Meet our Dance Instructors
HEATHER GOLDMAN has been involved in the Chicagoland dance community for over 35 years. For the past 30 years, her passion has been instructing and shaping developing dancers and performers. She has experience in teaching all ages and all genres. Her strengths are in preschool age classes, advanced tap, ballet technique, modern movement, jazz, lyrical and musical theater. Heather has choreographed musical performances for several local groups including Elgin Summer Theater, U-46’s All District Summer Musical, Elgin Community College and Children’s Theater of Elgin. She is a past company member and choreographer for Midwest Dance Collective. Heather has been on staff at the Barrington Park District for over twenty years teaching dance, early childhood and a variety of summer camps. Heather is delighted to continue to share her experience and enthusiasm with her students at the Barrington Park District.
AMY NELSON is excited to share her passion for dance and focus on continuing growth at any age with the Barrington Park District! She grew up dancing in Arlington Heights and at John Hersey High School followed by receiving a dance scholarship to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where she completed a dance minor in 2013. Amy focuses on continuing to grow her own skills and knowledge which has led her to various continuing education classes and workshops, including the Nan Giordano Certification Program and Yoga Alliance RYS 200-Hour Certification. Her favorite styles are Ballet and Contemporary. She looks forward to dancing with each of her students this year!
CHRISTINA PATTRAS is eager to be a new part of the Barrington Park District as a Dance Instructor! Since she was a little girl, Christina has absolutely loved the way in which dance aided in her self-expression and built up her confidence. She has previously taught dance at another park district but is beyond excited to bring her love of dance to Barrington. While she finds beauty in every style, she has a soft spot for both poms and hip-hop. Being part of the Poms Team in school was one of her top dance memories, and hip-hop was the style that got her truly invested in the art of dance! In her free time, you can find Christina going to the gym, practicing yoga, volunteering with an animal rescue and spending time with her family, boyfriend and friends.

Reality-Based Self-Defense for Teens & Adults
AGES: 16 YEARS AND UP
Have you ever worried what you would do if you were the target of criminal violence? Could you protect yourself or the ones you love? If the above questions have ever been a concern, you will find both the skills and understanding with this training!
This program is tailored to busy individuals that do not have time to commit to formal marital arts training. It is a reality-based self-defense system blended with the sciences of anatomy and sports physiology.
All training is done with the following assumptions:
• Your attacker(s) are bigger, stronger or have weapons.
• You are already being attacked (and your options to get away are gone).
It is a simple, safe and devastatingly effective program using intuitive movements that anyone can do regardless of physical ability. It is slow paced with minimal stress. Students will learn to accurately target vulnerable structures and areas of the human body, build mental sight pictures and muscle memory – all with the goal to recall and use when it’s most needed.
No prior martial arts training is required.
This class is taught by Sensei Michael Christesen with over 30 years of martial arts instruction that includes Shotokan Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Japanese Jujitsu and Reality Based Self-Defense.

HEAD COACHES ALWAYS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED!
As our programs grow, so does our need for coaches. The more coaches we have, the more teams can be formed and the more each individual child can participate!
Job Description: The coach should be a sincere, caring individual who can share a few hours a week for practices and games. He/she should also have some knowledge of the sport, serve as a positive role model who encourages good sportsmanship, be safety conscious, have patience and enthusiasm, and most of all, make sure everyone is having a great time!
Benefits: Is there any better feeling than knowing that you will be rewarded throughout the season as the kids learn from you as well as spending time with your child and being a positive influence on your whole team? If that isn’t enough, each head coach will receive a team plaque.
Youth League Coaches’ Meeting: All volunteers will be required to attend a coaches’ meeting on 11/18, where we will give you some guidelines and an informational packet that will help you while coaching your Park District team.
To Volunteer: Fill out a Coaching Application form available at the Fitness and Recreation Center front desk, or online at www.barringtonparkdistrict.org. If you have any questions, please contact Kent Hengels at (847) 304-5273 or khengels@barringtonparkdistrict.org.

All of our programs are designed to bring together or strengthen your group, and are tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. We believe that participants absorb more when they are physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally involved in the learning process. Our trained facilitators engage groups in activities that allow the participants to take ownership of their learning. Each program allows time for the participants to discuss the experience and relate the learning outcomes back to “real world” situations.
Teams Challenge Course: A variety of problem-based initiatives awaits the team as they are given challenges that might use ropes, cables, platforms, boards or a 12-foot wall. All challenges require teamwork from every member in order to accomplish the goal. Individual strengths are highlighted and the small group size allows for participation by everyone. These challenges take place on or near the ground and require focus, cooperation and trust. Over 20 stations are spread throughout the wooded trails.
Cooperative Games: Learn team-building skills while playing fun, active games. Cooperation, communication, strategy and good sportsmanship are stressed. Great for younger-aged groups!
