FRIDAY, JANUARY 1

New Year’s Day

*Genesis 1–2 / Matthew 1 / Psalm 1

IN THE BEGINNING In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day. Genesis 1:1–5 nlt

The very first day began with God’s voice speaking it into existence. And each day ever since has dawned because God has allowed it. He is the ultimate author, and our times are in His hands (Psalm 31:15). As you enter into a new year on this first day of 2027, what are you hoping God specifically allows in your life over the coming days? What are your plans and desires? Think them through, maybe jot them down or journal about them, and then offer them all to God, praying something like this: Heavenly Father, You are the Creator and author of time itself and all of life. I have ideas for how I hope this new year will go. But I give them to You now and ask You to either bless them or change my mind and heart about them. Above them all, my goal is to seek You through Your Word, to know and love You better, and to surrender to Your will. * This devotional follows a yearlong Bible reading plan that corresponds with each day. If you choose to complete these readings, at the end of the year you will have read God’s Word from cover to cover!

SATURDAY, JANUARY 2 Genesis 3–4 / Matthew 2 / Psalm 2

GUIDING STARS Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:1–2 esv

The wise men searched for Jesus in ancient times, and people are searching still today. When they truly find Him, they find hope and joy that endure. Today we believers can let God use us as guiding stars who light the way toward Jesus. But to do that well, we need to be constantly seeking more of Him ourselves as well. We are called to grow in wisdom, grace, and knowledge of God and His will (2 Peter 3:18; Colossians 1:9–10). Discernment is so necessary too. Seekers of Jesus hopefully have good intentions like the wise men, but some might have wickedness in mind like Herod. Thankfully our sovereign God knows and sees all and can warn, direct, and protect us from evil intentions. But we must keep in close fellowship with Him—and that’s how we live in such a way as to help make a shining path toward our Savior that others can follow. Heavenly Father, I want to help people who are truly, honorably seeking Your Son, Jesus. Please keep me close to You, learning and growing deeper in relationship with You so that I can be a light that leads others to You.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 3 Genesis 5–7 / Matthew 3 / Psalm 3

THE SHIELD AROUND US Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him.” But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side. Arise, Lord! Deliver me, my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked. From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people. Psalm 3 niv

At all times, enemies of all kinds are all around us. “We are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places,” says Ephesians 6:12 (nlt). But we can find peace in the promises of Psalm 3. The Lord is a shield around us. He protects us and gives us rest. We never need to cower in fear—because Almighty God lifts our heads high to keep looking to Him, the giver of all real confidence and courage. God Almighty, I trust in You as my shield and protector, the one who lifts my head high! I am so blessed to be Yours!

MONDAY, JANUARY 4 Genesis 8–10 / Matthew 4 / Psalm 4

FOLLOWING JESUS While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Matthew 4:18–22 esv

What a blessing it would be to have Jesus in the flesh here on earth right now to teach and guide us. But we do have the Holy Spirit, and we do have the full Bible. And so we can figuratively put ourselves in the shoes of the disciples. Like they left everything to follow Jesus when He called them, we can be willing to do so as well. We can especially remember that spending time in the Word, in prayer, in worship, and in fellowship with the Holy Spirit are all essential ways of putting everything aside to learn from Jesus and follow Him more closely. Lord Jesus, keep calling me closer to You every day. Help me to crave more and more time spent with You. Teach, guide, and lead me with Your Spirit and Your Word.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 5 Genesis 11–13 / Matthew 5:1–20 / Psalm 5

SHINE OUT FOR ALL TO SEE “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14–16 nlt

Christians are the light of the world, and we’re carrying the truly best news to share! We shouldn’t let anyone make us feel ashamed for loving and following Jesus. With the Holy Spirit living within us, we have the honor of shining our light that points to Jesus so that others will want to trust Him as Savior and praise God too. Dimming or hiding our light means missing opportunities to help people be saved from their sins. So many people in the dark world around us desperately need the good news and love of Jesus, so we need to shine as brightly as possible, saying boldly, “I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). Lord, I want to be bold about sharing the gospel, no matter what people think. Help me to shine out for all to see, so brightly and with no shame, to point people to You!

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6 Genesis 14–16 / Matthew 5:21–48 / Psalm 6

DEALING WITH ENEMIES “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?” Matthew 5:43–46 esv

It’s tempting to do, but we can’t battle with enemies—not even mentally by constantly thinking negative thoughts toward them. It’s just not good for us! As hard as it is to actually do, Jesus taught us we should love and pray for our enemies. He will help us with this challenge; and when we choose to love and pray for our enemies like He taught, then He says we’re acting like true children of God. Lord, it’s really hard to love and pray for the people who treat me terribly! But I want to do my best at this with Your help, because I love You and want to obey You. It’s only with Your power that I can choose to do this. I’m trusting You to help me, and I pray for these people who feel like enemies right now. . .

THURSDAY, JANUARY 7 Genesis 17–18 / Matthew 6:1–18 / Psalm 7

SINCERELY “When you pray, do not be as those who pretend to be someone they are not. They love to stand and pray in the places of worship or in the streets so people can see them.” Matthew 6:5 nlv

Being sincere as a Christian is sincerely important. We need to be genuine, and the good things we do that are visible on the outside need to match real goodness going on inside our minds and hearts. Jesus gave an example of how to be sincere when we pray—not in a way that makes us just get attention and lets us try to show off and make ourselves look good. Our prayers should be real conversation, a time of praise and asking God for His help and learning from Him. In all our words and actions, we need to be careful not to be show-offs who point to ourselves as the center of attention. We should constantly want to put others’ attention on the one who deserves all praise—our one true Almighty God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Almighty God, in everything I do, help me to be a sincere and genuine person. Help me to point people to You as the one worthy of all attention.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 8 Genesis 19–20 / Matthew 6:19–34 / Psalm 8

RETAIL THERAPY? “Do not gather together for yourself riches of this earth. They will be eaten by bugs and become rusted. Men can break in and steal them. Gather together riches in heaven where they will not be eaten by bugs or become rusted. Men cannot break in and steal them. For wherever your riches are, your heart will be there also.” Matthew 6:19–21 nlv

Do you ever feel like you desperately need a little “retail therapy”? Many of us can relate. But it’s good to be careful with that “need.” Because all the things we can shop for and own in this world are nice, of course. And it’s great to enjoy them, as long as we don’t worship them, making our main goals and motivations mostly about obtaining more stuff. The bottom line is that nothing here on this earth lasts forever. Things break, get lost, get old, get boring. Entertainment and vacations come to an end. And no one’s taking their stuff on to eternity when life on earth is over. So Jesus taught us to store up treasures in heaven. That’s where our blessings last forever. We stockpile good stuff there by asking God to show us the good works He has planned for us to do here, and then we love and follow and obey Him. Lord, help me to focus more on what You taught about treasure in heaven rather than gaining treasures here on earth.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 9 Genesis 21–23 / Matthew 7:1–11 / Psalm 9:1–8

THE FATHER’S GOOD GIFTS “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” Matthew 7:9–11 nlt

Our heavenly Father loves to give gifts to His children! We have the awesome privilege of getting to pray and ask Him for big blessings. As we grow in relationship with Him, He will bless us—not always exactly in the ways we hoped or wanted but always in ways we never dreamed of and that are best for us. What ways have you already experienced this in your life, and how are you needing to trust God even more for His perfect gifts and blessings, now and in the future? Heavenly Father, thank You for wanting to give me good things. I come to You and ask You for these things I need and want: _____. But please change my mind about my wants and needs if they don’t match Your will for me. I trust my life to You, and I trust You to bless me in the ways You know are best.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 10 Genesis 24 / Matthew 7:12–29 / Psalm 9:9–20

BEWARE. . . “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.” Matthew 7:15–18 esv

Jesus warned strongly against false prophets, for good reason. Second Corinthians 11:13–15 says they are “deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.” Jesus is not surprised by these false teachers and churches, so we don’t have to fear them; we just need to be on wary watch to protect ourselves and others from them. If we keep close to and strongly dependent on Jesus and the Bible through the Holy Spirit, He will help us figure out the false teachers from the ones who truly know, love, and serve Him and preach the whole Word of God. Lord Jesus, thank You for Your warnings to protect me. Please help me to be able to discern and avoid false prophets and teachers—anyone twisting Your Word and trying to draw me into sin and away from close relationship with You.

MONDAY, JANUARY 11 Genesis 25–26 / Matthew 8:1–17 / Psalm 10:1–11

WITH JUST A WORD Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. . . .” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel! . . .” Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour. Matthew 8:7–10, 13 nlt

“Just say the word, please, Jesus.” Have you ever prayed this prayer, begging the Lord for something and fully believing He can heal or do anything at all? The Roman officer did, and Jesus answered exactly the way he’d hoped—with full healing on earth for his servant. We don’t know why Jesus answers exactly the way we want in some cases and differently in others, but we must keep on believing, knowing He is always able, always good, and always worthy of all our faith. Lord Jesus, I believe You can just say the word about anything. Help me to keep trusting You both through prayers You answer exactly like I want and through prayers You answer differently.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12 Genesis 27:1–28:9 / Matthew 8:18–34 / Psalm 10:12–18

WHY ARE YOU AFRAID? Jesus got into a boat. His followers followed Him. At once a bad storm came over the lake. The waves were covering the boat. Jesus was sleeping. His followers went to Him and called, “Help us, Lord, or we will die!” He said to them, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then He stood up. He spoke sharp words to the wind and the waves. Then the wind stopped blowing. Then men were surprised and wondered about it. They said, “What kind of a man is He? Even the winds and the waves obey Him.” Matthew 8:23–27 nlv

Do you feel afraid today? What storms are going on in your life or in the lives of people you care about? What’s causing you anxiety? In the midst of it all, stop and consider the kind of man Jesus is. As you focus on Him, hand over every one of your worries and concerns to the only one who can stretch out His hand and command even the winds and waves to obey Him. If He can do that, He can surely take control of the storms that are stressing you out and give you peace. Lord Jesus, I believe You commanded even the most powerful winds and waves to stop, so You can certainly stop the storm affecting me right now. I’m trusting You for that. Please keep me focused on You and fill me with peace.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13 Genesis 28:10–29:35 / Matthew 9 / Psalm 11

THE LORD STILL RULES FROM HEAVEN But the Lord is in his holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven. He watches everyone closely, examining every person on earth. The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked. He hates those who love violence. He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked, punishing them with scorching winds. For the righteous Lord loves justice. The virtuous will see his face. Psalm 11:4–7 nlt

Every day we might wake up wondering what on earth is going on today. Despite how chaotic things can seem in the world, God truly is on His throne in heaven ruling over all. He is the one true King! He sees and knows every current event—and all the past and future events too. He knows who is evil and who is good, and He will punish all those who love to hurt others. He alone is righteous and perfect, and He will serve true justice. Almighty God, remind me every day that You are the King who is all-knowing and sovereign—and nothing surprises You. Keep my mind and heart at peace. Help me know the good plans You have for me to help shine Your light so that people might find You too and find rescue and eternal life.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 14 Genesis 30:1–31:21 / Matthew 10:1–15 / Psalm 12

WHEN IT FEELS LIKE NO ONE ELSE IS FAITHFUL Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race. Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts. . . .“Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the Lord. “I will protect them from those who malign them.” And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. Psalm 12:1–2, 5–6 niv

Can you relate to feeling weary of the world like this psalm describes? It’s so lonely sometimes trying to faithfully love and follow God and His ways in the midst of a culture that often ignores or downright scorns Him. But the remedy for this weariness and discouragement is to keep coming back to scripture to be reminded of God’s power and His promises—and the fact that above all else, He ultimately prevails. Heavenly Father, I do just get tired sometimes—tired of being faithful when it often feels like no one else cares about loving and following You. When I fall into that funk, please pull me out quickly. Show me and remind me that though this world is broken and evil, there are still many who truly love and seek to follow You. Help us to connect and share encouragement and fellowship. Keep us steadfast and strong as we trust in Your power and Your promises.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 15 Genesis 31:22–32:21 / Matthew 10:16–36 / Psalm 13

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THOSE WHO THREATEN YOU “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. . . . Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 10:26, 28–31 nlt

Evil plots and evil people will always be uncovered—if not right away, then eventually. So you don’t ever have to fear any threats or danger in this life. Trust that above all, God sees and knows, and He is the ultimate protector and judge who will bring true justice. Keep praying and asking Him to deliver justice quickly, and ask for wisdom on how to stand firmly against opponents—and for protection and courage too! Almighty God, remind me every day that I don’t need to be afraid of any evil. You see all and You know all, and You will make everything right, with true justice, in Your perfect timing.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 16 Genesis 32:22–34:31 / Matthew 10:37–11:6 / Psalm 14

STRUGGLING WITH GOD So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Genesis 32:24–28 niv

Do you ever have doubts about your faith? Do you question what God is doing and why? Have you “struggled with God”? Probably— because this broken world is often so difficult to deal with! So let this account of Jacob show you that God can handle your wrestling and wonderings. Whatever you do, just don’t let go of Him. Hold on tight through even the worst parts of life. Remember what Peter said when Jesus asked him if he wanted to stop following Him as well, like other former disciples had done. Peter replied: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68–69). Lord Jesus, whom else would I go to? Even when I’m struggling, hurting, and confused, I will keep coming to You for truth, hope, and life.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 17 Genesis 35–36 / Matthew 11:7–24 / Psalm 15

TOUGH LOVE “What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you. And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. For if the miracles I did for you had been done in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today. I tell you, even Sodom will be better off on judgment day than you.” Matthew 11:21–24 nlt

Secular society often embraces, or at least doesn’t mind, the words of Jesus that sound loving and kind according to today’s standards. But truly reading the Bible will show that Jesus’ words certainly sounded harsh at times—never cruel or unloving but full of tough love, the kind that comes with reality checks and warnings to save people from their sins and from ultimate destruction. Lord, help me to keep coming to all Your words, not just the ones that sound “nice.” Teach me all the things You want me to know for real truth, love, and wisdom—and help me to share Your truth in compassionate yet firm ways with others.

MONDAY, JANUARY 18

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Genesis 37–38 / Matthew 11:25–30 / Psalm 16

DO YOU NEED A BREAK? [Jesus said,] “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28–30 esv

What is weighing you down and burdening you today? What feels so overwhelming and heavy? Maybe it’s family or relationship problems. Maybe it’s work or finances. Maybe it’s health issues. Maybe it’s a broken, grieving heart. . . Whatever it is, Jesus says to bring it to Him and He’ll help you with it. He’ll give you a break and help you feel peaceful and rested. Ask Him what to do about your heavy load, and then listen and let Him teach you. How? Through prayer and through worship and through His Word. What a wonderful Savior and friend He is to want to help with every care and concern you have! Lord Jesus, I need a break from my problems and pain. I need Your rest and peace and comfort. Please guide me and show me how to deal with the hard things going on in my life the way You want me to. Thank You for being such a loving and caring Savior!

TUESDAY, JANUARY 19 Genesis 39–40 / Matthew 12:1–29 / Psalm 17

WONDERFUL WAYS You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong. I am determined not to sin in what I say. I have followed your commands, which keep me from following cruel and evil people. My steps have stayed on your path; I have not wavered from following you. I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God. Bend down and listen as I pray. Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. Psalm 17:3–7 nlt

Let this passage encourage you to ask God to bless you in wonderful ways. He is full of unfailing love! And especially when your heavenly Father knows you are walking in obedience to His commands and His Word, He wants to reward you. If there are ways you admit right now that you need to repent and return to your Father in obedience, then don’t delay any longer. Draw close to Him, seeking forgiveness and receiving His grace—and then humbly ask for more of His beautiful blessings in your life. He loves you so dearly! Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love, endless grace, wonderful ways, and beautiful blessings in my life. I am so grateful to be Your child.
