Sunnylands offers condolences to the Bush family after the passing of former President George H.W. Bush
W
ith heavy hearts, the trustees of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands offer condolences to the family and friends of former President George H.W. Bush. The 41st president, who died Friday, and First Lady Barbara Bush, who passed away in April, were treasured friends of Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg and visited Sunnylands regularly during the Bush presidency for vacations, dinners, parties, and philanthropic events.
“The foundation cherishes the friendship and memories that President George H.W. Bush and his wife shared with the Annenbergs. His legacy will serve as an inspiration to Sunnylands staff and trustees for years to come,” said David J. Lane, president of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands. George H.W. Bush was the fifth president to visit Sunnylands and, like others who arrived from the White House, he both relaxed and conducted business at the Annen-
berg estate in Rancho Mirage. On his visits, the president would get up early in the morning to fish, play 18 holes of golf, and head back to the lakes to fish again. In March 1990, President Bush notably hosted an official dinner at Sunnylands, a rarity outside the White House, after an emergency summit with then-Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu of Japan. The formal gathering brought together two nations for an evening of diplomacy during a time of tense relations between Japan
and the United States. The City of Rancho Mirage recognized the dinner by declaring Sunnylands a historic site that same year. On that same trip, President Bush was present for the March 4, 1990 ceremony announcing Walter and Leonore Annenbergs’ $50 million donation to the United Negro College Fund. • If you received all of the gifts in the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” you’d have 364 presents. • The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is an apt time to consider the word “crapulous,” which means “sick from excessive eating or drinking.” • As the holidays approach and you’re out shopping for gifts, you might want to keep this in mind: According to survey results, siblings are the worst holiday gift-givers, getting the lowest marks from 21% of respondents. So you might be surprised to learn that during WW II, Ocoee earned the distinction of sending more men, per capita, to serve in the military than any other town in the U.S. Thought for the Day: “Fame is very agreeable, but the bad thing is that it goes on 24 hours a day.” -- Gabriel Garcia Marquez © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

‘The Sound of Music’ on stage: One of ‘My Favorite Things’ By Alison Elsner One of the all-time stage classics is here just in time for the holidays. The story is based on the actual life of Maria von Trapp, who leaves an Austrian convent to serve as governess to the children of a widowed naval officer. Her growing rapport with the youngsters gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry—only to learn the news that the Captain must go off to war. The final collaboration
between the famous Rodgers & Hammerstein, this musical won 10 Tony Awards in its original Broadway run and inspired the five-time Academy Award-winning film starring Julie Andrews, remaining the most popular movie musical of all time. Audiences will recognize classic songs like “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Do-Re-Mi.” Now in its sixth season, Desert Theatreworks (DTW) is an important part of the community cul-
tural scene. This 2018-19 Season, DWT will again produce nine plays and musicals throughout the year. An added bonus is being able to visit the many cafés and restaurants in Old Town Indio for a pre-show supper or après-theater cocktail! Desert Theatreworks presents “The Sound of Music” from December 7-23 at the Indio Performing Arts Center located at 451745 Fargo Street in Indio. For tickets and times, visit dtworks.org.

A Head-to-Toe Guide to Winter Warmth
insulated one that also covers your ears.
The official start of winter is just weeks away. For seniors, weather this cold can present problems. Sometimes circulation isn’t the best because blood vessels aren’t as elastic as they once were. Seniors also lose a fat layer under the skin. Hypothermia is a very real danger, but there are ways to stay warm when you have to go out.
Neck: Heat rises, and all that saved-up core heat can escape unless you use a scarf. Thick ones that wind around the neck more than once will go a long way toward holding in trapped warmth.
Head: Heat also rises out of the top of the head. Even when you’re indoors, a cap can help you stay warm. For outdoors, look for an
Hands: Double up on the layers of your gloves. Here’s a hint: Use a pair of thin gloves as the first layer and then add an insulated mitten over that. Core: While a thick coat might seem to be enough, adding a vest
underneath will keep your chest and back warm. It’s also a great item to keep handy and wear around the house. Legs: Consider pants or jeans.

Feet: A double layer of wool socks can help keep toes warm, as can insulated boots. After all, we can’t just stay inside all winter. We have places to go, things to do and people to see. © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Recipe of the Week

The Kitchen Diva By Angela Shelf Medearis
NO-SALT SPICE MIX No or Low-Salt Diet: This recipe can be used for all savory dishes and provides an abundance of flavorful spices to compensate for the lack of salt. Using this allpurpose spice mix is a healthier way to cook for your guests. For those who want to add salt, simply place a saltshaker on the table. • 1 cup (8-ounce jar) onion powder • 1 cup (8-ounce jar) garlic powder • 3 tablespoons poultry seasoning • 3 tablespoons ground pepper • 1 tablespoon paprika • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves • 1/8 teaspoon sugar or stevia Combine all ingredients in a small jar with a shaker top and use to season all savory dishes. Makes about 2 3/4 cups. ROOT VEGGIE AU GRATIN Serve up this vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free au gratin as a main dish or side. The blend of cashews, nutritional yeast (which is healthy and tastes like cheese) and the broth from the cooked vegetables mimic the butter and cheese flavors in traditional au gratin dishes. Serves 8. • 1 medium butternut squash, peeled, seeds discarded, and cut into pieces • 1 large parsnip or carrot, cut in half • 1 large sweet potato or baking potato, whole, not peeled • 1 medium-large turnip or rutabaga, whole, not peeled • 1 medium onion • 8 ounces curly kale, ribs discarded, leaves chopped (5 packed cups) • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 1/2 tablespoons All-Purpose • No-Salt Spice Mix • Zest of 1 small lemon • 1 cup raw, unsalted cashews, soaked for at least 10 minutes
• 2 tablespoons rice flour • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast 1. Place the butternut squash, carrot or parsnip, sweet or baking potato, and turnip or rutabaga into a large pot and cover with water. Bring water to a boil and cook for 30 minutes. 2. Strain the vegetables from the water and reserve 2 cups of the liquid for later use. Let the vegetables cool. 3. Slice the cooked vegetables and the onion into medium-sized rounds of even size and thickness. Place the cooked vegetables, onion and kale into a large bowl. Season with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 2 tablespoons of the spice mix and the lemon zest. Toss to combine. 4. Heat oven to 350 F. Lightly oil an 8-by-8-inch baking dish with 1/2 tablespoon olive oil. Layer the root vegetables in the dish as desired until the vegetables are almost to the top of the dish. Set dish aside while you make the sauce. 5. Strain the water from the cashews and place the cashews in a blender along with 2 cups of reserved cooking water from the vegetables, remaining 1/2 tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 tablespoon nosalt seasoning, the rice flour and the nutritional yeast. Blend until ingredients are combined and no more cashew pieces remain. 6. Pour the cashew mixture over the layered root vegetables and bake for 35 minutes, until golden brown and bubbling.
