Situated near Biltmore Village in Asheville, this 13,000-square-foot, second-floor women’s breast imaging and diagnostic services suite at Mission Breast Center is one of the premier treatment facilities in Western North Carolina. The space underwent a large-scale renovation to modernize the center, which now includes five mammography rooms, four ultrasound rooms, three treatment rooms, a waiting area, a gang restroom, and a new two-stop elevator. This enhanced facility is helping to expand Mission Health’s healthcare offerings for women in Western North Carolina.
All work was completed in an active medical building, meaning special infection control measures were required to mitigate construction impacts on high-risk patients and the Center’s daily operations. The project team engaged in extensive planning efforts and conducted regular check-ins with hospital staff to ensure safety for all throughout the project. Precautions included separating active construction areas from operational spaces with temporary walls and fire-retardant plastic up to the ceiling deck. Additionally, an anteroom was fitted with a negative air machine to maintain an air pressure measurement of -0.01 w.g., which was always monitored by a manometer.

Comprised of six acute care hospitals and several satellite care sites, the Mission Health network aims to provide Western North Carolina with comprehensive medical care that speaks to the unique needs of the region. Asheville Cardiology Associates is one of its busiest care sites, providing patients with a collaborative, individualized plan of care across an array of cardiology specialties.
With patient satisfaction at its forefront, this interior upfit of this space transformed an outdated practice into a warm, welcoming environment. The work included renovating the existing cardiology office to include a new 3,300 square foot lobby and check-in area that better reflected the practice’s customized approach to patient experience. Updated finishes including new flooring and millwork were added throughout the remaining 21,000 square feet of exam rooms, nursing staff areas, and doctor offices, and fresh paint helped to complete the fresh new look.
To ensure the practice could remain operational at full capacity, all work was completed in six different phases, which included phased construction of the exam rooms, to accommodate patient travel paths and minimize disruptions. This approach resulted in the practice experiencing no impact on patient care or revenue during the project.

Northeastern University, a private research university, expanded its Charlotte footprint to the booming South End neighborhood to create a new, state-of-the-art facility for its Nursing Program students. This 40,000-square-foot, first-generation upfit across 1.5 floors at The Line is designed to attract students by promoting student engagement and providing hands-on learning opportunities.
Not your average University
This high-end space is not only unique in its design with curved classroom fronts, a rooftop patio, and a show-stopping monumental stair; it also provides several unique learning environments for students. Medical simulation labs with interactive ‘dummies’ allow students to engage in real-life patient treatment situations. Patient rooms with oneway glass let instructors monitor and provide feedback on simulated patient interactions, while high-tech classrooms and collaboration spaces encourage student-employee interaction. All these design elements help to further the school’s experience-powered approach.

Atrium Pineville recently underwent a major HVAC upgrade with the installation of a custom-built, 75-ton air handling unit (AHU) on the roof. Designed to improve efficiency and patient comfort, this 19,000 CFM unit was strategically added to share the load of the existing AHU serving the patient floor.
Executing this project required precise coordination and structural modifications. Crews saw-cut the existing framework to create new duct drops—one above the mechanical space and another directly over the busy nurses’ station. To minimize disruption, the project team occupied the nurses’ station for a week, carefully removing the ACT ceiling, modifying the structure, routing new ductwork, and restoring the ceiling upon completion. A 275-ton mobile crane was brought in for the lift, stationed at the facility’s main entrance during a planned Saturday shutdown.

The C.W. Williams Community Health Center has been serving the Charlotte community since 1981 by providing access to high-quality, comprehensive healthcare regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. Armed with a mission to better serve its patients, the organization built a new, state-of-the-art medical facility to replace its aging main campus.
The new health center’s aesthetic elements are just a portion of what it brings to the Charlotte community. This center will be able to provide the same high-quality medical offerings as any other state-of-the-art facility, with the addition of innovative technology like negative pressure rooms for adults and children, a robust medical laboratory, and fully equipped consultation rooms.
This new building was constructed in place of the original medical center, requiring vast preplanning to ensure the safe demolition of the structure. Our team developed a meticulous site safety plan to address issues, including a small site footprint beside a busy intersection, worker parking options, and coordination of heavy equipment and machinery.

Offering comprehensive IVF services in a boutique, spa-like
Reproductive Specialists of the Carolinas is a boutique practice offering comprehensive reproductive health and fertility services. Situated in midtown Charlotte, this project included a complete demolition and full interior up-fit to create a state-of-the-art medical facility featuring a spa-like waiting area, private exam rooms and offices, as well as an in vitro fertilization (IVF) lab and medical gas room.
The build-out of the IVF lab and med gas room was a highly intense process that included extensive planning and testing to ensure all medical requirements were met. Strict air quality guidelines required products and materials installed in the space to have a VOC content lower than 5mg/L.
The client wanted the firm’s unique, patient-centered approach to shine through in their new space. The project’s high-tech components are met with high-end design elements to achieve a spa-like environment with features including wood grills, comfortable furniture and warm tones throughout.
