oday’s homes aren’t just designed to look beautiful—they’re designed to support the realities of everyday life. As many households balance demanding work schedules, family life, and evolving lifestyle needs, Rochester homeowners are placing high value on spaces that reduce daily friction, improve organization, and make routine tasks more efficient. “The benefit is simple,” says Jeremy Keller, owner of Keller Homes. “These spaces absorb the daily mess so the living areas stay livable.”

If you’re in the process of designing your own new build, builders recommend focusing on layout, storage, and flow first. Beauty should come second. “Once the functional needs of the space are addressed, aesthetic details such as materials, colors, lighting, and finishes can be incorporated to create a cohesive and visually appealing design,” says Logan Bigelow, service manager at Bigelow Homes. “The most successful homes are those that not only look great but also make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.” Here, Rochester-area builders break down the functional spaces every home needs and the musthaves local homeowners are asking for right now. Mudroom Mudrooms are one of the best examples of functional spaces that make daily life easier. Serving as a dedicated area for storing everyday essentials, a well-equipped mudroom with lockers, a bench, and hooks stops the whole house from becoming the landing pad for shoes, backpacks and purses, sporting equipment, keys, and mail, says Keller. In addition to providing convenient storage, says Bigelow, “a mudroom helps keep the rest of the home clean by containing

dirt, snow, and wet outerwear before they are tracked throughout the house”—a necessity for Minnesota homes. Walk-In Pantry A walk-in pantry can significantly improve the functionality of the kitchen. By providing ample storage for food, small appliances, and household consumables, countertops are kept clear and valuable cabinet space is freed up in the heart of the home. “The additional storage capacity also makes bulk purchasing more practical, reducing shopping trips and making it easier to organize and manage household inventory,” says Bigelow. Ideally, the walk-in pantry should be placed behind the mudroom to optimize the flow between the garage and main living spaces, Keller adds. “The transition from garage to kitchen [is] where the pileup happens,” he says. “We address it by designing the flow so you come in through a mudroom, past the lockers, and the pantry is right there to drop groceries before you ever hit the main living space. Get that path right, and the rest of the house stays calm.” Dedicated Laundry Room A cramped closet with a washer and dryer just doesn’t cut it

when it comes to optimizing the functionality of a home’s laundry area. Instead, a dedicated laundry room gives homeowners space to collect dirty clothes, wash them, and fold them in one convenient location. “By centralizing one of the most frequent household chores, you can streamline daily routines while keeping noise and visual clutter confined to a single area,” says Bigelow. “It can also provide valuable storage space for cleaning supplies, tools, and other household essentials.” Storage & Organization Upgrades Every room in a home can benefit from storage and organization upgrades that have a big impact on how efficiently a home functions on a day-to-day basis. Some of the most valuable upgrades include built-in shelving and cubbies, custom closet systems, walkin pantries with pull-out organizers, and garage organization solutions. “These features help maximize available space while ensuring that everyday items have a designated place,” Bigelow explains. Flex Spaces In the conversation about functionality, flex spaces may be one of the most underrated features of a home. Although they don’t serve a specific purpose, they are becoming a more significant part of new-build layouts as “families seek homes that can adapt to changing needs,” says Bigelow. A home office, workout room, guest room, study area, and craft room are just a couple of ways this blank canvas space can be transformed to support a homeowner’s lifestyle.

A look at the Housing First Minnesota Foundation’s growing impact

or more than 30 years, the Housing First Minnesota Foundation has partnered with Minnesota’s homebuilding industry to create safe, dignified housing for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. What began as a mission focused on building homes for those in need has grown into a statewide movement powered by Minnesota’s housing industry. Today, that mission is stronger than ever. 2026 has been a defining year for the Foundation, not because the mission has changed but because of the number of lives being changed through housing.

A Growing Need for the Foundation’s Work

The Foundation’s community build projects reflect both the

growing need across Minnesota for larger-scale housing solutions and the remarkable ability of Minnesota’s housing industry to respond to those needs statewide. Two of the Foundation’s projects are set to be completed this fall, serving those in need in both the Twin Cities and St. Cloud. In Chanhassen, Hope House is almost complete. As the only teen crisis shelter in the southwest metro, it will provide a safe place for youth to begin their path toward healing. In St. Cloud, Avivo Village will serve single adults experiencing homelessness in 48 individual sleeping pods, with access to communal spaces and supportive services. As housing needs continue to evolve, so does the Foundation’s work. Looking ahead, the Foundation is expanding its reach to

new populations through projects focused on serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence, female veterans, and families experiencing homelessness. The Foundation’s recently announced partnership with 360 Communities will create Lewis House, a 50-bed, apartment-style shelter that will provide safe, trauma-informed housing for hundreds of women and children each year.
