -- inflammation of the brain. Children also may experience nausea and vomiting, and they usually have a headache. Confusion and sleepiness are other common symptoms. The diagnosis can be confirmed by an evaluation of the fluid around the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, which is sampled via a needle inserted into the lower back. Confirmed encephalitis with measles is treated with steroids. This reduces the risk of permanent brain damage from the infection. Even so, 25% of children may be left with some impairment, including epilepsy. Unfortunately, vaccination at 9 months is not adequate protection. Children’s immune systems may not be able to fully respond to the vaccine so early. Children are recommended to have the measles vaccine at 12-15 months and again at 4 to 6 years in the United States. In countries where risk of measles mortality remains high, children are vaccinated at 9 months, then again at 15-18 months. During an outbreak, a dose may be given as early as 6 months old, in addition to the other two doses. (c) 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
