AGRONOMY

As we move through the heart of winter, I wanted to share an update on what the Agronomy Team has been focused on and explain some of the important practices taking place behind the scenes to protect the golf course during the colder months
Winter Work & Course Preparation
Periods of limited access to the golf course whether due to weather conditions or snow events allow our team to concentrate on projects that often take a back seat during the playing season.

Over the past several weeks, we have been refurbishing and maintaining many course accessories to ensure everything is ready for spring.
This includes:
Painting tee markers and traffic posts
Refurbishing ball washers - Cleaning and painting cups
Repairing and repainting bunker rakes
Planning and staging traffic pegs for early-season protection
Completing this work now allows us to enter the spring with these details already addressed, so our focus can shift entirely to turf conditions and playability as the season ramps up
The Benefits of Snow Cover
While snowstorms can be inconvenient, consistent snow cover can actually be beneficial to turfgrass during winter. Snow acts as an insulating blanket, helping to moderate soil temperatures and protect turf crowns from extreme cold It also reduces exposure to drying winter winds, which can desiccate turf and weaken plants
However, not all winter weather is created equal. Freeze–thaw cycles especially when snow melts during the day and refreezes at night can create a condition known as crown hydration. This occurs when water enters the turf crown during a thaw and then freezes, expanding and damaging the plant tissue Crown hydration is one of the primary causes of winter injury on golf greens in New England
AGRONOMY

Why We Topdressed in Mid-January
During the week of the 12th, we took advantage of favorable conditions to topdress our greens, approaches, and tees In total, approximately 28 tons of sand were applied
This sand layer serves several important purposes:
Insulates turf crowns from temperature fluctuations
Improves surface drainage during winter thaws
Provides physical protection through the remainder of winter
This proactive step significantly reduces the risk of winter injury and positions the turf for a healthier transition into spring
Looking Ahead
Winter maintenance plays a critical role in the quality of the course you experience during the season While much of this work happens quietly, it lays the foundation for strong turf health and improved playing conditions once temperatures begin to rise Our team is also performing thorough equipment maintenance to ensure reliable operation in the spring

AIR FRYER LUMPIA
In honor of the Patriots being in the Superbowl, I found this recipe that is not only heart healthy (recommended by the American Heart Association) but also delicious and perfect for snacking during the big game Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon olive oil (extra virgin preferred)
1/2 pound extra-lean ground pork
1/2 pound extra-lean ground beef
3 garlic cloves (minced)
1 1-inch piece grated peeled gingerroot
3/4 cup finely minced onion
3/4 cup finely minced carrot
3/4 cup thinly sliced green cabbage
1/2 cup finely minced water chestnuts
2 medium green onion (minced)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil and 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil, divided use
1 tablespoon soy sauce (lowest sodium available)
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
20 6- to 8-inch lumpia, spring roll, or egg roll wrappers
1/3 cup sweet chili sauce (lowest sodium and added sugars available)
R
DIRECTIONS
In a nonstick skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat, swirling to coat the bottom. Cook the pork and beef for 5 to 7 minutes, or until no longer pink, stirring occasionally to turn and break up the pork and beef. Add the garlic and gingerroot. Cook for 30 seconds, or until fragrant. To make the filling: Stir in the onion, carrot, cabbage, water chestnuts, green onions, and 1 tablespoon sesame oil. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the soy sauce, pepper, garlic powder, and remaining 1 tablespoon sesame oil.
Remove from the heat Let stand for 10 minutes, or until cool enough to handle.
Meanwhile, if using an air fryer basket, preheat the air fryer to 360°F. If using a toaster-style air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 350°F.
Place a wrapper on a clean work surface with one corner pointing toward you. Spoon 2 1/2 tablespoons of the filling at the bottom of the wrapper, leaving about 1 1/2 inches of space from the bottom point. Fold the bottom and sides over the filling, meeting the top point Fold in the two side points, meeting in the middle and slightly overlapping to create an envelope shape. Roll the wrapper tightly toward the top point until there is about 1 inch of wrapper remaining. With clean fingers, moisten the remaining 1 inch of wrapper with water Roll to seal the edge.
Transfer to a platter or large plate with the seam side down. Cover with plastic wrap. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling. Arrange the rolls in a single layer in the air fryer basket or air fryer rack. (Don’t overcrowd; work in batches as needed.) If using a basket-style air fryer, cook for 12 minutes, or until golden brown. If using a toasterstyle air fryer, cook for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown Serve with the chili sauce.
