Palm Springs International ShortFest announces official selection
P
alm Springs International ShortFest has selected 332 short films in their Official Selection that will be eligible for jury award consideration. These films represent 69 countries and were selected from more than 6,000 submissions received this year. As previously announced, while ShortFest will not hold an in-person event, a number of the official selection films will be available to screen for free online from June 16-22. A list of screening films and the complete line-up is available at www.psfilmfest.org. “We are thrilled to be able to mount ShortFest virtually during these challenging times,” says ShortFest Directors of Programming Linton Melita and Sudeep Sharma. “Although it is a shame we cannot welcome audiences in person later this month, it is no small consolation to have the privilege to share the work of these incredible filmmakers in what we feel might be the best lineup the festival has ever had.” Juried award winners will be announced on Sunday, June 21 from the official selection presenting them with awards and cash prizes worth $25,000 including five Academy Award qualifying awards. Over the course of 24 years, the Festival has presented over 100 films that have gone on to receive Academy Award nominations. This year’s categories, which will have their own group of jury members, include:

Many of us haven’t been eating right lately. Sometimes the stores are out of what we want; sometimes we can’t get an available pickup time. But there are a few other safe options for getting what we need. Community Supported Agriculture: Farmers near you like to know in advance if their crops will have a market once it’s time to harvest, and they sell “subscriptions” that allow you, as a shareholder, to pick up fresh food once a week. Do an internet search for “community supported agriculture” in your area. Look for ones that sell more than just vegetables. Some also have eggs, butter, bread, jams, flowers and meat. Farm Stands: You’ll see these along the road -- a small farmer or gardener who sells his produce at the end of the driveway out of a

Dear Paw’s Corner This weekend while hiking with my daughter on a public trail, a big dog ran straight up to us and started barking fiercely. We were frightened and didn’t know what to do, so we stood still until the dog ran off. What should we have done instead? — Paul in Lynn, Massachusetts Dear Paul You and your daughter did the right thing by standing still when the dog approached. small stand. Stop and take a look, and ask questions. Most of them will have a limited variety, but it will all be fresh, probably picked just that morning. You might have to point to the items you want so they don’t have people touching the food. That’s a safety point you’ll appreciate. Ask about other foods that will be available, and make it a point to stop by. Farmers Markets: These could be a dozen or more farmers who congregate in specified town locations on certain days, each with a stall or table. They will likely have a specialty, with carrots and plants here, and honey and potatoes there. Many will have homemade goods such as breads and jams, and some will have meat in coolers. Chances are you’ll be asked to use a credit, EFT or EBT card to keep from handling cash. Some vendors will have their items prewrapped so they’re untouched. And remember, no matter where you go, look for marks on the ground for places to stand six feet apart. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
can help you interpret whether the dog is relaxed, alert or feeling threatened (go to preventivevet.com and search for “off-leash dog”). Here are additional steps to take when approached: 1. Stay calm and observe the dog’s body language and behavior as it approaches. 2. Place your walking stick in front of you, between you and the dog. 3. If it comes close, put out a hand and say “Go home!” or “Sit!” 4. Startle a dog that doesn’t leave: Bang your stick against the ground (don’t wave or swing it) and yell “Go home!” Another recommendation is to carry dog treats on walks. If a loose dog approaches and won’t leave, toss a treat away from you (but in their line of sight) and when they go to eat it, calmly depart the area. Some owners will take issue with the idea of strangers tossing treats at their dog. But letting their dogs run off leash and out of view is risky to the dog and to other people, and just plain irresponsible. Ideally, dogs should be trained to stay within sight of their owners and well socialized to other humans; otherwise, they need to be on a leash. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

2020 Census Car Caravan Weekend
T
he U.S. Census Bureau invites you to participate in the 2020 Census Car Caravan Weekend, June 19 through June 21. A car caravan is a parade of cars that drives through a strategically selected route. Each car in the caravan displays census messaging to raise awareness of the 2020 Census, while keeping social distancing per the CDC and your city/county guidelines. Our goal is to increase census participation in communities across the country. Participants can choose the location and select a caravan rout that includes communities with low 2020 Census self-response rates for maximum impact. You can track the response rates in your community at 2020census. gov/en/response-rates.html. Things to consider: It may be helpful to consider the following as you plan your caravan event. Identify a primary point of contact to provide communication and logistical support for the event. Map out a clear route, take
into consideration the number of confirmed participants (cars), stoplights, etc. Secure relevant city approval, including the police department (escort or nonescort.) Plan a local social media campaigne to promote your car canvassing event. Share the fun! Take pictures and video to share your Census Car Caravan event and hometown pride with your community. You can access examples of successful 2020 Census Car Caravans at ksbw.com/article/city-of-watsonville-encourages-residents-to-participate-in-2020-census/32384450# • Ever wonder how long your peanut butter will last? Q: Can you tell me about the adorable German shepherd dog on the TV show “SEAL Team”? Was he a stray, or was he bred to be a police dog in real life? — A.K. A: “Dita the Hair Missile” is the name of the dog who plays “Cerberus,” the heroic canine on the hit CBS action drama “SEAL Team.” She’s actually a Belgian Malinois, a breed that resembles German shepherds, and her trainer/handler is Justin Melnick, who plays SEAL Brock on the show. According to TVInsider.com, Dita “follows the visual cue of a laser to hit her mark and uses drug-sniffing techniques to find ‘explosives’ (marked by a synthetic narcotic on a cotton ball).” Melnick adds, “No matter how scary, if there’s explosions or gunfire, she knows I’m with her.” The final two episodes of season three were not able to be filmed due to the pandemic, but “SEAL Team” has been renewed for a fourth season. You can expect to see Dita and the show’s human star, David Boreanaz (Jason Hayes), on your screens sometime this fall. Q: My husband and I watch a lot of “judge” shows weekdays on TV. Why does Judge Judy wear a white lace collar with her robe? I like the look, reminds me of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. — J.K. A: “Judge Judy” premiered in 1996 and has been an unparalleled success in its genre. There are other TV judges (now including Jerry Springer as “Judge Jerry”), but no one seems to match Judy Sheindlin in terms of her wit and no-nonsense approach.

In 2015, Sheindlin told “Entertainment Tonight” that she started wearing the lace collar because “it’s disarming.” She explained: “People walk into a courtroom and think ‘Look at that sweet, lovely judge that I was lucky to get. She wears a lace collar; how bad could she be?” Judge Judy, now 77, will be hanging up her robes for good next year. Q: I read your column every week in my local Florida newspaper. How do I go about writing to the BBC to tell them how great I think a particular series is, etc.? Would you happen to have an address, either “snail mail” or email? — J.C. A: The best place to learn all about what the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has to offer in terms of programming here in America is through its main webpage www.bbcamerica.com. It states: “If you live in the U.S. and subscribe to a cable or satellite provider, you probably already have BBC America. It’s a combination of original American scripted series and the best in British entertainment ... drama, sci-fi, natural history ... and movies.” I think it’s important to give feedback directly to television networks, whether positive or negative, because how else are they going to learn what viewers want? Morning Stiffness Is Sign of Osteoarthritis Dear Dr. Roach I’m a 67-year-old black female who’s been diagnosed with “a little arthritis” in my right hip. Now retired from a desk job, I unfortunately still am not getting enough exercise. My issue is that after sitting for a length of time, I’m in excruciating pain and can’t stand up at all. Once I straighten up and get moving, the pain subsides. I’ve been told “you’re getting old,” but I’m not old! I’m about 30 pounds overweight. Also, when I stand for any length of time, my lower back aches. Would taking a morning walk and a yoga class alleviate this problem? I’m so embarrassed when I get out of my car or get up from the dinner table. — S.H.

Answer There are many types of arthritis, and the answer to your question varies a bit depending on type. I think you probably have the most common form, osteoarthritis, so I’m going to answer you assuming that’s the case. Stiffness in the morning, quickly relieved by exercise, is a hallmark of osteoarthritis. It’s common, treatable and not something to be embarrassed about. Exercise is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis. It can be difficult to get started, but the more people exercise, the more they are able to do. Walking and yoga both are excellent ideas, but the best exercise is the one you will want to keep doing. Osteoarthritis affects a fair number of 67-year-olds, but it’s important to remember that it’s not your age that is causing the pain: It’s the arthritis. Although we know of no treatments that can reverse the course of osteoarthritis, medications (including a few supplements), exercise and physical therapy all can ease symptoms and improve function. Losing weight takes stress off the joints and is recommended, but is not easy. Finally, severe arthritis can be treated surgically, with a joint replacement. That’s not a procedure to take lightly or have done too early. (c) 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved
Creamy Veggie Tortellini This recipe features a delicious cream sauce packed with spices that complement the tortellini and fresh or frozen vegetables. If you don’t have half and half on hand, you can substitute 1/2 cup canned evaporated milk or regular milk. Just be sure to stir in 4 1/2 teaspoons of butter after all the other ingredients have been incorporated to add richness to the sauce that the half and half would have provided. • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic minced • 2 tablespoons Italian or poultry seasoning • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cloves • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or dash of hot sauce • 2 (14 ounce) cans fire-roasted diced tomatoes with juice • 1/2 cup half-and-half • 3 cups baby spinach, chopped; or Swiss chard, stems removed and chopped; or 1 (10 ounce) package of frozen spinach, thawed and drained • 1 (10 ounce) package tortellini, fresh or frozen • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan or Romano cheese, optional 1. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil, then add the onion and saute for 2 minutes. Add the garlic, Italian or poultry seasoning, salt, pepper, nutmeg or cloves and cayenne pepper or hot sauce, and cook about 1 minute. 2. Add the tomatoes and halfand-half, stir and bring mixture to a simmer, about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Add the fresh spinach or Swiss chard in handfuls, stirring until it wilts down before adding more. If using frozen and thawed spinach or greens, add to the sauce and stir to combine. 4. Stir in the tortellini. Cover and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, gently stirring once or twice, until the tortellini are tender, plump and cooked through. Sprinkle with cheese, if desired. Serves 4.
Fruit Salad with Spiced Syrup This syrup-and-spice blend adds a punch of flavor to a fruit salad whether you’re using fresh or frozen fruits or a combination of both. • 3/4 cup water • 1/2 cup honey, agave nectar or sugar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 strip fresh lemon peel • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 6 cups fresh fruit (a mixture of sliced nectarines, plums, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and/or frozen fruit, thawed) 1. Using a small saucepan, combine the water, honey, agave or sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon peel. Heat to boiling over mediumhigh heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 3 to 5 minutes to slightly thicken, stirring occasionally. 2. Remove saucepan from heat; stir in lemon juice. Cool syrup to room temperature. 3. In a large bowl, combine fruits and syrup. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. Stir before serving. Serves 6. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc., and Angela Shelf Medearis
A dog’s tale Spot, the sheep herding mechanical dog, is making a name for himself for his skill and, well, his doggedness, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. This is no shaggy dog story. Spot is for real, the brainchild of Massachusetts-based, Boston Dynamics, and the New Zealand-based software company, Rocos. They got together to show off the practical capabilities of robotics. And, they succeeded in proving that robots can, indeed, easily handle complex responsibilities in a demonstration herding sheep on a New Zealand
sheep farm. Someone once said that herding sheep is like herding cats-- a daunting task, at best. But sheepdogs are born and bred to do the job with the help of handlers. It’s a task that requires fast-thinking. And, that’s the edge that Spot has-- a brain with a chip-based, lightning speed thought process. This dog does have its flaws, however. It’s not likely you’d want to give him a pet for a job well-done. Association of Mature American Citizens provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

An App Just for COVID Ah, here we go. I recently wrote here about a few Department of Veterans Affairs apps that might be helpful in reducing stress. Now we hear from the VA that it’s created a specific mobile app to reduce stress caused by the coronavirus. This one, COVID Coach, focuses on four areas: manage stress, learn, mood check and find resources. Each category has subgroups. Manage Stress, for examples, has challenges, tools and a favorites

area. Under Challenges, there are categories such as creating space for myself, handling anger and irritability, and sleep struggles. Mood Check covers setting a goal, and tracking well-being, anxiety mood and PTSD symptoms. Under Learn, there’s staying safe, staying healthy, staying balanced and more. Finding Resources has some valuable options -- crisis support, substance use support, meeting your needs, for parents and caregivers -- with direct links right inside the app. Staying Strong has a photo of a flower growing out of what looks like cracked, dry dirt. No, I’m not a gardener, but I get it. It’s where we are right now with this whole lockdown coronavirus thing. We need to come out the other side of this safe, sane and healthy. This

app can help. It was created by the VA’s mental health people and requires iOS 11.0 or later for Apple products or 4.4 for Android. There’s nothing in the app that requires a password or credit card info, so there’s no data mining. You can get this free app from the Apple app store and Google play. Click on the icons at mobile. va.gov/app/covid-coach and it will take you to those two sources. If you have questions, contact them at MobileMentalHealth@ va.gov. And yes, anyone, not just veterans, can make use of the app. Get the app, fill out the self-reporting questionnaires (legit ones from the VA and DoD) and check in with the app every day.
