Supporting the Community The Artisan Home Tour supports the Housing First Minnesota Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds and remodels safe housing for Minnesota’s homeless, veterans, and others in need. Getting There VEHICLES: The Artisan Home Tour is a selfguided tour using your own vehicle.

PROVIDED ITEMS: Booties and a bag to carry your shoes with you. If visiting more than one home, we encourage you to reuse your tour booties.

DIRECTIONS: Find driving directions to homes on our website or in the mobile app.

PARKING: Please observe “No Parking” and other signage, and consider carpooling. Refrain from parking in front of mailboxes, garbage cans, and driveways.

When a young family began dreaming of building a “Swedish Country Home,” their dreams ran deeper than aesthetics. He grew up in Sweden. She in Minnesota, a state known for its Scandinavian heritage. So, to them, the notion of “Swedishinspired” evoked a feeling of familiarity. Of comfort. Of home.

TRANSLATING SENTIMENT INTO A BLUEPRINT When pulling up the home’s winding drive it all appears so effortless — but it required years of collaboration to complete. The team, including Bill Costello, CCO of Streeter Custom Builder, Charlie Simmons, founding principal of Charlie & Co. Design, Ltd., and interior designer Linda Engler, founder of Engler Studio Interior Design, as well as the family themselves, trusted each other implicitly. As part of their initial research, this core team poured over old family images to help inform a few architectural details. One research finding? An obsession with mood-lifting natural light.

Scandinavians in general really appreciate natural light because half of the year it never gets dark, and the other half it never gets light. So, when you have the ability to create and sculpt environments that take advantage of light, you certainly want to do that. From the architectural choices to the interior design decisions, the team walked a tightrope between modern and traditional. Ultimately, they arrived at an understated transitional style, which strikes a wholly unique tension through a mix of textures, hues, eras, and influences. It’s not predictable, yet it’s oh-so approachable. That’s why an antique clock fits so well alongside a plush, modern ottoman.

INTEGRATING SWEDISH ELEMENTS While the goal was to veer from the expected, the team arrived at a turning point midway through the project. “My gut was that we’re not pushing this enough into Scandinavian,” Engler said. “I thought, ‘the architecture needs a little push. And the interiors need a little push.’ I feel like we’re kind of tiptoeing with it.” So, they went back to the architectural renderings and mood boards to make a few shifts, including swapping the black window exteriors for Cadet Gray in the Marvin Ultimate collection. “The homeowners shared that Sweden’s all about wonderful grays,” Engler said. “Cadet Gray gives us just some rough punch of outline with a window that makes a statement in a very subtle, diplomatic way.” The staircase presented another area for stepping up the Swedish influence. Sitting opposite the entryway, it runs three stories with floorto-ceiling windows as a backdrop, drawing guests inside. To keep the staircase light and airy, they opted to soften its black metal spindles with a white plating, detailed with a sweet, subtle Swedish design.

DESIGNED TO EMBRACE NATURE “One of the things that was really important for our client was to feel at one with nature,” Simmons said. “There’s a reason why somebody buys a lot of land among rolling horse fields.” From how the home was situated on the property, the landscaping that harkens back to Sweden with its hilly pastures, to the use of expansive glass all throughout the house to easily soak up the surroundings — the team never lost sight of the client’s desire to bring the outdoors in. These homes will provide safe, stable housing for individuals and families at risk or experiencing homelessness the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. Originally built in 1889, this 136-year-old Dellwood home on the shore of White Bear Lake received a luxurious remodel befitting its status as one of the area’s “dream homes” due to its charming historical appeal, 1.5 acres of lakeside property, and elevated European style. • After living in the home for a few years, the family of seven was looking to enhance the property by refreshing the exterior and creating a more functional interior. The new Colonial Revivalist architectural design elevated the homes existing character.

• Designed by Carl Gage, an architect known for The Bakken Museum and his work with the Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families, this home was originally built in 1937 for Frank and Alice Warren, a prominent couple in Minnesota’s mining, banking, and education sectors.

• Luxurious Italian marble countertops and backsplash and a gorgeous mix of tile and terrazzo flooring enhance the kitchen’s beauty and durability. Period-appropriate appliances were chosen to reflect the home’s character, while globally sourced antique light fixtures honor its original era.

• The existing kitchen felt small and out of sync with the home’s historic charm. To restore balance and authenticity, the team seamlessly integrated elements from the rest of the house. By reintroducing original details like poured terrazzo flooring and vintage sconces at the kitchen entry, the remodel not only honored the home’s history but elevated its function for modern living.

Located just a block off Lake of the Isles, this turn-of-thecentury Colonial home received an impressive refresh befitting its stately style, with design choices that reflect modern taste while blending seamlessly with the classic architecture. • Over 100 years old, this home was facing a variety of maintenance and space issues. The old dilapidated covered entry roof was replaced with a much statelier barrel-vaulted roof, structural columns, and timeless brick.

• The lower level presented a different set of challenges the team had to get creative to solve — namely, fitting a bedroom, bathroom, bar, TV room, laundry room, mechanical room, and storage into the 600-square-foot foundation.

• The addition of a small but impactful twofoot bump-out towards the backyard accomplished the clients’ ideal kitchen, which is now dressed up with white cabinetry, tile, and a sparkling waterfall quartz island that contrasts beautifully with rich walnut cabinetry and darker wood floors.

• Everything from the metal entry roof to the stunning antique glass bar mirror was designed to reflect the homeowners’ preferences while enhancing the classic style of this 1907 home.
