Sailors, Friends, and Family -

On behalf of Bayview Yacht Club, I am honored to welcome you to the to the 98th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race, the longest consecutively run freshwater race in the world. We are excited to put (most) of the challenges faced due to the pandemic behind us, offering two courses - the Cove Island Course that has us sail in Canadian waters and the Shore Course, and welcoming back our Canadian friends. There is one friend, however, who will be joining us in spirit only this year. Luiz Kahl meant so much to our sport, to our Race, to sailors across the globe, and to me. He was a friend and a mentor, and I will never forget when he actually asked if he could be the Mackinac Race Chairperson for my year. That one simple act goes to show his love of the Race and his unwavering dedication to our sport. Speaking of dedication, 2020’s Chairperson, Chris Clark, accepted the request to step in after Luiz’s passing to chair this year’s Race. We also have Melissa Wenzler back in the role as the Race Administrator and it’s truly amazing to see what this powerhouse duo has accomplished in lockstep with the Mackinac Race Authority, with the support of the Bayview Mackinac Foundation, and with the help of countless volunteers. To say that the Bayview Mackinac Race is in good hands is an understatement. Thank you. Our goal is to make the Race an unforgettable experience on and off the water and Bayview’s General Manager, Matt Prost, has taken this to heart. He has made multiple trips up to the Island to work with Mission Point Resort and numerous other local businesses and officials to ensure everything is set up to run smoothly. From the Race Chairman Welcome Sailors and Race Fans to the 2022 Bayview Mackinac Race! It is time to brush the pandemic off and do some sailboat racing. I want to welcome our Canadian competitors back; we have missed having the entire sailing community on the race course. Personally, I am excited about sailing the Cove Island Course. It really feels like we are returning to normal. I have done the Bayview Mackinac Race at least 35 times, and there have only been two times we have not been rafted in the harbor or had an awards party on the island. This year we return to normal on the island; rafting is permitted for up to 170 boats in the harbor and the rest on the coal docks. We will have the Island Awards Party on the Great Lawn at Mission Point Resort. Mission Point is an old friend for most of us, having finished countless races on the island's east end. We are happy to be back! Normal on the island is a bit of a new normal, as many things are post-pandemic. There are newly expanded environmental regulations for the use of the harbor. Please review the NOR and SIs for the details. Per the race's contract with the DNR, if a competitor violates the Clean Harbor Initiative, they may be banned for at least a year. While on the island, be respectful of people and property. We are guests on the island, sharing it with hundreds of other tourists. This race is dedicated to Luiz Kahl, a true friend and incredible supporter of yacht racing. Luiz's sudden passing this year has left an impossible hole to fill. Hopefully, Luiz will be able to look out for us this year and provide us with “Chamber of Commerce” conditions. This one's for you, Luiz!

Whether you’ve flown your “LZ” flags, paused for a moment of respect while on YachtScoring.com, or have been inspired to start checking things off your own bucket list after he left us so suddenly last year, there’s no doubt that Luiz Kahl continues to impact all of us in the sailing community. His reach goes from the Bayview Yacht Club bar to this Mackinac race and literally across the world. Luiz Kahl was a sailor, a race administrator, a character of remarkable good nature and the consummate volunteer. One anecdote to that effect: When 2022’s Bayview Commodore Lynn Kotwicki was running for her current position, Luiz called her and asked to be the chair of this race. “Most people take some urging to agree to doing it. Not Luiz,” Commodore Kotwicki said. “That one selfless act is the epitome of his dedication to our sport, to Bayview, and to this race.” After Luiz passed away at the end of September, BYC Member Chris Clark agreed to step in and lead the team of dozens that make this race possible. At the press conference in June for this year’s event, Chair Clark said he approached his own race management taking inspiration from Luiz. Like many sailors, Chair Clark can tell story after story of Luiz’s good humor, love of sailing, and passion for off-the-water fun. “Luiz and I have sailed an untold number of miles together, and shared untold bottles of wine, always red,” Chair Clark said. “I miss Luiz a lot and wish he was here.” Luiz passed away on Sept. 25 at the age of 60. Born in Houston, Texas while his father was in graduate school there, Kahl and his family members returned to their native Brazil when he was an infant. They lived in Campinas in the state of Sao Paulo for two decades before moving to Buffalo, New York in 1981 where the family owned a boat called “Business,” that sailed on Lake Ontario. After college, Luiz’s work took him to Toledo, Ohio and then Detroit. In 1995 he joined Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit and became an active racer and invaluable volunteer. He was the 2005 Bayview Mackinac Race Chair along with this year’s, a two-time assistant chair, the 2017 chair of the club’s nominating committee and chair of the 2007 National Offshore One Design regatta. Kahl volunteered for countless hours of local race committee work and regatta administration. With a cap on his head, a twinkle in his eye and possibly a rum drink in hand, members could often socialize with him at his beloved Bayview clubhouse where he was always eager to provide wise counsel about event management, website design, and other sailing-related matters. On the water, Kahl crewed on dozens of boats, winning numerous events around the country. On the Great Lakes, he sailed in Mackinac Races on Lakes Huron and Michigan, the Trans-Superior Race, and countless weekend regattas and weekday club races. He competed on yachts in the Caribbean circuit including the Miami-to-Havana Race in 2016, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, the BVI Sailing Festival, and the Rolex International Regatta. In Europe, he completed in the famed Fastnet Race and Cowes Race Week. From wherever he was, he always sent photos to his mother and other family members saying, “Check this out.” Local sailors have stories they’ll remember and retell for decades about Kahl, including one about Kahl’s everlasting optimism. He was part of a Thistle team competing in the Detroit Regional Yachting Association’s one-design event at Crescent Sail Yacht Club. His team finished a few points out of first place. Kahl, with his trademark grin, shared that unlike the winners, his team would still be popular.“ No one hates you when you’re second,” he said, a phrase used to this day by those who sailed with him that weekend. 4

In 2006, Kahl combined his yacht racing experience, software coding skills, and event management work. He launched Yacht Scoring, a regatta management platform that grew to include some 400 events in 2019. The company became the leader in online, real-time sailing event management for scoring, registration, and communication. Yacht Scoring is used by regattas around the world, impacting thousands of sailors each year. In addition to Bayview, Kahl was also a member of the Storm Trysail Club in Larchmont, New York, where he served on the board of governors from 2008-2009, and the Royal Ocean Racing Club, in London. He was the executive director of the US-IRC Foundation from 2008-2011 and served as the director of the Southern Ocean Racing Conference beginning in 2007. After Luiz passed, hundreds attended a funeral mass at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms and a Memorial of Life at … where else … Bayview Yacht Club. It was livestreamed on Facebook so that family, sailors, and other friends around the world could be part of it. So many people shared funny and touching stories about Luiz. “I was lucky enough in the early 90s to have him on a small boat because from that point on he sailed on big boats,” said BYC Member Doug Scheibner, cueing the crowd to yell “Big Boat Luiz,” an affectionate nickname for Kahl. Emcee Adam Hollerbach recounted sailing the Annapolis-Newport race with Luiz on a nasty, windy day when Luiz saved him from washing overboard when a big wave hit the bow. “There aren’t many people who can say, ‘there was one moment when there was a guy who saved my life,’ but that was the moment for me, and that was the guy Luiz was,” Adam said. “I will always remember that.” As messages came in on Facebook in Portuguese from friends in Brazil, Luiz’s sister, Cristiana Collins, translated them for the crowd celebrating Luiz’s life. Then Luiz’s brother, Gui Kahl, spoke. He shared that Luiz’s family hadn’t realized Luiz’s role in the sailing community nor the depth of respect for him. “I had this vision of Luiz having like four friends,” Gui said, to much laughter from the crowd in the hundreds. “I never knew this life he had.” Luiz’s memorial event is archived on Bayview Yacht Club’s Facebook page. Sail on, Luiz. We miss you, and this race is for you.

From the Mackinac Race Authority Greetings sailors and race fans, As I write this, it is mid-May and boat yards are buzzing with activity as people prepare their boats to be launched. With everything that has transpired over the past two years, anticipation is high that 2022 will be remembered as a great year for sailing. A lot has happened since our 97th Mackinac Race, including the passing of our 2022 Mackinac Race Chairman, Luiz Kahl. Besides founding Yacht Scoring and being an active promoter of our race, Luiz wrote the program we use to handle registration, scoring, and everything related to the Bayview Mackinac race. As you sail up to the Island, please remember Luiz and all he did to make it easier for us to do this race. Also, a very special thanks is due to Rob Bunn for the work he has done to pick things up and keep going after Luiz's passing. When you toast Luiz, make sure Rob gets a drink (or at least a sincere thank you). As I write this, there are over 170 boats registered for the 98th edition of the Bayview Mackinac race, and I am so happy to extend a special welcome back to our Canadian sailors that are back after COVID closed the border. If you run into Chris Clark, please thank him for stepping up to replace Luiz. Chris was our race chairman in 2020, a year that was full of challenges for all of us and as it turned out, the Bayview Mackinac Race was the only distance race held in 2020 after COVID entered the global conversation. We are incredibly proud that we were able to get our race off and continue our streak of running a race every year since 1925 in spite of wars, recessions, and now pandemics. Chris, along with our army of volunteers, made that happen. It's especially important to note that there have been zero COVID outbreaks tied to our race, so thank you to all sailors and race fans who acted responsibly in Port Huron, on the water, on the Island, and stayed home if that was the right decision for them to make. Let's hope we all continue to make good decisions and respect our hosts in Port Huron and on Mackinac Island. We can't do what we love without them. The Mackinac Race Authority has worked hard to reduce our carbon footprint over the last couple of years by reducing the amount of printed materials. While we no longer print scratch sheets and race programs, all this information is readily available on the Bayview Mackinac website. I encourage you to review them, download them to your computer, tablet, or phone for easy reference, and enjoy not having to sort through a soggy, disintegrating scratch sheet while trying to figure out who that boat is "over there." Straits of Mackinac Society 2021 Old Forts The Straits of Mackinac Society was founded by Bayview Yacht Club to honor all Mackinac Race Committee personnel who have served on the committee for 15 years. Members of the Straits of Mackinac Society are known as "Old Forts": our heroes who have worked in the background with such dedication for so many years deserve proper recognition. Without their untiring effort, there would not be a starting cannon, or any race at all. Race Committee Person of the Year Jeff Maier A native son of the Detroit area, Jeff Maier has been involved in the sailing community for a great share, if not all, of his life. Jeff started out at Detroit Yacht Club where his family owned an Island 36', Ghost. There are those who remember Jeff sailing a dinghy in the lagoon at the DYC when he was a child, under the watchful eyes of his parents, Bob and Judy. Eventually, Jeff grew and matured, and he was allowed to sail the Bayview Mackinac race with Bob and a mostly family crew continuing to sail the Bayview Mackinac race until he and his wife, Mary Ann, moved from this area to Kalamazoo. Jeff's interest in home brewing beer had led to an opportunity to work for Bell's Beer, thus the move westward in late 1998. But Jeff wasn't done with sailing. Indeed, DYC and Lake St. Clair's loss became a great benefit for Gull Lake Yacht Club ('GLYC'). Located in Richland, MI, GLYC was far closer for Jeff to travel after work or on weekends. In fact, it was such a good fit that Jeff rose through the ranks at GLYC and was Commodore of that club in 2010 and 2011. Jeff also found the time and opportunity to move up the steps needed to become certified by U.S. Sailing as both an Area (Regional) Race Officer and an Area (Regional) Judge. Jeff continues to return to the Detroit area to participate in the Bayview One Design Regatta as well as the Bayview Mackinac Race. Having both sailed the Bayview Mackinac Race and having also served on the race committee for that race, he brings a unique perspective to the race and is greatly appreciated by everyone - racers and race committee - associated with this great event. We are pleased to recognize Jeff as the 2022 Bayview Mackinac Race Committee Person of the Year. 11

Hall of Fame Trophy The Bayview Mackinac Hall of Fame Trophy - aka the “Old Bear Trophy” was donated by the Bayer Family in honor of the first recipient: Com. Charles M. Bayer who was affectionately called “Old Bear” by his friends and family. The trophy is perpetual and is awarded to select individuals in honor of their support, dedication, and outstanding contribution to the success and continuation of the Bayview Mackinac Race. Nominees for the Hall of Fame Trophy must have raced at least 10 BYC Mackinac Races and brought honor to themselves, the Race and Bayview Yacht Club. The election process is held in August every year and the selection committee is comprised of Grand Rams and Old Goat Committee members. If you would like to nominate someone (living or deceased) for this honor, please fill out the nomination form available at bycmack.com, and return it to the BYC office before the beginning of the Mackinac Race.

Congratulations to the 2021 Bayview Mackinac Hall of Fame Inductee Com. Michael A. "Grizz" Thompson Mike sailed his first race with his family on the Q Boat Siren in 1958. He raced over 30 Bayview Mackinac Races and 20 Chicago Mackinac Races. He became a Bayview Old Goat in 1989 and is a member of the Old Forts. He served as Bayview’s Mackinac Race Chairman twice and Principal Race Officer (PRO) numerous times, including 6 times on his PT Boat Endeavor II. He served on the Protest Committee almost every year from 1978 to 2005. Mike sailed in many events under the Bayview Burgee including as skipper of Black Magic, the 1981 Canada’s Cup Contender. Mike was the winning skipper in the 1974 and 1985 Richardson Cup and as skipper of the 1975 Congressional Cup effort. Mike built and raced the Tanton One-Ton “Belly-Up” in several Mackinac Races, the SORC and One-Ton Championships from 1980 to 1985. As the Area E North Training Director, Mike was instrumental in enhancing the quality of instruction in Junior and Adult sailing and racing programs nationally. Mike was a US Sailing Senior Judge and was the PRO for the International 50 Foot Association running regattas in the U.S., UK, Spain, Germany, France, Monaco, and Japan. He was also PRO for the Block Island Race Week in ’99, ’01, and ’03. In 1995, when he was Commodore of Bayview Yacht Club, he helped move the starting line for the BYC Mackinac Race to the U.S. Side of the Channel near the Lakeside Park Beach. As a result, thousands of spectators watched from the beach and the race received national press coverage. Mike was also partly responsible for improving communication between RCs and Sailors using VHF Radios on the race course. Mike was awarded the Bayview Yacht Club Member of the Year Award (sailing) in 1981 and Member of the Year Award (non-sailing) in 1987.

From the Old Goats Chair Welcome, Mackinac Racers! The Society of Mackinac Island Old Goats hopes that you have an enjoyable and successful Mackinac Race. Don’t wait until your 25th BYC Mackinac Race to start filling out your Old Goats Society Application Form. This is a Corinthian Sport and your word is good enough for us. Most of us remember our first and last races and years where we did particularly well. Then you need to start filling out the blank years by thinking about the different boats that you raced on in a specific year. After a while you will start to remember how many races you did on an individual boat. Pretty soon you will have it all filled in or be able to contact skippers, friends or family who may be able to help you jog your memory. There is no giant database with all the thousands of crew members who raced on thousands of boats dating back to 1925 when BYC held it’s first Mackinac Race. We have a difficult time keeping track of the thousands of sailors racing in the current year. So, start now to keep track of your Mackinac Race participation so that when you get to Race 25, you will be all set to send in your completed application form (due by September 1st) and be inducted into the BYC Mackinac Old Goats Society. There will be a photograph of all Bayview Mackinac Old Goats, Grand Rams and Double Goats taken on Mackinac Island prior to the Island Awards Party. Look for the Old Goats Banner near the stage and listen for the announcement. We will gather near the Banner around 12:00 Noon. New Old Goats and New Grand Rams will be Officially Inducted into the Society of Old Goats at the BYC Mackinac Awards Dinner in the Fall. Also held that same afternoon of the Awards Dinner is the New Old Goats and Grand Rams Cocktail Party. You will be informed about the details of these events early in September. 20

Old Goats and Grand Rams also receive invitations to Old Goat Luncheons held in the Fall and Winter and the Old Goats Roast held in the Spring at Bayview Yacht Club. All Old Goats, Grand Rams, families, and friends are invited to the Roast for an evening of fun. There is also recognition for those sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac Races AND 25 Chicago Mackinac Races who are called Double Goats. Please contact Chicago Yacht Club directly if you qualify for this award. If you have completed 50 Bayview Mackinac Races, please fill out a Grand Ram Application Form (due by May 1st of each year) found on the Bayview Mackinac Race Website under the “About” tab.
