G

oing virtual means that what was once confined geographically is now opened up for the world to embrace. This year, Modernism Week has redefined its programs which will be offered through the entire month of February, allowing attendees to cover more midcentury modern ground than ever before. More than 25 newly created programs will be featured, available for on-demand streaming and viewing. There will also be an online auction featuring unique specialty items. Video programs include guided tours and presentations similar to events that would usually be available during in-person Modernism Week. Feature tours cover Signature Home Tour Video Series, Episodes 1 and 2, which will profile five significant residences in Palm Springs

neighborhoods. Episode 2 highlights five new houses, including The Morse Residence (by Hal Levitt, 1961), The Cahuilla Hills House by O’Donnell + Escalante (by Lance O’Donnell, 2009), The Southridge Glass House (by William Cody, 1963), Trina Turk’s Ship of the Desert (by Erle Webster and Adrian Wilson, 1936), and Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s Villa Grigio (by James McNaughton, 1963). Episode 1 is an encore performance showing five different houses from October. There’s also an architectural driving tour of Palm Springs conducted from a 1966 convertible Mustang, incorporating the talents of one of the top tour guides from the Premier Double-Decker Architectural Tour bus. Viewers can also enjoy films such as “The Desert Modernists Video Series with Alan Hess,” “The 1931

Aluminaire House Comes to Palm Springs,” “Neutra - Survival Through Design,” “Moshe Safdie and Frank Lloyd Wright at Crystal Bridges Museum” and many others. Talks will include “Charles Phoenix Retro Disneyland,” “Mod with a Twist,” “Broken Glass – Edith Farnsworth and Mies van der Rohe” and numerous others. The Modernism Show & Sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center will be offered April 8-11, 2021 with tickets currently on sale at modernismweek.com in conjunction with an in-person Modernism Week celebration April 8-18. The February online programs will encourage education, preservation and sustainable modern living as represented in the greater Palm Springs area through a love of midcentury modern design and architecture.

P

andemic, shmandemic! An excursion to The Living Desert continues to enchant visitors of all ages, with a chance to see animals from around the world in their natural habitats as well as a wide variety of plant life representing hundreds of global ecosystems. Set on more than 1,200 total acres, The Living Desert features miles of hiking trails and paved garden pathways, where guests can pursue physically distanced, personal health and wellness activity through outdoor exercise. Visitors are able to make advanced reservations online to select time slots. In addition to 50 botanical gardens,

attendees will be delighted by the “Australian Adventures” exhibit. The $3 million showcase occupies nearly one acre and features Australian plants and animals, including the immersive wallaby walkabout experience with free-flying budgies and cockatiels, an emu, a budgeriar, tawny frogmouths, kookaburras, yellow-footed wallabies and Australian reptiles. More than 50 native species of flora, all native to Australia, are also on view. Other exhibits include bighorn sheep, sand cats, Arabian oryx, cheetah, coyote, Grevy’s zebra, swift fox and warthog, all of which reinforce the park’s focus on habitat preservation and conservation.

Step back in history for shopping, dining and exploring Southern California’s hi-desert By Alison Elsner Pioneertown 53626 Mane Street Pioneertown visitpioneertown.com Yucca Valley 56711 29 Palms Highway Yucca Valley californiawelcomecenter.com Joshua Tree National Park 74485 National Park Drive Twentynine Palms nps.gov/jotr

A

few miles from the relative civilization of the Coachella Valley lies the region’s hi-desert, offering a weekend escape to rival that of any excursion you could dream of. In 1946, Pioneertown emerged as an 1880s themed motion-picture set, which today features a saloon, bank, bath house and livery stables on the winding, four-mile Mane Street, as well as a bowling alley open seasonally during summer. Pappy & Harriet’s is a favorite restaurant serving take-out meats, fish and burgers, and post-pandemic it’s expected to return to one of the area’s favorite live music venues.

Close by, day explorers can plan hiking in scenic Joshua Tree National Park, where the Mojave and the Colorado ecosystems meet. Known for surreal geologic features, the park is ensconced in natural beauty and provides an eye-opening education about native wildlife and biodiversity. Visitors will also find delightful boutiques in Yucca Valley such as Sagebrush Press Bookstore, Rainbow Stew, Lori’s Goods and The Hoodoo record store. This enchanted area comes alive on weekends, and visitors can enjoy a part of southern California rich in history and charmingly frozen in time.

Picture yourself inside the F-117 Stealth Fighter or flying a vintage warbird By Alison Elsner Palm Springs Air Museum 745 N. Gene Autry Trail Palm Springs Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission $16.50-$18.50 (free for military and kids 5 and under) F-117 Stealth Fighter experience $45 per person (check website for dates) @psairmuseum 760-778-6262 palmspringsairmuseum.org

FEBRUARY 2021

O

ne of the most enduring experiences in our collective history is that of the wartime era. The Air Museum displays an enormous collection of flyable wartime aircraft from Korea, Vietnam and Europe. Exhibits include restored planes like the P-51 Mustang “Bunny,” flown by Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Bob Friend in World War II. A series of six 90-minute events in February includes viewing the F-117 Stealth Fighter #-833 with a Skunk Works expert or pilot interpreter. The F-117 is the second-highest combat mission aircraft in the fleet, logging 75 combat hours during

Operation Desert Storm and Allied Force, with 5,140 hours of flight. Participants will receive a limitededition tee shirt after an up-close look at the cockpit. Unlike many other museums, here guests can actually fly in some of the vintage warbirds, choosing among the T-28 Trojan, PT-17 Stearman, P-51 Mustang or the T-33 Shooting Star Jet in a one-hour adventure. Exhibits celebrate the brave soldiers who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. Top off the visit by flying a simulator or giving the kids a chance to take the helm in the kidsized control tower.
