The Cooper Gallery Trustees Auction 2022 by Barnsley Museums

We are proud to be hosting the 3rd fundraising auction to raise money for the Cooper gallery collection. Artists from across the region, including Graham Ibbeson, Malcolm Whittaker, Julie Pratt and Jan Barnsley have kindly donated 80 pieces of work consisting of glass, jewellery, ceramics, prints, photos, sculptures. We are also delighted to include 4 paintings by the late Eric Hill as a memorial to this great local artist. A raffle will also be drawn, prizes include Wentworth Woodhouse £25 voucher, signed book by Milly Johnson, and a £20 voucher for the Cooper Café and the Old George. We are so grateful to all the artists, makers and donors who have contributed and a huge thank you to our auctioneer for the evening, Pierre Maciag and compere Ian McMillan. The entire proceeds from the auction and raffle will go towards the Cooper Gallery for the conservation, preservation and upkeep of the collections and building. Thank you for your support. IAN MCMILLAN SELECTION OF BOOKS We start this auction with a lot that has been donated by our great patron, supporter and friend, Ian McMillan. Ian's connection with the gallery goes back a long way. I remember him performing with Yakety Yak many moons ago. Then he came back after going solo and enchanting various school groups with the interactive poem Mr Moore. The children's voices would ring around the gallery with this tale of a schoolmaster with hair like a sweeping brush and they would carry the words out with them and back to school. He is a great favourite with the staff and his presence always lights up a room. In fact, I bet he is doing it now as he kicks off this auction with a selection of his books which he will sign for the winner.

ALBERTO GIACOMETTI “CAROLINE” - PRINT

This print is taken from an oil painting by Giacometti that is in the collection of the Tate. She was part of the Barnsley Library picture loan scheme that existed until January 2007. Pictures could be taken out on loan much the same way as books could. You would take them home and hang them up for 3 months before they had to be returned.

The library charged £1.50 for a print and £3.00 for an original. The picture still has the loan label on the back which tells us that it was last returned to the library on the 23 February 1994.

TWO LARGE CUT OUT CYCLING SHIRTS

These 2 oversized cut out cycling shirts were presented to Experience Barnsley Museum in 2018 from the local Asda store. The front of the Town Hall saw the start of the second stage of the TDY that year and these were presented by Asda to the events team at Barnsley Council who organised and oversaw the event. They feature 3 signatures on each of them and they were signed at the local Asda store.

The signatures are:- (left to right on the photograph) Christian Prudhomme – French journalist and Director of the Tour De France. Thomas Voeckler is a French former road racing cyclist, who competed professionally between 2001 and 2017 and won the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire. He is considered one of the most prominent French riders of his generation. Gary Verity – Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive 2008 – 2018. He was instrumental in bringing the Tour de France Grand depart to Yorkshire in 2014 and championing the Tour de Yorkshire.

4 COAL NOT DOLE, WOMEN AGAINST PIT CLOSURES EXHIBITION 6 PLATES & TABLECLOTH MADE FOR EXHIBITION AND COAL NOT DOLE BOOK This is a very interesting and unique lot that has come from an exhibition at the Experience Barnsley Museum called Coal not Dole. The exhibition ran from the 3 March to 1 June 2014. The exhibition marked the 30 year anniversary of the 1984 /85 miners strike and told the stories of the women who started the campaign group “Women Against Pit Closures” Included in this lot are 6 plates that were printed with images from the exhibition, a large red fabric piece that was the table cloth under the plates. The cloth has the logo of the exhibition in the centre and there is also a hardback copy of Coal not Dole, a book of photographs by Michael Kerstgens.

5 BARNSLEY LIVE FESTIVAL

GOODY BAG OF T-SHIRTS/ CD AND PROGRAMMES Barnsley Live is a one day, multi venue, indoor festival of music and comedy that has become a fixture in the life of the town. It has become so successful that the team behind organising it won the Proud of Barnsley award for Charity Fundraising Team in 2021. The organisers of this event have kindly donated a goody bag to this auction. It has limited edition programmes from the last 3 years, T-shirts and a CD in a magnificent Barnsley Live tote bag. GOODY BAG OF T-SHIRTS/ CD AND PROGRAMMES

Seventh Son was put together by brothers Kev and Bri O’Shaughnessy in 1980. The idea for Seventh Son was hatched in the King George Hotel in Barnsley, which in the 70s and 80s, was the hangout for Barnsley's ‘different’ crowd who listened to the pubs excellent jukebox pumping out Zeppelin, Purple and the Damned etc. Seventh Son became part 'The New Wave of British Heavy Metal’. The band recorded their first demo at Streetlife Studios in Barnsley in July 1982 and recorded their first single ‘Man in the Street’ released in December. It even gained reviews in Kerrang! After a few line up changes Bri is still “rockin” with the band and still riding the rock juggernaut with a sound and fury. Bri is also a much loved member of the Barnsley Museums family and is a familiar sight riding the buggy like a maniac around the grounds at Cannon Hall.

7 CAROLINE PARKES / VINYL UNDERGROUND CAROLINE PARKES PRINT & CARDS PLUS £30 VOUCHER FOR VINYL UNDERGROUND (in tote bag) Caroline is a surface pattern designer working and living in Barnsley. Her work combines hand painted elements digitally manipulated using Adobe Illustrator software. She has created a successful design brand and has produced a successful line of cards and prints depicting vinyl records. This lot includes an unframed print by Caroline and 2 packs of her cards. There is also £30 vouchers for Vinyl Underground and a tote bag. Vinyl Underground Records is a second hand record shop down the Arcade in Barnsley. It is owned by Andrew Shaw, who previously owned VoxPop Records on Oldham Street Manchester, before relocating to Barnsley with his partner Caroline Parkes.

8 HAPY EGYPTOLOGY SOCIETY TALK AND MEET WITH JO FLETCHER TICKETS FOR 2 PEOPLE The Hapy Society was formed in the Autumn of 2019 by a group of keen amateur students of Egyptology living in West and South Yorkshire. The society is named after Hapy, the baboon god, one of the four sons of Horus. Jo Fletcher the renowned Egyptologist agreed to be the Patron of the Hapy Society and this is your chance to attend a lecture by Jo. 10 BARNSLEY YOUTH CHOIR 2 TICKETS TO AN EXCLUSIVE PREMIER PERFORMANCE BYC is a remarkable organisation that was established in 2009 by Mat Wright and Keith Norton. It is a registered charity run by volunteers and seeks to provide outstanding opportunities for young people who live in Barnsley. The choir is ranked 5th in the World Rankings in its category and has won 8 first prizes in some of the biggest international competitions in the world. This lot is 2 x VIP tickets to attend Barnsley Youth Choir’s Concert in July, where they will host the world famous Tuks Camerata from South Africa. Tuks Camerata from the University of Pretoria were crowned World Champions in 2014 and also were Grand Prix winners in 2017, and have an international reputation for excellence. In addition, the concert will also feature a new commission written by the famous American composer, Jake Runestad. This piece has been written especially for this event and has been commissioned by both choirs. Jake is a Grammy Award winner and has also agreed to fly over from the USA to conduct this piece in Barnsley.

11 SIMON DODD MILLING MORNING AT WORSBROUGH MILL Have you ever wanted to know what it takes to be a flour miller in a historic mill?

Well, now is your chance. This lot is an exclusive milling morning for two hosted by our very own miller at Worsbrough Mill, Simon Dodd.

Simon will take you through getting the mill started and then milling your very own flour from start to finish. You will learn the whole process of producing wholemeal and/or white flour. 12 TEGWEN ROBERTS ELDON STREET HERITAGE ACTION ZONE EXCLUSIVE TOUR WITH DR TEGWEN ROBERTS (for up to 6 people) In 2020 one side of Eldon street was awarded High Street Heritage Action Zone status. SUMMER BREEZE – WOODEN HAND PAINTED NECKLACE Red Paper House is created by Amy Hall. Amy makes jewellery and accessories that are inspired by nature. Each piece of jewellery is designed and made in the Red Paper House studio, based in a converted mill space in Leeds. The hand drawn designs are laser cut in the UK from responsibly sourced birch wood. The wooden shapes are hand painted and hand illustrated. This is a handmade honeycomb pendant which is called Summer Breeze.

14 JANINE BARNSLEY HAMMERED WIRE SILVER BANGLE Jan Barnsley is a silversmith who has sold her work at the Gallery for quite a few years. She has always supported us through the years and her quirky, individual pieces have brightened up our shop. Janine makes jewellery in hand forged silver with gold wire detail, oxidised where appropriate. Each piece is individually handmade using traditional techniques to produce unique contemporary designs, whether as a piece from her current design ranges, or a one off commission. She draws her influences from the organic lines of natural forms, combined with a lifelong fascination for the artefacts of ancient cultures and the marks left on them by their makers. Recently Janine has made a range of jewellery, created as a response to the urban cityscapes of her surroundings.

15 ZOE BARBER SILVER AND BRASS BIRD PENDANT Zoe Barber is a Sheffield based jeweller. Zoe’s handmade silver jewellery features details in brass and copper and uses oxidised silver to give a contrasting colour palette. She uses a range of techniques from wirework to weave and twist intricate silver designs or granulation to scatter tiny clusters of silver balls on a piece giving texture to her work. Her surroundings at home inspire her pieces and collections often include details from nature & the lanes and hedgerows of the local area. Zoe has also sold her work at the Gallery for a long time.

16 JESSICA BRIGGS SILVER AND GOLD PENDANT Originally a textile designer, Jessica uses her print background to inform her distinctive jewellery through a series of well-honed techniques. Combinations of patterned and textured silver, selectively fusing it with gold whilst often adding depth through part oxidation. There is an inherent simplicity of both form and function in Jessica's work. Each item is handcrafted by Jessica and thus the characteristics of all aspects of her work are under constant review. The result is an ever-changing range of very wearable jewellery. This piece uses the technique of Keum-boo which is an ancient Korean technique of layering gold leaf onto silver.

18 JULIE PRATT GALACTIC PENDANT – SILVER Julie Pratt is a silversmith based in Barnsley and the gallery has been lucky to have a long lasting partnership and friendship with her.

After art college she soon realised that working with fine metal was her forte and after graduating in 1998, she successfully established her business producing highly individual ranges of contemporary jewellery. She has recently celebrated 20 years in business Much of her inspiration comes from classical themes - the simple line and the circle. She has a huge love of architecture, Gaudi, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Gehry amongst many others and buildings are a great source of design inspiration. The galactic silver necklace is a combination of her two favourite things, lines and circles. Keeping it simple creates a striking timeless piece that will suit any age. Inspired by the many galaxies in our solar system and their relationship with time.

19 LOUISE WOOD SILVER FLOWER STUDS Louise Wood is a silversmith that goes by the name Silver Maiden.

She is based in Yorkshire and makes unique, handmade Solid Silver Jewellery. She takes her inspiration from nature and produces work that uses acorns and butterflies as motifs.

MOZ KHOKHAR PRESSED CERAMIC DISH Moz Khokhar is a Barnsley based potter who draws inspiration from rich colours and patterns in South Asian culture. He uses techniques of extrusion, throwing, coiling and slab building to produce decorative functional and non-functional ceramics. Decorations consist of slip decorations and glazes. He experiments with different techniques to achieve the desired results. All his work is created from his own personal studio in South Yorkshire. Moz recently had two pieces of his work purchased by Barnsley Museums to be part of the historic ceramic collection at Cannon Hall.

VIN ROFFE PENNINE GRIT – PENNINE GRIT STONE & WELSH SLATE Vin Roffe is a local sculptor / stone carver and has shown his work in exhibitions across Yorkshire and others over the years. He is well known to all of us at the Gallery and a great friend and supporter. This is a unique opportunity to own one of his pieces as he doesn’t actively market his work. This is what he says about this piece which manages to be solid and yet elegant at the same time. “What I would like to call it is "Pennine Grit" for a couple of reasons. It is cut from Pennine Grit stone and to me it encapsulates the nature of the area where we live. The base is made of Welsh slate - a fragment from a one time pool table at Elsecar Cricket Club! I was pleased to work with the natural form/fractures of the stone - and with previously made cuts- to make this individual miniature sculpture”

L J B DESIGNS (LAUREN BOWER) TRIO OF CAST PLANTERS – COLD CAST JESMONITE L Jay is a surface pattern designer currently specialising in three dimensional tile design combining digital technology with traditional hand crafted techniques. She is skilled in the use of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign with manual wood working and mould making abilities. She has a raw passion for making, experimenting and innovative thinking as well as an eye for detail. The moulds for these are created on a 3D printer. They are polished and finished and then used to create a 3 part mould. This is quite a complicated process but once done can be used to cast multiple copies. These are cast from Jesmonite, a water based, cold casting medium that is both durable and eco – friendly.

SANDERS AND WALLACE GLASSMAKERS HAND BLOWN BUBBLE VASE - GLASS Andrew Sanders and David Wallace first met at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, Stoke on Trent in 1974. After experimenting in the glass department they soon found a common interest in working with hot glass and blown glass in particular and they started to develop a close working relationship. The pair have been selling their work at the Cooper Gallery for a long time and this piece has been blown and signed by Andrew Sanders. Andrew says about his work:-

“I find endless inspiration in studying pieces of glass from history, the 18th century English glasshouses in particular, when the qualities of lead glass was creating new and exciting design possibilities. It is these qualities that I try to capture in my work” Andrew and David have endeavoured to perfect their glassmaking and design skills for over 30 years and this has culminated in a body of work which is both unique and distinctive.

GRAHAM IBBESON FREDDY NEPTUNE – PAINTED RESIN ONE OF ONLY 2 ARTISTS PROOFS Reserve set at £950 Graham Ibbeson is a son of Barnsley, and his sculptures are loved and renowned worldwide. He has been a supporter and good friend of the Gallery throughout his illustrious career. Graham says this about his work:-

“I have always tried to use humour as a tool to draw people into my work, to enable them to look at themselves through laughter. My work has changed over many years of moving forward through the creative landscape, however, my motivation remains the same. I am influenced by the absurdities of this life and the people who inhabit my world. The small, tiny things that make up the whole picture, hoping as always, that humour opens a path to the truth” ‘Freddy Neptune’ is a painted resin sculpture that illustrates that sense of humour. It is very limited edition and is one of 2 Artist Proofs.

Amanda Greatbatch is a felt artist that goes under the name of Mish Mash Mosh. She says this about her work: “My main focus currently is on expanding my felt and wire collections. Inspired by British wildlife and a love for all things bird, I work from both my own photos, observations and sketches and the wonderful illustrations to be found in old natural history books, to create a range of sculptures which I hope to capture the essence of some of the nature on our doorstep” This cute highland cow shows the diverse ways of creating felt effects and who couldn’t love this little cow.

JAY BIRD - HANDMADE GLASS ON WOODEN BASE Louise Noble went to art college in Barnsley before moving to York. She now teaches but in her spare time she also makes beautiful glass sculptures. She sets them into wooden bases that she stains and dyes to match the sculpture. She seems to be able to give them life and character like this Jay bird. It is alert and proud. She has used a mixture of coloured glass and has picked out details in iridescent dichroic glass.

SUZI THOMPSON HANDBOUND NOTE BOOK IN BAG WITH ETCHED BOOKMARK Suzi is a printmaker based in South Yorkshire working with collagraph, drypoint & relief printing processes to create limited edition prints, artists’ books and a range of hand printed, bound and stitched notebooks.

Her printmaking reflect impressions of the natural landscapes that surround her home and studio; inspired by the accessible open countryside of my local surroundings, British wildlife and flora. This is a beautiful hand bound book which comes in a linen bag. Alongside this is an etched bookmark of a bee and flower.

30 LOUISE ANN WRIGHT HANDMADE ARTISAN WATERCOLOURS Louise Ann Wright is an artist and printmaker based in South Yorkshire. She says this about herself and her work:-

“I have always had a love of pattern and minute detail which finds its way into my work in the form of obsessive drawings, paintings and prints. Fascinated by organic structures such as lichen, fungi and mould; I explore drawing, painting and printmaking through mark making; allowing the finished piece to form organically.” Recently she has started to experiment with making her own watercolour paints. She uses natural materials that she forages for to make pigments. Louise is also looking at starting to grow her own indigo plants in Cannon Hall’s famous walled garden so she can make her own indigo pigment.

JAMES BRUNT WW1 CENTENARY LEAVES SERIES – THREE UNFRAMED PRINTS James studied Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. After working for galleries and a long stint in Arts Development he now lives and works with his family in Yorkshire. James also runs the arts organisation Responsible Fishing UK along with photographer Timm Cleasby. WW1 Centenary 100 Leaves Series This series was 5 years in the making, 2018 saw the final 100 leaves print finished. Here we have three of the series and they are all mounted and ready to frame. MALCOLM WHITTAKER LETTER TO AN EXTINCT FISH – MIXED MEDIA Malcolm was born in Hoyland and came from a family of miners. His parents encouraged his art and he attended Barnsley College of Art and then the Royal College of Art.

Malcolm developed his own very unique response to art and the landscapes around him, choosing to look at what lay underneath the land. His work taps into history and pre-history of our land. It features monuments and land marks such as white horses and standing stones. Malcolm has been connected with the gallery for a long time and is well loved among the staff. He had generously gifted the gallery with his paintings and part of his collection of studio ceramics. This piece is inspired by a letter he wrote asking for information about a fossil of a fish he had bought and shows not only Malcolm's meticulous art work but his skills as a craftsperson as well.

RICHARD KITSON Robin Hoods Bay print Richard paints, draws and makes etchings in his studio in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Kitson is primarily known for his portraiture and figurative works, which often depict family members and friends. In addition to his figurative works, Kitson occasionally paints landscapes and still life subjects. His work is underpinned by a training in academic drawing and life drawing. In 2018, Richard participated in Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’ where he painted Paralympic athlete Kadeena Cox MBE at the Wallace Collection in London. 2018 also saw the opening of Richard’s first solo exhibition at the Cooper Gallery in Barnsley.

She is a professional artist specialising in equestrian art and animal portraiture. Joanne’s passion for equine subjects goes back to her childhood where she spent as much time as she could at her local stables, riding and tending to the ponies. This teamed with a keen interest in art from a young age meant that horses quickly became her main inspiration. This is a mounted drawing of a sitting hare. It is done in coloured pencil on coloured paper.

GEOFF WHITE UNTITLED LANDSCAPE – WATERCOLOUR AND BODY COLOUR This piece was donated by Suze Garner, Geoff White’s niece, to be auctioned in his memory. Geoff died in 2018 having moved back to Penistone from his adopted home of Hexham, where he was a much loved part of the community. He was an associate of the Royal College of Art and worked as a chartered designer (MSAID) for much of that time. The most influential part of his career was implanted at Barnsley School of Art. He worked as a degree tutor in design practice at Newcastle Polytechnic.

He was fascinated with the Yorkshire landscape complete with the creases and wrinkles of the historic industrial age. Mills, towers and chimneys often featured and in later years, wind turbines became a visual device.

ALEXIS BROWN BLISSFUL GRACE – FRAMED PRINT Alexis is a 20 year old digital/ traditional painter from Barnsley. She developed from A-Level to now being in the final stages of her Fine Art Degree at Hull University. Her main aim is to be an exhibition curator. She does traditional painting, however in recent years she has adapted to using more digital artwork. She has been encouraged and supported in her art by friends and family. “Blissful Grace’ is based on my Italian Greyhound ‘Grace’ lying on a sun lounger in summer. It is created in an abstract manner which both distorts and highlights her mannerisms. She is a symbol of joy and that is what I wanted to show. Grace gives those around her laughter and happiness and I am hoping she can do the same with whomever takes home her portrait. ”

He has had several one person exhibitions mainly in London but also at the Civic Arts Centre in Barnsley. This painting he has donated - Hemingfield Colliery (wall) was part of a group of paintings Iain made about Hemingfield Colliery near Elsecar to support the volunteers who are currently restoring the surface buildings to create a tourist attraction. Coming from an abstract painting background, he is attracted to paint things which have interesting shapes and colours although, he can see their historical nature as an added narrative bonus. PAT ABDURRAHMAN SCOTTISH HARBOUR – MIXED MEDIA Patricia Abdurrahman is a local Mixed Media Artist, based in Barnsley. She is part of the Art Buddies group who hold regular exhibitions together. This artwork that Pat has donated to the auction is called ‘Scottish Harbour,’ It is an acrylic painting with a mixture of collage, ink and pastel and is influenced by the work of Mike Bernard.

PAT SABIN ALOUETTE – FRAMED PAINTING ON SILK WITH COLLAGE 'Alouette' is a painting created by Patricia Sabin. She has been painting as an amateur artist for over 25 years in a variety of mediums. This is a framed painting on silk of a vase of flowers and reflections, using fabric paints. Showing underneath are musical notes on paper collage of the song 'Alouette'. The paper and silk have been pasted onto white mount board using Galaria gloss medium. This gives the silk painting stability, durability and the music collage gives an extra dimension.

ERIC HILL MEMORIAL LOTS Eric Hill died last year leaving behind him a large legacy of art. He bequeathed over 400 unframed works to his framer, John, and it is he who has very kindly donated these 4, beautifully framed works to the auction. Anyone who met Eric would remember him; he was one of those people that left an impression. He could give any grumpy old man a run for their money, but despite that, everyone had a soft spot for him and remembers him fondly. When people talk of their encounters with him, it is with smiles and good humour, but by heck, he could be awkward. He developed a style that was utterly unique. If you saw an Eric Hill, you would know it straight away. Those bold lines and blocks of colours, those minimal stick figures that give little information, but you think you know them all the same. There was only one of him and we will all miss him. Eric Hill (1921 – 2021) worked as a painter and decorator for the National Coal Board from when he was 14 years old up until he was 65. For a period of six years in the World War, he served as an Army driver. After retirement he took up painting. Eric painted many scenes including collieries and mining communities, some of which can be found in the permanent collections at the National Mining Museum for England in Wakefield. He was also fond of landscapes, gaining inspiration from the beauty of the Yorkshire countryside and his beloved Barnsley . He won many prizes including one from the prestigious British Watercolour Society. He was a member of many local art societies, such as Art Buddies and exhibited in numerous art galleries, quite frequently here at the Cooper Gallery.
