Nourishing Potential: South County Community Services When families across South Santa Clara County face acute hardship, steady nourishment is the first step toward lasting stability. Through generous community contributions to The Mercury News Wish Book, South County Community Services (SCCS) secured vital funding to purchase essential grocery staples that are rarely available through donations alone, ensuring a consistent lifeline of nutritious food for more than 18,000 neighbors each month across Gilroy, San Martin, and Morgan Hill. That baseline of security provides room for lives to transform — exemplified by Jessica Reed. When readers first met Jessica through Wish Book, she had overcome homelessness to secure a safe roof for herself and her young daughter. Today, Jessica continues her inspiring upward trajectory. After earning her high school diploma as an adult, she has entered the medical field and is building a promising career. Stably housed and thriving, Jessica turned a moment of community compassion into generational self-sufficiency. Beyond feeding roughly 1,800 families weekly and 200 unhoused residents, Wish Book coverage sparked a surge in SCCS website engagement, volunteer sign-ups, and new donor partnerships. By filling pantry shelves, readers didn't just provide meals — they gave determined mothers like Jessica the foundation to build brighter futures.

Connecting Generations Through Story: Santa Maria Urban Ministry For families in downtown San José’s Guadalupe-Washington neighborhood, preserving heritage while opening pathways to education is a powerful, intergenerational journey. Through generous community contributions to The Mercury News Wish Book, Santa Maria Urban Ministry launched Cuentos que conectan — a pioneering Spanish-language literacy initiative developed alongside Santa Clara University and San José State University to empower roughly 300 residents and ensure home libraries take root across Silicon Valley. The heart of the program was captured at its inaugural gathering at MACLA, featuring renowned author Francisco Jiménez. Among the crowd, a young boy proudly carried a handcrafted diorama depicting a scene from Jiménez’s celebrated book Cajas de cartón. Jiménez examined the boy’s work with care, signed the back, and delivered an empowering message on dignity: laboring in the fields is honorable work, and education expands what is possible. Every attending family left with curated Spanish-language books and custom literacy kits — reinforcing the belief that their language and culture belong at the center of learning. Coverage in The Mercury News generated vital regional visibility and galvanized new institutional partnerships with libraries and schools, ensuring local families have the resources and encouragement to share their stories for generations to come.

Mobility, Dignity, and Community: Life Services Alternatives For adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), true independence begins with connection. Through generous community contributions to The Mercury News Wish Book, Life Services Alternatives (LSA) — which supports nearly 100 residents across 16 homes in Santa Clara County — secured an accessible 2018 Toyota Sienna van, opening vital pathways to the wider world. For the 80 residents assisted, the vehicle delivers more than rides; it provides mobility with dignity. Through LSA’s Community Integration Training Program, members rely on the van to reach classes, discover nature and art at Gamble Garden, and build vocational skills volunteering at Animal Assisted Happiness, where they care for animals and give back to the community. Without dedicated, wheelchairaccessible transit, these enriching experiences would simply be out of reach. The impact of The Mercury News feature resonated far beyond daily transit. LSA saw its donation page traffic surge by nearly 120% within a week, helping propel its yearend fundraising from $102,000 to more than $248,000. By investing in this essential van, Wish Book donors didn’t just provide transportation — they helped keep Silicon Valley residents connected, valued, and actively engaged in the community they call home.

Dignity, Purpose, and Parkside Community: Neighborhood Hands Every other Saturday morning at Guadalupe Gardens in San José, community healing takes root through collective action. Through generous contributions to The Mercury News Wish Book, grassroots nonprofit Neighborhood Hands secured vital grant funding to provide $20 cash stipends to unhoused and economically insecure neighbors who dedicate an hour to beautifying the park before connecting at an on-site resource fair. For participants — nearly three-quarters of whom experience chronic homelessness — the program offers far more than supplemental cash. It delivers purpose, earned dignity, and direct pathways to critical social services. Thanks to community generosity, Neighborhood Hands funded hundreds of volunteer stipends, assisting 1,484 individuals across early 2026. The impact of being featured on the front page of The Mercury News on Giving Tuesday transformed the young organization. The spotlight catalyzed an influx of first-time donors and volunteers, enabling Neighborhood Hands to expand its bi-weekly capacity to 225 stipend-supported volunteers per gathering. By investing in this grassroots initiative, Wish Book readers didn't just help clean a neighborhood park — they fostered belonging, validated local neighbors in need, and proved that compassionate community investment creates tangible, lasting change.

The Mercury News Wish Book’s mission is to invite readers to help neighbors in need by supporting local communities and charities in the southern region of the Bay Area. Since its inception in 1983, The Mercury News Wish Book has raised more than $13 million. Each year, from Thanksgiving Day through December, The Mercury News publishes a series of Wish Book stories focusing on special “Wishes” or needs from charities, organizations or local people. Wishes have helped the unhoused people find shelter, jobs and basic needs, raised scholarships to low income families, provide therapeutic care for children with autism, feed families in need, and so much more. By illuminating the work that these organizations provide, we’ve strengthened our connection to the community. The impact of your donations make a meaningful difference to the lives of our neighbors. Thank you for your generous support to brighten the lives of so many in our community and fulfill the wishes one gift at a time.
