TESTING GROUND: SCHEFFERVILLE TERMINAL (2/2)

Participated in a research studio focusing on mining towns located in the northern part of the Canadian province of Quebec. Our team focused on the abandoned town of Schefferville. The mission was to analyze the site according its geology and geography, and to propose strategies that would promote future development. See this project published in the ARPA Journal.

PLATE 1 EXPRESSION OF TIME AND MOVEMENT

The Labrador Trough is a geological formation that is home to a rich, dense concentration of iron ore within the Canadian Shield (a large mass of Precambrian rock that covers most of Canada). Located in western Labrador and Québec, it is a 1,600 km long belt composed primarily of sedimentary and volcanic rock running North-South through the Canadian Shield. The Labrador Trough is 2.3 billion years old and was created by the collision of secondary plates creating intense internal pressure, the distancing of the plates allowing for accumulation of water, the formation of sedimentary rocks due to rich sediments deposited by water, and the intense compressive forces creating large deposits of iron ore.

PLATE 2 NORDICITY

Nordicity is a concept invented by Canadian geographer Louis Édmond Hamlin in the 1960s. This term expresses the quality of being Nordic quantified by a polar index. This index rates the degree of ‘northerness’ of a given territory through the study of 10 criteria, based on human and natural factors. The factors are latitude, average summer temperature, average winter temperature, type of permafrost, annual precipitation, type of vegetation, accessibility, population density, and economic activity. Each criterion can attain a maximum polar value of 100, thus the North Pole would have a theoretical index of 1000 polar value. This method of quantification is an important tool used to understand the shifting identity of the arctic and sub-arctic region over time. In order to comprehend the northern identity of the region of study, the team calculated and compared the index of norcidity of 9 neighboring cities in 1970 and in 2013.

2015 RESEARCH IN TECTONICS CHRISTIAN HOLGER HONG KONG UNIVERSITY RHINO, GRASSHOPPER

ORCHID PAVILION COMPETITION

The structure of the pavilion serves as a 3-dimensional system displaying and framing orchids. The design additive unites are equilateral triangles of 1m side lengths. The equilateral module is mirrored in the roof system. The compositional structural units consists of wooden floor planes, wooden rooftop panels, columns and metallic clamps/junctions. This exhibitions pavilion is designed as a portable modular building. The system of modular construction has been thoroughly studied in order to conceive a temporary, demountable and flexible system. The final result is variable in size and configurations. The simplicity of the structure allows the subject of the pavilion, the orchids, to take the front stage.

There is only one type of clamp used as joint for all the building elements: floor panels, roof panels ad furniture (orchid containers and seating). The clamps mimic the geometric patten of the grid allowing for 6 positions.

LUX

An exploration of light and material inspired by the writings of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The object amplifies the light within its body and transmits it to the outside by diffusion while its thickness projects concentrated light beams by refraction. This experiment then transformed into a lighting design project: the following is a prototype.
