PICTURING HOYLAND IN THE 1950S This exhibition is inspired by a unique collection of historic photographs from Barnsley Archives and Local Studies. The photographs were taken by Ordnance Survey as part of a post-war mapping project, starting in May 1954. They were taken to record survey points, known as ‘Revision Points’ (or RP points) around Hoyland, Rockingham, Elsecar and Hemingfield. The images show fascinating glimpses of life in the post-war years, including Anderson shelters in gardens, prefab housing and even hay waggons bringing in the early harvest. To celebrate the 65 year anniversary of the images being taken, staff from Barnsley Museums have recreated some of the shots, with help from local people, and the Elsecar Heritage Action Zone.
