hen one utters the name “Ralphie,” images of family Christmas frequently pop to mind. For many of us, the holiday wouldn’t be the same without waking up Christmas morning and tuning in to the classic tale of “A Christmas Story,” which captures the love and laughs of the season. Now, the 1983 movie is brought to the stage, from the songwriting team behind the smash hit Tony Award-winning musical “Dear Evan Hansen” and the Academy Award-winning film “La La Land.” The original 1983 Christmas comedy film starred Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin and Peter Billingsley. Since 1997, a marathon of the film has aired annually on both Christmas Eve and Christmas
Day. It is often ranked as one of the best Christmas films. The film earned two Canadian Genie Awards in 1984, and in 2012 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”. Set in 1940’s Indiana, a nine-year old, bespectacled Ralphie Parker schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Ralphie’s desire is thwarted by his mother, his teacher Miss Shields and even a Santa Claus at Higbee’s department store, all giving him the same warning: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” Christmas morning arrives and Ralphie dives into his presents. After
it appears all of the presents have been opened, Ralphie’s father, “The Old Man,” directs Ralphie to look at one last present that he had hidden. Ralphie opens it to reveal a very special surprise. An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. The musical was nominated for three 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and the story is narrated by the adult Ralphie. Ralphie’s grown up reminiscences bring him – and us – to the realization that Christmas is about the presence more than the presents!

elissa Etheridge is one of rock music’s great female icons. The popularity of this singer-songwriter, guitarist and activist has been built around such memorable songs as “Bring Me Some Water” and “No Souvenirs.” In 1993, Etheridge won her first Grammy award for her single “Ain’t It Heavy” from her third album, “Never Enough.” Tracks from her mainstream breakthrough album, “Yes I Am,” namely “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” both reached the top 30 in the U.S., and the latter earned Etheridge her second Grammy. In 2011, Etheridge received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
At the 2005 Grammy Awards, Etheridge made a return to the stage after being treated for breast cancer, and, while bald from chemotherapy, performed a tribute to Janis Joplin with the song, “Piece of My Heart.” Etheridge is known for her mixture of confessional lyrics, popbased folk-rock and raspy, smoky vocals. She has also been a gay and lesbian activist since her public coming out in 1993. This powerhouse live performance will be all you need for your own health and well-being – and a fair amount of happiness, too. Photo courtesy of McCallum Theatre

oliday season in the desert is a bit non-traditional, but fortunately the Palm Springs Tram can whisk us away to the magical land of Christmas, enveloped by chilly weather and majestic pines at the Mountain Station. This year, the annual holiday tree lighting will be led by Peabody and Emmy awardwinning journalist Hank Plante. The festive ceremony will also include a special appearance by Santa Claus. The Palm Springs High School Madrigals will be performing during the ceremony and then again at 7 p.m. on the Pines Café stage. Both Pines Café and the bar will be open that evening.
The excitement continues throughout the month, with performances from chamber singers from Cathedral City High (December 6), Martin Luther King High (December 7), Encore High School for the Arts Madrigals (December 8) and Jurupa Valley High (December 13). On December 14, Santa will visit from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on December 15 there will be a breakfast with Santa. Between December 23 - January 3, tram cars will start going up early, at 8 a.m. each morning. With this kind of Christmas fun, we’ll take non-traditional any day. hen the chilly winter winds start whipping through the trees in the Midwest and along the east coast, the palms are still gently swaying here in the Coachella Valley, kissed by a light breeze and surrounded by mildly temperate climes. Combine this scenic background with the spectacular and varied art on display for the Desert Art Festival, and it’s hard to complain. Presented by West Coast Artists, this weekend of culture comes along just in time for holiday shopping. The event showcases 100 artists presenting original work, including paintings in acrylic, oils and watercolors, photography, etchings, sculpture in clay, glass, metal, stone and wood, fine crafts, blown glass, turned wood, semi-precious jewelry, pottery, stained glass and high-quality crafts. Contemporary artisans present unique styles of individually handcrafted functional and decorative pottery, raku, vessels and gourd art. Guests are invited to stroll between artists’

booths to view the works while interacting directly with the artists. Many pieces are one of a kind, and all works are available for purchase. The event draws collectors of all levels who are welcome to browse and buy at this exceptional exhibition of visual and sensory art, encompassing contemporary, traditional, modern and southwest art styles. The experience is akin to a visit to a town square or central marketplace in a faraway land, with dozens of unique galleries, each with a different style or specialty, located in one convenient destination. Even more appealing is the Festival’s proximity to the Palm Springs boutiques, eateries, hotels and the numerous galleries and studios in the Uptown Design District. The Festival’s founder, Ronda Mills, has produced many of the finest art festivals throughout southern California, Arizona and Nevada for over 35 years. while emphasizing quality in the arts. Creations cover the spectrum for every taste and budget, and proceeds benefit a local artsrelated, non-profit organization. For anyone who is a student of art or looking to decorate home or office, this is the ultimate go-to for the discriminating individual or the corporate collector. Parking and admission are free. Desert Art Festival is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 29, 30 and December 1. Event is free. Frances Stevens Park is located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. o-owner and chef Danny Riccio knows how much customers appreciate the passion that goes into years of operating one of the most popular restaurants in the Coachella Valley. This family-owned gem, Riccio’s Steak and Seafood, shines brightly in downtown Palm Springs, featuring scenic patio dining as well as a cozy experience in the intimate and relaxed dining room. The original Riccio’s opened over 40 years ago in its previous location in uptown Palm Springs, and today the restaurant continues to set the standard for all the others, serving up steaks, seafood, veal, chicken, lamb, pasta and more. Diners might want to start with a signature martini, like Lemoncello tini, Boston Crème Pie, Bellini
or Bronx Tale ($12). Of note: each these tasty “tinis” is presented with a chilled “sidecar,” translating into two full cocktails. Riccio’s offers a complete beer list, full bar with whiskey, bourbon, cognac and premium tequilas and an extensive wine list. Wines are expertly curated and reasonably priced, by the glass ($8) or by the bottle, featuring William Hill or Far Niente chardonnay, Maso Canali or Jermann pinot grigio, Silverado or Jordan cabernet sauvignon, as well as a variety of merlot, pinot noir, ports and dessert wines. Guests can embark on the culinary part of their adventure by sampling mussels and clams, escargot, crab cake or herb dusted calamari ($11-$15). Dinner menu selections include Spanish paella with seafood and sausage ($29), a rustic
cioppino ($31), cannelloni ($20), filet mignon ($36), salads of seared salmon ($16) or classic Caesar ($9) or “Chicken Riccio” stuffed with eggplant and fontina cheese in a porcini mushroom sauce ($26). The veal chop ($49) and Maine lobster tail (market price) are fresh daily. All breads and pastries are made in-house along with flan and crème brûlées. Specialty desserts include Cassata and Tiramisú cakes. Aside from the warm Tuscan décor and the even warmer hospitality, the exceptional cuisine – delicious yet unpretentious – will redefine your notion of what real cooking really is – and was always meant to be.

he neighborhood favorite has reopened for fall with an updated vibe and a brand-new menu. Chef Eric Stenberg has joined the team, bringing 20 years of finedining experience. Diners count on him to use the freshest ingredients from local farms. Open for lunch, dinner and happy hour, the Landmark menu is all about flavor. Shared plates include shrimp cocktail ($12) and antipasto platter ($14), and salads include Landmark Caesar and arugula with gulf shrimp ($11). Hungry customers should also try one of the flatbreads, such as vegetarian or BBQ grilled chicken ($12 each).
Sandwiches feature turkey panini, tarragon chicken salad and grilled portobello ($11). Grilled specialties ramp things up with slow roasted ribs ($14), slider trio ($13), citrus marinated grilled shrimp skewer ($14) and several others. he heart and soul of Mexico is represented here, with fresh, quality ingredients and artistic blends of flavor, aroma and color. Starters like beer tempura avocado bites ($12), crab cakes and deep-fried calamari ($14 each) set the tone. “Streetwise” and “Elevated Moments” menus feature tastes like verdi or rojas enchiladas ($10), chipotle marinated shrimp fajitas or carne asada ($29) and marinated salmon ($32). A side order of black beans, arroz verde or corn salad ($4$6) rounds out the meal. For dessert, try arroz con leche ($10) or guava cheese empanada ($12).
Some of the most exciting parts of the menu here are the cocktails, with smooth pours like refrescada, Jalisco mule, bloody Maria, rufino Tamayo, watermelon margarita and a flight of four tasting size margaritas ($12-$21). The beers, chavela, kombucha, tequila and wine menus are also muy bueno. Owners Liz and Mark believe that “nothing brings people together like a great meal in a memorable setting.” They already proved their mettle with their restaurant Farm, also in downtown Palm Springs. We readily accept the invitation to travel south of the border right here in our backyard, no passport required.

ittle Deuce Coup, Pink Cadillac…it almost sounds like a throwback musical concert. But, no, we’re talking about the 67th Annual McCormick’s Classic Car Auction, which will feature dozens of vintage cars up for auction, including roadsters, muscle cars, convertibles, European classics, antiques, trucks and motorcycles. Rare entries are expected to include a 1964 Ford Thunderbird, a 1966 Shelby Cobra CSX4236 and a 1949 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible. Past auctions have seen fleets of rare models cross the auction block, vehicles like a 1936 Packard 1407 La Baron All Weather Cabriolet, of which only 622 were produced; a 1954 Mercury Monterey Sun Val-
ley Two Door Hardtop; an expertly restored 1956 Corvette Roadster; a 1932 Pierce Arrow Coupe with a rumble seat; a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a powerful 428 Cobra Jet engine; luxury models like Ferraris and Porsches; and many other sleek beauties that are almost too stunning to drive. Each of the three days, between 175-225 cars will be showcased. On day one, there’s a champagne happy hour at 11 a.m., and on Sunday, attendees can look forward to free mimosas and bloody Marys in the main tent before the auction begins at 10 a.m. The auction will also stream live online for all three days with proxy bidding for those who register in advance. At previous
auctions, enthusiasts tuned in from across the United States, Europe and New Zealand to bid on cars. Video cameras will be set up to show different views of each car as it passes through the auction tent. Bidders can register on the website and must follow the same procedures as people attending the auction in person. Keith McCormick, the proprietor and the vision behind McCormick’s Classic Car Auctions for 33 years, holds this popular event twice a year, giving attendees the chance to “wander the rows of these timeless pieces of history in search of that rare find.” Whether you bid or browse, this celebration of wellpreserved wheels makes for a memorable weekend.

ara Evans has notched five No. 1 singles, sold millions of albums and won the most prestigious awards in country music. This talented singer-songwriter has released eight albums, such as her best seller, “Born to Fly” in 2000. Several singles have crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, where she has seven Top 40 entries. Evans has won one award each from Billboard, the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Association, Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) and a Dove Award. This brown-eyed girl has charted more than 20 hit singles. Her sound
combines country and pop, and she’s been known to collaborate with artists like Vince Gill and Martina McBride and even cross musical categories with singers like Rod Stewart and Gavin DeGraw. She’s the voice behind hit singles like “Some Things Never Change,” “A Little Bit Stronger,” “My Heart Can’t Tell You No,” “Slow Me Down” and, of course, “Born to Fly.” Audiences may remember her from “Dancing with the Stars” in 2006, but it’s her delivery of these top tunes which carry the day for this superlative songstress. f you’re thinking it sounds highly entertaining…you’re absolutely right! Leslie Jordan is one of the most consistently recognizable faces in popular entertainment. His journey towards stardom has provided one of the quirkier and more impressive career trajectories of the past few decades. Jordan invites audiences behindthe-scenes of his childhood and career with a hilarious look-back at his life experience as a flamboyant youth raised as a Southern Baptist. He shares “unbelievable real-life stories” and treasured anecdotes from his renowned stage and television performances.
Jordan won an Emmy Award in 2006 for “Will & Grace,” and he’s enjoyed rave reviews for his original stage plays, “My Trip Down the Pink Carpet,” “Stories I Can’t Tell Mama” and “Fruit Fly.” He was a valued supporting presence in one of Hollywood’s most message-minded films of the last decade, “The Help,” in 2012. Guests will be rapt by Jordan’s compelling stories about his arrival in Hollywood in 1982, his stint as a jockey and his fears and worries about remaining relevant in a culture obsessed with beauty and youth. Through it all, his ultimate message reminds viewers to keep moving onward, upward and forward.

Y
our nightlife experience, and possibly your outlook on life, are about to become a lot more cosmopolitan. High atop Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, there’s a luxurious, newly renovated space featuring mid-century modern decor, an expansive balcony, sweeping views of the Coachella Valley and surrounding mountains and one of the most highly acclaimed musical duos performing live every weekend. Fans throughout the valley are thrilled to learn that singer-musician team Mark Gregg and Misty Howell will be performing live on Friday and Saturday evenings as part of the “12 Acoustic and Unplugged” music series from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. There’s no cover, and, as music lovers know, Mark and Misty deliver
one powerhouse set after another, covering genres like rock, pop, a few country tunes and even some original compositions. Both artists perform all their music live with no pre-recorded tracks. Mark Gregg is a respected figure on the local music scene. He says, “Our music often focuses on the theme of intimacy and its struggles and rewards. The show is a very personal experience as told through music - something everyone can identify with.” The lounge offers an extensive menu of top shelf spirits. Exclusive cocktails feature superior choices like lemon drop, verde margarita, mango mojito and others ($15 each). Craft beers are cold and frothy, with options like Goose Island IPA, Hangar
24 Orange Wheat, Guinness Extra Stout and several more ($7 each). If you’d prefer to sip and swirl, there’s an extensive menu of fine wines by the glass, like Candoni Pinot Grigio, Coppola’s Director’s Cut Cabernet Sauvignon and more, including blends and biodynamic (aka organic) selections. For the hungries, the selection of artisan cheeses is a perfect complement ($16). Or, guests can go to one of the Resort’s restaurants like Pom, Joy Asian Cuisine, Fresh Grill Buffet, Pizza Kitchen or Lique to savor their signature sundaes and late-night sandwiches or salads. The entire experience at twelve: Cocktails Above is pure quality – as a matter of fact, you may not want to come back down.

This witty 2000 Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores the complexities of marriage and friendship, focusing on the foibles of married couples that come with age and the changes that redefine and impact relationships. According to Artistic Director Ron Celona, “Donald Margulies is truly masterful at using humor and pathos to depict the complexities of spousal relationships, and I am confident that ‘Dinner with Friends’ will stimulate many significant discussions between couples after seeing it.”

The Tony-nominated Broadway hit comedy “Hand to God” by Robert Askins, has a threeweekend run at Dezart Performs in Palm Springs November 8-17. Directed by Artistic Director Michael Shaw,
“Murder on the Orient Express,” one of the Agatha Christie’s classic whodunits, is set to run November 8-24 at Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC), produced by Desert Theatreworks on their main stage.
NOVEMBER 2019
CURTAIN TIME The lush and plush Orient Express train quickly becomes the scene of a brutal murder, and, of course, everyone on board is a suspect. Having read many AC novels and directed “Death on the Nile” and “The Mousetrap,” and loving puzzles, I find it hard to outthink the Queen of Mystery. Why? Mainly it’s because she usually has a trick, which I will not divulge – so go along with Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and see for yourself. It’s on the short list of outstanding stage crime. Curtain Time: Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express,” Friday and Saturday, November 8-9 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, November 10 at 2 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, November 14-16 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m. ThursdaySaturday, November 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 24 at 2 p.m., Desert Theatreworks, Indio Performing Arts Center, 45175 Fargo Street, Indio. Tickets: $25, $30, $32. For more information, call 760 980-1455 or visit dtworks.org.
An Evening with Renée Elise Goldsberry Raul Esparza, scheduled to perform at the Annenberg Theater’s Opening Night Gala on November 16, has unfortunately canceled his appearance. The Annenberg Theater is delighted to announce that Tony awardwinning actress, singer and songwriter Renee Elise Goldsberry has been signed to replace Mr. Esparza. Renee Goldsberry originated the role of Angelica Schuyler in the Broadway musical Hamilton, for which she won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award and a Grammy Award. Her other Broadway credits include Nettie Harris in the original Broadway cast of “The Color Purple,” Mimi Marquez in “Rent,” and Nala in “The Lion King.” She has portrayed many roles on television, including Geneva Pine on “The Good Wife,” and Evangeline Williamson on “One Life to Live,” for which she received two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nominations. She is currently starring in the Netflix series “Altered Carbon.” Tickets previously purchased to the Raul Esparza performance will be honored.
