Join us for more exciting discoveries from the amazing ceramics collection at the Museum. In‘Makers and Making’, explore materials and decorating techniques, and some of the best known ceramic artists and companies of the last 150 years. Highlights from the excellent Moorcroft collection celebrate how their unique designs are created, and loans from the De Morgan Foundation show how William De Morgan developed his techniques with lustre glazes. Also on show are examples from Doulton, Martin Brothers, Wedgwood, Spode and studio potters Eileen Lewenstein, Barbara Cass and Walter Keeler. We are delighted to welcome on loan a number of pieces by Gordon Baldwin from the Anthony Shaw Collection from The Centre of Ceramic Art at York Art Gallery.

Ian Scott Massie, Northern Soul Saturday 16 February Monday 6 May
A portrait of an alternative England, Northern Soul is artist Ian Scott Massie’s search for the personality of the North. From his home in the Yorkshire Dales, Ian has travelled the length of the North trying to capture the character of the places he finds. The exhibition comprises of paintings and screen prints and is accompanied by a book exploring the show’s twin themes of romance and industry. Free admission. Works for sale.
Pears & Apples: The Botanical Illustrations of Elisabeth Dowle Saturday 25 May Sunday 3 November
Elisabeth Dowle is one of the world’s most respected and talented Botanical Artists. For the very first time her beautiful watercolours of Pears & Apples will be on display in the elegant exhibition rooms at Cannon Hall Museum. The exhibition will showcase Elisabeth’s beautiful illustrations from the Pear & Apple collection. These life size plates were painted from fruits from the National Collection and were used to illustrate “The Book of Pears” by Joan Morgan and “The New Book of Apples” by Joan Morgan and Alison Richards. Elisabeth has been awarded seven Gold Medals by the Royal Horticultural Society
and her work has been published in fifteen books, featured on porcelain, in calendars and on seed packets. Her paintings, one of which was presented to the Princess of Wales, are in many important private collections and institutions, and her “Ribston Pippin Apple” was selected for inclusion in the Highgrove Florilegium. The exhibition comes at an important time in the life of Cannon Hall Parks & Gardens, when indoors meets outdoors. Following a successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Parks for People programme, the gardens have undergone a £2.9 million renovation. Using archive photographs from the Cannon Hall Collection and a specially commissioned film the exhibition aims to make the connection with the Cannon Hall Historic pear collection, walled gardens and parkland. Ian Scott Massie’s watercolour technique has developed over a number of years to embrace expressive colour washes and sharpedged silhouettes. Here he demonstrates how he achieves some of these effects and talks about his approach to creating the pictures for Northern Soul.

The Cooper Gallery opened in 1914 and today is a vibrant venue in the heart of Barnsley town centre The Cooper Gallery is the perfect place to discover art and changing exhibitions. The gallery has undergone a major re-development and extension thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. ‘Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2018’ exhibition, produced by the Royal Observatory, celebrates the most beautiful and spectacular visions of the cosmos taken by astrophotographers around the world. The stunning photographs, seen for the first time outside Greenwich include breath-taking scenes of the Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy and the Running Man Nebula and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing.

Award winning comic book artist Dean Ormston (Black Hammer, Judge Dredd, Lucifer, Superman) & artist Fiona Stephenson are two hugely successful, internationally renowned illustrators. They are also born, bred and based in Barnsley.
In 2018, the competition entered its 10th year, receiving over 4,200 submissions from 91 countries. These extraordinary photos captured all manner of celestial spectacles: moons, stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae and some of the great astronomical events of the last year. An exciting events programme has been developed to support the exhibition, come and see a Cosmonaut space suit and Tim Peakes’ Space Food on loan from the National Space Centre, take part in cosmos crafts and most exciting of all, the silent disco! Pick up a headset and experience the incredible display of photographs in a unique and special way. With two channels to choose from visitors can select playlists that have been especially curated by the likes of Adrian McNally from The Unthanks, Prof. Joann Fletcher and many more.
! W O KAP The Cooper Gallery is delighted to bring together a collection of their artwork focusing on the process when creating artwork from script, first sketches to finished art. The exhibition also aims to tell the story of the early beginnings of our favourite comic book Super Heroes to their on-screen counterparts. Visitors will be able to see an additional display of original art work from the 1940s to present day featuring Batman, Superman, the Walking Dead, Hellboy, Lucifer, Tank Girl, Hellblazer and more by artists such as Jamie Hewlett, Mike Mignola, Charlie Adlard, Duncan Fegredo.

Matthew Shutt: Escape From Reality Sadler Room 22 June - 31 August
Each year we welcome students from Barnsley College’s Art & Design department to showcase their talent. For 2019 this wonderful exhibition is a response to the students’ research into the centenary year of The Land Facilities Act, 1919, and The Allotments Act, 1922. Learners have explored a variety of print processes.
After graduating from the University of Huddersfield, Matthew Shutt began to paint in a hyper realistic style. The subject matter of childhood influences, predominantly action figures will delight visitors who will discover more than at first observed. This masterfully painted exhibition represents a time of innocence and hope, brought to the present through the context of its surroundings.

Saturday 30 March Artist Books on display until 6 April 10am - 4pm New Voices is an Arts Council England funded project. It has the support of three emerging artists in the development of their practices by commissioning each to produce an artist’s book. These books will form a touring exhibition being presented in the Gallery following the 22nd International Contemporary Artists’ Book Fair at The Tetley, Leeds. The touring series of displays and illustrated talks will reflect this quality of intimacy but also open up conversations between artist, curator and audience. Free entry.

In 1919, this former munitions factory re-opened its doors to become the ‘Greatest Tin Factory in the World’. 100 years on, a bright, new exhibition aims to bring together proud stories from past employees, and showcase masterful artwork alongside the glorious tins themselves. Visitors will be amazed to learn how far the tins travelled and of the many household names they supplied. Join us in celebrating the colourful world of Barnsley Canister Company. Find out more about the factory, its workers, the incredible artwork that was designed and displayed on the tins and see the story of this fascinating place and how it impacted on the town decade by decade. Great Engine In Action
Sundays 14 | 28 April | 12 | 26 May 11am | 12pm | 1pm Meet at the Newcomen Engine Elsecar is home to the world’s oldest steam engine still in place, a 1795 Newcomen Engine that pumped water from the New Colliery. On these special 45 minute tours, see the engine in action, tour the New Colliery and look down its Georgian mineshaft.
Elsecar is a remarkable village, transformed by Earls Fitzwilliam into a thriving centre of iron and coal. Few places in Britain have so many reminders of its great industrial age: collieries, ironworks, cottages, a canal, steam railway, schools, pubs and more, all dating back to Georgian and Victorian times. The Earl’s Workshops are now packed with a wonderful range of independent retailers, cafés, an antiques centre and indoor children’s play centre. It is also home to The Ironworks, an exciting event space which hosts gigs, craft fairs and much more. Don’t miss the Visitor Centre with fascinating films and displays about the history of Elsecar.
The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside, sloping hills and ancient woodlands, with plenty of paths and cycle routes to explore and enjoy, including the Trans Pennine Trail. At the Elsecar New Colliery, see the newly restored 1795 Newcomen Beam engine - the oldest steam engine anywhere still in its original location and one of the world’s most important monuments to the industrial revolution. Enjoy a ride on the 1850 steam railway, which runs alongside.

Elsecar has been named a ‘Heritage Action Zone’ by Historic England One of only a select few places across the country to gain this special status, Elsecar has a rich heritage and an incredible story to tell. Over three years, Barnsley Museums are working with Historic England and the local community to research, uncover and celebrate the history and archaeology of the village. The Heritage Action Zone will also help to realise the village’s potential as part of the region’s growing visitor and tourism economy. Worsbrough Mill is a 17th Century working water mill set in stunning parkland Worsbrough Mill is an amazing place to visit, watch wildlife and see history come alive. Discover centuries of milling, learn more about the process and follow it from beginning to end. It is a unique opportunity to see history come to life. Marvel at the power of water, be intrigued by clever engineering and see flour being milled in the traditional way.
Being one of the few remaining working water mills in Yorkshire it makes it a truly unique attraction. The on-site miller produces a range of premium organic flours, which are available to buy. The Mill is set within a 240 acre country park and tranquil nature reserve, complete with reservoir, which can be explored on foot or by bicycle, and don’t forget to buy a bag of organic flour to take home!

Join us as we celebrate ‘National Mills Weekend’! Throughout this annual weekend we will be remembering the fascinating history of our wonderful working water mill through a series of archive photographs that we will have on display. We will also be inviting painters and photographers to join us over the weekend to create their own interpretations of the Mill. Over the two days our miller will also be demonstrating the fascinating method of producing flour using traditional methods. Free event.

Over the past five years the DVLP has focused on the historic buildings and landscapes of the Dearne Valley, working with communities to protect, preserve and enhance the area through various projects such as art, archaeology and ecology.
