I always find myself humbled and awed by the prospect of conveying the depth of gratitude I feel.The contributions that you—individually and as a collective group—offer to BB&N’s people and programs are truly stunning in their scope and their scale. Moreover, amazingly, your support as a whole somehow manages to grow that much more extraordinary every year. The 2013-2014 year was no exception. More than 2,000 donors and volunteers. A spectacular, recordsetting $2,855,779 donated to The BB&N Fund. And in especially noteworthy fashion this year, the ongoing philanthropic support (more than $4 million!) dedicated toward our plans for a transformative renovation to the Middle School, which continues the long-standing legacy of our community’s parents, alumni/ae, and other donors and supporters going phenomenally above and beyond to help shape the BB&N of today, tomorrow, and many tomorrows to come.

It takes resources to keep a school like BB&N humming, for sure. The pages that follow paint a compelling picture both of how those resources are obtained, but also how they are allocated. The newly renovated Middle School facility, once completed, will of course be a dramatic and quite tangible example of that “resource allocation” responsibility which the School’s leadership takes most seriously. And while less overt, other examples of how your contributions help create a better, deeper, more dynamic experience for BB&N students are legion.They range from subsidizing an incredible array of professional development opportunities for our faculty members on all three campuses, to initiating a special financial aid fund that enables families to meet various supplemental expenses in addition to tuition, to addressing more tightly focused needs such as a new stage curtain for the Upper School drama program and a new batting cage for the baseball team. These are the details both large and small upon which our School’s legacy of excellence is built, improved, and sustained—and they are details made eminently reachable thanks to your generous support. On behalf of the 1,007 students who learn, grow, strive, and laugh here every day, I can only say one more time, simply and meaningfully: thank you, all!

BB&N’s Mission Statement, adopted in 2012 along with a statement of Key Values, represents a set of guiding principles that are at the core of our educational purpose: for our students; the faculty, administrators, and coaches who guide them along their academic journey; and our alumni/ae who carry these values into the wider world they enter as graduates. In the pages that follow, we highlight several of BB&N’s Key Values that illustrate elements of the School’s motto—Honor Scholarship Kindness—and share a few of the many examples of how that motto is lived through our students, faculty, and alumni/ae. Continuing a long tradition of outstanding BB&N drama performances, this year’s Upper School production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew was no exception. Never ones to take the conventional route, theater director Mark Lindberg and his student actors put a modern twist on their performance with a cast including Andrew Schneider ’14 as Hortensio and Aaron Orbey ’14 as Petruccio. Aaron was recently recognized as a Presidential Scholar, a prestigious honor bestowed upon only three other students in the history of BB&N.



For more than 20 years, BB&N has honored alumni/ae who have excelled in a wide range of fields­ —from humanitarian causes and community service to journalism, science, and the arts—with its Distinguished Alumnus/a Award. A new tradition this year was the presentation of the award at Strawberry Night as part of Reunion Weekend to the 2014 recipient, Peter Beinart ’89, a renowned political journalist, editor, university professor, and author. Peter was especially honored to receive the award in front of 77 classmates and guests gathered for their 25th Reunion (a record number), and several of Peter’s former teachers whom he, in turn, honored in his remarks.

Noted Peter, “The thing I remember most vividly about BB&N are the teachers. Linda (Kaufman) taught me to love history, partly because she is such a tremendous educator and partly because she so clearly loved it herself. Then there was Rob Leith, who was the first in a long line of editors who have tried to impress upon me the difference between reporting the facts and offering my opinion. But in the process, he also kindled my love of

political writing, which is what I’ve spent the last two decades doing with my professional life. Finally, there was Lewis Bryant, who first gave me the confidence to believe that I could cross the boundaries that separated me from people I feared.

HONORING OUR ROLE AS GLOBAL CITIZENS

Sixth Graders’ social studies, English, and arts units— led by Leila Huff and Sharon Mathieu—intersected this spring as students explored the lives of women and children in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, illustrated through the book Homeless Bird about a teenage girl’s life and struggles in India. Bringing their study closer to home, students also debated the pros and cons of locating The Islamic Cultural Center close to the 9/11 Memorial Site in New York City. Underlying the unit was an important discussion about identity and the students’ roles as global citizens, national citizens, and BB&N citizens as either upstanders or bystanders. As concluding projects, students each created a quilt (like the heroine of Homeless Bird) to depict the book’s key themes, and an identity mask to express how they think others perceive them on the outside compared to how they see themselves on the inside.

At this year’s Sixth Grade Lunch, six students were selected by their classmates to speak about their Lower School memories and thank their teachers for their guidance and support. One of the student speakers shared this reflection on what Ms. Mathieu, and this unit, meant to her: “Ms. Mathieu depicts the attribute of honor. She taught us that we have a responsibility to do what’s right and make a difference in the world.... Not only did she teach us about history and the facts, but she taught us about life and who we are as people in society. Ms. M also taught us that we were never too young to make a change and that we should stand up for what we believe in. Ms. M told us to be our own person and not let society shape us to who they want us to be.” — Julia Noyes ’20

LEARNING ACROSS BORDERS

BUILDING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

In the Senior Spring Project mini-course “Deforestation in Haiti and the Dominican Republic,” co-taught by Upper School history teacher Gustavo Carrera and science teacher Karina Baum, BB&N seniors were given the opportunity to become global scholars by investigating and understanding the impact of global climate change and deforestation on the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic).

In the age of the Internet students can cross continents with the click of a mouse, but it takes a creative teacher to bring those connections into the classroom in a meaningful way. As BB&N third graders in Carolina Gómez-Kramer’s Spanish class were learning how to introduce themselves and talk about some of their favorite things in Spanish, she had the perfect idea to help them practice their reading and writing skills: penpals!

Noted Baum, “The students showed great empathy toward the multiple local and global stakeholders, as they communicated with diverse interest groups across boundaries in order to envision a creative and innovative solution and act upon it. As part of the course, the students were asked to investigate an organization that would support their vision, and were challenged to embody the school motto: Honor Scholarship Kindness.”



Through a Facebook Spanish teacher’s group last fall, Señora Gómez-Kramer connected with Viviana Pérez Urrego, who was teaching third grade at Colegio Municipal Comfandi in Cali, Colombia, and the partnership was born. The students exchanged letters twice, with the BB&N students writing one letter in Spanish and the second in English, while the students

in Colombia wrote their first letter in English and their second in Spanish, and also exchanged short videos. After meeting with teachers at the school during her trip to Colombia this summer, Señora Gómez-Kramer is developing other plans to enhance the partnership in the year ahead. Sixth graders have also enjoyed having international penpals this year through a creative partnership between BB&N and a school in Kagina, Rwanda, built by the Crimson Foundation, which provides educational opportunities for less fortunate children in Africa. Sixth grade math teacher Berhane Zerom, a member of the Foundation’s board, established the program several years ago, through which BB&N students raise or contribute $87 a year to sponsor a student at the school in Kagina and correspond with their student throughout the year. BB&N students had a special treat when they were able to Skype with their penpals during Mr. Zerom’s visit to the school this spring.

“At the beginning of last year I gave an assignment to a few particularly passionate 7th grade science students. The assignment was to investigate what it would take to turn the Middle School into a carbon-neutral campus. “The faculty and administrators who gathered to hear the students’ presentation in April were all impressed by the depth and breadth of their research and recommendations, which ranged from solar panels to geothermal heating to composting. While researching and evaluating the relative cost and practicality of the various options, they also understood that some solutions would be best addressed during or after the planned renovation of the Middle School campus. KINDNESS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Care for the environment and initiatives to promote sustainability have been an integral part of the BB&N community for many years. From the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Nicholas Athletic Center to the community gardens at the Lower School, environmental issues are being addressed daily by BB&N students, faculty, and administrators.

BB&N’s youngest students in the Morse Building have been leading the Lower School’s efforts to promote a more environmentally conscious community by having their daily snacks delivered in recyclable bags, and educating themselves and the community about the importance of composting. On a Family Science Saturday in April, Lower School students recycled bikes, scooters, and skateboards as part of Zero Waste Day; and the campus hosted the first (hopefully annual) Harvest Festival to reap the produce from the NewWing and Brick Building Gardens. At the Upper School, the Environmental Action Committee organized the installation of “hydration stations” and the purchase of BB&N water bottles for students and faculty to reduce the use of plastic bottles. During Senior Spring Project, art teacher Laura Tangusso and physics teacher Rachel Riemer co-taught a course called Environmental Solutions, which surveyed some of the newest and most innovative approaches to sustainability, looking not just at specific approaches but also at some of the deeper thinking around the meaning of sustainability. With the help of a summer professional development grant, Laura, Rachel, and science teacher Willnetta Ball hope to develop a year-long elective course addressing issues of sustainability.

KINDNESS ACROSS CAMPUSES

Each year Kindergarten students are matched with a Grade 4 student “buddy,” with buddy groups spending time together reading, playing, and working on larger projects. Earlier this year, Kindergarten teachers Ben Goldhaber and Maria Barton and Grade 4 teacher Laura McCammack suggested that it would be fun for the buddies to collaborate on a community service project.

The students quickly decided to focus their project on The Family Cooperative Faculty/Staff Daycare Center located at BB&N’s 46 Belmont Street campus. After visiting the Center to meet the children, look at the space, and noting their needs and interests, students came up with a list of items that included puzzles, books, mobiles, stuffed animals, wooden toys, and a toy chest. They then spent their “buddy time” in pairs and small groups, working together to make these items for their new young friends. “The variety of projects has encouraged creativity,” said the BB&N teachers, “and making something for someone else has encouraged selflessness and generosity.” “It’s so important to knit the two communities together like this,” said Anne Haycox, Assistant Director of The Family Cooperative. “And it’s important for the children here to know they belong to a broader community of students and to know that these toys came from those students.”

Gifts to BB&N, whether for current operations, capital projects, or endowment, are an investment in the School’s present and future. Thanks to the generosity of BB&N donors over the years and sound financial management, BB&N’s endowment has had steady growth in recent years. The estimated (unaudited) market value of the BB&N endowment as of June 30, 2014, is $73.69 million. BB&N CFO/COO Brett Fuhrman is pleased to share a number of highlights regarding the School’s investment strategy and practices:

•B B&N works closely with a strong, highly respected

Under the leadership of Senior Parents’ Gift Co-Chairs Phil and Ellie Loughlin, Jeff Moore and Barbara Southcote, and a dedicated committee of parent volunteers, the Class of 2014 Senior Parents’ Gift raised a remarkable class gift of $1,000,310 to support BB&N’s capital and annual giving priorities. The 2014 Senior Parents’ Gift included $618,240 to establish the BB&N Financial Aid Enrichment Fund which will be used to support the supplemental/ non-tuition portion of the financial aid budget. In addition, $76,800 was contributed by senior parents for other capital/endowment initiatives, and $305,270 for The BB&N Fund and other areas of the operating budget. We are particularly delighted that nearly 100% of Senior Parents participated in this special fundraising program as an opportunity to show their appreciation to BB&N for the exceptional educational experience provided to their children. 2014 - Senior Class Gift The Senior Class Gift is coordinated by the Senior Class Ambassador Committee and provides an opportunity for BB&N Seniors to work together to achieve a common goal in support of their school community. The Ambassadors reach out to classmates throughout the year to help educate the Class about what it means to be a BB&N alumnus/a and about the importance of The BB&N Fund. This year’s Senior Class achieved 100% participation in the Senior Class Gift and raised a remarkable $2,120, which was matched by senior parents for a total gift of $4,240, with all funds directed to The BB&N Fund to support Financial Aid.

Every May the BB&N Circus brings together the entire community for a day of fun. Countless parent volunteers work tirelessly to make this a special celebration for the children. This year the Circus raised more than $9,000 to benefit financial aid for Lower School students. BB&N’s tenth annual golf tournament brought together alumni/ae, parents, and other friends in a benefit for the School’s athletic program.
