Living On The Edge
November 2020
Club Manager Message Dear Ocean Edge Club Members, Now that we are in mist of November, historically the Club had begun to slow down, but this year is unlike any other. Golf, tennis and pickleball will remain open and available for as long as the weather and conditions permit. Thus far, each venue has been vibrant with activity and we hope to see this continue throughout the balance of the year. Fitness classes will continue with both at-home Zoom options as well as some limited in-person class offerings, such as aqua-fit. Additional activities have been scheduled with our Director of Fun and Entertainment, Jessie Getlik, for the whole family to enjoy. The complete activities schedule can be found on-line at the member website, as well as within this newsletter. Our objective is to keep our Members engaged and enjoying the Club for all year. Looking ahead for 2021, there still remains a lot of uncertainty with respect to COVID. As we are planning on the future, we look for a year ahead where the “new norm is adopted where Club operations, social events and activities can be experienced in a safe and comfortable environment. There will be a lot more to come over the coming weeks and months as we move through the process and learn more about the guidelines and directives that will be put in place. On the staffing front, we are currently very active in the process of identifying the new Director of Golf for Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club. Over the past few weeks we have received many very qualified applicant’s from both inside and outside of the Troon network. It is the expectation that over the next two weeks, the top candidates will be identified to then schedule for in-person interviews and meetings at Ocean Edge. I want to thank the many members who have brought forth candidates and recommendations to the Club. It is a very beneficial part of the process and is greatly appreciated. It is also with great sadness that we also have to start the search for the replacement of Emma Haselton, Member Relations and Communications Manager. Emma has been provided a growth opportunity as the Marketing Director at a Cape Cod firm in the building & construction industry. It is a wonderful opportunity for Emma in terms of career growth and truly a position that fits her talents and passion in Marketing. I have enjoyed working with Emma over the past year and do wish her all the best for the future.
Club Manager Message As we enter the holiday season, I would like to extend my sincere best wishes for you and your families to have a very safe and healthy holiday. For many families it may be difficult to spend time together due to the level of travel restrictions that are in place, but I hope that you each have the opportunity to celebrate what matters most with your families as some point over the holidays. This year, Thanksgiving Dinner at the Club has been designed for you to have a personal family experience. If you have not made your reservation but are planning on Thanksgiving dining at the Club, please contact Ocean Terrace at 774-323-6013 at your earliest convenience. Thank you again for all your support and appreciation of the Club over this past season. This year has seen some record Member participation in golf, tennis, fitness and overall utilization of the Club amenities. You being members of the Club is greatly appreciated and we look forward to extending the season and activities throughout the year and into 2021! Thank you for being a valued member of our Club and I wish you and your family have a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving Holiday!
Sincerely, Michael Medeiros Club Manager
Member Relations & Communications As the Club continues to transition into the fall, it is fair to say we all have adapted a bit more to present Covid-life. For a season that started out fast and unknown, I am proud to say the strong team I am part of did our absolute best to get creative and make the experience at Ocean Edge as memorable as possible. There were a few trying times as the state altered regulations and limitations, but by working together we were able to successfully have a great season. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Ocean Edge and the wonderful opportunity I was given to join the Club team at the start of this year. In a short amount of time, I have been able to grow my skill set and spread my wings farther than I expected. I have shared many laughs, ongoing jokes, and stories with the tight knit group of Members who frequented the clubhouse over the last few months. Aside from relationships I have developed, I am proud of the strides I made on the communications side. I embraced the resources I was given, and with each passing week notable improvements were made. With that being said, it is bittersweetly that I share that I will be leaving Ocean Edge at the end of this week. I have been given a wonderful opportunity to further grow my career path and return to my marketing roots as a marketing director for a local business. I am excited to get back into the world of marketing, which is where I originally discovered my professional passions. I am sad to say goodbye to the Members who I developed relationships with, and the Membership as a whole, but I know there is someone out there who will fill this role perfectly after I leave. I extend great appreciation to everyone who welcomed me to the Club with open arms. This experience will be something I remember for a very long time. Saturday will be my last day, so please stop by the front desk at Linx for one final time prior to my departure. Now, to end on a lighter note, please write down your logins and passwords! I want everyone to be able to stay up to date on the Club website. Sincerely, Emma Haselton Member Relations & Communications Manager
Advisory Board News We certainly have experienced a beautiful fall season at Ocean Edge. This is especially good news as a number of members who normally head to warmer weather this time of year are now able to experience fall on Cape Cod. I want to thank our Membership for the terrific support shown by the vast majority of Members during this very unusual and difficult Covid year of 2020. As you may know, the number of golf rounds played on our course far exceeded any year in the past and most rounds are Member rounds. Our course was in pristine shape this year thanks to Craig Sullivan and our top notch agronomy team and to the Members who give our course a little TLC every time they play. Our beautiful beach and beach bar also saw terrific traffic, and all enjoyed the beach, the activities offered, and the food and beverage service and product. The process of presetting the beach chairs was also a smash hit and was well received by all.The outdoor pools also were well utilized under restricted protocols, but were also very successful for Members and guests. The restrictions on Member Sports Club classes and the exercise room were difficult but of course necessary. Heidi and her team worked tirelessly creating new venues for exercise, including a very successful ZOOM schedule, lots of outdoor Yoga, and some additional outdoor classes. One of the great new additions to our Club and Resort this year has been the amazing success of our 6 new Pickleball courts. Well over 1200 matches were played this year as Pickleball continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in America. Another terrific addition to our Resort and Club was the increased activities and offerings on the Front Lawn. This beautiful setting was enjoyed by great crowds and will be another “Crown Jewel for Ocean Edge. A special shout out to Emma Haselton and Jessie Getlik, both of whom have been very special additions to our management team. In doing so they both added great new activities and fun, terrific communication improvements, and in turn received well deserved Member and guest appreciation. In closing, I would like to ask that anyone interested in joining the Member Advisory Board go to our Member website and fill out the Application for the Advisory Board. I think you would find being a Board Member to be a very satisfying and productive experience. Once again, my sincere thanks to our Membership for the great support to our Club and our Resort during a very difficult year. Sincerely, Craig Mance Advisory Board Chair
Agronomy News The sign of aeration usually tells us the golf season is approaching its end. Greens, approaches, and rough have been aerified. Monday 10/19 and Tuesday 10/20, we tackled the front nine greens. We had great weather to complete the front nine greens. Wednesday 10/21 and Thursday 10/22, we moved to the back nine greens. The weather was not as favorable as it was on the front nine. The foggy and heavy dew on the turf makes the process a little more time consuming and not as clean. Our process for greens aeration is very in depth. We first verticut the greens with a machine that uses vertical blades to remove thatch and thin out the dense turf canopy. We followed that with a triplex mow to have a clean surface. We then pull a 3/8 hollow tine core. The cores are shoveled off the greens surface into carts. The surface was then blown clear of debris in preparation of the topdressing sand. Next, 1.5mm screened topdressing sand was then heavily applied to the greens surface. We let the sand sit on the surfaces and dry for a few hours. Once we felt the sand was dried enough, we then took our Greens Groomer brush and brushed the sand into the open holes. The brushing process is done in two different directions on the green to help incorporate as much sand into the profile as possible. Once the brushing was complete, we once again blew any debris left behind as well as moved any excess sand into open aeration holes. We then rolled the green multiple times to help firm and smooth out the surface. All 18 holes of rough have been aerified. We use a drum style aerator to pull our cores. We then allow the cores to dry out before we use a metal drag mat to break soil off the plug. Dragging the plugs allows us to return the soil from the plugs back into the profile and leaves the thatch part of the plug on top of the surface to be chopped up with our rough mowers. This leaves us with fairways as our last area in need of aeration. Weather dependent we are planning on completing this task over the next several weeks. Hope to see everyone out enjoying the golf course before the colder weather eventually moves in.
Sincerely, Craig Sullivan Golf Course Superintendent

Fitness News The fall is here! There is nothing better in this weather than a nice warm bowl of soup. However, some soups are too high in calories or fat content. This recipe is one of my favorites. It has all the flavor but you can still fit in your pants! Add some extra diced carrots or even some cayenne pepper to spice or sweeten it up. Enjoy! SKINNY SLOW COOKER POTATO SOUP This loaded potato soup is made entirely in the slow cooker and tastes just like a loaded baked potato, yet is lightened up! 6 - 8 slices cooked turkey bacon, diced 2 lbs Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/2 inch pieces 1 yellow onion, peeled and diced 4 cups reduced sodium chicken stock 12 oz can low fat evaporated milk 2 Tbsp cornstarch 4 oz reduced fat cream cheese, softened 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1 tsp kosher salt 1/2 tsp black pepper pinch ground celery seed sliced green onions or chives, additional shredded cheese, additional bacon for garnish 1. To a 4 quart or larger slow cooker, add bacon, potatoes, onion and chicken stock and stir to combine. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours, or HIGH for 3-4 hours, until potatoes are very tender. 2.Combine evaporated milk and cornstarch, whisking to combine until no lumps remain. The last 30 minutes of cooking, add cream cheese, cornstarch/milk mixture, shredded cheddar, salt, pepper and celery seed. Stir to combine, cover and continue cooking 30 minutes. 3.Remove lid and mash about half of the potatoes with a potato masher to thicken the soup up even more. 4.Serve garnished with any of the toppings. Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Sincerely, Heidi VanAmburgh Member Sports Club Manager

activities News October was a nice month for the Activities/Entertainment team as we began to introduce new ideas and work hard towards defining the program here at Ocean Edge. It was nice to meet many of you on various weekends for our popular pumpkin carving activity and even see some of you at Fletcher pool for various trivias. The November activities grid brings some new crafts such as non-instructional wine glass painting and the NEW Bear Factory starting Thanksgiving weekend. We are looking to add more enrichment workshops/activities during the months of November and December. Our first one to be offered is the NEW Framed Glass Art Creations workshop on Saturday, November 7th. This unique art project is a fun way to let the creative juices flow, as well as a good, safe way to meet others in a clean, socially distanced environment. Be sure to sign up as spaces are limited for this ONE TIME offering. As always, if you have any questions please email me & I’d be happy to assist. Stay safe & Happy Thanksgiving! Let’s have fun!
