rt is a bond that unites humanity, and the Desert X exhibition showcases our shared history and dreams for the future. Desert X is a free, biennial art exhibit comprising site-specific installations representing various sculptural and structural displays that integrate with the surrounding desert landscapes, often in unexpected places such as the wide-open desert, next to parks and even on the sides of buildings. Highlights from the first two installments held in 2017 and 2019 included dazzling mirror displays, larger-than-life optical illusions, augmented reality installations, experiential sculptures and vibrant wall murals. Desert X has become one of the largest reoccurring events in the region, welcoming art lovers

and culture connoisseurs. The nine-week project brings attention to the valley’s environment through the display of works by emerging artists with themes like climate change, immigration, tourism, gambling and Native American culture. Curated by artistic director Neville Wakefield and co-curator César García-Alvarez, the exhibition explores the realities of people who reside here and the political, social and cultural contexts that shape their stories. A robust series of public and educational programs will accompany the artists’ projects and help broaden the exhibition’s reach to regional, international and national audiences. A Desert X 2021 film, produced by Desert X and presenting sponsor Richard Mille, will premiere globally across multiple platforms. Desert X
always consults with site owners and environmental organizations to ensure that each installation leaves no trace after closing. This year’s artists include Zahrah Alghamdi, Ghada Amer, Felipe Baeza, Judy Chicago, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Nicholas Galanin, Alicja Kwade, Oscar Murillo, Christopher Myers, Eduardo Sarabia, Xaviera Simmons, Kim Stringfellow and Vivian Suter. A listing of individual installations and their locations may be found on the website as of March 11. With almost two dozen works displayed throughout greater Palm Springs for Desert X, from Desert Hot Springs in the west to the Salton Sea in the east, many visitors make a trip out of it, exploring restaurants and other events while learning something along the way.

his outdoor experience, originally founded in 2013, is an amalgam of a flea market, a garage sale and a thrift store, offering treasures for all ages and interests. Just in time for spring shopping, visitors will find art, furniture, clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, dishware, collectibles, heirlooms, records, flowers, live plants and so much more. With Palm Springs being identified as the home of Mid Century Modern, the Palm Springs Vintage market has become a haven for retro home décor, valuable antiques and high-quality recycled items.
Sellers reserve spaces to display items, and shoppers can enjoy strolling from one booth to the next against the mountain backdrop and under the rays of the winter sun. (Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, hats and sunscreen). Guests are invited to bring their dogs on leashes. Parking is free, and classic cars and vintage travel trailers are also often on display. Masks are required at all times, and due to COVID-19, seller space is limited to one space during this time. Before or after shopping, head into downtown Palm Springs for brunch or lunch in their outdoor seating areas.

he name of Cabot Yerxa is regarded fondly not only in Desert Hot Springs, the city he co-founded, but also throughout the Coachella Valley for the educational aspects of his travels and the fascinating museum which sits at the site of his Hopi-inspired pueblo created from reclaimed and found materials in 1941. The five acres of Museum grounds have reopened two days a week. The pueblo can be viewed from the outside, showcasing its unique engineering and design. Much of the pueblo is made from adobe-style and sun-dried bricks which Yerxa
made himself in the courtyard. Filled with Native American art and artifacts, souvenirs of Cabot’s travels from around the world and displays on Native American rights, the Pueblo Museum officially opened to the public in 1950. Visitors will also be able to see the wells which Yerxa dug near his home after discovering hot mineral water. Six hundred yards away he dug another well and discovered the pure cold water of the Mission Springs Aquifer, leading him to name the location “Miracle Hill.” Today the site continues to enlighten and astound visitors.
