Photographers Jennifer Robertson and Lynne Fletcher will then lead a gallery tour, explaining the way they were able to capture these very special images.

The Cooper Gallery opened in 1914 and today is a vibrant venue in the heart of Barnsley town centre It is the perfect place to discover art and changing exhibitions. It is home to the Cooper Gallery Trustees’ collection of stunning paintings, watercolours and drawings by artists including JMW Turner, Edward Wadsworth, Vanessa Bell and many more. The gallery has undergone a major re-development and extension thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Discover the breathtaking and exquisite artwork of Ernest Harold Jones, born in Barnsley in 1877. Artist turned Egyptologist, Harold undertook several excavations in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt in the years leading up to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb. On loan from Carmarthenshire Museum are his colourful paintings of tomb interiors, skilful drawings of finds and an archive of family material, on display together for the very first time. Exhibition Talk: Materials and Making: Smithson, Egypt, Barnsley and Me Saturday 4 November
Dr Vanessa Corby, Senior Lecturer in Theory, History and Practice of Fine Art at York St John University, describes her research as an artist and art historian as ‘rooted in a fundamental preoccupation with ‘stuff’; a sensibility derived from the landscape of her childhood spent in the rolling hills, forests, soot, rust and general muck of South Yorkshire’. In this unique talk, Vanessa will discuss her radical re-reading of the work of American artist Robert Smithson (1938-1973), specifically Spiral Jetty, one of the most welltrodden artworks in the history of twentieth century art. In her latest essay, however, Vanessa brought to light the significance of Smithson’s engagement with Ancient Egypt to rethink how this work works for its audiences. Family Festive Felt Decorations
The largest festival of contemporary art in the country launched its inaugural touring programme in March 2017. Artworks by leading international artists commissioned and presented at Liverpool Biennial 2016 are touring to venues in Northern England throughout 2017, with the Cooper Gallery being the final stop in January 2018. The touring programme is supported with National Lottery funding through Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring fund.
Come along as a family to this artist led workshop and create beautiful felt decorations for your Christmas tree.
Through the programme the Cooper Gallery will display the work of world-renowned ceramicist Betty Woodman. Woodman’s international influence is evidenced by the fact that she was the subject of a major retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art 10 years ago, a rare accolade for a living artist.

From George Sandys of York’s Grand Tour to Egypt in 1610 to our own Joann Fletcher’s discoveries, explore antiquities and stories of ancient Egypt. These unique and precious treasures have fascinated our county’s explorers, archaeologists and artists for the last 400 years.

At the Elsecar New Colliery, see our newly restored 1795 Newcomen Beam engine - the oldest steam engine anywhere still in its original location and one of the world’s most important monuments to the industrial revolution. The oldest steam engine still in its original location anywhere, the engine is one of the world’s greatest monuments to the Industrial Revolution. The New Colliery is open 7 days a week to explore throughout the year (except in severe weather), but on our Open Days, you’ll be able to talk to our guides, peer down its deep mineshaft, see inside the engine house and witness the ‘Great Engine’ in action. 11am - 2.45pm. Demonstrations at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. Free - £2 suggested donation - to view engine demonstrations from inside the engine house.

Worsbrough Mill is a 17th Century working water mill set in stunning parkland It is an amazing place to visit, watch wildlife and see history come alive. Discover centuries of milling, learning more about the process, following it from beginning to end. It is a unique opportunity to see history come to life. Marvel at the power of water, be intrigued by clever engineering and see flour being milled in the traditional way. Being one of
the few remaining working water mills in Yorkshire it makes it a truly unique attraction. The on-site millers produce a range of premium organic artisan flours, which are available to buy. The Mill is set within a 240 acre country park and tranquil nature reserve, complete with reservoir, which can be explored on foot or by bicycle, and don’t forget to buy a bag of organic flour to take home!

The water powered mill grinds wheat in the traditional way. Come along and see the milling process in the mill’s 17th and 19th century buildings. The white and wholemeal flours are traditionally stone-ground on a pair of 19th Century ‘’French Burr’’ stones all powered by a cast iron water wheel installed in 1865. Whilst there, why not sample some bread freshly baked on our wood fired oven, made with the flour produced at the mill. 11am - 2.30pm | Free admission

Wildlife Recording Workshops Harvest Mouse Annual Nest Count Sunday 12 November
Working with communities to protect, preserve and enhance the area. The Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP) is a five year scheme running until June 2019, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The DVLP is part of Barnsley Museums, and Barnsley Council is the lead partner working with organisations across parts of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham. The DVLP focuses on the historic buildings and landscapes of the Dearne Valley, working with communities to protect, preserve and enhance the area. You can take part in the DVLP’s workshops to discover more about local wildlife and landscapes in the Dearne Valley, learning new skills. All workshops are FREE to attend and you do not need to have any previous skills or experience. River Dearne Artist Workshops As part of our ‘Art of the Dearne’ project, the DVLP are pleased to announce the commission of four local artists to deliver art projects highlighting the significance of the River Dearne and raising awareness of the river which is at the heart of the Dearne Valley. Join us for our third annual nest count at Worsbrough Mill & Country Park. The site is one of the best areas for harvest mice locally. The session will involve being out on site, searching for discarded summer nests and signs of harvest mouse occupation.
