BBHS joins quincentennial anniversary
Mayor Cristy Angeles (middle) inspects the proposed quarantine facilty at Baras - Baras, Tarlac City.
AILEEN PIMENTEL
In the Philippines, this month marks the introduction of Christianity as well as other activities. On the 20th day of April in the current year, Baras- Baras High School hung the Philippine flag and displayed quincentennial banners led by its AP Leader, Ma’am Mafhel Pili in support of the Philippines’ 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations.
Mayor Cristy establishes COVID-19 quarantine facility in Baras-Baras SHAYNE ALYSON BASILIO Mayor Cristy Angeles turned the Evacuation Center in Barangay BarasBaras, Tarlac City as a Quarantine Facility for asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Despite of the various implementations towards the Pandemic, as of May 3, 2021, the Department of Health has confirmed 146 COVID-19 cases, 76 recoveries and 13 deaths in the Province of Tarlac. Upon the threat of the continuous number of COVID-19 positive cases in the said Province, Mayor Cristy Angeles decided to lend the Evacuation Center located in Brgy. Baras-Baras, as a Quarantine Facility
for the Asymptomatic COVID-19 positive patients.
“As a student, these facilities will keep the community healthy and prevent the virus from spreading to other parts of the city. As a result, asymptomatic or moderate cases, as well as suspected cases, can be identified immediately. But the problem I see here is the small space of our community.” said Lloyd Romin from Grade 12 Orwell. It is said that 35 asymptomatic patients can fill the fully secured facility with 24/7 monitoring of the doctors and nurses from the City Health Office.
“To be honest, I am scared about the risk of having quarantine facility, but I trust that they will not agree to build this without any purpose” said by Carmela Sulpacio from Grade 11 Marx. The risky upholding of the Tarlac City Quarantine Facility aims to secure the safety of the family of the patients and to prevent the people’s urge on insisting into our hospitals, and in order to protect our frontliners. The strike of Pandemic is indeed hard to endure but we, Filipinos must strike harder to surpass it.
The 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP) are a series of activities commemorating the 500th anniversary of various events in the Philippines, including the advent of Christianity. Baras-Baras High School, in keeping with its theme of Victory and Humanity, participates in commemorating and reliving the victory and humanity that our forefathers achieved. With the way it commemorates the quincentennial or 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the earth, the Philippine government wants to change the historical lens. Under the vigorous leadership of Ma’am Mafhel S. Pili, the said celebration was a success.

BBHS student leaders had their profiles labeled with the word “Delegate”. After that, the organizers gave the first asynchronous activity; posting “ALeaderOnceSaid”. It is where participants share their favorite quote from their ideal leader to inspire their fellow students and student leaders. One of the BBHS student leaders Margie Ayson, posted a quote by Brian Tracy “Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position.” Afterward, the first synchronous activity was also given. “TALAhulugan”, is an emoji-decoding game, held on April 26, where its purpose is to challenge ones’ critical thinking that is applied in leadership. Ruth Orendain from BBHS, wins 2 out of 3 winning points of her group, in a tie with the opponent. Second is the “TALAsayawan” held on April 28, which is a fun group activity that showed the importance of being enthusiastic as leaders, during this pandemic. It is a dance video compilation of the song “Tala” by Sarah Geronimo –that is posted by each group on Facebook. The BBHS Supreme Student Government showed their full support to the participants by promoting their videos on their Facebook page, for more chances of winning, for “the most liked video”.
“TALAala” is another posting activity on Facebook, held on May 3, that features or encapsulates the participant’s favorite moments or stories, before the pandemic. SSG secretary officer Mercy Cabenta, posted on Facebook reminiscent pictures of her on fun school activities, way back from the year 2016 to 2020, along with the caption “Covid, take me back.” Lastly, on the main competition “TALAstasan”;held in April 26 to May 3. Moises Panguelo’s group “The Gambit” won 3rd place in the Podcast-making, where they each discuss their takes on the given topic – “What is a competent leader? or what is the essence of student leadership in todays’ norm?”. Panguelo’s group received a cash prize of 1000 pesos and was featured on TALA’s main event.
about the speech.“Na inspired ako agad sa sinabi ni Atty. Chel Diokno na “You are never too young to be a leader” because it always crossed my mind na baka, kahit I’m entitled as a student leader, older people would not take me seriously when I strive to be a greater leader, just because I’m still a student or “ambata mo pa”, “marami ka pang dapat matutunan” – which are all true, although It shouldn’t barred me from achieving my goals, and I should also be proud of myself right now because I’m making this progress where I hone my leadership skills at only a young age.”
Finally, the main event was held on May 8 at Zoom, were guest speakers Atty. Chel Diokno and Ms. Clarissa Balilia shared their pearls of wisdom about leadership while empowering them to become the best leaders they can be for our future. BBHS embraces ‘new normal’ college application process KEZIAH JEMIMAH MANGACO Amidst the new normal, the grade 12 students faced difficult decisions about the college application brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this situation, the future college students of Baras-Baras High School embrace the new normal college application process. Tarlac State University (TSU) and Tarlac Agricultural University announces the opening of college admission evaluation (CAE) for incoming freshmen for the school year 2021-2022, the submission of online application of TSU is from January 26, 2021 until April 30, 2021 and the TAU is from April 5, 2021 to June 5, 2021. The higher education environment is almost evolving each day and the college application process itself is complicated enough that it directly affects the students. 10 out 59 students didn’t enroll in this year’s college application. On those who pursued college education
Despite the changes, grade 12 students of BBHS are still largely interested in pursuing higher education and tried to apply for the new normal college application. Most of the students send their application form in Tarlac State University and some are in Tarlac Agricultural University. Aizelle Panguelo is the SSG President of BBHS. According to her, some things have changed when it comes to applying to college in the time of COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from the changes happening in the applying process, deciding on what courses they must choose also have changed. This is because during this pandemic there are many jobs that are affected. For example some students dreamt to become flight attendants at first, but then the pandemic happened and there are airlines that have been affected and drop-off some of their crews. This impacted the decisions of the students by thinking that they will have a very low chance to work in airlines, if this pandemic still exists after college. As a solution, they chose another course as an alternative to what they
really want to become for their future. But looking at the brighter side, Panguelo insisted that despite their difficulty in choosing their courses, the thought of not pursuing college after Senior High school never came into their mind for the reason that they are really determined to reach their sure goals.
college at least I’m happy when I see them happy on the path that they are taking” Jessa Olivar Pandemic stopped some students to apply this year college application but did succeed in stopping them to still pursue college in the future. “Undecided ako sa pag-aaral sa college sapagkat mahirap ang panahon ngayon dahil sa pandemic. Sa panahon ngayon uunahin ko muna ang pagtatrabaho at kapag nakapag-ipon na ako ng pera o kaya kaya ko ng harapin ang college, ipagpapatuloy ko ang aking pag-aaral” Mervin Dahang, a tvl student said.
On those who decided to stop their academic journey For some students, the challenges of COVID-19 are just an interference with their daily lives but for others, the disease and its consequences are absolutely traumatic, with financial crises. - Some students decided not to apply this year college application to help their parents to earn money to help their siblings to finish their studies. “Kaya hindi na ako magkokolehiyo kasi gusto ko tulungan mga magulang ko sa pag-aaral sa mga kapatid ko” Jhane Dupitas from tvl tailoring said. “I want to help my parents to support my younger sister to their study because I want them to finish their study. BBHS studes condemn Filipinos’ marginalized comments on Miss Universe contenders Disgrace – students of BBHS says that we should not tolerate Filipinos’ indulgence on offensive racial “jokes” and baseless accusations towards Miss Universe contestants. On May 16, 2021, Rabiya Mateo represented our country in the Miss Universe 2020, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it meant mounts of unprecedented social media-centered pageants effort for both candidates, organizations, as well as for the supporters. When pictures of the candidates are posted on social media, the upsurge of Filipinos’ posts, comments, and memes once again blows up in Facebook and other social media platform. Although a majority of the Filipinos showed their patriotism and their full support on Rabiya, there has also been many ignorant Filipinos that started an online hate, such as giving racist comments and false accusations towards other Miss Universe candidates, that students of BBHS condemn. According to Keziah Mangaco of grade 12 Orwell, the Filipinos showed a crab mentality and tend to drag other Filipino down, instead of showing support to our representative –when ignorant Filipinos called a woman of color( Miss Canada) “scary” and “burnt chicken”. “I feel embarrassed for some of my Filipino
pageant fans for their racist jokes and comments towards Miss Canada. Yes, no one says you have to support all the contestants, but we Filipinos must learn to support our delegates without bringing others down,” she stated. “All of these attitudes should stop. This cannot be our fate, and we cannot accept that these stupid and toxic acts remarks from these ignorant bigots who happen to be Filipinos are what would define us as a people,” she added. The racial discrimination towards Miss Canada wasn’t just the only disgraceful part that Filipinos did during the Miss Universe’s competition. They also accused Miss Thailand of being a “copycat” of Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray, and made hateful comments disguised as a compliment, with a Tagalog context telling her that she wouldn’t win. Many Filipinos found this “jokes” funny until Miss Thailand learned about the hateful comments. According to grade 10 student, Angel Chogyomon, the possible root of this online hate towards Miss Universe Thailand may be the seen potential of her, that somehow made the Filipino pageant fans feel threatened. Thus, creating mockery on the contestant. “Miss Thailand has a lot of potential and I believe that she doesn’t deserve the hate. To be honest I don’t see her as a copycat. Katunayan isa
Pres. Duterte issues gag order over WPS case; students raise concerns SHAYNE ALYSON BASILIO President Duterte closes his cabinet and banned the officials from discussing about the South China Sea in public. He issues a gag order on May, 2021. According to him, the order may show more coherent strategy and could lessen the tension and rhetorical level towards the occuring argument of Filipino between China towards the sea. Beijing claims almost the entire West Philippine Sea and has built military installations equipped with missiles on reefs in disputed areas, including within the Philippines EEZ, alongside a constant presence of coastguard and fishing vessels. Duterte said that the order did not mean the country was wavering in its defense of its sovereign rights and that it should not be interpret as weakness. He also stated that our

and learners brought by this pandemic, which gave way for the parents to answer their childs’ learning materials or modules, on account of the 4ps benefits, which they can only receive if the student passed the required grade.
When Mr. Ordonez received the initial assessments from the English teachers of BBHS about the number of struggling non-reader in BBHS, the assessment concluded that there is only one non-reader in JHS. However, Sir Jon took the initiative and directly asked some students to became better acquainted with the actual number of struggling non-readers and discovered that there were more students that is not included in the report.
After several home visitations and dialogues with the students and the parents, sir Jon, then made the effort to also form an extension program for the community. When sir Jon was asked about the reasons to why he took the initiative to form an extension program despite his busy schedules and obligations as a senior high school teacher, sir Jon said there is no reason. “I can recall a quote from the anime, My Hero Academia that goes something like this, “Many heroes all show the same quality when they’re younger — they all remember their bodies moving before their minds could think.” And though I haven’t really thought of my personal reason for doing this initiative — let alone know where to even get the resources to execute this program. All I know is that they needed help and my body just moved,” he stated.
Thereupon, Sir Jon made home visitations, some in remote areas –for the struggling non-readers and individually taught them the step-by-step knowledge on reading. After interacting with the parents and the students, sir Jon found out that most of the reason for these number of struggling non-reader, connects to the limited communication towards educators
“We need the tension. China will not stop until every corners of the west Philippine seas are infested with Chinese vessels. Haven’t our country stayed silent enough? Prohibiting the Filipinos to their convictions will just make them more angry to the Philippine Government’s incompetence, especially when this issue should be talked more to the public so Filipinos can somehow see that the government is at the side of it’s people.” she stated.

to think of the way how to comply by simply submitting or uploading their works online. For example, if a student have to submit a paper online but due to some circumstances failed to do so on time because he or she loses internet connection, we can only imagine the frustration that this student will get from receiving a low grade for late submission or no grade at all – worst case scenario. Likewise, submitting module personally can also imply this instance of submitting late especially with limitations with the government on those people that can only go outside. Moreover, this kind of system will create a culture where a student’s top priority is just to finish everything prior to the date without minding if he or she actually learned from the materials. Students nowadays are going through mental as a result, they tend to lessen this burden by seeking help with others just to get it done.
WALKING BETWEEN
LEARNING AND COMPLIANCE Learning distance education has become a part of the new normal not only to abide with the mandate of the government, but also to respond with the need of continuous learning. Things are not easy for both teachers and students when moving academically from one phase to another. The unexpected transition brought by this pandemic becomes a struggle without sufficient opportunities to design for a new mode of learning.
‘‘
This kind of system will create a culture where a student’s top priority is just to finish everything prior to the date without minding if he or she actually learned
For instance, the need to shift to online learning (such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Messenger) creates improbability for teachers and students. Because not everyone has enough resources to stay online, most of the students – especially in state universities – rely on free Facebook for communication. The burden of data consumption through video conferencing is something that not everyone can afford. In addition, our countries capability to provide us with faster internet connection is also a matter for consideration. According to the data of Ookla Report of global mobile internet speed rankings, the Philippines moved up to the 86th spot in in January 2021. This is a marked improvement from its 111th rank in the same period last 2020. For fixed broadband, the country’s average download speed was recorded at 32.73 Mbps.
to provide students options to learn and comply with their academics.
With this, it is not also the issue of who can afford an online learning or who cannot. That is why blended learning has been imposed as well
The problem before is how students can keep up with the lessons, learning through homework, thus, earning good grades. But today, they have
What is more evident in this new normal is that educators and students are having a hard time finding real joy in learning with contrast to how they interact before. The tagline “academic freeze” that circulated in the social media reflected because one cannot imagine a life of learning away from their beloved teachers, friends, and even colleagues. In contrast, it is overwhelming to do the usual inside their houses with the set of obligations and responsibilities they have to accomplish, giving them less time to work on their academics and less time also to reflect on the essence of doing it.
Blended learning therefore means learning in which students can, in part, control the time, pace, and place. Each school – whether public or private – have designed blended learning model, in which teachers determine the combination that’s right for them and their students. With all these data and facts collected, it is indeed undeniable if everyone is at the same phase of embracing the new normal. With this being said, it is considered that somehow, the ineffectiveness of blended learning is a hard to swallow pill for both educators and students. There are demands academically that students need to meet adding to the burden of how to get it done simply because blended learning is not for everyone.

that could really stop us from studying such as tv, cellphones, pets, and even your family that are supposed to be forbidden if it’s face fo face classes. These changes occured from face to face to new normal eduaction is really a big rock we faced. I know that a lot of us have thought of giving up, and just let everything to God. But I know that they didn’t. Because an honor student like me wouldn’t just give up that fast, wouldn’t give up beacuse we have good pressure that pushes us to be strong enough to conquer every battles we will face.
KURISUTERUROREIN
GOOD PRESSURE Have you ever seen an honor student which just relaxes and does nothing to maintain his/her grades but still able to be an honor student? If so, those are honor students that are gifted in terms of iq capacity. They can maintain their grades without pressure, without working too hard, and without fear of failing, well a big “sana all” to them. Because from normal honor students like me, it is indeed different. Difficult that has been more difficult because of distance leaning. Do you know how difficult? Honor students like us, are somehow called greedy on grades. People think that we are demanding, we aren’t satisfied with only passing grades. We aren’t someone who’s gonna let our requirements blank at all. If possible we will do it advancedly. We are someone who carries a big pressure on our mind, on our heart, and on our body. Why? Because we are honor students that fear failing our family, friends, and relatives’ expectation. The society sink
in to our mind that we need to maintain our grades or else people will think that we didn’t study hard, we are having distractions and worse, we messed up. These things isn’t already new to honor students like me. We have able to accept these things as our responsibilities to continue what we have started. However, this just last October, a new book of difficulties challenged us. From a stone, we faced a rock. Distance Learning is an alternative way of learning that has been implemented enable to continue schooling even in the midst of pandemic. We, honor students are greatly thankful because we are given the chance to continue our legacy in school. However, it didn’t became easy for us to cope up with a lot of changes occured. First of all, the change from face to face to modular class, wherein we won’t already be thought by our teachers traditionally. We will have to
Kristel Lorraine Casimiro study by ourselves which makes it hard for us to maintain our grades. We need to put more efforts and patience on understanding our lessons. Browsing on internet for more understandable textbooks. Second, it is difficult for us to remember the lessons as it just passes on our eyes without a valid explanation given by the teachers that is supposed to be if it’s face to face learning. Third, the adjustments of time is also hard as the time in home isn’t all yours. There are times that you’ll have to help your parents in different things such as selling, and times that you’ll need to personally sell since pandemic is so tough. And lastly, it is hard to adjust from school to home as your place of studying. It is really hard conditioning your mind to be ready to learn as it knew that home is a place to relax and chill. Also, add the destructions in houses
EDITOR’S NOTE Floating lanterns always fascinated me. When I first saw them, I didn’t expect that they could be real. How could a lantern actually fly without wings? I am Keziah Jemimah C. Mangaco, your Editor- in chief. As someone who loves a good story, I’d like to tell you one. I am a high school student, who always join press cons but I didn’t win even one. I used to write personal essays, short stories, poems just because I am a HUMSS student. There is one time I compared myself to a lantern. If I would be a lantern, I am probably - A lantern without a fire. I used to be contented being amazed looking up on other lanterns above the sky, and dreamt that I am one of them. Not until I became the Editor-in-chief of this Publication, my perception totally changed. I’ve realized I need to open up my heart and find the light within myself.

I would like to thank of course our paper adviser for giving me this unexpected opportunity to me to serve as the first Editor-in-Chief of the Northern Sentinel Publication. Also for the guidance and support to me as I started and replaced on this position. I learned a lot from this publication and I will never stop learning. I want to thank all of the board staffs of this publication. BAYANIHAN:
A SYMPTOM OF A FAILED GOVERNMENT Keziah Jemimah Mangaco The pandemic, along with the expansion of community pantries, has ushered in a new period of “bayanihan.”Yes, bayanihan implies we help each other, but this time it’s just because we don’t have any other choices. It is not against the law to feed the hungry and help those in need. Instead of being red-tagged, community pantries should be nurtured. People contribute food and other supplies to community pantries, also known as food banks, which are situated on streets or plazas and provided to anyone in need. The first community pantry opened on April 14, 2021, at Quezon City’s Maginhawa Street, a middle-class area. Anna Patricia Non, is the woman behind the quickly spreading community pantries in the Philippines during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On Maginhawa Street, Ana Patricia Non, a 26-year-old community pantry organizer, set up a single bamboo cart with basic food items.Community pantries embody the Filipino spirit of “bayanihan.” A homemade cardboard sign on the cart said, “Magbigay ayon sa kakayahan, kumuha batay sa pangangailan-
gan,” which translates to “Give according to one’s ability, get according to one’s need.”A few days after the one in Maginhawa began, the idea of establishing communal pantries gained traction, and this improvised version of old Marxist doctrine quickly went viral. Ana Patricia Non, the organizer of the pioneering Maginhawa Community Pantry, revealed in a social media post that she had temporarily halted operations when three police officers demanded her personal information, including her phone number and membership in groups. The Maginhawa community pantry temporarily ceased operations after its organizer was accused of having communist affiliations. It has been subjected to policing and red-tagged. Instead of basic actions, like helping a neighbor relocate or conducting community clean-up drives, the inactivity of the government on problems like pandemic-born hunger has pushed us against the wall. This new era of bayanihan has occurred into realization because of the significant problems the government has not resolved. If we look at the preamble to the

This government has failed to provide us with what we deserve. The billions we borrowed and the taxes we paid
should have been enough to ensure that no one fell between the cracks during the crisis. Community pantries shouldn’t be necessary in the first place, if we think about it.Yet here we are, once again dependent on the generosity of private individuals to ensure our survival. INTELLECTUAL PROSTITUTION: A TWO-SIDED SOLUTION Leean Margarette Magat
Inclined with the rising numbers of positive cases of Covid-19 in the Philippines, the government decided to have the country undergo a quarantine on March 2019 which limits the people from going out of their houses. The normal living has suddenly stopped. Establishments were closed, the school year 20192020 was paused. And because of that, many people lost their jobs and source of income. So when the new school year started in the middle of pandemic, students thought of a way to help sustain the needs of their families. The opening of the school year made way for students to earn money in a way that they can also learn more. Intellectual Prostitution became a popular business for the students. Payments in exchange of written works. And I think it is good for the people who needs money, who needs to support their family. But on the other side, the students who pay for their projects is clearly an example of how lazy people can be. As a student who works hard to achieve a high grade and bountiful knowledge, I disagree on how
some of the students decided to deal with their educational problems. According to potomac.edu, out of 6.7 million college students, nearly 70% claimed that online learning is as good or better than traditional classroom settings. This proves that even college students were able to comply and go with the flow even in these hard times. I believe that determination and willingness can be a good characteristics in finishing every project and school works. There is also time management which can be a very big help if practiced properly. But because intellectual prostitution were made, students felt at ease to not do any project and just rely on what their money can do. I would have also made this choice if but know that it would not lead to good results. Students who depend on others to finish their works may not remember anything from their classes or lessons. Projects are made to determine the knowledge of the students on their lessons. And if the students chose to pass their responsibility, they may not learn anything at all. According to PayScale, these are the top three hard skills most recent grads are lacking: writing proficiency, public speaking, and data analysis. If you’ll remember, most of these skills can be nurtured through projects and school works that being assigned to the students.

Robin Magampo These projects will prepare them for whatever job they will have in the future. And if the students did not learn from school works, then how would they be able to do their tasks in their respective jobs. Intellectual prostitution can lead to laziness. Students who depend on the work of others can carry this laziness until they become old. As the elders say, “start them young”. Tolerating their attitude in depending on others about their tasks can lead to laziness in the future. This can effect on how they will live their life.
how we will live our life. We need to learn from our mistakes early in life, than live our future with no assurance of success. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. We can consider this type of solution in times of desperation only with deep analysis of the situation. But as long as we know in our self that we can do every project, let’s not depend on the power of our money, but rather help ourselves overcome these beneficial challenge given to us.
I believe that life is a matter of choice. Our choices will define

JOURNEY TO THE NEW WORLD:
ANIME WORLD PORTAL PRECIOUS MAE BARCENA I mostly watch cartoons on canton network before I ended up watching anime series and movies. I began watching anime later than most otaku. Otaku is a Japanese term for people who have interest in anime and manga. My reason why I avoided watching anime before is because for me anime is weird. Really weird that the animation is very unique and you’ll feel lots of emotions and they’ve made me feel something I can’t really describe. The first emotion I felt is being amazed on how they done it very well, from the smallest to biggest details on the whole duration of the anime I watched which is Attack on titan. I also felt a bit more happy and open-minded, as if each series had its own underlying philosophy.
It was summer of 2014 when I first watched an anime series. Shingeki no Kyojin also known as Attack on titan is the first anime I watched; it is good that my perceptions about anime changed. Since then, I explored the anime world and that became my obsession. Anime is a style of Japanese TV or Film. Anime typically aimed adults as well as children. Japanese animation is Japan’s most prominent culture features. Japanese Animation debuted in 1960’s. These are countless of animations produced and release every year. Anime shows are popular locally because they portray themes and plots. They produced genre about science fictions, police stories, historical, adventures, romance, comedy etc.
Many Filipinos love to watch anime particularly the students. Maybe half of the population of the Philippines watch anime. The reason why the students are fond watching anime is because most of the shows in the Philippines are comedy, drama and actions. You can’t see much animated movies or films in the Philippines. According to Japan Info, anime has become one of the best resources nowadays to tell stories in any genre and for any audience which are generally aimed adults as well as children.
Anime got famous towards students of Baras-Baras High School. It started during the first weeks of Lockdown and became more well-known after ABS-CBN shut down. Some of Otaku have fictiophilia, it is an attraction towards fictional characters it is commonly known as fan boy or fan girls. Otaku became fictiophilia is mainly because they became infatuated to the anime characters for the reason of the character’s features.
Anime gained success in other countries specially in the Philippines when early series such as Dragon ball, Astro boy, Sailor Moon and Slam Dunk. There are many people who started to become interested in Japan they even inspired to learn Japanese.

SPEND TO INVEST, NOT TO IMPRESS. CARMELA JOY SULPACIO
To survive in everyday life isn’t easy, Imagine how hard each day person spend their time working inside and outside the country just to eat 3 times a day, to sustain basic needs, to support child education, and pay for other bills Have you ever notice that If life before is difficult to find money and food. how ridiculously it is, that the life we had now is much hardest than we thought will become. But we’re still lucky enough because technologies are invented before. These technologies help us to cope with the new setup of life. We can use them to produce an income by doing such things as blogging, online selling, online teaching, working from home and the payments would be through digital like g-cash. A Senior High School student of Baras-Baras High School is ventured into online selling-one of the safest ways to get income during a pandemic. This student is Raine Tagara of 11 Pandora. The challenges she encountered are some clothes have a stain, that hard to sell, and those who say “mine” they didn’t get the item in the exact time so they struggling to reach the profit and they are the ones who obliges to pay for the item/s.
Raine Tagara’s mindset is what’s the youth need, especially in this pandemic. She said that “our mindset should be always positive because it is the law of attraction, if your mindset is full of negativity nothing will happen to you, you’ll just make your life harder hundred times”. In addition, the World is round, if you are at the bottom now, you’ll not be there always, because someday, somewhere, unexpectedly, you’ll be at the top. She even provides 5 pieces of advice for the soon-to-be young entrepreneur to also help them to reach their goals in life. The first is to Set your goals, it will assist students to focus on what should need to be prioritized. It is also helpful in terms of improving planning, organizing, and communicating. VIRAL TIKTOK VOICEOVERS CARMELA JOY SULPACIO Since everyone is finding a way out for their boredom and stressful situation in the quarantine set-up, Tiktok has been one of the keys out of the mundaneness. WHAT TO DO DURING HOME QUARANTINE? ANGEL CHOGYOMON It’s been a year since the global pandemic hit the whole world many countries are undergoing a home quarantine to secure the safety of their people. As for now, we’re not yet allowed to go out and meet each other. Many people are depressed and hopeless because of the less exposure outside and lack of communication. Yet, other people can see this as an opportunity to start a new life and new routine. We can be a different version of ourselves that no one has seen before, trying to do many things that can distract them from negativity. A singer can be a dancer, can be an artist, or can be a writer. There are no rules now that you’re alone and free to explore your ability to create and grow at home. Being health-conscious is a good sign to start changing and prioritizing your body. If you’re good at Arts, you can try a new art style to challenge your capacity as an artist. You can try calligraphy or painting, which is a good distraction and discovery for an artist. If you want to help our mother nature to heal, you better help out your mother by planting plans outside. You shall do it together while asking her to pay for your parcel. It can be your time together as bonding and to build a strong connection between each other. Writing is also a good way of expressing yourself, emotions, and opinions. You can use this to make others feel what you feel because readers use their feelings to be attached to the story. It can make them cry, laugh, or realized something and begin to do it in their everyday life. You can also improve your writing skills and vocabulary. It can help to enlarge your knowledge and share it at the same time. You can read a book or make books, something that can develop you and others. In this time of crisis, all we can see is negativity and hopelessness. But, when we know how to turn things positive, we can make the situation nice and smooth, like how businesses see the pandemic as an opportunity. And like how diamond look fake when it’s in the ground. We can’t assure the beauty of something if we can’t see the value of it, like how we discover that there’s a fire when there’s a cloud of smoke. Make your everyday a new beginning and be a positive energy to every people around you. Be the person you wanted to be while you have a chance because this is a chance, not a lifetime.
CHALLENGES: DESPITE OF THIS SITUATION, THEY FIGHT THROUGH NICOLE ANN MORALES October 5,2020 where the new method of learning start, distance learning that gave us challenges and changes began cause of Covid-19 pandemic. Especially to our teachers who have been one of the instruments to be delivered to us the lessons, that we can keep up with new normal setup. Tremendous really changed, especially since not all of us have connection and access to the internet and mobile gadgets that distance learning really needs today. But there are our teachers, especially the teachers of Baras-Baras who make different preparation and strategies for us there students, but it is not just about teachers in Baras-Baras, it is all about in general because all teachers in the world have something to sacrifice and give, do for their students like in preparing a module or modular learning for public and online classes for private schools.
of our students. We try our best to provide the education our learners need. We attend webinars in connection with the new setting of education, but we admit, it is not enough. It really saddens us teacher not to give quality education to our students”. Yes, like they said we are all in a challenging situation that we are not prepared like for example the enemy came that we have no shield, or we are not ready. Those who have a plan but there have been changes that we must follow because for our own safety anyway. Same, in the situation of both teachers and students facing right now that you really must sacrifice something for you to do the thing that is important, like do something you never did before. Maximizing your time in important things. What those strategies or ways you conducting to deliver the lessons to the students?
What are the preparations you did for the new normal setup? To cope with distance learning.
“Strategies in delivering the lessons to the students are pretty basic. We just need to make all possible communication lines open and make yourself available almost 24/7. It may sound easy, but it is the opposite. Students are hardheaded and they think that distance learning should be taken seriously that is why educators put extra effort to monitors every learner”- said Mr. Gerald Daguio Bulusan.
Mr. Gerald Daguio Bulusan of grade 11 said. “Truly, this year is the most challenging school year I have ever had so far. There were so many things that needed to be adjusted and it set aside from the other school preparations. Clearly, the standard of quality education has been lowered and we need to cope up with that. I, personally, prepared myself for more work than the usual and made sure that my goal to deliver what it is expected from me is achieved. I made sure that resources are at reach for we needed them more than ever. As for coping, constant communication to students and their guardians is one of the best keys”.
“Our school adopts printed modular delivery of learning since most of the students cannot afford gadgets for online class. But as a supplementary, we created group chats for every class we have so that we can monitor students’ progress in answering their modules, I even send instructional videos as an aid for the students because I strongly believe that it is very hard for them to learn independently especially in math. My lines are open 24/7 to answer my students’ questions and clarifications regarding their lessons. I assist them in understanding their modules even it is not my specialization”- said Ms. Roussel Palmaria.
Ms. Roussel Palmaria of grade 10 said. “There are not actually preparations done. Nobody is prepared in this pandemic. We, teachers adjust to the call of the new normal. We adapt what our department (DepEd) gives us. We basically maximize the resources we have. We even use our personal resources to provide the needs
As said, they make themselves free almost 24/7 to answer what their students concerns and clarification. We know that it is difficult to study the lesson independently, so they created these techniques to help students who have difficulty with lessons like what Ms. Palmaria mentioned it is hard independently to learn
So that mostly in our teachers are make discussion through creating video presentation, virtual, tapping in messenger and making lecture transcript that we are vividly understand the lesson in are modules.
especially in math. Thats why they prepared different strategies to assist there students by making video presentation and conducting a virtual or google meet discussions on the topic that students are having difficulty with. Monitoring to see if there students, as we, have progression in the lesson by answering modules. Our teachers are really doing different strategies and sacrifices so that we can be assisted and monitored to our concerns and clarification that they are still making their line open 24/7 to answer what are the difficulties in lessons. Now we are really experiencing and going through those
changes and challenges they are one of the heroes we can really say, like today’s fronliners who are sacrificing and have different strategies that they are, there to assist in different situations.

MOVIE REVIEW RUTH ORENDAIN
The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a 2021 American computer-animated science fiction comedy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. The film was directed by Mike Rianda, co-directed by Jeff Rowe, and written by Rianda and Rowe, with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Kurt Albrecht serving as producers. The film was originally planned to be released on theaters in 2020, but due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on movie theaters, Sony sold the main distribution rights to Netflix. It was released in select theaters on April 23, 2021, before its streaming release on April 30. The Mitchell’s vs. the machines is a family road-trip adventure that suddenly turns into the story of how a family of four ends up being the only ones who can save
humanity from an AI (Artificial Intelligence) occupation. Young Michigan high school senior Katie Mitchell is a creative aspiring filmmaker who’s ready to embark her journey of a lifetime by leaving everyone who doesn’t get her humor (including her dad which she already grew distant now) and join “her people” as what she calls it, in California. When her parents named Rick and Linda decided to drive cross-country instead of flying her to college, Katie is initially furious about this. But their family road trip together with her dinosaur-obsessed little brother
Aaron and silly pug Monchi ends up cornered with the Apple-like tech company originally created by a CEO named Mark Brown. Unfortunately, the original Pal (AI) isn’t ready to become obsolete, so she immediately reprograms the new models to turn on humans to take revenge Pal CEO Mark. The machines start moving around people up, everything from smart phones, to appliances, to evil toys is all employed to capture every human on the planet. Luckily, the Mitchells end up the last humans to survive the capture. Together, the family must find a way to outsmart the bots and it is up to them including their dog and two friendly defective robots to save humanity. Nowadays, this movie gave
emphasis to teenagers wherein there has been a generation gap between Katie Mitchell and her father Rick because of technology. Katie has a creative soul that has led her to create youtube videos which is pretty unusual but full of humor, most of them starring her chunky pug Monchi in a series called “Dog Cop”; meanwhile, her old/classic dad has no idea how to use technology such as computer or smartphone to even watch these videos that made her daughter famous. Now that Katie is entering school and leaving their home, there has been a wider gap to resolve their personalities towards each other. Despite the apocalypse that is happening, it is also a disguise effort in reality to unite them one more time as daughter-father in a journey. The movie indeed was able to deal with issues surrounding family aspects and the pros and cons of today’s technology. It
just happens to come on the same day that the machines take over the world but this event finally let themselves appreciate each other and saying what they truly feels. Families who watch the movie together can have discussions about effects – both good and bad – of technology and the underlying limits such as screen-time restrictions, as well as subjects in connection to healthy communication and prospects for family relationship.
I know the first thing that comes in your mind when you read “module life hacks.” That it is simply copying answers from your classmate, your friend, or maybe your old classmate from another school, right?. Wrong! Your own hacks could also be searching questions on the internet and simply revising those and put it on your paper and you’re done. Wrong again! It could also be a group work wherein each of you are assigned a specific subject you are good at and simply sending one’s answer in your group chat so you can all complete your modules fast. Wrong again! Yes, it may seem all what we wanted -- something basic. But come to think of it, do you really do a life-hack? Or you’re just the one who’s been tricked and hacked? The real module-life hacks are something that will benefit you and also your soul. And here is a list of module-life hacks that 100% worked for me.
Scan your modules. You can scan all your modules before finally answering it for you to be aware on the things you be needing to do. By scanning your modules, you’ll be able to measure how much time you will need to finish all of those. Like for example you answer your modules without scanning it first, you will just simply answer it and Take it Easy. - Are you one of there are times that you will be those people who were in a shocked “ oh no there’s a video hurry to finish their modules so in creative nonfiction” and you they can freely play afterwards? will eneded up rushing it, howWell sorry to tell you but doing ever if you scan your modules the whole modules in a day isn’t first, you’ll have time thinking on a life-hack, it will just make you what to do with those tasks and more tired of answering modhave time to make sure you ules. Atleast you can answer 1 won’t be rushed when deadline module in the morning and 1 comes. module in the evening, or 2 at a time everyday, and I’ll bet you will have your free time the next days. Don’t Panic! - I know that a lot of you are already pressured the first day they open their modules, thinking how can you finish all of the modules inside your enevelope. But to tell you honestly, it won’t be a help. You should be relaxed because that’s how you will be able to concentrate and think.
Save Them! -Take pictures of your current modules including your answers. I know most of you can relate that some of our modules are just being repeated the next week modules isn’t? So if you have copies from your previous modules and answer you’ll be able to answer those repeated modules very easily. Also having copies of your modules could be an advantage as it will be your reference whenever you forget a lesson. Don’t depend on other people. You’re the one who’s studying, not your teacher, your friend, nor the google! If you will just make other people answer you’re modules you won’t learn and you will just make the same thing again and again in the future because if you haven’t learned the basics, so what more of it becomes harder? So if that happens, you wont struggle anymore pleasing yourself to study. Eat Snacks. Eating peanuts, chocolates or any other snacks will help you think and make your body energized.
A paper and a Glue. We are all being troubled when we had an error while we are writing our answers. We are thinking if we will just repeat the whole thing or just place a correction tape on the error part. However due to this pandemic, correction tape isn’t something we prioritized so we eneded up placing an open and close parenthesis for the errors. But don’t worry you’ll never be troubled anymore. Having a paper you used and a glue solves it all. Just paste the paper with the use of glue on the error and it will looks like nothing happened. Set aside your distractions. PEOPLE A NEW STAR
APPROACHES MERCY CABENTA
A leader or teacher is not born, but rather is formed by his or her life and surroundings. Teaching in educational settings has been a highlight to every career as a leader. Principals are recognized as the institution’s wings and they are responsible for helping faculty and students soar ever higher. Principal acts as the wings and flies that lift their community to the top, but they are still aware of the importance of keeping their feet on the ground. This year, new wings are flying with us to greatest heights for the academic year 2021, a new star approaches the avenue. An effective school leader who possesses skills to create, implement, evaluate, improve, and share a staff development plan – this is how I describe Mr. Mamerto L. Ragel, Jr., the newly-appointed School Head of Baras – Baras High School. What inspired you to work in the education sector? As a second courser (BSBA major in Accounting), it is obvious that being part of the Department of Education wasn’t my first choice. I aspired to become a bank employee but this aspiration wasn’t for me. I was in my 30s when I decided to shift career and went back to school for my second degree (30 units in Education). At that age I should have built a stable career but I was only starting to build one -- you can imagine my desperation back then!

I was given the chance to teach in a private school for 4 years but I dreamt more. So I decided to try my luck in the DepEd -- armed with dreams and motivated by a higher salary (laughs). How did you feel after receiving the news of your transfer to BBHS? When I passed the Principal’s Test, I was offered the BarasBaras High School plantilla. Back then, I was not thinking of a particular school to handle because principals come and go -- we are constantly moving from one school to another.
cooperative, and dedicated to their profession. It is these values they uphold that helped me adjust to my new environment – we work together, we face challenges together, and we celebrate small triumphs together. What special school projects are you now working on with the faculty and staff of BBHS? As reflected in our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) for this School Year 2020-2021, these are our projects, among others:
Project WASH (Water, Sanitation My transfer from a small school and Hygiene) to provide more (Central Azucarera de Tarlac hand wash facilities and comfort High School – Annex) to a bigger rooms. school (BBHS) gave me mixed emotions -- I was afraid but I was Project GARDEN (Great Action also excited. What are your dreams for Baras Baras High School and its faculty and staff? I dream of a Baras-Baras High School that is better than the years before. Better in every aspect: students’ academic and co-curricular performances, the services that we give our stakeholders, and for more deserving teachers to be promoted. I also want the development and progress of the school to be felt by all our stakeholders. I believe all of these dreams will be realized through continuous support and active involvement of the school community and Barangay Baras-Baras in general. Do you have any message for those who aspire to be in the same position as you? As a school leader, I can advise aspirants of this position to possess the following: service, commitment, and dedication. These are all the values I uphold that I believe brought me to the position I am in now.

Good communication and connection between and among the leaders and students are always the best coping strategies in this new learning set-up. We reached out to the students to the best that we can. Online activities and projects were implemented so that even we are far away from each other, we can still hand over to the students the service of servant leadership. What are your plans for this school year? Any special projects that the SSG is planning for the students and the school? For the incoming school year, we, the Supreme Student Government already made our new General Plan of Action. The officers shared and brainstormed innovative projects that surely will help and benefit the students and the school now that we are about to enter another year of none face-to-face mode of learning. COVID-19 VACCINE THE WHATS, WHYS AND HOWS NICOLE MORALES AND MARK JE-AR AGLIBO COVID-19, many of us today regards the vaccine as a cure in Covid-19 disease. According to World Health Organization or (WHO) Vaccines work by training and preparing the bodies natural defences – the immune system – to recognize and fight off the viruses and bacteria they target. Vaccines are designed to prevent disease, rather than treat a disease once you have caught it. Why fear of Vaccination However, the majority in this situation do not want to be vaccinated. According to OCTA Research survey 46% adults filipino’s unwilling to get vaccinated and only 19% are willing. There are those evade to get vaccinated. A study showed that nearly 50% of Filipino’s shun vaccine. Meanwhile, in Baras-Baras Tarlac City, there are residents who believe that they don’t need to be shun to the vaccine. According to one resident, because it was made by scientists or someone who has knowledge in medicine. On the other hand, because it was made for us to avoid any complications from covid-19 and to boost are immune system. Those are waiting for more effective vaccine.
These are a few scenarios that Filipino’s face as they worry about. What are the causes of this situation? The cause of this situation is the spreading of misinformation or fake news in social media about the vaccine’s side effects. According to World Health Organization (WHO) Vaccines are designed to give you immunity without the dangers of getting the disease. It’s common to experience some mild to moderate side effects when receiving vaccinations. Common and mild or moderate side effects are a good thing: they show us that the is ineffective. It means everybody responds differently. And another of the reasons for this is about the previous Dengvaxia where there have been cases of death of some of those vaccinated against it. And the increase in cases of covid-19 positive in the philippines which is also one of the reasons why our countrymen do not want or avoid vaccination, for fear that they will become infected. As many Filipinos spend a lot amount of time online, the internet and social media have become major sources of news and information.
How this fear is addressed The DOH launched the “Check the FAQs” page on its website for Filipinos to have a source of trustworthy information about COVID-19 and its vaccines. Playing an important role in championing media literacy on vaccines, Facebook, Google, TikTok, and Twitter have committed to support the campaign which includes helping build awareness for the initiative. As COVID-19 vaccination becomes top priority across the globe, we must also race to fight disinformation and misinformation surrounding COVID-19 vaccines and the pandemic. Spreading the right information can save lives of our countrymen. We must also avoid misleading information that spreads especially if it is baseless. “As part of our ongoing role in the Philippines’ fight against the pandemic, we’re committed to protecting our platforms from misinformation—and connecting more people to information they can trust. That includes taking down harmful and misleading content across our products, raising authoritative information on Search and YouTube, providing ad grants, and supporting quality news reporting on vaccines. Globally, more than 700,000 videos related to dangerous or false COVID-19 information have been removed and our information panels on YouTube have been viewed 400 billion times, making them a valuable source of credible information. It is an honor to partner with the Department of Health to support the #ChecktheFAQs campaign and help ensure that Filipinos have timely and accurate information which is important to keep people safe and build public trust in vaccines,” said Bernadette Nacario, Country Director - Philippines Also due to the increase and continuous decline of those who test positive for Covid-19 so our countrymen are having doubts about what the vaccine can do to them if they have received or been vaccinated. In addition, the EB of DOH is conducting comprehensive contact tracing activities for all cases. DOH is also in close coordination with concerned Local Government Units and Centers for Health Development for the implementation of infection prevention and control
measures at the local level, and the Philippine National Police and other government agencies and concerned stakeholders for identification and management of close contacts. The leading cause why people not want to vaccineted is because the issue about dengvaxia with president Ninoy, the dengvaxia controversy was a health scare in the Philippines caused when the dengue fever vaccine Dengvaxia was found to increase the risk of disease severity for some people who had received it. Public fear over a controversial vaccine against dengue might be eroding people’s trust in jabs to prevent COVID-19, Malacañang said on Tuesday. President Rodrigo Duterte in 2018 stopped use and sale of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia in the country after its maker admitted that it could cause severe symptoms of the mosquito-borne disease in some cases. Recent surveys reveal that most Filipinos are hesitant to get COVID-19 vaccines, about 3 years after the Dengvaxia issue. To better understand how COVID-19 works, it will help to first look at how our bodies reacts, how it copes and fight with illness. How COVID-19 vaccines work? According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, different types of vaccines work in different ways to offer protection. But with all types of vaccines, the body is left with a supply of “memory” T-lymphocytes as well as B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight that virus in the future. It typically takes a few weeks after vaccination for the body to produce T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes. Therefore, it is possible that a person could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 just before or just after vaccination and then get sick because the vaccine did not have enough time to provide protection. Sometimes after vaccination, the process of building immunity can cause symptoms, such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are signs that the body is building immunity.

The game turned terrific when Troublemakers from junior high school was up 1-0 early, but their Sako Esports from senior high school counterparts rallied and won the next-second game to take the upper hand. LIFE IS A JOURNEY ENJOY THE RIDE! MOISES PANGUELO Even before the pandemic happened in the Philippines, biking has already been one of the famous recreational activity not only among the youth but also the elders as it serves as a source of exercise. Bicycles have been a mode of transportation since the early 19th century and it quickly become very popular. Through the decades, the design has shaped them, developed them for better performance, and enhanced them so we can reach high speeds, according to The Fact Site. “Siguro mga 9-10 yrs old ako unang natutong mag bike . Naulit lang ako mag bike last 2018 after almost 4 yrs naiingit ako sa mga dumadaan sa harap namin at sa mga nakikita
ko kaya naimpluwensyahan ako magbike.” Prince Mark Castañeda, one of the pioneers of BarasBaras Cyclist Club in Baras-Baras, said in an interview. (I was 9 or 10 when I first learned how to ride a bike. I tried riding again in 2018, almost four years after I learned. I felt jealous every time I see some cyclist passing in front of our house.) Prince Mark, together with his friends, travelled through biking almost every week. Their experiences has encouraged other youth to also try biking and join their group. When asked, Castañeda said that the most memorable place he reached while biking was in Baguio City. Baguio City is located at the Province of Benguet in Northern Part of Luzon. “ Nung last 2019, nagride kami
papuntang baguio, naging memorable to dahil yung mga una kong nakasama nung nagsisimula palang ako magbike sila rin yung nakasama ko sa pagakyat ng Baguio.” ( Last 2019, we travelled to Baguio. I became memorable for me because the people I was with when I started biking, are also the people I went with in climbing Baguio.) He also said that he was inspired to try biking because of his idols in that sport. He men-
tioned one of his idols in the interview which is Peter Sagan, a Slovak professional road bicycle racer. Nowadays, a day won’t pass by without a cycler riding in the roads of Baras-Baras. It has become of the pastimes of the youth and also the elders who lives in the barangay. It is great that people found a way to ease boredom in times of pandemic, however, cyclers are constantly being reminded to practice safety protocols to avoid any risk of danger and medical injury.
