The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) has long been a holiday favorite, adding vibrant color to homes throughout the Christmas season and beyond. Todayâs newer varieties are longer-lasting and available in a stunning range of colorsâred, pink, cream, white, and even unique shades like lime-green âEnvyâ.
Among our favorites are the PrincettiaÂź series, featuring four beautiful shades of pink that make the perfect gift plant. Here at Bayport Flower Houses, we grow over 25 varieties of poinsettias right in our own greenhouses.
Poinsettias thrive in warm, bright, and humid conditionsâbut dislike cold drafts, darkness, or overwatering. And for that extra festive touch, our design team can customize any of our home-grown poinsettias with elegant bows, glitter branches, wintergreens, ornaments, and moreâcreating a truly one-of-a-kind holiday gift.

GETTING YOUR GARDEN READY FOR WINTER
ESSENTIAL CARE TO HELP YOUR GARDEN REST, RECHARGE, AND RETURN STRONGER
by John Auwaerter, Lead Grower
The air feels a little crisper, the days are a little shorterâand just like that, fall is here. While many of us are busy with back-to-school routines, cozying up our homes, or even starting to think about the holidays, itâs easy to forget about our gardens. But this season is actually one of the most important times of the year for setting your plants up for long-term success. If cared for properly now, your garden will not only survive the winter but also thrive when spring rolls around again. Here are a few key steps to focus on before the frost comes:
Cutting Back & Pruning
Pruning can feel intimidating, but it doesnât have to be. While heirloom varieties of roses, hydrangeas, and other traditional plants require very specific pruning techniques, most modern cultivars are far more forgiving. The key is to remember that plants are preparing for dormancy during the winter. Cutting back excess branches and foliage allows them to conserve energy and strengthen their root systems before the frost sets in.
When in doubt, give us a call or stop by and ask us directly. Weâre always happy to give advice tailored to your specific plants.
Mulching: A Blanket for Your Roots
Itâs easy to think mulch is only for weed control in summer, but in fall it plays an even more important role: protecting the root zone A 2â3 inch layer of mulch acts like insulation, helping to prevent freezing and locking in valuable moisture
If spreading mulch isnât in your plan this year, donât worry you can use fallen leaves instead Rake them into your garden beds rather than hauling them away Not only do they help insulate your plants, but as they break down, they provide natural nutrients for your soil
Fertilizing & Watering
Even though your plants are slowing down, they still need food and water. Fall is the perfect time to give them a âlast mealâ before dormancy. Use either a balanced synthetic fertilizer (look for fall/winter formulas) or an organic option like compost, fish emulsion, or seaweed extract. Just be mindful not to overdo it follow the recommended fall application rates on your product.
As for watering, keep an eye on the weather. While fall typically brings steady rain, there can be dry spells, too. Donât assume your plants are getting enough moisture check the soil and water as needed until the ground begins to freeze.
Final Thoughts
Gardening doesnât stop when summer ends it just changes. By giving your plants the right care now, youâre setting yourself up for a lush, healthy, and rewarding spring. As always, if youâre unsure about pruning, fertilizing, or any aspect of fall garden care, donât hesitate to reach out.
Happy Gardening!
