I

t’s time to set your mind on island time. Welcome to Margaritaville, where people come to get away from it all and stay to find something they never expected. With a book by two veterans of television - Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia (“My Name is Earl,” “Raising Hope”) and Emmy Award nominee Mike O’Malley (“Survivors Remorse,” “Shameless”) – this fanciful musical comedy features both original songs and our most-loved Jimmy Buffett classics, including “Fins,” “Volcano,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk,” “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” “Come Monday,” and, of course, “Margaritaville.”

The story is set in the Caribbean and involves a singer-bartender who falls for a career-driven tourist. In this show Tully, a guitar-playing troubadour and bartender, is working at the Margaritaville Hotel. Every week cruise ships bring Tully a fresh crop of romantic prospects and (just as importantly) whisks them away a few days later, much to the relief of the commitment-phobe. But when Rachel, a workaholic environmentalist, is dragged to the resort for her friend Tammy’s bachelorette party, Tully is more than smitten. But just as Rachel begins to thaw, there is a volcano eruption. The plot is not heavy, a move that was purely strategic by the writers in collaboration with Buffet him-

self. The team brought this tale to life and to the stage with the intent of making audiences feel great and reassuring them that it’s perfectly acceptable to get away from it all, if even for a couple of hours. Fittingly, the show had its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in California in the spring of 2017, where it broke house records before going on a pre-Broadway tour in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. “USA Today” has called it, “A little slice of paradise!” and “Entertainment Weekly” declared, “It will knock your flip-flops off!” Buffet says, “It’s more than just listening to a song, it’s a lifestyle.” Just be sure to always remember, “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.”

T

hese four dads from Utah became an internet sensation by way of their immensely successful series of strikingly original self-made music videos. This American musical group consists of pianist Jon Schmidt, cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, videographer Paul Anderson and music producer Al van der Beek. In 2010 they began posting piano and cello compositions on YouTube, combining classical, contemporary and rock and roll music, accompanied by professional-quality videos. As of August, 2018 the group had surpassed 1.6 billion views on their YouTube channel and had 6.2 million subscribers. They’ve topped the

Billboard Classical Albums chart six times and the New Age Albums chart eight times. Their hit video is an innovative multi-handed version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” Much of their popularity among younger fans is based on their mashups of classical and contemporary songs, such as blending Bach and Bruno Mars in “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets,” Vivaldi’s “Winter,” and “Let It Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” and “When Stars and Salt Collide” from Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars.” Their endearing personalities and will to inspire keep fans coming back for more.

ame Joan Henrietta Collins, born in March 1933, is an English actress, author and columnist. She made her stage debut at the age of nine, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London and entered British films in 1951. She then went under contract to 20th Century Fox in 1955 and appeared in such films as “Land of the Pharoahs,” “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing,” “Rally Round the Flag, Boys” with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward and “The Virgin Queen” with Bette Davis. In 1980 she landed the role of

Alexis Carrington in “Dynasty,” which made her an international superstar and brought her a Golden Globe award for best actress in 1982. In 2015 she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to charity. Collins will discuss her amazing life and career and share some fascinating backstage stories from her many years in Hollywood. The presentation is part of the Palm Springs Speaks series produced by the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Friends of the Palm Springs Library, benefitting both organizations equally.

A

cademy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning writer and actress Renée Taylor – known to millions for her role on “The Nanny” as Fran Fine’s foodobsessed mother - looks back on a life full of memorable roles in Hollywood and on Broadway and just as many fad diets. A self-described “diet junkie,” Taylor dishes out juicy anecdotes about -- and weight loss tips from -- Hollywood legends such as Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando and Cary Grant (she used to think that if she ate like a star, she’d just might live like one).

Taylor was born in The Bronx, New York City, and graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts. She worked as a comedian in the early 1960s in New York. Taylor and her husband, Joseph Bologna, co-wrote the Broadway hit comedy “Lovers and Other Strangers” and received Oscar nominations for the 1970 film adaptation. In 1971, they co-wrote and starred in the film “Made for Each Other.” By sharing her highs and lows, on and off the scale, as only she could, Taylor proves how the ability to laugh will get us through it all.

he slate board will soon clap together to roll scene on the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, set for January 2-13, 2020. The event will be presented by American Express, sponsored by AT&T and “Entertainment Tonight” and hosted by Mary Hart. Now one of the largest, most highly regarded film festivals in North America, the festival has grown by leaps and bounds since its launch by then-Palm Springs Mayor Sonny Bono in 1989. The Festival features over 200 films from 60 countries, and its audience tops 135,000 people. Attendees include thousands of locals, however 70 percent of participants are from outside the Coachella Valley, many from Canada and Europe. The Film Awards Gala on January 2 is a star-studded party held at the Palm Springs Convention Center with dozens of Hollywood stars making a grand entrance.

T

he name and title sponsor have changed again: welcome to The American Express, formerly the Desert Classic, CareerBuilder Challenge, Bob Hope Desert Classic and the Humana Challenge, among others. This year is the 61st edition of the Tournament, and global company Lagardère Sports will again operate the event. It’s still an amazing showcase of the best in golf, food, drink, amenities and top-drawer concert entertainment. It’s also one of the only PGA Tour events that features Pro-Am play along with tournament play for the first 54 holes. Past champions include World Golf Hall-of-Famers Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Johnny Miller and John Rahm. Phil Mickelson, the 44-time PGA Tour winner and World Golf

Hall of Famer, will serve as tournament host, competing against 155 of the best golfers in the world including defending 2019 champion Adam Long. Played at the famed Stadium Course at PGA West, the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West and the La Quinta Country Club, there are extensive food and drink options including Jackalope Ranch, Kaiser Grille Palm Springs, The Chop House at Jackalope Ranch, Tito’s and Grey Goose Vodka, William Hill and Rodney Strong Vineyards and dozens of others. Venues include the Albertsons Vons Pavilions Club 18 for lunch and viewing, Casamigos Club 17 located on the par-3 17th hole on the PGA West Stadium Course known as “Alcatraz,” Michelob Ultra Beers

fore Birdies with views of the 16th green and 17th tee and the Military Outpost presented by United Rentals at the closing hole, offering complimentary refreshments for all military and first responders. Of course, the big news that will knock your argyle socks off is the line-up of mega-stars set to play in two separate concerts. This year, rock-and-roll legend Stevie Nicks will perform on Friday night (ticket includes concert), and country music star Luke Bryan will rock the crowd on Saturday evening (ticket includes concert). No matter what the title, the Tournament is one of the strongest on the PGA Tour and one of the most fun and exciting for fans from every tee box of life.

O

ften considered the number one Fleetwood Mac tribute group in the world, Tusk covers all of the great hits of Mick Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Authentic in sound and sensibility, Tusk leaves no stone unturned in replicating the music of one of the world’s best-loved bands. The group’s name is taken from Fleetwood Mac’s hit song and album, “Tusk,” released in 1979, which was the 12th studio album by the British-American rock band (and which featured the USC Trojan Marching Band). Fans can expect to

hear classic Fleetwood Mac songs at this riveting stage show, including “Go Your Own Way,” “Gypsy,” “I Don’t Want to Know,” “Little Lies,” “Rhiannon,” “The Chain,” “You Make Loving Fun” and so many others hits. The selection of the name “Tusk” for this talented tribute band is significant, as the album represented a new era of creativity for Fleetwood Mac, thrusting them into the mainstream of rock and roll. The members of Tusk revive decades of fond memories of the original band, allowing rockers old and young to joyfully relive moments frozen in time.

est Coast rap legend Snoop Dogg is held in high esteem and affection by hip-hop fans worldwide, and he’s one of the most recognizable faces and voices of the genre, even to those who don’t normally listen to his music. He has the distinction for having received the most Grammy nominations of any musical artist (17 to date) without having won one. He started performing rap in sixth grade, and following some prison time after high school, he set about turning his life around through music. He became the key rapper on Dr.

Dre’s hugely successful first solo album, “The Chronic,” in 1992. After decades of a successful music career, Snoop Dogg has also branched into acting and appeared in several films. His 13th studio album, “Bush,” arrived in May 2015 and shot to No. 1 on the hip-hop/ R&B charts and debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200. In July 2016, Dogg followed up with his 14th studio album, “Coolaid,” and in May 2017, he dropped his 15th studio album, “Neva Left.” He also released a gospel album titled “Bible of Love” in March 2018.

icture it now: as you stroll the promenade, you find yourself in a charming village surrounded by quaint stores, charming eateries, snow-capped mountains, warm afternoon sun and an entire square block of artists’ booths with some of the finest works to be found. pottery, stained glass and an array of high-quality crafts. Contemporary artisans present unique styles of individually handcrafted functional and decorative pottery, raku, vessels and gourd art. Guests are invited to saunter between artists’ booths to view the works while interacting directly with the artists. Many pieces are one of a kind, and all works are available for purchase. T

he live jazz scene presented here on Wednesday nights will transport you back to the retro jazz joints of Singapore and San Francisco’s Chinatown when jazz was king. Barry Martin (aka DJ Baz), Luxsy Palm Springs and 107.3 Mod FM have put together a compelling show featuring world-class musicians performing straight-ahead jazz as well as be-bop, swing, vintage and Latin jazz. The Maria Schafer Quartet is set for January 8. Regarded as a voice from the 40s with finger-snapping swing, this downbeat darling is just the right tonic for jaded jazz ears. On January 15, audiences will be treated to The Dave Damiani Quartet. Damiani is a singer, songwriter and producer, and he and his band will be

debuting brand new arrangements. Week three on January 22 will present Douyé - Bossa Nova Deluxe accompanied by an All-Star Quartet. Earlier this year Douyé released an album titled “Quatro (Bossa Nova Deluxe)” offering Brazilian and African jazz interpretations of 1950s and ‘60s bossa nova and samba music. The Lalo Gurrero Tribute Octet will finish out the month on January 29. The jazz sounds even better while enjoying the Wang’s Jazzville menu. You might want start with a featured cocktail like Sidecar, vesper martini, lemongrass basil mojito, blood orange paloma, flavored lemon drops (blueberry, peach, and more) or several others ($11-$14 each). Starters include steamed dim sum platter, jalapeno calamari,

seared sesame ahi, coconut shrimp and others ($10-$38). Entrees are delicious, with pad Thai, chicken lettuce wraps, walnut shrimp and more ($11-$30). Desserts finish off the night with banana wontons or crispy cheesecake roll ($10 each). DJ Baz will be spinning jazz before and after the live show and between sets. Food and drinks are served throughout the show, and guests are asked to arrive early to help minimize activity during the show. Shows often sell out, and seating selections can be made in advance through the online seating chart. This chance to hear world-class musicians in a pan-Asian supper club right here in the desert will have you scattin’ and shaggin’ to your heart’s content.

T

here are so many places and situations where Murphy’s Law comes into play, and no more public than live theatre, which is the basis of the brilliant “Noises Off” and “The Play That Goes Wrong,” the latter being presented January 21-22 at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert. The premise: What would happen if Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python had an illegitimate Broadway baby? You’d get this play, which won awards in London and on Broadway. The New York Times called it “a gutbuster,” and Huffington Post proclaimed it “The funniest play Broadway has ever seen” and is “tons of fun for the whole family.” The Daily Beast called it a “classic murder mystery… chock-full of mishaps and madcap mania delivering a riotous explosion of comedy.”

PCT’s ‘Camelot’

‘60s ‘Beehive’ at DTW

The Arthurian legend of Camelot became the basis of the one of the most popular evergreen musicals of all time, with music and lyrics by Lerner and Loewe. It was adapted from the T.H. White novel “The Once and Future King.” And now, Palm Canyon Theatre is presenting their production of it January 17-February 9, starring Se Layne as Guinevere, Paul Grant as Arthur, Nikki Hock as Morgan LeFay and Noah Arce as Mordred. Derik Shopinski directs, J.W. Layne handles the fight choreography and also creates the sets and lighting design. Steven Smith is musical director.

Desert TheatreWorks’ “Beehive: The Musical,” running January 10-26, is a nostalgic look at the 1960s, originally created and directed by Larry Gallagher. It opened in 1985 in a small 150-seat theater, but soon became boffo box office, adding a few more weeks. It soon opened at the 325-seat Top of the Gate in NYC in an expanded $175,000 version. The show flows from solo powerhouses like Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin to glamorous girl groups such as The Supremes and The Shirelles. “Beehive” pays tribute to a time on the charts when women artists were all the rage.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Let’s Hike

Places to stretch your legs Amboy Crater Formed of ash and cinders, the 250-foot-high Amboy Crater rises from one of the youngest volcanic fields in the United States. A hiking trail winds to the rim with rest stations along the way. If you make it to the top, you’ll see the breach where lava poured out over 24 square miles, creating a landscape of dried lava lakes, collapsed lava tubes and sinks, spatter cones and massive flows of basalt. This can be a dangerous area. Don’t venture out in the heat, bring a gallon of water per person per day, hike with a partner and always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Crater Road eight miles off National Trails Highway. blm.gov/visit/amboy-crater Bear Creek Oasis Trail 8 miles in and out, with an elevation rise of 1,989 feet. Considered strenuous. From the Cove Oasis trailhead at the top of La Quinta Cove, follow Bear Creek Canyon to where the trail leaves the sandy wash. Follow the signs. Hikers on this trail enjoy the beautiful palm oasis at the end.

Bump and Grind Trail 3 mile loop with an elevation rise of 523 feet. This trail is probably the most popular trail in the desert and frequented by exercisers who start behind Desert Crossings shopping center in Palm Desert. Clara Burgess Trail 4.4 miles round trip with an elevation of 1,339 feet. The trail is the only route to the summit of Murray Hill, a prominent conical peak just south of Palm Springs. It is best seen when heading south on Gene Autry Trail and, although it is only a couple miles to the peak, it is strenuous with a steep incline. Eisenhower Peak Loop 6 mile loop with an elevation gain of 700 feet. This trail is considered moderate and is part of the Living Desert preserve (admission fee required) in Palm Desert. The trail begins at the Eastern edge of the Living Desert and takes hikers toward Eisenhower Peak. The trail is a good representation of desert terrain and makes a perfect beginning to a Living Desert tour. Giant Rock The largest freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert, Giant Rock covers 5,800 square feet of ground and stands seven stories high off the ground at its highest point. Native Americans once considered it sacred, and in the 1930s German immigrant Frank Critzer

dug a space under the rock to live in. One of Critzer’s friends later said he was contacted by aliens there. Today, the rock is a popular tourist destination and a photo opportunity for visitors from across the globe. Past Belfield Boulevard in Landers Joshua Tree National Park Characterized by its huge rock formations and immense Joshua tree forest, the national park lies where the Mojave Desert meets the low Colorado Desert. Hike through the trails that weave through the Hidden Valley, travel to Keys View and look out over the Coachella Valley or bring your rock climbing equipment and scale some of the most interesting geological formations in the California desert. nps.gov/jotr Lake Cahuilla Just six miles from Old Town La Quinta, the 710-acre park at the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains offers a great outdoor family day with hiking, coupled with a host of recreational selections ranging from shore fishing to horseback riding. Museum Trail 2 miles round trip with an elevation change of around 1,000 feet. This hike is quite strenuous because of the rapid incline. The trailhead is just behind the museum off Palm Canyon Drive in Downtown Palm Springs. Turn around at the picnic tables.

Visitors can enjoy fantastic views of the Joshua Tree National Park while hiking, camping or exploring the town. Only a 45 minute drive from Palm Springs to a unique environment and community.
