NORTH BATTLEFORD–It was an exciting time at the Battlefords Humane Society on June 13 as it celebrated the grand opening of its new facility on the north end of North Battleford, off Highway 4. The facility was named the Jean Walker Shelter and Rehoming Centre in honour of benefactor Jean Walker who donated more than $730,000 to the project. Walker said she donated that amount over 20 years. She said she used to feel sorry for the animals and the staff because of the poor conditions at the old facility, so she was aware of a need to build a new facility. Walker said she some board members talked to her about the need for a new shelter. “So, I started donating then,” she said. “It’s been a long time coming.” Walker said the project was so important to her because of her love of animals “It breaks my heart when I see all these animals looking for a home,” she said. “The place is over-full all the time. Gubbe said the project involved a major undertaking over a period of 10 years or more. “It involved a lot of people doing a lot of work, and a lot of financial donations from various sectors of the community,” he said. Another major donor was the estate of Gladys Milman.
