From Steve Trigar How my life in pigeons began: As a young boy my parents brought me up to be a bike rider. My Dad had been a good rider and his dream was for me to follow him in the sport. At the time my parents worked in a factory in Collingwood and one day they caught a pair of pigeons at the factory and brought them home in a cardboard box. They called me into the kitchen and said we've got you something. The box was on the table, I went to open it and something moved inside the box. I jumped back in fright but then gained enough courage to look inside. There was a white saddleback cock and a blue chequer hen. I was facinated with the colours particularly the green and purple on the neck of the hen. I was hooked. The bike was soon relegated to second place and Dad was not happy. However, he did build me a small loft and the birds soon bred. Whilst watching my birds flying I noticed a flock of about 60 birds flying really well. I followed them and they landed around the corner. I then used to sit on the gutter outside that house watching those birds fly. One day a man noticed me there and asked “do you like pigeons son?”. That was Barry Harkom and he invited me in. I soon became part of the Harkom family. Roy Harkom became my mentor and he was the best pigeon man I ever knew. I still miss Roy, I doted on everything he said, how lucky was I to have such a mentor. My Family of Pigeons: I was very lucky to get a few good pigeons straight away from lofts I went to and with the help of my great mentor I had success very quickly. I created what I called the Freak line that were a combination of Jack Murrowood's, Lindsay Datson's, Brian Street's and a VRPU stray. Over the years these birds have won over 200 races. They have produced 9 VHA 1st Federation winners including a Derby Fed winner, 2 Produce winners, a Bird of the year and numerous other Federation placings. I have introduced other blood into these birds but most still have the old Freak line in them. The Freak pigeons have made it easy for me, they must be superior and very clever to break before others to still win with me being a short flyer compared to most. I was always very careful with my pigeons and looked to the future. My philosophy was “Be kind to your pigeons and they will be kind to you”. I have to say the pigeons have been extremely kind to me.

Last but certainly not least I thank my wife Robyn and my family for putting up with pigeons, pigeons, pigeons.
From Stephen Kearsey: It is disappointing that another excellent flyer and a true character is leaving our sport. I have known Steve since the early 1970’s, and in that time he has proven himself to be a dedicated pigeon man who loved his pigeons, the birds were always sent in the best condition and because of this care he had many top results and many winners . Steve was a dominant flyer in the North West section of the Victorian Homing Association and the Ivanhoe Centre. On Saturday afternoons in the Diamond Valley Centre as we watched the results scroll down everyone would be looking for the name S. Trigar as a benchmark. Steve loved racing the Young Birds series and all races up to 700 kilometres, Steve did not breed many pigeons each year, he was not a big team flyer but every pigeon that he entered he expected to win, and they did more often than not. On a personal note, Steve was a good friend to my father, Arnold, and would often visit Dad at home and even later in hospital when they would talk for hours about pigeons. I am sure that the birds in Steve’s sale will leave their mark in the lofts of those who purchase them and we wish Steve all the best for the future.
From Fred Sheean: Steve Trigar has been the best fancier that has ever flown at the Ivanhoe club. If he had lived in the south east section of the VHA he would have dominated the aggregates over many years. Even though he competed at a disadvantage to most VHA members he was able to win many federation positions including 9 fed wins with 2 wins in the prestigious Produce. I would often be amazed at the ability of his birds to feature in federation races when no other birds from flyers in the northern sections of the VHA were able to gain a fed spot. His pigeons are exceptional at performing in adverse conditions and the tougher the conditions the better they go. The races across Bass Strait are always a test of a pigeon’s stamina and ability to navigate and his pigeons have excelled in these races. I cannot recall him ever missing a fed place in those races. Steve has not competed in races beyond 350 miles for a number of years for various reasons but prior to that his birds always performed well and won federation placings and would continue to win if he raced. Any flyer who has been fortunate enough to obtain some of these birds in recent years will attest at their ability to win at all distances. I am sure that any flyer buying these pigeons will have similar success.
From Ed Sheean: It is now over 30 years since a young Steve Trigar first raced his pigeons at the Ivanhoe Homing Club after serving apprenticeships in the yards of the great flyers at the time such the Harkom Bros, Clarrie Nelson, Jack Murrowood and countless more. Steve soaked up pigeon know how going from loft to loft, hence Steve has always known success from the start. Steve ultimately became a Life Member of the club, is a Trustee and past President. Steve's family of pigeons go back to the “Freak hen” line that dominated from the start. Over the years he has added a lot of imported birds that he has been able to acquire but many still have the old blood in them. His racing record at the club is second to none. To win 9 1st Federation plus multiple other positions from where he lives in the VHA demonstrates his great record. Thankfully for other Ivanhoe members he chose not to race beyond 350mile in most years as it upset him too much to lose his “friends” as he calls the birds in a tough distance race where the attrition rate could be high. However, when he did race distance or flew from Tassy he was just as potent as in the short and middle distance races. His birds won at all distances fast or slow velocities. Steve dominated that much it got to the stage where he brought a shopping trolley to the presentation night to carry home his trophies. He was the catalyst for us introducing having one plaque noting all multiple wins for a flyer. Steve lived and breathed pigeons and practically lived in the pigeon loft. Ultimately that became his downfall health wise developing pigeon lung. He has tried to persist with the birds in the last couple of years as he loves them so much but he has come to realise his only hope of reasonable health is that he must get out of pigeons.

Note: When reading through this catalogue you may find a number of anomalies that don't look right with regard to the parents of birds. The years of the progeny rings may be the same as the parents or may be even earlier. Steve had a propensity to use any ring he fancied regardless of the year or Federation. If he wanted to race a bird he would then register the ring. The year on the ring often is no indication of how old the bird actually is. Additionally, in his breeding books he often just wrote the “pet� name of the bird and not the full ring number. Hence with a few of the birds he could not back track to the exact number (Yr/Fed/No) even though he knows what the breeding of the bird is.
