PLAYING FOR IT ALL IN VEGAS YOUNG BILLIARD PLAYERS WILL COMPETE IN THE BEF JUNIOR NATIONALS DURING THE BCA EXPO By Anthony Stoeckert In recent years, the Billiard Congress of America has taken steps to help its annual Expo grow in its mission as an event that brings people from the industry together, and serves as a resource for the latest billiards news and products.
And now part of the Expo is looking to the future, as for the second year in a row, the BCA is teaming up with the Billiard Education Foundation in presenting the 27th Annual Junior National 9-Ball Championships, Aug. 4-7.
That initiative began in 2012, as the economy was struggling, Samm Diep-Vidal, executive director of the Billiard and Rob Johnson, the BCA’s chief executive officer, says that was Education Foundation, says the partnership is fitting because actually an opportunity to look at the Expo’s mission and future. the tournament actually began at the Expo. “One of the determinations that was made was that this is the one time of the year that the whole industry comes together as one,” Johnson says. “There are no other billiard-type shows that resemble this event.”
“It’s really kind of cool that we’re back with the trade show, because that’s where this event started,” she says. “It started at the trade show, the kids playing alongside the vendors on different tables, whatever sponsored vendor tables were available. It’s nice that we’ve come full circle and come back to the trade show.”
That realization influenced such decisions as where to hold the Expo, arranging events where people from all facets of the industry can socialize, and inviting instructors to set up a booth where they For Johnson, bringing the Nationals to the Expo is a perfect offer lessons and demonstrations and meet with retailers. fit, and continues the efforts by the BCA to improve the Expo. 6 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015

“One of the steps we decided to add last year was the youth in play,” he says. “We wanted to create an environment on the floor with play, and we thought youth was the perfect group to team up with because they’re the future of the game. We wanted the industry to see these kids, and to energize the industry with the kids that are playing.”
GIVING KIDS A CHANCE TO SHINE The tournament will bring in young players from throughout the United States to compete for scholarships and prizes. Kids competing in the tournament also are playing for a spot at the World Pool-Billiard Association’s World Junior 9-Ball Championships, making it the only competition in the country that can lead to a spot in that international tournament. The tournament will feature young billiard players competing in four divisions: 18 and under boys; 18 and under girls; 14 and under boys; and 14 and under girls. “We are anticipating our largest field size in the history of the event,” Diep-Vidal says. “We are maxing out both of the boys divisions at 64 players each, and then the two girls divisions at 32 players each.” That will bring about 200 kids to the events, with the youngest player being around 6. “They have been participating in qualifiers and state championships throughout the year to qualify for this event,” Diep-Vidal says. “This year, we had 40 state championships, which was pretty extensive. It’s just been a record year for everything with us. We’re excited to share it with the BCA.”
WORKING TOGETHER Teaming up the Nationals and the Expo is a win-win for both organizations, according to Johnson. The Billiard Education Foundation gets a location, provided by BCA, saving the Foundation money. “It also presents them and their kids in front of the industry,” Johnson says. “And so as they look to raise money for events, as the kids look for sponsorships for events, we’ve exposed them to the industry.” He adds that the Expo and the industry also benefit. “As the tournament grows, there’s a ripple effect that can help build the industry as a whole,” Johnson says, adding that last year, 10 pool rooms hosted qualifying events for the Junior Nationals, and the rest of the field was filled by kids who were 8 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015
invited to compete. He says that this year, more than 35 pool rooms hosted qualifiers, and the Junior Nationals are sold out. “It’s a big deal,” he says. “This year, we’ve doubled the number of kids who will be playing on the show floor; we’re full.” The hope, he adds, is that the people who run those pool rooms will come to the Expo to support the kids who qualified at their businesses. “Then that exposes them to what’s going on in the industry and they may see some new technology or they may create a new relationship or rekindle an old relationship,” Johnson says. “The whole thing goes back to bringing the industry together.”
THE FUTURE OF THE GAME In order for a sport to have a future, it needs to have young people playing, and the Junior Nationals are an indication that billiards is a sport with a future. And the relationship between BCA and the BEF helped make people in the business aware of that. “What was really neat about this tournament on our show floor was that people who are in the industry that know the game went over and watched these kids, and it was like, ‘Wow,’” Johnson says. “These kids are really good players, and because of that, all of a sudden, these companies on the floor are starting to work with these kids. They’re providing them product, and they’re starting to sponsor them, and they’re helping them compete internationally and making sure they can get to these different events. I think it was very surprising for the people to see these kids playing on the floor.” The fact that this year’s Nationals will see its biggest field is impressive, considering that kids have so many distractions, including their gadgets, to dedicate their time to. That just might represent a growing interest in the sport. “You probably see a parallel with the consumer side of the industry as well,” Diep-Vidal says. “With the economy picking up, it means that sales are picking up, it means there’s more disposable income in general. If parents are able to go out and play a little more pool, maybe they take their kids with them. It’s hard to pinpoint one thing that equates to us having our largest field ever, but we’re grateful for it.”
Johnson says holding the tournament at the Expo led to the kids being heroes of the trade show in that attendees saw them on the floor and stopped to talk with them and encourage them.
POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH With the big step the Junior Nationals are taking this year, Johnson says the timing is right for future growth. He notes that pool is a sport that requires discretionary income for the purchase of a table and other supplies, or to go to a pool room to play. The combination of the bad economy and the fascination with electronic devices meant that for many families, discretionary income went to smart phones, tablets and large-screen TVs. “I think we’re now getting to the point where people are saying, ‘OK, I’ve done that, and I’ve always wanted that pool table,’” Johnson says. In other words, he’s hopeful that some of the money that’s been spent on electronics will start going to other interests, including pool. That, he says, could lead to more preliminary tournaments leading up to the Junior Nationals. His perfect world would involve, as an example, 10 pool rooms in Colorado hosting tournaments, leading to a state final, which would send a player to the Nationals. “Five, 10 years down the road, that’s what I want to see happen,” Johnson says. “So that by the time you get to the BCA Expo, you’ve played two, three or four tournaments to get there. Just in one year to see it double and to see the growth in the rooms, I don’t think that’s unrealistic. It doesn’t have to happen overnight, it’s slow growth.” Johnson says teaming up the Nationals with the Expo has been a great success. One special moment for him came as he watched Jim Lucas, the founder of Cue & Case, taking in the tournament. “On the day of the finals he was watching the kids play,” Johnson says. “And it was so neat to see what a fan he truly was and to see how excited he was for the kids.”

INSIDE THE INAUGURAL ATLANTIC CHALLENGE CUP By Keith Loria
DAY 1 In the opening match of the tournament, both teams had all six players involved playing one rack each in a race to six, and Europe came out ahead, 6-3, thanks to two victories a piece by Tangudd and Fefilava.
Team Europe and Team USA are ready to battle.
Rankweil, Austria was the home for the Inaugural Atlantic Challenge Cup, July 1-4, as junior players from the U.S. and Europe represented the Billiard Congress of America and the European Pocket Billiard Federation, respectively, in a Mosconi Cup-style competition. “This event is not only good for the BCA but pool as a whole in America,” says Skip Nemecek, president of Tweeten Fibre Co. Inc., and a member of the Board of Directors for the WPA and BBIA, who helped conceive the event. “One of the objectives of the BCA is to promote and grow the sport of pool; what better way to grow the sport than from the junior pool players and future junior pool players of America?” After some fierce battles and brilliant pool gamesmanship, Team Europe was the victor, finishing the tournament at 11-9. “The Atlantic Challenge Cup was a memorable event full of fun and excite12 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015
ment, just the way pool is supposed to be played,” says David Morris, EPBF’s president. “We had passion, emotions, and so much excitement that I am sure this event will be a fixture on the calendar for many years to come.” Team U.S.A. consisted of Tyler Brandom, Nick Evans, Joshua Franklin, Drake Niepoetter, Taylor Hansen and April Larson; while the European Team consisted of Kristina Tkach, Daniel Tangudd, Patryk Statkiewicz, Marharyta Fefilava, Raphael Wahl and Maxim Dudanets. “These are such great kids with lots of passion, talent and experience,” says Earl Munson, Billiard Education Foundation Junior National tournament director and the captain for the U.S. squad. “I feel this advances the game by exposing more kids to the sport, the ability for instructors and referee programs to expand, and the inclusion of pool retailers and room operators to help cultivate the next generation of player and consumer.”
Team USA won the second match of the day, as the team of Evans, Niepoetter and Hansen defeated the Europeans in a team-of-three race to six. The final contest of the day was all square at 3-3 before Team Europe won the next three games behind victories from Dudanets, Tangudd and Fefilava.
DAY 2 Team Europe again had a big day, winning two double matches in the morning to take a 4-1 lead overall. Evans led off the evening matches with a victory over Statkiewicz, while Larson defeated Fefilava, restoring some pride in Team USA. Overall, Team Europe ended the day leading 5-3.
DAY 3 AND DAY 4 Team USA quickly fell behind in the tournament 8-3, but Franklin came on for a strong victory and then teamed with Larson for a double’s win. Evans and Niepoetter next won a doubles
competition of their own, and it ended the day trailing just 9-6.
Everyone, however, were winners in this incredible first-time event.
Knowing they needed to win five of the six single matches scheduled for the final day, the American team had its work cut out for it. Things started strong with Hansen defeating Tkach 6-3, but then Evans lost a thrilling battle to Tangudd and Team USA was down 10-7 with just four matches to go.
Next year, the Atlantic Challenge Cup will be played on American soil.
But Team USA was not going to give up so easily. Niepoetter defeated Statkiewicz, followed by another Larson victory over Fefilava, and suddenly it was 10-9.
“The youth have so much to offer this sport and the reward is there for everyone to see, I am one of the lucky ones to have witnessed the rise of a new generation of stars and I am already looking forward to next year,” Morris says.
Atlantic Challenge Cup Rankweil, Austria July 1–4, 2015
Europe sent Dudanets, its youngest member, to take on to the hot-shooting Franklin, and he scored the victory for Team Europe with a decisive 6-1 victory. When it was all over, Larson picked up the MVP award for team USA, while Tangudd took the award forTeam Europe.
Thank You Team USA Partners!

STAYING SOCIAL AT THE EXPO By Kathryn M. D’Imperio BCA members can take full advantage of this year’s BCA Expo by connecting and broadcasting on social media as well as socializing in person at the show. Anyone attending or exhibiting can get the most out of the experience with the below tips from social media professionals specializing in live event social coverage.
START THE CONVERSATION EARLY It helps to generate buzz before that moment when you really need it. Keep your social channels fresh and active all summer, especially in the days and weeks leading up to the Expo. Think of it like movie trailers and how they generate interest before the pictures even make it to the big screen. “Tradeshow attendees will be active on social media several weeks before the actual event,” says Ren A. Bloom of Mercury 360, a San Francisco-based social media agency that works with B2B clients active at trade shows and events. “Monitor the conversation on social media to learn who is going and hot topics that are trending. Then participate in the conversation where you can, and connect with attendees in your target audience to set up onsite visits.”
USE AND FOLLOW HASHTAGS What once seemed purely trendy and even a bit excessive to some is now an essential cornerstone of social media. Don’t miss out on all the increased exposure you can gain by simply using and creating appropriate hashtags. “Being socially active is the name of the game,” says Sarah Johnson, director of social media for RDW Group. “If there is a branded hashtag for the event, always use it. Encourage employees with (professionally appropriate) Twitter accounts to tweet about their experiences at the event using the hashtag and mentioning your brand’s handle when possible. Provide insights, opinions, and ideas that demonstrate your brand’s thought leadership.” 18 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015
Additionally, retweet relevant content from users who also included the branded hashtag from the event, and reply to their questions or comments. Doing this helps create meaningful connections, and builds relationships and trust with your brand/brand representatives.
SAY IT WITH IMAGES Try not to fill your entire social pages with blocks of text. Mix things up with photos, links to relevant news, and especially videos. “Photos and images are great ways to gain attention,” says Randy Walker, managing partner for New Chapter Media and author of the ebook How I Created $100,000 In One Year Using Social Media. “Take photos of yourself attending an Expo or event and caption the photo with something like ‘I’m representing (XYZ company name you own, run, work for) at the BCA Expo.’ Perhaps even ‘brand’ your photo by wearing clothing with your company’s logo or taking photos of your actual product in hand at the Expo.”
TAG OTHERS FOR BETTER CONNECTIONS “When you are complimentary about another brand or event and you tag them, the brand is very likely to share your post with their audience as you are giving them an endorsement,” says Walker. “Therefore, your brand is exposed to their network of followers. Compliment media on good articles about your niche, or compliment famous people in your niche about their work or projects and invite them to share your post, retweet, etc.” Donna Cravotta, social visibility expert and the CEO of Social Sage PR, suggests creating Twitter lists and Facebook groups for the event speakers and sponsors. This makes it easier and more convenient for you and other folks at the Expo to share and connect with each other.
CONSIDER CONTESTS AND PROMOTIONS You can engage your target audience with a special contest or promotion tying in with your social media regardless of whether or not you are actually attending the Expo. Consider giving away branded merchandise to those who visit your booth by way of the promotion with a secret password or hashtag. Create custom hashtags so you can easily track and monitor the contest, also encouraging participants to @mention your social media handle and retweet things you’ve posted as appropriate. “Create social media contests or host a giveaway that drives attendees to your exhibit/booth and your social media properties,” says Sarah Johnson, of RDW Group. “This is a great way to get everyone at the event talking about you. The important thing to remember is to make the offer easy to participate in, and still bring value to your attendance there. You don’t want to make connections/gain followers for the sake of doing so.Your goal should be to cultivate a targeted, engaged following who sees value in connecting with you outside of simply winning a prize at an event.”
PARTICIPATE, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T ATTENDING It isn’t always possible to attend every tradeshow and Expo, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved. Let your voice be heard as you connect with other brands, consumers, and the show’s producers. “Even if you are not attending an event, you can interact with the conversations around a hashtag, and many events are livestreamed now, so there is the opportunity to attend all or a portion of an
event virtually,” says Donna Cravotta, Social Sage PR. “I do not recommend using this as a space to push your services and products; rather use it as an opportunity to meet new people, build relationships, and show your expertise by offering great commentary and solutions to questions and issues. It is a great way to introduce yourself to a targeted and focused audience.”
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE Targeted social media efforts can make a big difference in how your brand is found and perceived by consumers, other companies, and prospective business partners. Your brand’s overall reputation depends on the sum of all your online efforts, not to mention your company’s in-person and customer service interactions, product offerings and quality, and traditional marketing plan. “Above all, your website is your No. 1 selling tool — all social media accounts, paid social, and SEO are leveraged in order to drive people to your website,” says Dee Dee Edmondson, senior account executive, RDW Group. “Make sure that you have an intuitive and integrated website before launching your social media campaigns — make sure it can be seen on mobile, iPads, tablets, and a traditional PC. The worst thing is to have a website that is only good for PC and is hard to access on a smart phone. Smart phones are the No. 1 way people see websites these days, and the numbers are growing.” To follow all that’s happening at the event, be sure to check out the official Facebook page of the BCA Expo at:

EVERYTHING BUT THE TABLE AS TIMES CHANGE, SO HAS THE NAME OF FRANK’S CENTER, BUT THE PRINCIPLES THAT BUILT THE COMPANY REMAIN By Anthony Stoeckert A lot has changed for FCI Billiards since it started in 1997, starting with its name. Back then, the company went by Frank’s Center, and it began with the owners selling pool cues out of a van at regional pool tournaments in the Midwest. “It was more of a hobby at that time, so the tournaments that we attended were very small, usually located in a pool hall,” says Dan Pinta, operations manager for the Nevada, Montanabased FCI Billiards. “As time went on, sales increased, we started carrying more and more products, and traveling to the national tournaments.” The business was continuing to grow when, in 2003, the owners made a deal with Instroke Custom Cue Cases to become the primary importer and repair center for their cases. It was shortly after that when the company became part of the scene at the BCA Expo. “The next year was the first year we were exhibitors at the BCA Expo to get the word out that we are the
only distributor that carries the full line of Instroke Cases,” Pinta says. “We then were able to start building our wholesale business, and growing customer accounts. To date, we are primarily wholesale, and only attend a handful of major shows over the course of the year. The shows that we now attend are Allen Hopkins Super Billiard Expo, BCAPL Nationals, and APA National Team Championships.”
A MOVE FOR THE FUTURE Another change came about in 2013 when former owner Frank Briscoe sold his share of the business to his wife, Vickie, so that he could retire. Under Vickie Briscoe’s leadership, the company has shown continuous growth. “We have been transitioning slowly from Frank’s Center, Inc., to FCI Billiards over the course of the last year, and will be assuming that name fully by the end of this year,” Pinta says.
Amid all the changes, one thing about FCI Billiards hasn’t changed — its mission to sell the best billiard supplies available at a fair price. “We sell everything for billiards except for the table to play on,” Pinta says. “We do sell a few tables locally, but it is not a primary focus of ours. For cues, we sell Predator, Lucasi,Viking, Poison, Outlaw, Voodoo, and many more. Instroke cases are our primary focus for cases, although we do have a more affordable line of cases that we have made, as well as a plethora of accessories from cue holders to tip prep tools.” The products FCI sells include cues, sells shafts, cases, chalk holders, pewter chalk holders, chalk, accessories, balls, books, videos, cue holders, training aides, tips and more. Some of FCI’s featured products are the Predator BK3 Leather Wrap Break Cue; the Predator Sports Series 2x4 Yellow Case; the Q-Claw 5 Green; the Q-Claw 2 Purple; the Predator Vantage Uniloc with Silver Wring; the Viking BCAINSIDER.COM | 37
A486; the Valhalla VAL 945 and 942; the Instroke Saddle 2x4 Model E; and the Players HXTE10.
A SHOOTING STAR Adding to the business’ star power is its relationship with Jeanette Lee, the Black Widow. FCI Billiards offers a line of Lee’s Black Widow cues, offering chopper- and supercar-inspired designs, and crafted with materials such as Syntek Fiber and Uni-Loc technology. The Poison BW-1 and BW-2 feature a metallic spider and acid-etched and hand-painted hour-glass color and butt caps. They are paired with Poison’s Venom2 low-deflection shaft. FCI also sells autographed “Black Widow” cue balls and 8 balls. “We started out working with Jeanette on designing and producing her logoed pool balls, and signature baby cue,” Pinta says. “We now help to store and distribute her merchandise for shows that she will be attending and sales on her website. She helps to promote us when we are at similar events and will also come to our booths to do signings to drive traffic to us.”
GROWING WITH THE TIMES FCI Billiards’ business philosophy has evolved over the years, as the scope of its products and services has grown. “In the beginning, we were more focused on the micro aspects of billiards when we were only dealing with small regional tournaments,” Pinta says. “Since then, we have moved into more of a broad approach to the industry, dealing with the manufacturing, importing and website development.” As FCI’s building is located in a rural area, Pinta says most of its business is done online and at tournaments and 38 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015
shows. The company does have a small show room, but he says it caters to a small number of walk-in customers who are local. With interest in pool on the rise, more and more products are becoming available, and staying on top of business trends is key to FCI’s success, according to Pinta. “We do our best to stay informed on as many aspects about the industry, from current news, to the new products arriving on the market,” he says. “We also have good relationships with many of manufacturers, distributors and customers which definitely helps. We want to provide the best service possible and are working every day to improve ourselves in that area.”
STICKING TO PRINCIPLES While technology seems to change everything in the business world, Pinta says the best marketing innovations are based on long-standing principles. “I really feel that any marketing tool that we have used is derived in some way from another that was used in the past,” he says. “I guess that on a local level, in order to compete with the online market place, we have been paying the sales tax for customers that come in the shop. This way, the customer is able to come in the store and actually hold the product in their hand, make sure it’s what they truly want, and receive a better value than purchasing online at the same price.”
help them to find the exact product that is right for them.” One challenge is staying on top of new products, knowing what’s popular and changing out products. “Obviously, we get a good feel on a product’s strength by how many units we sell over a period of time,” Pinta says. “I really enjoy the feedback we receive on products from customers when we travel to the different parts of the country. This really is the best indicator for us on what is going to work for us. On the other hand, there are just some brands that are so well known and popular they tend to sell.” Meanwhile, the staff of six at BCI Billiards continues its mission of offering the best to its customers, and Pinta enjoys being part of a company that does the business the way it wants. “I enjoy being in an industry that is more unique than just the typical suit-and-tie, cubical job that a lot of people have,” he says. “I’m able to provide products to people that they are excited to own, not something that is a necessity. That can be a double-edged sword also, but it makes it a challenge. All billiard games are great games, and are something anyone can play and enjoy.”
More important than what happens at the showroom is what happens at trade shows, where FCI’s booth is always a big draw. “In our booths at trade shows, we carry the largest variety of products of any vendor,” Pinta says. “Our staff knows about the products and are able to inform the customers in a way that can

BCA SEMINAR PREVIEW By Joe Dyton
SECRETS TO MAXIMIZING RETAIL SUCCESS ON A BUDGET WITH W.I.S.E. Merry Wise, a former vice president of Wise Pools and president of Retrospective Publishing, will speak about how a retail business’ key to survival is the ability to adapt to changes in the marketplace and keep ahead of the future while also retaining the best values of the past. Attendees will get a better understanding of the value of combining timeless principles of service with future trends to constantly upgrade and succeed in the retail world. W.I.S.E. stands for Wisdom, Integrity, Service, Experience, and is the basic philosophy behind R.E.T.A.I.L. (Reacting, Educating, Telling, Amplify, Improve, Link), the specifics of the method. “I have managed to use my years of retail expertise to create this presentation from taking my philosophy of doing business that I think made us ‘successful survivors’ and putting it into a blueprint others can use to adapt for their individual situation to also successfully survive, and hopefully, thrive,” Wise says. “While today’s retail environment makes use of all kinds of techniques not available to us in our earlier years, like the Internet and social media, I think today’s customers still respond and even yearn for that personal, one-toone genuine concern and care.” Wise has worked in partnership with her husband, prominent pool designer and builder Charles Wise, for the last 40 years of the company’s 43-year history in the business. Her experience 42 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015
spans across the entire business, from service and maintenance to pool and spa sales and construction. “People should attend this seminar if they want to share my ideas as well as their own and their peers for some useful secrets to thrive and survive in the challenging retail marketplace we all must navigate,” Wise says.
POOL ROOM ROUNDTABLE— SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIES AND CANDID CONVERSATION Buffalo, N.Y.-based Classic Cue Billiards & Café owner Carl Galante will lead this round-table discussion that will focus on a number of topics including what it takes to be a successful pool room owner, current national trends in pool rooms, strategies for generating pool room revenue, maintaining the condition of room owners’ equipment, and using instruction to generate repeat customers. This open discussion will also touch on what does and doesn’t work in pool rooms. “I’m hoping fresh ideas come out of the discussion, and techniques that will help them become more profitable as room owners and just to keep an open mind about expanding into different areas and doing different things in the room,” Galante says. “We are in the entertainment business, and people want to be entertained. We can do it with pool tables, shuffleboards, leagues and different things like that. Hopefully they can come out of it with some important information.”
Everyone is encouraged to attend the discussion as Galante notes it will be a great opportunity to network and have an open discussion with room operators facing the same business decisions everyone faces. All topics are open for discussion. “Attendees are encouraged to bring all and any questions, concerns and comments to discuss with the group,” he says.
MAKING SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEABLE— GETTING STARTED, FINDING THE TIME & STAYING RELEVANT Tiffany Tosh, co-founder of The REFUGE Group and a managing partner of REFUGE Marketing will lead this seminar for anyone who’s interested in getting started with using social media or is already using it, but hasn’t got it quite down yet. Attendees will learn how to find their online voice, how to decide which outlets are best for their retail business, along with time management tips and tools. The discussion will also focus on what to look for if you decide to get outside help with social media or hire a social media manager. “Social media is fundamental for any retail business,” Tosh says. “These days people judge businesses based on their social media presence, and are actively talking about businesses on social media, whether that business is actively part of the conversation or not. Having a consistent presence on the social media profiles that make sense for your industry will increase exposure

for your brand and build a stronger connection with your customers. The digital word of mouth it provides will only increase over time.” Tosh won’t just be speaking as someone with vast social media experience, but as someone with industry knowledge, too. Of the 10 years she’s spent using social media professionally, Tosh has worked on social media in the billiard and home leisure industry for four of them. “Our team works every day to create engaging content and share it on the appropriate social media platform,” Tosh says. “What works on Facebook is different from what works on Twitter or Pinterest. I take all of that knowledge and bring it down to the basics of what would make a business in the billiard and home leisure industry successful.” The seminar will also help individuals develop their online personality and figure out which platforms work best for them and how to engage with their followers.
21 MARKETING ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TODAY TO SELL MORE TOMORROW Regardless of your business’ marketing budget, business model or size, Brian Offenberger offers 21 innovative and effective ways to help any billiard and

home leisure retailer generate more sales and higher profits. Whether you sell from a storefront, online or both, this high-impact session will show you how to sell more. “My session is relevant to every attendee at the show,” Offenberger says. “All businesses need sales to survive and thrive. No matter what the size, the business model or number of years in business, we all need sales. My seminar reveals practical ways to make more sales in an entertaining, thoughtprovoking manner.” Offenberger brings 30 years of helping small business owners and managers take action to increase sales to this seminar. His expertise comprises using Internet, social media and marketing to drive sales online, to call centers and to retail stores. His radio show about the best practices for online marketing was voted by marketing professionals as one of the world’s top sources for search marketing information. “My entire career has been spent helping companies make more sales,” Offenberger says. “I also have an extensive background in teaching others what works in marketing and advertising in the Internet era.” The main goal of this seminar is for attendees to discover practical ways to help grow their sales that they’re excited to implement right away. Offenberger also hopes attendees gain a renewed sense of excitement and

commitment to growing their sales in profitable ways.
5 THINGS YOUR CUSTOMERS CAN DO BETTER THAN YOU WHEN IT COMES TO SOCIAL MEDIA Lynn Switanowski, founder of Creative Business Consulting Group, notes that customers are using social media as a matter of course every day to improve, enhance and to make their purchase experience easier for everything they buy. “Increasingly, the best retailers in the market today use social media on a daily basis to market their products, sell their products, talk to customers, and make merchandising decisions,” she says. “If your store is not engaged daily with social media in these ways and if your sales are stagnating, now might be the perfect time to add selling to the list of things that your social media sites can do for your business.” In her seminar, she will share insights and information from the customers’ point of view that can help any retailer set up marketing messages and programs to reach them more effectively this year and beyond.

BCA EXPO WELCOMES BOTH OLD AND NEW FRIENDS By Keith Loria The Billiard & Home Leisure Expo brings together the industry’s most diverse, cutting-edge manufacturers, retailers, distributors, consumers, and other key players in the billiards and home leisure market. Attending the Expo is a great way to get your brand out there and to learn about other brands, products, and services in the marketplace. It’s also an effective way to make new connections and get the word out about your company and its offerings, not only to your existing customer base but to a wide world of new potential customers as well. This year’s Expo will feature exhibits ranging from billiards and darts, to Skee-Ball, game room furniture, accessories, and even spas and hot tubs. Numerous BCA members have attended the Expo for years, or even decades, growing their businesses, connections, and sales through their participation. 60 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015
“As a distributor, our customer contact is primarily through phone calls,” says Eric Weber, vice president of CueStix International (www.cuestixint.com). “The BCA Show has always been our best opportunity to put names to faces and meet our customers personally. It’s where our customers become our friends.” The 2015 Expo is the 24th year in a row for CueStix International. Weber says the company maintains its relationships the old-school way, with actual conversations, and these “friendships” have been the driving force behind the business for years. DIAMOND Billiard Products (www.diamondbilliards. com) has also attended the Expo for more than 20 years. DIAMOND’s goals for the Expo include creating and building relationships with dealers to expand their network, educating
dealers, consumers, and mechanics on products, and gathering feedback on the company’s offerings. DIAMOND typically has three to five pool tables on display at the BCA show, compared to one table at other Expos. “Social media is a great way to let the world know that your company will be present at the BCA Expo, and if you have any special plans for the event,” says Aaron Berger, sales representative with DIAMOND. “We will provide links to the event’s website and advertise our booth number. DIAMOND will usually post pictures from the event so people that follow DIAMOND can learn about the Expo and get a glimpse of what is in our booth if they do not attend.” Arash Amini, CEO of Amini’s Home, Rugs & Game Room, and the new Jaffe Lighting by Amini’s, says his favorite part of the Expo is visiting with old friends and making new connections. “I enjoy the collaboration as we will do our best to understand what is and isn’t working,” he says. “It’s all about connecting families, creating memories and celebrating life through quality products that enhance the elegance and experiences in the home.”
THE NEWBIES Every year, new exhibitors take advantage of what the BCA Expo has to offer and this year a variety of great companies are taking part. Cheryl Stern, owner of WorldWise Imports, Las Vegas, Nev., a wholesaler of games, poker supplies, casino accessories and more, will be exhibiting at the Expo with her sales team. “As longtime providers of traditional games such as chess, backgammon and cribbage we thought the BCA show might be a good place to reach out to those interested in expanding their product range,” she says. “We hope to encourage those who use billiard equipment and supplies to expand their inventory to include other game items as the industry evolves and changes. We have a couple of billiards store customers that do well with our items.”
models, fitness models and pools. We also have a complete line of spas.” At the show, Catalina will exhibit its most popular 14-foot Catalina Swim Spa model and one of its beautiful 7-foot premium spas. Pete Edmondson of Puma Darts, based in New Zealand, says the company decided the BCA Expo would be a great platform to launch its new Shot! darts products, designed for the U.S. market. “Our new dart equipment now caters for all segments of the market with the introduction of Shot! Start to our dart specialty premium ranges,” he says. “We also have just been appointed manufacturer and distributor of World Champion and current world No. 1 player Michael van Gerwen, and plan to use the BCA Expo to celebrate this.” Edmondson notes the company generated sales and leads, and has experienced good word of mouth through using the BCA Expo to launch new ranges. “The fact companies return year after year and increase and improve their presence is an endorsement of the Expo,” he says. “Also the interactive opportunities to engage visitors like the celebrity appearances, which we will embrace this year ourselves with our own USA and Canadian champion pro dart players.” Although darts is the company’s core specialty, it also distributes other indoor game products including table tennis and billiards, and expects the BCA Expo to provide it with a great opportunity to meet the experts in those fields to ensure its own products remain innovative and fresh in design. “Apart from connecting with many and promoting our new ranges, we really look forward to showcasing everything about our brand and engaging with many visitors and assisting where possible,” Edmondson says. “Also apart from the great
Carolyn Brazil, owner of Catalina Spas, Perris, Calif., says she decided to bring her products to the show because of the growing number of pool table dealers who also sell outside patio supplies. “We are hoping to expand our dealer base and reach a whole new market. We feel that this is a great way to get our product introduced to a new range of dealers and consumers,” she says. “We have a complete line of 30 different models ranging from 12-foot swim spas to 21-foot swim spas, in-ground

fun of BCA and seminars, which we will aim to attend to help with our own education, we also look forward to showcasing two of USA’s finest dart players over the days to give many an appreciation to the level of play at the professional level.” Monte Thayer, vice-president of sales for Andy Billiard Cloth, says the company is sharing a pool table with Mike Massey’s Sure Stroke, and that the BCA Hall of Famer will be demonstrating his product on the cloth of the shared table. Pro Rodney Morris will also be on hand to promote the cloth.
Barry Breibart of Flash Furniture, Canton, Ga., says the company’s exhibit will feature its new line of home theater furniture, bar stools and children’s recliners. “We hope to show people who sell billiards furniture that these products are a great complement to what they have and are readily accessible with low inventory needed,” he says. “We’re very excited about being at the Expo and making some strong connections.” Be sure to check out all the booths and enjoy all the Expo has to offer.
“We want people to understand how good this cloth is,” Thayer says. “Right now, a lot of people are reluctant to change because they are unsure how customers will react to new cloth, but we feel the Expo will help us get our name out there and show them the quality that our cloth offers.” Chris Beall sales manager for Arachnid360, Loves Park, Ill., says it will be introducing its commercial home-grade Galaxy 3 game. “It’s the same commercial unit you would see at the bars and taverns, less the coin, Internet and webcams, so it plays and feels like the same quality only it’s now for the home,” he says. “We have this unique product and there are a lot of high-end customers of the BCA and we feel this model will complement any game room or rec room.”

“I came up with the idea because people would be at my house playing pool and when they stepped away from the table they would lean their sticks against the wall and that would leave chalk marks or the cue would slip and fall and get damaged when it hit the ground,” he says. “This replaces the traditional wall stand and can slide across the floor so it can be placed anywhere in the room.”

Another brand-new product at the show will be the Sure Shot Billiard Balls, created by the team of Bill Herbert and Tom Repczynski. “It’s a training set intended to show and allow a novice player how to make a cut shot and get the ball into the pocket,” Herbert says. “There are 112 different spots on the ball, about a fifth of an inch in four different colors spread out uniformly over the ball. The goal of our project is to teach a player to run seven balls.” Sure Shot will have a seven-foot table from DIAMOND on display and will have the product available in sets of 2, 4, 6 and 8 (a cue ball and seven balls). 62 | BCA INSIDER • SUMMER 2015

Service Matters Just Ask Our Customers Dear CueStix. I’ve dealt with a lot of companies over the past 30 years and CueStix is by far one of the best. From my perspective, you don’t seem to have any of the corporate BS that goes on and your organizational structure is such that you are able to get things done and get them done quickly. The work ethic that they apparently promote and you all project is awesome. I always know that when I order you ship the same day. If I have trouble, you are quick to resolve my issue. You always have people on staff to personally help. Your company and the staff project a strong image of organization to me. This is just another example of what I’ve been experiencing with your company. I let you know something wasn’t right, you investigated and had it completely fixed within a day. You didn’t have to escalate it to anyone and were given the respect and authority to resolve it. In most companies, it is just too much trouble to resolve issues because it has to be escalated, approved and then resolved if it makes it that far. Keep up the good work and have a great day.
