t’s well known that the magic of colorful lights has the power to lift spirits, something much needed this 2020 holiday season. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens will spark plenty of joy with WildLights, the annual light display held throughout the grounds of the zoo, presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation and sponsored by HiTech Lights. Now celebrating its 28th year, WildLights will amaze guests with over a million twinkling LED lights and festive activities, transforming The Living Desert into a luminescent winter wonderland. Advance reservations are required for both members and guests, and tickets are limited to accommodate for health and safety precautions.

Recognized as a “10Best Zoo Lights” in the country by USA Today, WildLights invites guests to take in the festive lights and sights while enjoying the dazzling tunnel of lights synchronized to music. Guests will be able to gaze at the lifesized, brightly-lit animal lanterns, holiday-themed G-scale model train display and animated light shows around the Zoo. Visitors of all ages will marvel in the “herds” of zebras and giraffes, a “coalition” of cheetahs and more, all of which reinforce The Living Desert’s educational mission of habitat protection and conservation research. New this year, Santa himself will be available for souvenir photos. Perched high in his festive sleigh to accommodate for social-distancing,

guests of all ages will be able to step into the front of his sleigh to pose for photos which will be available for purchase onsite and online following the event. With a new route for 2020, WildLights pathways will take guests on a journey around the Zoo with vantages of select animal habitats including the emus of the new Australian Adventures. There will be an enchanting assortment of sparkling animal sculptures, many representing species found at the Zoo. Guests can also take a spin on the carousel and make s’mores around a fire for an additional fee. Seasonal refreshments, holiday spirits, WildLights souvenirs and zoo-themed holiday gifts also will be available for purchase.

ith Palm Springs being the land of all things Mid Century Modern, the Palm Springs Vintage market has become a haven for retro home décor, valuable antiques and high-quality recycled items. This outdoor experience, originally founded in 2013, is an amalgam of a flea market, a garage sale and a thrift store, offering treasures for all ages and interests. Just in time for holiday shopping, visitors will find art, furniture, clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, dishware, collectibles, heirlooms, records, flowers, live plants and so much more. Sell-

ers reserve spaces to display items, and shoppers can enjoy strolling from one booth to the next against the mountain backdrop and under the rays of the winter sun. he produce isn’t the only fresh thing at the Palm Desert’s Certified Farmers’ Market. This popular outdoor shopping venue is moving to a new location on San Pablo Avenue, which offers guests access to the street’s recently reimagined pedestrian and bicycle friendly design. San Pablo will be closed between Alessandro Drive and San Gorgonio Way every Wednesday morning for the market. The previous location was at Entrada del Paseo in Palm Desert. Besides Palm Desert, other Certified Farmer’s Markets in the desert are located in Palm Springs and La Quinta, offering fresh flowers, chef’s

demonstrations, kids’ programs, music and health food initiatives for the CalFresh program. A perennial favorite, the Farmers’ Market gives residents and visitors an opportunity to shop for farm fresh produce and other artisanal products from farms such as Sage Mountain Farms, Glencairn Farms and Temecula Honey. The market’s nearly two-dozen farms are regionally-based, most within 100 miles of the Coachella Valley, and provide a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables and cheeses. In addition to the produce, the markets all offer a mouthwatering array of other farm raised and tasteful organic products.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Let’s Hike Places to stretch your legs in the high and low

desert

Amboy Amboy Crater This 4.1-mile round trip hike to an ancient volcano crater through lava field is a moderate hike off of Route 66 near the Mojave National Preserve. If you make it up the steep incline you will see where lava poured out over 24 square miles. Check out the dried lava landscape on Crater Road.

Cathedral City Cathedral Canyon Trail An approximate 1,000 foot elevation gain and a few steep inclines gives the trail a moderate rating with little shade. The 3.8-mile trail is used by mountain bikers and hikers. Park along the paved street near the end of Foothill Road.

Desert Hot Springs Mission Creek Stonehouse A historic structure tucked away in the lush wetlands of the Mission Creek Preserve. The stonehouse is a remnant of the area’s ranch days and features informational exhibits, as well as restrooms and picnic tables. Hikers with their fourlegged friends enjoy the easy 3.2-mile roundrip hike, which follows a stream and passes by an enormous Freemont cottonwood tree. 50550 Mission Creek Road.

Joshua Tree Joshua Tree National Park A sweeping array of nature and fitness treks greets guests across the 1,250 square mile breadth of space, which makes Joshua Tree among the most popular hiking, camping and rock climbing attractions to locals and visitors. For leisurely hikes, check out the 3-mile 49 Palms Oasis hike or the 4-mile Lost Horse Mine and mountain hike. 6554 Park Blvd.

Landers

Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountain National Monument is well worth it, and is a prime spot for a picnic. Access trail near the intersection of Calle Tecate and Avenida Madero. Boo Hoff Loop The first half of the 12.1-mile loop leads to views that stretch from the Salton Sea to the San Jacinto Mountains. The 2,574foot gain in elevation challenges experienced hikers, with hardly any shade, poorly marked paths and rocky terrain hikers are advised to exercise extreme caution. Corner of Avenida Bermudas and Calle Tecate, La Quinta.

Giant Rock The trail features the largest freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert. The trail is a 14.7-mile, lightly trafficked roundtrip trek that offers a chance to see wildlife and is great for all skill levels. The rock is located at Giant Rock Road.

Cove to Lake The first part of the 6.4-mile path is relatively flat, cutting through wideopen sandy terrain at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains before transitioning to more ups and downs. The path veers away from private property and heads towards Lake Cahuilla. Access the trailhead on Calle Tecate.

Morongo Valley

Bear Creek Canyon Trail After cruising through a flat, sandy wash for the first 30 minutes, the gain hits all at once around the two-mile mark. But the steep trek through the

of many local hikers and horseback riders. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive. Desert Willow Trail This moderate .75mile dirt trail wanderd through open fields of fall-blooming alkali golden-bush, along the edge of hone mesquite thicket, then drops into a desert wash habitat with desert willow, evergreen yerba santa and wild tarragon. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive. West Canyon Trail The trail is a .84-mile moderately difficult climb with some steep areas. After reaching the top of the saddle ridge, follow the slope to a panoramic view of Big Morongo Canyon. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive. Yucca Ridge Trail This moderate to difficult .72-mile trail fetures vegetation of the desert scrub, including creosote bush, Mojave yucca, Mormon tea, numerous species of cacti and even club moss clinging to the cool sides of the rock surfaces. View white dikes of aplite intruding into an ancient outcrop of gneiss that is over one billion years old and one of the oldest exposed rock formations in California.
