BRECON ESTATE A CAVE EXPLORING WINEMAKER Here’s a comparison that sounds like it’s heading into food pairing territory—but don’t lick your lips just yet. Now, foodies do seem to get remarkably excited about various benefits of grass fed versus corn-fed beef. At the center of the debate is the sizzle factor, the texture, flavor profile and cookability. Yum! It is, of course, supported by a whole host of conflicting scientific data. Whichever side you come down on, and you may be feeling hungry already, there’s no doubt that the food source does influence the quality of what the chef eventually plates for you. Wine is no different, except the food source is the soil and its various micro-nutrients. Winemakers get remarkably excited about soil types but, at the end of the day, good dirt is one of the hardest things associated with wine to write about in an engaging and fun sense.

There is just a bewildering array of soil types, each may impart different flavors to the wine in ways you might not expect. Before we get copious complaints from other vineyard owners there is no right or wrong soil type. Just differences in the final wine which the individual taster may perceive as beneficial. The fun of wine is exploring some of these differences in the glass. As a general rule the poorer the soil, the better. That is why thin soiled hilltops are popular as super premium vineyards. They limit the vigor of the vine, producing smaller berries and, as most of the flavor and color is in the skin, the juice to skin ratio is preferable, ie more skin less juice. Vine roots go deep. Really deep. I am an avid cave explorer and have often been invited into cave systems under vineyards. The vineyard owners had become rightly concerned that their machinery might collapse into a cave! In such caves, vine roots have been found searching for water and nutrients some thirty to forty feet underground, meandering over the passage floors in search of hidden sustenance. Caves are most often formed in limestone and this brings up one of the traditionally most popular soil types for viticulture. Think Champagne, Saint-Emilion, the Cote d’Or, Coonawarra, seemingly most of Southern Italy and of course Brecon Estate in Paso Robles. There is good reason, as these calcium-based rocks and their associated, well-drained, calcareous soils are high pH but ironically they produce wines that have fantastic natural acidity (low pH). It’s all to do with the reduced potassium uptake and beneficially means the winemaker rarely needs

Up until the mid20th century supplementing the wines natural acidity was not a practical proposition. Wines with brighter acids from calcareous soils lasted longer, were less prone to spoilage, and were more consistently world class in terms of flavor profile, minerality, mouthfeel and tannin perception than other local wines with perhaps softer flabbier acidity. Keep a look out for strange backhoe pits in empty fields during your travels in wine country. These might be test holes dug in prospective vineyard sites by the local “Dr. Dirt� or more appropriately a soil scientist. Now these guys really, really get excited about sub-layers. OPOLO VINEYARDS Under a shaded table, four guests raise glasses of Mountain Zin in a toast to a welcome rain shower. Across the patio, yet another crispy pizza pie is served hot from the wood-fired oven. Inside the tasting room, a duo of wine club members treat their friends to a Reserve flight of wines. It’s another winter day in February, but the mood is anything but somber at Opolo Vineyards. Whether you live on the Central Coast or are a first-time visitor, Opolo Vineyards is a must for enjoying what the Paso Robles region has to offer. There are many red and white wines to choose from inside the friendly and well-appointed tasting room, but Mountain Zinfandel is Opolo’s flagship. Priced at just $29 a bottle, this jammy, fullbodied head-turner boasts plenty of raspberry, Bing cherry, dark plum, boysenberry, and vanilla with a pleasing measure of oak on the finish done just right. In fact, Wine Enthusiast scored Opolo’s Mountain Zinfandel 2015 and 2016 vintages at 92 and 93 points, respectively.

Popular this season is Opolo’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cab comes with the caution that “this wine is not for the faint of heart!” Black cherry, chocolate-covered blueberries and cooking herbs occupy their spaces on the palate. Ample texture is felt in the mid-mouth, while rich tannins, lingering coffee and charred beef bring satiation to the finish. Among Opolo’s impressive Reserve wines is the Rhapsody Bordeaux blend. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc and Malbec make this wine one of the heavy hitters to enjoy with a steak dinner or to cellar for special occasions. All three wines are a great way to taste Opolo’s best offerings and make for romantic sipping on Valentine’s Day or as the perfect gift. Pairings on the Patio are available daily from 11am until 4pm. TACKITT FAMILY VINEYARDS WARRIORS OF THE EOD WARRIOR FOUNDATION Tackitt Family Vineyards in San Miguel is a familyowned and dog-friendly boutique winery that specializes in handcrafted premium wines. Sourced from local vineyards, Tackitt creates a variety of red and white wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Barbera, Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, their family tradition Gewürztraminer wine and more. Winemaker Leon Tackitt and his wife Cindy Tackitt take a close-knit approach to their relationship with wine and community, and it shows. Leon’s former U.S. Navy career specialty in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) might seem a world away from winemaking, but nothing could be further from the truth. At Tackitt Family Vineyards, Leon has found the perfect springboard to help support the military veteran community through his involvement with a nonprofit organization called EOD Warrior Foundation. EOD Warrior Foundation seeks to honor and equip veterans
through memorials, scholarships, health and welfare, financial support for families, Gold Star family retreats, PTSD and traumatic injury-related rehabilitation and more. Every year, Leon and his crew do their best to keep the bar high for the quality of their winemaking, but exceeding their philanthropic goals are vital. “We have great news to share about our Warrior Brosé wine release last summer,” said Leon. “We’ve raised $12,000 toward providing a veteran with a service animal. This wine was made in memory of one of my best friends from the Navy, CDR Kevin Childre, a staunch supporter of the EOD Warrior Foundation. Kevin was killed in a freak bicycle accident over three years ago. We teamed up with his wife to produce this wine in his honor.” In 2017, the winery raised $44,339 to benefit the nonprofit EOD Warrior Foundation. In April 2018, Tackitt raised $50,000. On April 12, 2019, Leon hopes to multiply that number times ten with the help of the community and visitors who support the Warrior Foundation through Tackitt’s EOD line of wines and a fun, new project in the works, called Blaster’s Garage.
Blaster’s Garage “A good friend of mine, Eric Symonds, and I started a YouTube series called Blaster’s Garage. Our main goal is to raise $500,000 for the EOD Warrior Foundation and Quality of Life Plus organizations. Both support our veterans,” said Leon. “We are rebuilding a 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser and selling 5,000 raffle tickets at $100 apiece. The truck is going to be magnificent!” Blaster’s Garage is sharing their progress on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. “Our secondary goal is to highlight our veterans. We try and single one out to interview and showcase during an episode, he emphasized. “We’re also highlighting the organizations and the great things they are doing for our veterans. As a 27-year veteran, it gives me great pleasure to support our veterans as much as we can.”

Can be paired with prosciutto and pistachio flavored items. • 2015 Zinfandel from Huerhuero Vineyards. Having a juicy finish with hints of black pepper. Can be eaten with cranberry pork sausage to highlight the flavors. • 2015 Syrée with a creamy texture and dark cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. Perfect with smoked prime rib. • 2012 Segredo with a rich bodied flavor. This can be paired with a dark chocolate flourless cake or brownie.

VINA ROBLES LOOKING TO THE FUTURE With all six of its estate vineyards SIP Certified Sustainable, and a new winery that adheres to these same principles, Vina Robles is committed to environmental stewardship. Fruit from the 2018 harvest this Fall was the first to be crushed at the new winery, where state-of-the-art technologies support Kevin’s hands-on methods to ultimately create wine of enhanced quality. The winery is not open to the general public, however all will be invited to an open house in the Spring of 2019.
Just the Right Venue for Your Next Wine Tasting Experience When you visit their hospitality center you will find it large and inviting. You can taste indoors sitting by the fireplace or sip your wine at a bistro table on the patio. The tasting room features wines from the Estate Series and the Limited Edition Estate Collection. Tastings include five wine choices. Group tastings can be held for 10 people or more. If you want to go beyond the traditional wine tasting experience, Vina Robles provides wine and food pairings Thursday through Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Simply contact the hospitality center to sign up. You will have a chance to try four courses of small plates of gourmet food paired with Vina Robles’ Limited Estate Collection wines. This is a great way for someone new to wine or wine lovers to learn more about pairing their favorite wines with the perfect food. The wine and food experience costs $70 for the general public, and $55 for Signature Club members. Reservations are required 48 hours in advance. For those who want to find the best cheeses to pair with their wine, Vina Robles has the perfect solution. The wine and cheese experience offered at the winery, provides tasting of five or six artisan cheeses paired with Vina Robles’ Limited Estate Collection wines. Your host highlights the different flavor profiles and explains why certain cheeses are paired with particular wines. This experience is $35 for the general public, and $30 for Signature Club members. If you have the opportunity to visit their amphitheater you are in for a particularly memorable experience. You can hear great bands, such as Los Lobos, The Gipsy Kings and Alice in Chains, and try some of Vina Robles’ new releases at the same time. 11th Annual Wine 4 Paws, April 6-7: Fundraiser For Woods Humane Society
Big plans are underway for the 11th Annual Wine 4 Paws Weekend. With almost 100 wineries on board, we’re expecting great things. For this year’s weekend, we will have Earth & Fire Brewers in Paso Robles on board again, with others in the works. Olivas de Oro, offering estate Olive Oil, has moved to Tin City and will be donating 10% of all sales for the weekend. We’re kicking off the weekend on Friday, April 5th with a Block Party hosted by some of our downtown Paso Robles Tasting Rooms! On Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, Wine 4 Paws is at participating Tasting Rooms from San Luis Obispo to San Miguel, making it easy to visit any winery you like. In this County-wide event, each participating winery contributes to Wine 4 Paws in different ways - some donate 100% of tasting fees, others donate a percentage of sales for the weekend. Woods Humane Society cares for over 3,000 cats and dogs each year at their facilities in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero until they can be united with loving families. In November of 2018, they opened the first North County low-cost spay and neuter clinic at their location in Atascadero. This clinic can be utilized by any pet owner. How can you ensure that Woods can continue to offer our community animals the highest level of care? By participating in Wine 4 Paws!
When you head out to enjoy our wineries during Wine 4 Paws on April 6 & 7, you can help the animals at Woods by simply tasting wine and taking home your favorite bottles! Wine 4 Paws began in 2009 as a way to help raise money for Woods Humane Society while promoting the Central Coast Wine Region. It has grown from the initial 35 wineries to almost 100! Overall, Wine 4 Paws has raised almost $350,000 for Woods.
Woods Humane Society is a nonprofit organization which receives no tax funds, but is supported by donations, grants, bequests, fundraising events and fees for services. Woods is independent of San Luis Obispo County Animal Services, but works in close cooperation with them and other animal groups in the county for the welfare of all animals. As part of their commitment to work towards ending pet overpopulation, not only is every animal at Woods spayed or neutered, they also provide low-cost spay and neuter services for San Luis Obispo County Animal Services, many other local rescue organizations and for owned animals in the county. The Humane Education Program offers a wide range of activities for tots to teens and provides insight and enrichment for the next generation of animal advocates. Their full-time Training and Behavior Coordinator provides expert care for dogs in our adoption program as well as dog obedience training classes for the public, designed to keep pets in their homes and out of shelters. Financial support from donors and the dedication of the staff and hundreds of volunteers ensure the success of our work. Director Sarah Tomasetti said, “Every

year as the event grows, I’m reminded of what an amazing community we live in. These wineries are always so excited to participate and are always looking at new ways to promote the event and raise more money. And the people who come out to for the weekend are so dedicated to the event. 2019 Paso Robles Wine Country Events Announced, Tickets On Sale Tickets for Paso Robles Wine Country’s marquee events are now on sale at www.pasowine.com. The annual celebration of Paso’s heritage variety, Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend is scheduled for March 15-17. Paso Robles’ signature wine event, the Paso Robles Wine Festival celebrates its 37th year on May 16-19. Now is the time to plan, for Paso Wine, in 2019. Vintage Paso: Zinfandel Weekend begins on Friday, March 15 with Zinposium, a Zin-focused seminar in downtown Paso Robles at the Paso Robles Inn Ballroom. Moderated by iconic winemaker, Neil Collins, owner and winemaker of Lone Madrone, a panel of winemakers will discuss dry farming Zinfandel and Zin blended wines. Join up to 20 Paso wineries for a savory walk-around Zinfandel tasting, complemented by a fantastic selection of desserts and live jazz. Zinfandel Weekend continues on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 with more than 100 wineries holding their own individual events throughout Paso Robles Wine Country. GLUNZ FAMILY WINERY & CELLARS
The first thing one notices when talking with Stephan Glunz is his enthusiasm about what he does for a living, which is grow grapes, make great wine, and tell folks about it. Glunz Family Winery & Cellars may seem somewhat new to Paso Robles, but the commitment to making the best wine is evident in passion and an unshakable work ethic. Brothers Matt and Steve Glunz are two of ten siblings. Raised in Illinois, they are each hands-on in every aspect of the operation, from the vineyard to production to marketing. The Glunz family story goes all the way back to 1888, when great-grandfather Louis Glunz emigrated from his native Westphalia, Germany, to Chicago, where he delivered beer to prominent brewery Wacker & Birk and learned the ropes before beginning his own family company. “I worked in the bottling line at age five, but it was the opposite of intimidating” Steve recalled. “We’re a fifth-generation family business. Our father, Joseph Glunz, worked in the wholesale end of the business, which had been very successful. He sold J. Lohr wines in Chicago and became familiar with Paso Robles wines. In 1992, Matt and I began our winery with small-batched fortified wines. My father thought we were crazy to pick up stakes and move to California, but at age 79, he’s blending for us now,” laughed Steve. “There’s no nepotism here. In our family, if you wanted to work in the family business, you have to learn from others and work outside the family business for at least five years,” Steve confirmed. “No one is handed the keys; we work for everything. The flagship, Mission Angelica, is a Solera-style fortified wine that’s aged in oak for an average of 25 years. Santa Maria Costa de Oro Tasting Room Costa de Oro Tasting Room is located right off of Highway 101 in Santa Maria. This site pays tribute to the history behind Costa De Oro — it was the strawberry stand for Gold Coast Farms, the parent company of Costa De Oro, which has been farming Santa Maria since 1978. Gold Coast Vineyard was planted to 20 acres of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay in 1989, and these grapes were sold to the area’s best wineries — including Au Bon Climat. Gary Burk, Costa de Oro co-owner and winemaker, was fortunate to work in the winery with Jim Clendenen from 1994-2002, and during this time he began to make his own wine. Gary started with just one barrel of Chardonnay and one barrel of Pinot Noir. Today, Costa de Oro produces more than 6000 cases featuring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the estate — Gold Coast Vineyard. At the 2017 Central Coast Wine Competition their Estate Chardonnay won “Best of Show” and their Estate Pinot Noir received a “Gold Medal.” The best place to experience the wines is at the tasting room, where guests can taste five wines for only $10.
Live Music In addition to their regular tasting room hours (normally 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily), they have music three nights a week...Thursday
5-7 p.m. (Classical), Friday evening, “Friday Night Wine Downs” featuring live music from local musicians & $12 food plates available. Then on Saturdays they have acoustic music 3 to 5 p.m.
Kegs Another facet to the Costa de Oro portfolio is their “Wine on Tap.” Kegged wine, wine stored and shipped inside five gallon kegs instead of bottles, has been gaining popularity throughout the past several years. Costa de Oro started kegging wine for high-end accounts, like Roy’s Hawaii. Now these wines, a white and a red, are available in the tasting room by the glass and by the growler (these can be refilled). Coquelicot Estate Vineyard Come For The Wine-Enjoy the Fun! My first thought entering Coquelicot’s tasting room in Los Olivos, was “WOW~! THIS is going to be great.” Being greeted by Laurie as I stepped over the threshold, her enthusiasm and bubbly personality instantly set the tone for what was to come: A great time wine tasting, lots of fun and feeling instantly welcomed. Laurie, with her smile, sense of humor and friendliness is like a bottle of bubbly-full of zest, ready to pour, spreading cheer all around and making certain you have a fun and memorable visit.
Wine and Time Coquelicot’s philosophy is simple: To make approachable, well regarded wine, and sell it when ready to drink, and do they deliver! Wines are aged and not released until ready to “pop n pour.” Coquelicot wants you to be able to enjoy your wine immediately! Reviewing their tasting menu, you will see, and be treated to, a variety of wines from as far back as the 2011 vintage; drinkable now, but certainly age worth. All of the wines are produced from estate grown grapes, which are not only organically grown on the 58 acres (receiving CCOF Certification* in 2010), but are also vegan friendly! *CCOF: California Certified Organic Farmers: Meeting standards established by the USDA National Organic Program.
The Tasting Experience Choose your tasting from either the “Winemaker’s Flight” or the “Reserve Winemaker’s Flight.” Whichever you select, you can’t go wrong and each includes Coquelicot’s flagship “Mon Amour Estate blend.” The intimate tasting room is a space to meet other likeminded fans as you sip at the bar or elongated table. The Garagiste Wine Festival, which was named America’s Best Wine Festival by USA Today, returns February 8-10 to Solvang, which was named One of America’s 10 Best Small Historic Towns by USA Today. This marks the seventh year that the Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure has showcased the wines of some of California’s best small-production winemakers in one of California’s most charming small towns, which is celebrating its 107th anniversary this year. Solvang is in the heart of the renowned Santa Ynez Valley wine country, just north of picturesque Santa Barbara. “America’s best wine festival meets one of America’s best historic small towns for the seventh year in a row…what could make for a better wine country weekend?” said Garagiste Festival Co-founder Doug Minnick. “There is a special place in our hearts for Solvang, and for the amazing small-production winemakers who pour at this venue. Solvang, and the beautiful Veteran’s Memorial Hall, lend such a charming and intimate setting for attendees to chat and taste with the winemakers and owners who will be pouring their hard-to-find wines. We love the diversity of the wines poured here, with multiple micro-climates, grape varieties and innovative blends represented.” More than 40 winemakers from Santa Barbara County and across California converge at Solvang’s Mission-style Veterans’ Memorial Hall to pour more than 150 wines over three days of events which include the continuation of the festival’s “Original Garagiste” seminars, moderated by Garagiste Festival Co-founder and KRUSH radio host, Stewart McLennan, and, this year featuring Central Coast winemaking legend Ken Brown of Ken Brown Wines. “We are proud to lead off our main event with a one-on-one discussion and tasting with Ken Brown – a true original ‘garagiste’ many years before micro-production winemaking became a movement,’ said McLennan. “Ken was one of the first to recognize the cool climate potential of this region back in the ’70s and to craft delicious wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay right here in Santa

Carivintâs Winery A wine tasting experience at Carivintâs in Solvang is designed to be relaxed and inviting. The tasting room is a family and pet friendly place. Carivintâs wants customers to enjoy their wines in an environment that will make everyone, even the family dog, happy.
A Tasting Room Made for Comfort Carivintâs created their tasting room with a goal in mind. They started by asking themselves a question, “What would prevent people from going wine tasting on a regular basis?” They came up with several answers, which included the fact that it is difficult to take children to a tasting room that has a formal or stuffy atmosphere. Another reason people might not find it easy to go wine tasting is the fact that some tasting rooms don’t welcome pets. The family dog would have to stay at home alone. And the final reason Carivintâs representatives thought that people might be dissuaded from a wine tasting experience was the hours. Longer hours could accommodate more people. With these ideas in mind, Carivintâs designed a tasting room to address these concerns. For children, the tasting room has puzzles, legos, and coloring books, as well as fast internet. For dogs, the tasting room offers beds, water and treats. And for those wishing to visit a tasting room later on in the evening, Carivintâs is open most days until 7 p.m.
A Wide Variety of Wines In Carivintâs tasting room you will find many wines to choose from. Winemaker Fleet Hamilton produces wines from many different varietals including Barbera, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Viognier, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc. Some of the new releases in the tasting room include: 2017 Rosé, barrel fermented, with aromas of strawberries, wildflowers and quince. 2013 Syrah aged 5 years in 30% new American oak, a wine with aromas of, vanilla, black cherry, and smoky oak. Wine with a Philanthropic Bent One of the things that makes Carivintas special is its emphasis on philanthropy. When you visit the tasting room you might notice the many pictures of dogs and other animals adorning the walls and even the labels on the wine bottles. Many of Carivintâs wines, the ones that feature dogs or horses namedMon-Fri. Lillie or 12-7 Oz Sat-Sun 11-7 on the label, serve as a way to raise money for organizations that support animals. A part of the proceeds from the sale of these wines goes to organizations like Old Yeller Ranch Rescue, Shadow’s Fund, and Return to Freedom, an American Wild Horse Sanctuary.
