A Bequest for Barnsley
Saturday 3 March - Sunday 3 June Enjoy a wonderful collection of oil paintings recently bequeathed to Barnsley Museums through the Art Fund. These artworks were collected by a local family and the group includes ‘St Peter’ by Lanfranco, ‘An Introduction into Doubtful Company’ by Robert Hillingford and three excellent still lifes by Barnsley artist Abel Hold. We are delighted to have received this generous gift, and to be able to show the paintings publicly for the very first time. Free admission
Cracking Ceramics!

As part of the ‘Cracking Ceramics!’ project, join ceramicist Karen Thompson and help dress Fairyland in Cannon Hall’s grounds with a temporary display of ceramic fairies, fairy houses and wonderful ceramic objects that bring to life the magic of this enchanting hideaway.
Have you ever wondered what is hiding in the museum store rooms at Cannon Hall? This Spring is your opportunity to find out with brand new displays of colourful, imaginative and skilful ceramics to enjoy.
Using air dry clay, Karen will show you how to model, sculpt and decorate your creations, which after the photo shoot in Fairyland will be yours to take home.
Over the next two years, visitors will be invited to explore changing displays in our new ‘Cracking Ceramics!’ project space at the museum. Our first displays opening in March will look at how potters have used animals to inspire their work. You can use the collections to draw your own artwork or join in our activity days to create a ceramic piece.

CANNON HALL Restoring The Glory
Restoring the glory and revealing the secrets at Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens There are exciting changes afoot at Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens. This idyllic setting has secured earmarked funding of over £2.8million (primarily from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund) to restore and repair important features of the historic Georgian park and gardens. The three year project, running until the Summer of 2020, is being managed by the Parks for People Team, who are based at the Cannon Hall site. The regeneration includes areas such as the lakes, ice-house, gardeners’ cottages, the walled garden and greenhouses. The changes will reveal many of the hidden stories and improve connections to the magnificent Georgian country house that sits at the heart of the landscape, overlooking the village of Cawthorne and beyond. Work will start in February 2018 to restore the lakes within the park, which are the subject of a long running local campaign to improve their appearance, restoring original vistas, improving water quality and supporting biodiversity. This type of work only takes place once every 20 years or so and will be interesting to local people who may want to witness this part of the restoration. Works to the buildings in the parkland and walled garden will begin in Summer 2018 and further updates about this part of the project will be available nearer the time.
Cannon Hall Pears Did you know that the historic walled garden at Cannon Hall is home to one of the oldest collections of pear trees in the North of England? As part of the Parks for People project, there will be a suite of activities taking place to give you the opportunity to find out more about our wonderful pears and their historical significance. Look out for further information in the coming months about planned walks and talks, demonstrations and opportunities to get hands-on. There will also be the chance to learn horticultural techniques such as grafting and pruning.
Get Involved There are many ways to get involved with this fantastic project and help us preserve our heritage for future generations to enjoy. Whether you want to gain new skills, practice existing skills, enhance your CV, meet new people, share your knowledge, or get some exercise, we have plenty of opportunities here to keep you busy. We are currently recruiting garden and horticultural volunteers and history enthusiasts to help us progress some exciting elements of the project. However, we are keen to hear from anyone who would like to get involved!

The Cooper Gallery opened in 1914 and today is a vibrant venue in the heart of Barnsley town centre It is the perfect place to discover art and changing exhibitions. It is home to the Cooper Gallery Trustees’ collection of stunning paintings, watercolours and drawings by artists including JMW Turner, Edward Wadsworth, Vanessa Bell and many more. The gallery has undergone a major re-development and extension thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Liverpool Biennial with Cooper Gallery presents: Betty Woodman Ceramics with Paintings of the Modern Age Saturday 20 January - Saturday 7 April 2018
Betty Woodman (b. 1930, Norwalk, Connecticut, USA, d. 2018) is known for her exuberantly painted ceramic vessels, which are situated between sculpture and painting. Whilst her work references ceramics from many cultures and historical periods, her practice was not bound by tradition, but rather she used it to explore relationships between structure, surface, and colour. The centrepiece of the exhibition is The Summer House (2015), an 8-metre canvas and ceramic art installation celebrating domestic objects. Accompanying it is Aztec Vase and Carpet #1 (2012), which gives visitors a glimpse into Woodman’s influences such as the paintings of Picasso, Bonnard, Matisse and ancient civilisations. This exhibition is part of the Liverpool Biennial touring programme, which brings artworks by international artists presented at the 2016 festival of contemporary art, to six arts organisations in the North of England. Bricks are all around us, yet we seldom stop to look at them or think where they came from. In the past, Barnsley had many of its own brickworks that made the bricks for many of the buildings we see around us. The names of factories and villages were stamped into the brick – this is now the only sign that many of the brickworks ever existed. Join artist Patrick Murphy and gets hands on to help create your own words or phrases that explore 21st century Barnsley. Elsecar is a remarkable village, transformed by the Earls Fitzwilliam into a thriving centre of iron and coal. Few places in Britain have so many reminders of its great industrial age: collieries, ironworks, cottages, a canal, steam railway, schools, pubs and more, all dating back to Georgian and Victorian times. At the Elsecar New Colliery, see our newly restored 1795 Newcomen Beam engine - the oldest steam engine anywhere still in its original location and one of the world’s most important monuments to the industrial revolution. Elsecar Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) is a new three year partnership project between Barnsley Museums and Historic England. One of only a select few places across the country to gain this special status, the Heritage Action Zone recognises that Elsecar has a rich heritage and an incredible story to tell. Developed by the Earls Fitzwilliam from the late 1700s, Elsecar became a bustling industrial village with ironworks, foundries and thriving collieries, often visited by aristocrats and Royalty. Many important historic sites and buildings still survive in the village, but many more are hidden and – in some cases - all but forgotten. Over the next three years the HAZ will be working with the local community to research,
uncover and celebrate the incredible, but often hidden, history and archaeology of the village. The project will also help to realise the village’s potential as part of the region’s growing visitor and tourism economy through enabling the conservation and re-use of historic buildings and guiding plans for future development. There will be lots of opportunities for local people to get involved with the Heritage Action Zone, including guided walks and talks, sharing memories and stories and helping out with archaeological surveys and other activities. Events will be advertised on our website, and at the Heritage Centre.
Great Place Elsecar and Wentworth will deliver a series of exciting cultural activities, inspired by the rich history linked to the fascinating Wentworth Woodhouse and Earl Fitzwilliam’s industrial empire at Elsecar. Great Place will be welcoming the Tour de Yorkshire to our area with a striking pieces of land art.

Sundays 25 February | 25 March | 29 April The water powered mill grinds wheat in the traditional way. Come along and see the milling process in the Mill’s 17th and 19th century buildings. The white and wholemeal flours are traditionally stone-ground on a pair of 19th Century ‘’French Burr’’ stones all powered by a cast iron water wheel installed in 1865.
