Why study abroad? Taking a trip abroad is one of the most valuable experiences you can have in your undergraduate career. GALA (Global Academy of Liberal Arts) is a network of partnered institutions around the world providing chances for study, research and work collaborations. You can find a range of opportunities through GALA and there may also be some funding available. See page 14 for more information.
Global Citizenship
You can apply for the Certificate in Global Citizenship, which is an extra-curricular course, designed to expand horizons beyond your subject area through lectures, placements and group work. See page 15 for more information.

Money Matters There are many funding opportunities to help you with the costs of taking a trip abroad.
Will my tuition fee change?
What costs am I likely to incur?
No. Your course and tuition fees will not change if you choose to take advantage of our international opportunities. You will only pay tuition fees to Bath Spa University. No tuition fees are payable at the exchange institution.Â
Costs will vary depending on where you're going. As a budget starting point, factor in the cost of insurance, visa fees, flights, accommodation, as well as food, local transport and social events. It is important to take these into consideration, however, we do have a range of funding opportunities available to help cover some of these costs.
External funding
There are many other ways you can fund your stay abroad. There are a range of part-time jobs, crowdfunding campaigns and external scholarships available to you. These additional opportunities will not impact the funding you receive from Bath Spa. In fact, we encourage you to look into these external opportunities as you may be able to access more funding that way.

Will I lose my funding from Student Finance England? No. You’ll be entitled to keep all your current student loans and grants from Student Finance England. In fact, you may even qualify for additional funding. If you receive funding from a source other than Student Finance England, make sure you always check the terms and conditions.

Semester Abroad We haveover 50 partner universities worldwide. During your second year as an undergraduate student, you could spend one semester studying at one of them. Doing a semester abroad is an excellent opportunity to experience education in a different country, immerse yourself in a new culture, and learn a new language.
To be eligible you need to... • •

achieve a 2:1 average grade in your first year of undergraduate studies, apply by Friday 5 February 2021 to be able to study abroad for one semester in your second year of undergraduate degree, apply for the same or a similar subject at our partner university that you’re studying at Bath Spa.

What support is available to me?

To help you with the process, our Go Global team will: • provide you with semesteronly accommodation during your second year at Bath Spa University, • offer pre-departure and returners sessions, • offer continuous one-to-one coaching and advice, should you need it.
Most partner universities teach in English. However, in some countries, such as Mexico, Japan and Taiwan you’ll be expected to have some knowledge of the language. Additional language classes are usually provided by our partner universities.
The placement will not impact on your final grade, however, students who go abroad are more likely to earn higher degrees. You’ll need to complete the equivalent of 60 Bath Spa University credits during your semester abroad, but no actual grades will be transferred – the placement is pass or fail. Students are responsible for obtaining official transcripts and ensuring they are received by the Go Global team before credits can be successfully transferred.

Summer Schools If you'd like to gain enriching international experience, but would rather go abroad for a shorter period of time, then attending a summer school is the perfect choice for you. Summer schools provide the opportunity to engage with your subject area in a fun and different way, while experiencing a new culture and learning environment.
Where can I go to do a summer school? In the past, our students have taken part in summer schools organised by our partners in China, Denmark, Hong Kong, Mexico, Sweden and others. Our 2021 summer schools will be announced during the spring term through the student email newsletter and on social media.
Is there any funding available? If your summer school lasts for at least three weeks, you may be eligible for the Outward Mobility Award. Please check the Funding pages for more information.

Research Abroad You can also choose to carry out some of your research abroad. If it’s for your dissertation, your coordinator will be your first point of contact. They’ll be able to guide you through choosing an appropriate location to carry out your research. In the meantime, our Go Global team will help you apply for funding, assist you with predeparture information and organise returners’ sessions. These are designed to help you communicate your experiences not just for your dissertation but also to a wider audience and on into your career.

"The main reason for visiting Kenya was for a research trip. I wanted to have an insight into the locals' way of working within textiles, production and sales. To immerse myself into their lifestyle and collate first hand research for my final project by photographing the wildlife, people and landscapes. Also experiencing authentic Kenyan markets was an incredible opportunity for inspiration and research into colour, texture, materials and pattern."

Work experience abroad Erasmus+ Traineeships You can gain valuable experience by spending some time working abroad in Europe during your summer holidays or in the year after you graduate with Erasmus+ Traineeships. What funding is available? To help you cover the costs, there is funding available of €470/€520 per month, paid in two instalments (when you arrive at your placement and when you return to the UK). There is also an additional €20 per month available for students from low-income households.
What are the placement requirements? Your placement must be a minimum of eight weeks, maximum 12 months. You’ll need to work for a minimum of 15 hours a week.

"I chose to do a placement abroad because I love to travel and it has always been an ambition of mine to work in another country and learn another language. My favourite thing about living and working in Valencia was meeting people from all over the world and now I have friends in Australia, New Zealand, The USA and many other European countries. I feel much more confident in my public speaking and presentation skills. I even gave a presentation in front of the entire office staff, including the owner of the company, which was daunting at first but I received positive feedback, which was great!"
Professional Placement Year (PPY) abroad Even if your motivation is to travel, undertaking a PPY abroad will add significant value to your CV. With a PPY, you can work anywhere in the world, gaining degree level work experience between your second and third year. Future employers will be able to see your degree has been boosted by the incredible experience and skills that you’ve gained during your year abroad. This will really make you stand out from the crowd! You also have an entire year to network which could lead you into a career abroad. Apart from all the professional benefits, you’ll be able to explore a new country and a new culture, learn a new language and gain skills in international communication vital in any multicultural environment. Being on your own in a foreign country will push the boundaries, showing that you’re not afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

What funding is available? You can apply for a reduced maintenance loan and there is funding available through the Erasmus+ Traineeship grant if your placement is in the EU. There is funding available through the Outward Mobility Award and International Travel Award.

Global Academy of Liberal Arts GALA The Global Academy of Liberal Arts (GALA) was established by Bath Spa University in 2014. Since then, we have supported dozens of students —both undergraduate and postgraduate — to visit GALA partners for placements, summer schools, field trips and conferences. GALA is a community of universities from across the world that collaborate on teaching and research, and provide extra opportunities for students to visit other institutions. If you’re interested in global issues, such as the global economy and politics, aid and development, sustainability, other countries and cultures, and international business, then The Certificate in Global Citizenship is for you. It’s an extra-curricular course that you can take alongside your degree for all three years of your undergraduate studies. You don’t need to have any background experience, just enthusiasm and interest in developing your understanding and building your skills as a global citizen. The Certificate is awarded in addition to your degree. You start in your first year, and it does not change your degree title or your final results. Rather, The Certificate complements your studies by adding an international, interdisciplinary perspective to your studies which will build your confidence, transferable skills and make your CV stand out from the crowd. Founded in 1993, Seian University of Art and Design is located in the city of Otsu in Shiga Prefecture. It offers a range of 21 four-year courses in the art and design field, provided through 6 departments, each focusing on a particular area. Thanks to the small class size, tutors can really get to know their students, who can enjoy Seian’s the comfortable and friendly atmosphere on campus. To apply, you should have a strong interest in learning Japanese, with some knowledge of the language. *Please note that Seian is only available for Year 2, Semester 2 placements
The Tec de Monterrey’s Santa Fe Campus is located on the western edge of Mexico City, in an area which is probably the fastest growing business district in Mexico. The campus was established in August 2001. Since then, it has grown to be the home of more than 3,600 students. The university offers a range of cultural and athletic activities free of charge to all students. To apply, you need to have a conversational level of Spanish.
