Jesus was digging into a folded-napkin, no-elbows-on-thetable dinner party with His disciples—the Last Supper. He wanted to give them some final instructions before He went to the cross. You’d think everyone would be hanging on His every word. Nope!

Instead, the disciples bickered about who was the real GOAT— greatest of all time—and each voted for himself! Jesus didn’t yell. He didn’t roll His eyes (though maybe He wanted to). He just grabbed a towel, sloshed some suds in a bowl. . .and scrubbed his friends’ stinky toes.

In those days, foot washing was a servant’s job. People wore sandals and tromped all over dusty roads and donkey droppings, so feet were gross. But here was Jesus—the Son of God—doing a dirty job. Peter was shocked. “No way, Jesus! You’re too important for this!”

Jesus just smiled and said, “Unless I wash you, you won’t be a part of me.” Peter changed his tune quick: “Then bring on the bubbles, please!”

But Jesus told the disciples if they wanted to be all-stars in His kingdom, they’d have to follow His example and serve others. “You must love each other as I have loved you” (John 13:34 nlv). Later, Jesus proved His incredible love when He died for us on the cross.

Remember—the GOAT in God’s kingdom is not the one with the best style, stuff, or skills. It’s the one holding the towel.

Head down. No eye contact. Just keep walking. Matthew knew that none of the people he passed on the street would ever see him as more than his mistakes. You see, Matt didn’t have friends. He was Jewish, but he worked for the Romans. And Matt’s people liked the Romans even less than they liked him.

The Romans bullied the Jewish people and charged them unfair taxes. But Matt liked having nice stuff and lots of money, so he became a tax collector for his people’s enemy. Matt was lonely now though. No one talked to him, and he couldn’t enter the synagogue—that’s a big word for the place where the Jewish people worshipped God.

One day, Matt heard a ruckus in the street. A bustling crowd swarmed around the new teacher, pressing close to hear His words. Curious, Matt stuck his head out of his booth. He was startled to see that, through the pushing-pulling crowded sea of faces, Jesus was looking right at him. His deep eyes seemed to count exactly all that Matt wanted in his heart. And Jesus didn’t look away in disgust. Hope began to build up inside of Matt. Could someone really crack the code of his messy life, and still love him anyway?

Jesus held out a hand in welcome. “Follow me,” He said. Matt wanted to leave behind his greedy ways and his loneliness. So he clanked down his coins, snapped shut his record book, and walked right out of his booth into a new life with Jesus.

No matter how many mistakes you’ve made, Jesus welcomes you to follow Him too.

The Case for Kindness

“I want pizza,” you plead. “But cheeseburgers are better!” she argues. You cross your arms. She stomps her foot. People can be hard to handle—and sometimes the hard case is you! Back in Jesus’ day, it was Jews on one side and Samaritans on the other. They had a long history of hurt feelings and not agreeing.

One day, a man on the Jewish side yelled, “Objection!” He was a pro in the Law and knew that scripture said to “love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Luke 10:27 nlv). But then he questioned Jesus. “So. . .who counts as my neighbor?” He was looking for a way out of the love law. Do I have to love everybody—even those yucky Samaritans?

Jesus brought a surprising case to the lawyer. He told about a Jewish man who was attacked by robbers. They left him beaten up beside the road. Then a priest and a Levite—two Jewish men who worked at the temple—came along, but they both crossed the road and walked right by on the other side. They didn’t want to get dirty, even to help someone on their team!

Next a Samaritan came along. He saw the scraped-up stranger and showed kindness. He bandaged his bruises, hoisted him onto his own donkey, and carted him off to the Jericho Inn, where he tucked him in to rest and heal. The Samaritan even paid the bill! Love isn’t just saying you care—it’s about what you do! How can you be a good neighbor? Show love and kindness to everyone, even not-so-nice people and those who don’t agree with you. Because in God’s courtroom, actions speak louder than words.

“Your daughter is dead.” Jairus stumbled as if he’d tripped over loose sandal strings. No! Jesus was coming, and Jairus knew that Jesus could make his daughter better. Jairus was an important leader, but he could not help his little girl. And now it was impossible. Jairus’ hope dried up like brown leaves in the fall. Tears tumbled down his cheeks.

But Jesus looked at Jairus with love and said, “Do not be afraid, just believe.” A new seed of hope sprouted roots in Jairus’ heart as he followed Jesus back home. The leader’s house was crammed full of sniffling, sobbing people. Jesus told them, “Don’t cry. She’s not dead. She’s just sleeping.” Everyone laughed at Jesus, then cried some more. They thought He was crazy. The little girl had died—sure as the sky was blue.

Then Jesus made everyone leave, except His disciples Peter, James, and John. Jairus showed them his daughter’s room. Maybe Peter drew up a Stay Out! Top Secret Savior Stuff! sign for the door.

Jesus held the little girl’s hand and said, “Child, get up” (Luke 8:54 nlv). And Jairus’ little girl popped out of bed! Faith sprang up like spring dandelions over the father’s heart. He hugged her tight as happy tears now filled his eyes.

You can always trust Jesus, even during the hard, scary parts of life. Whether you realize it or not, He’s with you, doing His top secret Savior stuff. No matter how big your problems are, hold on to His words: “Do not be afraid, just believe.”

The Truth about Thorns

The rock you kicked skids down the sidewalk. Your disappointment drags as heavy as a book bag full of homework. . .on a Friday night. You really wanted to make the team—and you prayed about it—but you didn’t get it. When you pray hard about something you want, it’s really tough if God says no.

You’re not alone though.

The apostle Paul loved Jesus a lot and traveled everywhere, telling people about Him. God showed Paul incredible things in heaven, but then He told Paul to put a lock on his lips. Not a peep to anyone!

God didn’t want Paul to get proud about his heavenly experience. So the Lord sent something that Paul called a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7 skjv). Ouch! We don’t know exactly what Paul’s thorn was. Whatever it was, it made life harder.

Paul prayed three times for God to take the thorn away. But God said no—not because He didn’t care, but because He had better plans for Paul. God told the apostle, “I am all you need. I give you My loving-favor. My power works best in weak people.” Paul didn’t pout. He trusted God and said he’d brag about his weakness, if that meant God’s power would gleam like a laser beam in a smoke cloud.

When God says no to something you ask for, know that He still loves you. He might have better plans in mind. But even if hard things happen, remember that when you’re weak, God’s strength shows up—and everyone can see that He’s got your back!

No Word Count Needed

Ugh! You’ve only written 125 words. You need 200 words to finish this book report. So, you add some extra words here and there: “This book was so very interesting because it was interesting in a very interesting kind of way. The main character was extremely courageous and also very brave in his bravery.” That should do it!

Prayer isn’t about using a bunch of big words to impress God or get His attention. What a relief! Jesus had great news for us about prayer. He didn’t say, “Always make sure you use more than 150 words with at least seven impressive adjectives.” Instead, He said that God isn’t grading our word count at all. He just wants us to be real and honest. “When you pray, do not say the same thing over and over again making long prayers like the people who do not know God. They think they are heard because their prayers are long. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”

See? No need to talk until your voice gives out or to use fancy words. God’s not confused, and He gets it the first time. He knows what you need, but praying is still important. God knows that talking is a great way to get to know Him.

You can pray, “God, I’m scared about my test,” or “God, thank You for the awesome day I just had!”

He loves talking to you all the time. Don’t stress about saying the perfect thing. Just talk to God like a friend!

God’s Wimpy Warrior

Who, me? Gideon was a tad nervous about God’s plan. After all, he had been hiding in a hole when an angel popped in and said, “What’s up, powerful soldier?”

“You must be mistaken,” Gideon stuttered. “I’m nobody.” He flexed his flimsy arms as proof. “Ask anybody. I’m the weakest of the weak.” The angel disagreed. He told Gideon that God wanted him to save Israel from those big bullies the Midianites. Gideon shook his head. “You’ve got the wrong guy!” But the angel looked him up and down and said that the Lord was with him—as if that settled all Gideon’s arguments.

It didn’t. God had to prop up Gideon’s faith a few more times before this scaredy-cat was ready to trust Him. God promised Gideon that he would defeat the huge Midianite army of thousands—awesome news! But Gideon could bring only 300 men. . .

“Umm, are you sure, God?”

“Send the rest home,” God said. “I don’t need them.”

In the black of night, Gideon and his ragtag bunch surrounded the Midianite camp. Gideon’s men were heavily armed—with trumpets, torches, and empty jars? Well, they were ready to nab mongooses from the bushes anyway. But when they blew their trumpets and smashed their jars and held their torches high, crazy things happened. We’ve all spooked at things that go bump in the night, but the mighty Midianite army ran screaming into the night. And then they attacked each other. God won!

Gideon was small and scared, but God is unstoppable. Whether you feel unsure or unable, God is with you too. He’ll provide everything you need to do the job He gives you.

When she and her family had been baptized, she said to us, “If you think I am faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my house.” She kept on asking. Then we went with her.

The Business of Big Hearts

“Here, take mine!” Your friend is always so generous. Snacks, markers, or even that cool hoverboard—everything is shared with you, no questions asked. In fact, your friend insists on sharing!

Long ago, Lydia sold fancy purple cloth in the small but rich city of Philippi. Her shop was hopping like a frog on a trampoline, so Lydia lived in a big, nice house.

On the Sabbath she went down to the river for her usual prayer meeting. But that day she met the apostle Paul. He was traveling the world, telling people about Jesus. When Lydia heard about Jesus, something stunning happened. She listened closely, and the Bible says God “opened her heart to hear what Paul said.” Lydia believed in Jesus—right there by the river. Then she and her whole family got baptized.

Thrilled about what God had done for her, Lydia told Paul and his friends they had to stay at her place. Jesus had shifted her from selling to sharing. She pitched her plan hard until she’d closed the deal. She couldn’t wait to host the missionaries in her home!

When you love Jesus, your heart starts to grow bigger—not in size, but in generosity. God shows you when others need help. And because He has given you so much, you want to share what you have too.

You probably don’t have a big house or expensive cloth to sell, but you can still be generous. Hold open the door for someone. Donate the toys you don’t use. Help your mom with the dishes. God is in the business of big hearts. Love large, give freely, share always.

Build a Boat

Boom! God shut the door. Inside the ark’s dim lower deck, the lions paced the edges of their pen. The zebras snorted, and nervous monkey chatter echoed off the gopher-wood hull. The coming storm buzzed like electricity in the air.

God had told Noah to build a boat long before the first raindrop hit the dirt. God had warned that the people were wicked and a flood was coming. But He made a covenant, or a promise, with Noah: Build a boat and load it up with animals, and I will protect your family. Noah didn’t skip a beat. He believed God and started sawing and hammering together an epic ship.

Meanwhile, the neighbors thought Noah had a few screws loose—not in his boat, mind you, but in his head. His big, beautiful boat was perfect, yet something did smell a little fishy. There wasn’t an ocean, or even a large mud puddle, anywhere in sight. “Planning a lake vacation, Noah?” His neighbors hooted with laughter. Then the animals showed up, and they laughed even harder. Noah ignored them and kept right on hammering. He knew that God always did what He said.

Splat. One day a raindrop landed on Noah’s head. Thunderclouds rolled in, spreading a dark shadow across the land. As the rain poured down in sheets, huge streams of water shot up out of the ground, like a thousand fire hoses. God flooded the earth just as He promised, and Noah and his family were safe on the ark.

You can have faith like Noah’s, knowing God will do what He says. All you have to do is listen to God and be obedient. He’ll take care of the rest. God always keeps His promises.

Our fight is not with people. It is against the leaders and the powers and the spirits of darkness in this world. It is against the demon world that works in the heavens. Because of this, put on all the things God gives you to fight with. Then you will be able to stand in that sinful day. When it is all over, you will still be standing. So stand up and do not be moved. Wear a belt of truth around your body. Wear a piece of iron over your chest which is being right with God. Wear shoes on your feet which are the Good News of peace. Most important of all, you need a covering of faith in front of you. This is to put out the fire-arrows of the devil. The covering for your head is that you have been saved from the punishment of sin. Take the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
