A

t long last, our favorite desert attraction is back open to the public. The Palm Springs Aerial Tram has developed a highly efficient way to accommodate a limited number of visitors to allow for comfortable social distancing on the tram cars that take riders on their journey from the valley station up to the mountain station at an elevation of 8,526 feet. Guests must purchase their tram tickets in advance by visiting the website and reserving a time slot up to two weeks in advance. The world’s largest rotating tram cars travel over two-and-one-half miles along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon, transporting riders to the pristine wilderness of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park. During the 10-min-

ute journey, the tram cars rotate slowly, offering picturesque and spectacular vistas of the valley floor below. Peak’s Restaurant and The Lookout Lounge are temporarily closed, but it’s of no mind as the experience is still amazing with jaw-dropping views from the observation decks, a walk through the natural history museum and the opportunity to explore the natural environment (campgrounds are closed for now). Wilderness trails have reopened, offering over 50 miles of hiking. For an excellent introduction to the park’s plants and animals, guests can follow the Long Valley Discovery Trail’s posts, providing a very manageable route. The Desert View Trail is a one-and-one-half loop trail,

moderately strenuous with short climbs, which leads to a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. And those familiar with the Round Valley hike know that it offers a fivemile roundtrip trail that leads to picturesque Round Valley, with fairly level trails and short climbs (moderately strenuous). Hungry hikers will be glad to hear that Pines Café is open for sandwiches, salads and beverages. Patrons are of course required to wears masks for safety. The tram car windows remain open during the ascent for fresh air circulation. Be sure to bring a sweater as the temperature at the top is a good 30 or more degrees cooler than on the desert floor.

Palm Springs Art Museum’s Art Party brings gala culture to an online audience By Alison Elsner Palm Springs Art Museum Art Party December 4 6 p.m. @psartmuseum 760-322-4800 psmuseum.org

OVID or not, there’s always a reason to celebrate and appreciate art. The Palm Springs Art Museum has come up with an innovative way to continue its vital fundraising efforts while giving patrons a way to enjoy a cultural evening. This year’s Art Party will be a digital version of the Museum’s largest annual gala, with funds directed to the Museum’s exhibition and education programs. The beauty of going digital is that the reach of the event is broadened way beyond the physical space of attending in person, making art accessible to an online audience. Guests will be treated to the unveiling of

a new work by artist Jeffrey Gibson whose multidisciplinary practice takes on a wide range of forms, including painting, sculpture and film. The artist draws on a variety of personal and political influences, including his combined Choctaw and Cherokee background, to create an evolving visual language that he uses to critique race, sexuality and other current socio-political issues. The evening will be capped by a celebrity emcee and a special entertainment performance. Sponsorships are available at multiple support tiers from $5,000 to $100,000. PEDAL TO JOY

Bike your way to fun, fitness and adventure in the Coachella Valley By Alison Elsner

T

he Coachella Valley, home to the Tour de Palm Springs, is one of the more accommodating landscapes for biking enthusiasts. Miles of scenic roads on largely flat terrain offer riders the chance to stay fit with views of the San Jacinto, Santa Rosa and San Gorgonio mountains from every angle. There are numerous routes that are manageable for all levels, including one that begins at the Palm Desert Civic Center and takes riders along a casual journey that is five miles out with a return to The River shopping complex in Rancho Mirage. By adding side routes, mileage can easily be increased to eight miles. Another popular route is the Gerald Ford/ Country Club loop, a doable street ride that tops out at eight to 10 miles. It winds through several ungated subdivisions with interesting structures and landscaping. Once in the Tamarisk neighborhood, riders can veer onto

alternate streets with limited traffic. A variation is to travel this loop by parking at the Trojan Plaza starting at the end of the Abrams-Butler Trail. With all of the charming neighborhoods in Palm Springs, there are dozens of bike tours through areas such as Old Las Palmas, Chino Canyon, Araby Cove, Demuth Park, Twin Palms, Tahquitz Canyon Estates, the Mesa, Canyon Corridor and so many others, each with its own styles of architecture and environmental personality. Joshua Tree National Park also presents 29 miles of gravel roads and various starting points, 40 miles east of Palm Desert on Interstate 10. Difficulty ranges from easy to moderate.

For those with more advanced skills who want a bit of a challenge, many of the valley’s hiking trails double as biking routes, such as the Hop Along Cassidy trail which takes peddlers out and back 11 miles. This trail starts at the tennis courts on the west side of Lake Cahuilla Park and ends at the junction of Cahuilla Park Road and Jefferson Street in Indio. When it comes to biking, there’s something here in the desert for every level of comfort and athletic prowess. iccio’s offers diners a taste of the old country with their trademark service and European personality. The original Riccio’s opened over 40 years ago, and today the restaurant continues to serve up steaks, seafood, veal, chicken, lamb, pasta and more.
