CELEBRATING THE RESIDENTIAL PARK COMMUNITIES FOR 63 YEARS
HANUKKAH TRADITIONS IN THE DESERT Commemorating the history and culture of triumph over oppression — Page 6 RICHARDS CENTER FOR THE ARTS HELPS CELEBRATE 60 YEARS OF LOCAL HISTORY
In 1958 the Palm Springs Unified School District built and dedicated its high school auditorium. For that day and age it was one of the finest venues in the desert and remained so for many years. In addition to being used daily for school programs and events it quickly became the pre-
ferred site for many valley presenters. Last year the venerable site underwent an extensive renovation and now celebrates its 60th anniversary completely rebuilt and rededicated. Due to a generous two million dollar grant from Rozene Supple, the excellent new auditorium is now called the “Richards Center for the Arts” to honor Mrs. Supple’s family name. The endowment will enhance Ric and Rozene Supple’s Palm Springs Cultural Center’s work for local students to pursue their interest in film, performing and visual arts. PS Concerts is just one of the local groups that returned enthusiastically to the refurbished venue. Ironi-

cally they were founded during the auditorium’s first year of operation and now celebrate their 60th Anniversary as well. The renovation efforts began with seismic improvements to the structural foundation. Because the exterior walls were historic, substantial additions to the ancient footings were added 20 feet below ground. During the reconstruction the roof was completely removed, as well as all the old seating and the entire concrete flooring. All new plumbing and electrical systems were designed and installed. The old wall coverings were also removed and replaced with firerated materials that look similar to
the originals. Diffused panels on the new house ceiling have state-of-theart sound capabilities and acoustics. All new comfortable seating has been installed, similar to the old seating in color and style but slightly more spacious and comfortable. Upgrades have been made to the projection room with new modern performance technology and computer-controlled stage equipment and sound systems. Thanks to the Palm Springs Unified School District and the generosity of the Supples, the new Richards Center for the Arts promises to be among the finest venues for performing artists and their appreciative local audiences far into the future.
