T
here’s one type of music that audiences never tire of, and that’s the cool, crooning sounds of Frank Sinatra. Performer Bob Anderson stars in this captivating show which honors the musical legacy of Frank Sinatra and his tremendous contribution to the Great American Songbook. Anderson truly embodies the essence of “Ol’ Blue Eyes” himself. Throughout the evening, fans will be able to experience Sinatra and his music at the peak of his career in the early 1970s. Bob Anderson, a singer and actor who is among the top singing impressionists in the world, not only sounds like Sinatra, but he looks like him too, thanks to prosthetic makeup that is spot-on. For each
performance, Anderson spends two hours in a makeup chair to transform his face into Frank’s, with a process created by the Academy Award-winning Kazu Tsuji, who helped turn Brad Pitt into Benjamin Button and Jim Carrey into the Grinch. The faux Sinatra toupée alone costs $8,000. And, Anderson’s tuxedos have to be specially made to match what Frank wore. For Anderson, transforming himself into Frank Sinatra – physically, vocally and facially – is all in an evening’s work. Anderson will be accompanied by a 32-piece orchestra playing all of Sinatra’s original arrangements to his most beloved songs. The Chairman of the Board himself would be proud of this homage to the Rat Pack
style which transcends the generations. Audiences can expect to hear both Sinatra’s hits and deeper cuts including “Luck Be a Lady,” “My Kind of Town,” “Come Fly with Me,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “For Once in My Life,” “Angel Eyes,” “That’s Life,” “It Was a Very Good Year,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Strangers in the Night,” “Summer Wind,” “One For My Baby (And One More for the Road),” “Night and Day” and more. Anderson has already made quite a mark on the Las Vegas strip and now brings his panache to the Coachella Valley. His highly acclaimed production will practically convince guests that they are watching the real thing.

irect from the Apollo Theatre, this star-studded show starring Patti Austin, Kurt Elling, Monica Mancini, Wé McDonald and Ledisi will take a look at the life and legacy of a singer who would go on to become one of the most revered vocalists of all time. Each performer embodies a different era of the jazz legend’s life intertwined with stories from her debut as a teenager at New York’s Apollo Theater to the peak of her fame. American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, who passed away in 1996, was sometimes referred to as the First
Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation and a “horn-like” improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. This talented group of vocalists has managed to capture the Queen’s sound and sensibility with integrity and spirit. The music highlights Ella’s greatest hits including “A Tisket A Tasket,” “Blues in the Night,” “Miss Otis Regrets,” “You’ll Have to Swing It” and more. The show also features the Ella All-Star Band with Shelly Berg, Nathan East, Brian Nova and Gregg Field.

or such a compact establishment, Paul Bar makes a giant statement. As bow tie-clad owner Paul O’Halloran says, “Welcome to civilization.” Combining classic cocktails, small plates and delectable dinners, this intimately-lit gem of a restaurant in the most unassuming of locations makes everyone feel welcome. Needle ($13 each). Other taste treats include the Frozen Sidecar ($10), a satisfying selection of beers on tap and by the bottle and wines by the bottle and glass. Small plates like chicken wings or fried calamari ($6-$13), large plates like pulled pork sandwich, chicken schnitzel or seared sea scallops ($13$24) and salads like iceberg wedge ($9) easily justify a stop here once per night for dinner, maybe twice. W
omen and men alike are looking forward to the 2020 ANA Inspiration, golf’s first major of the year and one of the LPGA Tour’s most prestigious events. Previously known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship and still sometimes referred to as the Dinah Shore, the tournament was founded in 1972 by David Foster and Dinah Shore and earned the designation as a major championship in 1983. All Nippon Airways became the title sponsor in late 2014. The tournament holds the distinction of being the second oldest golf tournament continuously held at the same course, that venue being Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. One of the five major champion-
ships of professional women’s golf, the tournament has become a popular tourist destination and draws thousands of spectators each year to the golf events and associated parties. Besides witnessing some of the greatest golf on the planet, there are plenty of family-oriented attractions to enjoy. One of the favorites is the ANA Experience where fans can sit in a simulated luxurious business or first-class class airline seat. There will also be an LPGA Lesson Zone where guests can participate in free, 10-minute swing lessons. The exhibit will also feature an interactive “Leap into Poppie’s Pond” area, where guests can show off their best leap and then share on social media to be entered to win round-
trip tickets to Tokyo. The real Poppie’s Pond, of course, adjacent to the 18th green, is one of the focal points of the Tournament. This beloved tradition of jumping in started in 1988 when the first champion’s leap into Poppie’s Pond was taken by Amy Alcott to celebrate her second win here. Each year, spectators eagerly await to see if the winner will carry on the tradition of celebrating victory by leaping into the pond which was dubbed in 2006 in honor of Terry Wilcox, the tournament director from 1994 through 2008, known as “Poppie” to his grandchildren. Any way you slice it, the event provides 72 holes of fun, food, drink and excitement for fans and friends of the sport.

R
eporter and author Bob Woodward gained international attention when he and Carl Bernstein uncovered the Watergate scandal in 1973. Since then, Watergate’s theme of secret government has driven Woodward’s tough but fair non-partisan reporting. He pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of Washington, revealing in meticulous detail what’s really going on in the halls of power and asking probing questions. Woodward has written about the last nine U.S. presidents and chronicled how the power of the presidency has evolved. He is author of 19 bestselling books, 13 of which
reached number one, more than any contemporary nonfiction writer. His latest bestseller, “Fear: Trump in the White House,” is the deepest dive ever made into the first months of any American president. Currently associate editor for “The Washington Post” where he’s worked since 1971, Woodward has won nearly every American journalism award including two Pulitzers. The presentation is part of the Palm Springs Speaks series produced by the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Friends of the Palm Springs Library, benefitting both organizations equally. Every guest will receive a copy of Woodward’s book.

A
valley favorite for outstanding Mexican food and kick-it margaritas since 1992, Casuelas Café underwent a redesign in 2018 which has added a spacious and vibrant patio space under the stars, lovingly dubbed “El Zocalo.” Part of the Las Casuelas family, this festive venue now ushers in one of the more hip and happening nightlife venues in the region with the addition of nightly live music and the same delicious, south-of-the-border grub and grog. Starting the week off in just the right groove, Monday nights feature the sounds of The Mighty Sweet Nothings, one of the valley’s favorite country bands, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On Tuesdays, guests are treated to Johnny Meza and Tony
Bolivar and on Wednesdays, Marc Antonelli, also from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. bring in a special musical guest. The weekend gets into full swing on Friday and Saturday nights with The Myx Paul Villalobos Trio from 6 p.m. to closing. On Sunday nights, diners get a twofer, with Las Tias performing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Paul Douglas from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The perfect accompaniment to the musical entertainment here is the flavorful and colorful selection of beverages. Specialty margaritas are served in regular ($9.50) and large ($18) with date, tamarinda, fruit (strawberry, peach or midori), ala fresca, sangria and pepino con chile. The cantina serves up a variety
of “Hall of Fame” tequilas like Don Julio Anejo and Cazadores ($10.25$11.50) as well as cervezas and wines by the glass. The food is more than satisfying, with appetizers like quesadilla de camarones, ceviche and nachos ($8.95-$19.95) and ensaladas like tostada suprema and chopped chicken cilantro ($15.75-$16.95). There are also burritos, hamburgers and house specials like steak picado, pork shank, pescado a la veracruzano and lobster Baja style ($17.95-$37.50). Top off the evening with flan or deep fried ice cream ($5.95-$7.95). After a night partying here, you’ll be sold on Casuelas Café for your taste of Mexico right here in the desert.

In the second half of the February 6 Desert Symphony concert, Top of the World will perform 18 hit songs of The Carpenters, and the opening half is the orchestra’s time to shine with the following lush program: “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” “My Funny Valentine,” “You Made Me Love You,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Let’s Do It” and “Love Notes.”
ack in 1975, the Emmy-winning “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” won critical acclaim for the production, music, writing, directing and its stars, Maureen Stapleton and Charles Durning. The Broadway production of “Ballroom” was Michael Bennett’s next directorial effort after “A Chorus Line.” It won the 1979 Tony for Choreography, was nominated for eight Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards. ‘Sister Act’
The movie that finally offered Whoopi Goldberg the right kind of vehicle, “Sister Act,” is the February 7-March 8 production of the HiDesert’s Theatre 29. When disco diva Deloris Van Carter witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in a convent, certainly a good cover. Her unique disco moves and singing inspire an otherwise dour Mother Superior and other nuns, who turn into her biggest fans and body guards. It’s a hoot. THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Let’s Hike
Places to stretch your legs Amboy Crater Formed of ash and cinders, the 250-foot-high Amboy Crater rises from one of the youngest volcanic fields in the United States. A hiking trail winds to the rim with rest stations along the way. If you make it to the top, you’ll see the breach where lava poured out over 24 square miles, creating a landscape of dried lava lakes, collapsed lava tubes and sinks, spatter cones and massive flows of basalt. This can be a dangerous area. Don’t venture out in the heat, bring a gallon of water per person per day, hike with a partner and always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Crater Road eight miles off National Trails Highway. blm.gov/visit/amboy-crater Bear Creek Oasis Trail 8 miles in and out, with an elevation rise of 1,989 feet. Considered strenuous. From the Cove Oasis trailhead at the top of La Quinta Cove, follow Bear Creek Canyon to where the trail leaves the sandy wash. Follow the signs. Hikers on this trail enjoy the beautiful palm oasis at the end. Bump and Grind Trail 3 mile loop with an elevation rise of 523 feet. This trail is probably the most popular trail in the desert and frequented by exercisers who start behind Desert Crossings shopping center in Palm Desert. Clara Burgess Trail 4.4 miles round trip with an elevation of 1,339 feet. The trail is the only route to the summit of Murray Hill, a prominent conical peak just south of Palm Springs. It is best seen when heading south on Gene Autry Trail and, although it is only a couple miles to the peak, it is strenuous with a steep incline.
Visitors can enjoy fantastic views of the Joshua Tree National Park while hiking, camping or exploring the town. Only a 45 minute drive from Palm Springs to a unique environment and community.
Eisenhower Peak Loop 6 mile loop with an elevation gain of 700 feet. This trail is considered moderate and is part of the Living Desert preserve (admission fee required) in Palm Desert. The trail begins at the Eastern edge of the Living Desert and takes hikers toward Eisenhower Peak. The trail is a good representation of desert terrain and makes a perfect beginning to a Living Desert tour. Giant Rock The largest freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert, Giant Rock covers 5,800 square feet of ground and stands seven stories high off the ground at its highest point. Native Americans once considered it sacred, and in the 1930s German immigrant Frank Critzer dug a space under the rock to live in. One of Critzer’s friends later said he was contacted by aliens there. Today, the rock is a popular tourist destination and a photo opportunity for visitors from across the globe. Past Belfield Boulevard in Landers Joshua Tree National Park Characterized by its huge rock formations and immense Joshua tree forest, the national park lies where the Mojave Desert meets the low Colorado Desert. Hike through the trails that weave through the Hidden Valley, travel to Keys View and look out over the Coachella Valley or bring your rock climbing equipment and scale some of the most interesting geological formations in the California desert. nps.gov/jotr Lake Cahuilla Just six miles from Old Town La Quinta, the 710-acre park at the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains offers a great outdoor family day with hiking, coupled with a host of recreational selections ranging from shore fishing to horseback riding. Museum Trail 2 miles round trip with an elevation change of around 1,000 feet. This hike is quite strenuous because of the rapid incline. The trailhead is just behind the museum off Palm Canyon Drive in Downtown Palm Springs. Turn around at the picnic tables. Randall Henderson Trail 2.4 mile loop with a gently rising elevation change of 423 feet. This easy trail offers a good introduction to desert hiking for the novice. It starts and ends at the National Monument Visitor Center in Palm Desert on Highway 74. Check the Visitor Center for guided hikes during the winter season. South Lykken Trail 4.4 miles with an elevation of just over 1,000 feet. This is considered strenuous and the north end of the trail starts at the west end of Mesquite Road, just south of downtown Palm Springs off South Palm Canyon Drive. There is no parking at the trailhead, but street parking is available. The hike is pretty strenuous for the first mile or so and then it levels off and one gets a great view of the Indian Canyons golf courses and South Palm Canyon communities. It is a beautiful hike and ends along South Palm Canyon Drive towards Indian Canyon. You will need to have vehicles at both ends.
