Transforming an existing office space with strategic upgrades in Downtown Asheville

This 2,981-square-foot renovation across two floors aimed to enhance operational efficiency and communication by incorporating updated private offices, conference rooms with glass fronts, and advanced technological systems. The project was designed to create a more functional and secure environment, aligning with the company’s commitment to providing a contemporary workspace for its employees.

Innovative Logistical Solutions for Seamless Construction

Navigating the challenge of material delivery in a confined, occupied space, the project utilized a strategic approach by temporarily removing the exterior glass curtainwall. This solution enabled the smooth transport of essential materials, including metal studs, sheetrock, and owner-provided furniture, ensuring timely and budget-conscious project completion while minimizing disruptions.

Cost-Effective Design Adaptations

A revised mechanical design was implemented, resulting in significant cost savings of $50,000. This efficient HVAC solution optimized the space’s functionality while delivering substantial financial benefits, demonstrating a commitment to both performance and costeffectiveness.

A dynamic renovation journey in an active campus library

The project involved transforming an empty space behind the reception area into individual offices and a state-of-the-art crafting studio dedicated to 3D printing. The studio required two exhaust hoods to handle the burning plastic, and careful infection control measures were implemented to protect valuable computers and books in the adjacent library. The library itself was reimagined with a flexible swing space and classroom, maintaining functionality while still being in use by students. Despite the noise-sensitive environment, the team successfully executed selective demolition, installed fresh finishes, and made crucial safety upgrades—all while ensuring minimal disruption.

Creative solutions for a challenging renovation

This renovation project faced a series of unique challenges, including the unexpected arrival of Hurricane Helene during construction. With no potable water available, the team had to come up with creative solutions to ensure the comfort and safety of everyone on-site, including water bottles and portable restrooms. The project had to be paused for two weeks, causing delays that spilled over into finals week for students, adding to the complexity of the work.

Rebuilding stronger & transforming McCallister Gym from storm damage to state-of-the-art

The McCallister Gym is entering an exciting new chapter with a fullscale renovation designed to restore and elevate the facility after hurricane storm damage. The basement level has been completely gutted, walls removed, and all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems stripped, to make way for a dynamic, reimagined space. The transformation includes the installation of a new two-stop elevator for improved accessibility, along with upgraded electrical systems and the introduction of air conditioning for enhanced comfort.

The redesigned basement will feature modern athletic coaching offices, versatile classrooms, a high-performance weight room, specialized treatment rooms, and expansive men’s and women’s restrooms. Upstairs, the first floor will also see improvements, with a refreshed lobby and new mechanical systems integrated into the main gym area. This renovation isn’t just about rebuilding, it’s about creating a stateof-the-art environment that supports athletic excellence, learning, and wellness for years to come.

MISSION HEALTH MISSION BREAST CENTER RENOVATION

Operational Cutting-edge Infection Control

Expanding women’s imaging and diagnostic services in Western North Carolina

Situated near Biltmore Village in Asheville, this 13,000-square-foot, second-floor women’s breast imaging and diagnostic services suite at Mission Breast Center is one of the premier treatment facilities in Western North Carolina. The space underwent a large-scale renovation to modernize the center, which now includes five mammography rooms, four ultrasound rooms, three treatment rooms, a waiting area, a gang restroom, and a new two-stop elevator. This enhanced facility is helping to expand Mission Health’s healthcare offerings for women in Western North Carolina.

All work was completed in an active medical building, meaning special infection control measures were required to mitigate construction impacts on high-risk patients and the Center’s daily operations. The project team engaged in extensive planning efforts and conducted regular check-ins with hospital staff to ensure safety for all throughout the project. Precautions included separating active construction areas from operational spaces with temporary walls and fire-retardant plastic up to the ceiling deck. Additionally, an anteroom was fitted with a negative air machine to maintain an air pressure measurement of -0.01 w.g., which was always monitored by a manometer.

MICROTECH KNIVES

Sharpening the edge of innovation

Microtech Knives, a premier American manufacturer of highperformance pocket knives, recently completed a transformative renovation and infrastructure upgrade to support its rapid growth and evolving advanced manufacturing requirements. This strategic investment enhances both operational capacity and environmental control across the production environment.

The scope of work includes substantial MEP enhancements to the existing manufacturing space, enabling the integration of cutting-edge equipment and systems. Mechanical upgrades feature the installation of high-efficiency chillers, air rotation units, and mist collectors—designed to maintain optimal air quality, temperature stability, and particulate control throughout the facility. These improvements ensure a cleaner, safer, and more consistent production environment.

To accommodate new equipment demands, the gas piping infrastructure was expanded, providing robust support for increased utility loads and future scalability. A key component of the project is the construction of a dedicated 300-square-foot building addition, purpose-built to house new electrical switchgear. This addition not only increases power capacity but also improves operational efficiency and system reliability.

Rebuilding the Riverfront and restoring New Belgium’s Asheville brewery

New Belgium Brewing’s Asheville facility experienced severe hurricane damage, and because our team was already on-site for a canning line reconfiguration, we were able to immediately expand into full remediation support.

The storm brought four feet of water and mud into both the production facility and the on-site water treatment plant, requiring extensive demolition and replacement of sheetrock, insulation, and specialized cooler wall systems. Significant electrical damage added complexity, especially with the City deferring inspection authority to electrical contractors. While New Belgium handled equipment-specific replacements such as motors, our team focused on structural, electrical, and interior recovery efforts to stabilize operations.

To restore essential utilities, a temporary electrical panel was installed for the water treatment plant, and we flushed the brewery’s tanks to help the City clear bacterial contamination and restore clean water service. Looking ahead, New Belgium plans to increase sustainability by generating their own CO₂ on-site and eliminating their external tank.

DUKE ENERGY HICKORY OPERATIONS CENTER RENOVATION

A strategic renovation to support regional energy operations

This critical renovation project included several upgrades to ensure long-term performance in a mission-critical environment. The facility’s 12,000-square-foot office space and 4,000-square-foot crew room were reimagined to feature open work areas, a spacious breakroom, private locker rooms and dedicated training zones, while infrastructure upgrades like new rooftop HVAC units and strategic electrical panel relocations enhance performance.

A 4,000-square-foot pre-engineered metal building was added to the site to serve as a protective shed for vital tools and equipment. The project team utilized drone technology to map the shed’s location, helping coordinate construction safely without disrupting access to materials.

Due to the nature of this facility, the site had to remain open to provide critical supplies to Duke Energy’s crews. Our team permitted and set three jobsite trailers and a restroom trailer for Duke employees to use during construction, allowing them to remain onsite close to equipment and materials required to repair powerlines. Enhanced safety methods were implemented during the demolition phase, including containment plans and air monitoring, to ensure the safety of the employees onsite.

FIFTH THIRD BANKSPARTANBURG

Modern retail bank with strategic urban coordination

This ground-up construction project delivered a new branch bank in the heart of Spartanburg, designed to support a digital-first, collaborative banking experience. The branch embraces a modern, open-concept layout.

Key features include open huddle areas, a relaxed lounge with a coffee bar, private offices, a staff kitchenette and lounge, upgraded restrooms, an after-hours drop box, and an exterior walk-up ATM. Instead of traditional elements like teller counters and enclosed offices, the design prioritizes flexibility and customer choice, offering a transaction bar and dynamic meeting spaces for a personalized banking experience.

One of the project’s most complex challenges involved the installation of a new sanitary tie-in, which required carefully coordinated traffic control across three active lanes of city traffic and minimal disruption to ensure both public safety and project efficiency.

LINVILLE GOLF CLUB RENOVATION

Linville Golf Club’s off-season makeover

Barringer Construction is leading a transformative off-season renovation at Linville Golf Club, revitalizing key member amenities across the property. At Eseeola Lodge, the existing dining room is being converted into an open-air patio beneath the original roof structure, supported by new shoring, deck, and column systems, along with a new exterior bar, upgraded kitchen equipment, and refreshed interior finishes. At The Fountain amenity center, the team is completing a full kitchen renovation, adding a new walk-in cooler/freezer, installing a grease trap, creating new outdoor seating, and reworking the roofline for improved performance. With the scope defined, the real challenge lies in the schedule: all work must be completed within a tight October–March off-season window, just before the club reopens.

Harsh winter conditions, snowfall, freezing temperatures, and limited site access, pose significant risks to quality and timing, especially for concrete and masonry activities. Leveraging extensive experience with seasonal operations and private clubs, Barringer implemented a proactive plan that anticipates weather impacts, optimizes work sequencing, minimizes delays, and ensures the project stays on pace despite the mountain winter.

Transforming a historic space into a vibrant brewery hub in the heart of Asheville

With taprooms across the country, globally recognized VooDoo Brewing Co. expanded its presence to Asheville, NC, transforming an existing restaurant into a lively brewery destination. This 2,700-square-foot interior renovation reflects the brand’s eclectic style while offering an open and inviting environment to support the taproom’s vibrant, communal atmosphere.

To create the open & social environment, significant structural changes were required, including the removal and re-support of key loadbearing walls. This involved strategic engineering solutions that helped maintain the building’s integrity while achieving a modernized freeflowing interior. The resulting space prioritizes customer interaction and maximizes seating, elevating the overall brewery experience.

For the design aspect VooDoo was seeking a balance between visual appeal and long-lasting durability. Material selections like sealed concrete floors and a custom concrete bar top offer both industrial style and resilience. These choices align with both VooDoo’s bold aesthetic & requirement that the taproom can withstand.
