STATE MISSIONS AND YOU Every year, Oklahoma Baptist churches come together to participate in the Edna McMillan State Missions Offering, supporting Gospel ministry across our state. The Gospel is transforming lives behind prison walls. Through a partnership with Oklahoma Baptist University, incarcerated men have the opportunity to earn a theological education and be equipped for ministry. As they grow in their knowledge of Scripture and love for Christ, they faithfully disciple and encourage fellow inmates, bringing the hope of Jesus by starting Bible studies and churches in prisons across Oklahoma. Through the State Missions Offering, Oklahoma Baptists are equipping these men to make an eternal impact right where they are.
MINISTERIAL CRISIS CARE
Pastors faithfully care for others through seasons of joy, grief, uncertainty and loss. When they or their families face unexpected crises, Oklahoma Baptists come alongside them with practical assistance,
encouragement, and prayer. Through Ministerial Crisis Care, the State Missions Offering helps strengthen pastors and their families, ensuring they receive the Christ-centered care they need as they continue faithfully serving their churches. When you give, you can know that leaders are being equipped. Pastors and their families are being supported. Prisoners are hearing the hope of Jesus. New churches are being planted. Apologetics 101 It’s back to school time in Oklahoma. From preschool to college, career tech to post-graduate—students of all ages are going back to their schooling. Education and learning are core features in the Christian life. One often-neglected area of study of discipleship is apologetics; or defending the faith. Whether you or someone you love is a young person about to head off to college, apologetics can be a great “booster shot” for their faith. The same is true for Christians of every age or stage.
Strobel added, “It makes no sense to talk about the Son of God—who communicates the word of God, and performs acts of God, and brings the salvation of God—unless there is a God. Apologetics lays the groundwork for belief in God through arguments and evidence.” Whether it’s evidence for existence of God, for the Creation of the world, defending biblical morality or for the Resurrection of Jesus, we live in a world full of questions and direct challenges to our faith. It’s our job to be prepared to speak to those issues in a grace and truth-filled way.

Something Like That Could Kill You
Well, it happened again at the end of last month. The Lord blessed me with another birthday. I made another trip around the sun. The problem is I have had so many of those pesky little trips that seem to be happening more quickly all the time that I have experienced a little dizziness. I have noticed that these confounded birthdays have impacted me in some rather unique ways. For example, it hasn’t been too long ago that I was pretty much oblivious to most things around me, except for bacon, or bacon cheeseburgers, or bacon and eggs. You know—the essential things of life.

The next example I will give you has to do with watching television. Today, we have access to innumerable TV channels. REMEMBERING 9/11: 25 YEARS AGO, HURTING OKLAHOMANS SHARED THE BALM OF GOD’S GRACE IN NEW YORK CITY
Many times, God uses the effects of a disaster to soften the hearts of those who minister in His name to later share a message of hope with those who are suffering from their own tragedy. Such was the case 25 years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, as the Lord used the heartbreak of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah bombing on April 19, 1995, to prepare hundreds of Oklahoma Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers to bring solace to residents of the shocked city reeling from the destruction of the World Trade Center. On that fateful day, two commercial jetliners were flown intentionally into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, collapsing both 110-story twin towers in less than two hours. A third jetliner was crashed into the west side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was hijacked with the intent to fly it into the U.S. Capitol, but that attack was averted when passengers joined together in a heroic attempt to regain control of the plane, which ultimately crashed into rural Pennsylvania.
The attacks resulted in 36,000 units of blood donated to the New York Blood Center. Jobs lost in New York City totaled 146,100; 23,000 apartments in lower Manhattan were eligible for asbestos clean-up, and 422,000 residents of the city were estimated to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The first people North American Mission Board (NAMB) disaster relief (DR) coordinator Mickey Caison thought of when he heard the news of the attacks were Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) DR Director Sam Porter and FBI chaplain Joe Williams, a specialist in trauma response. Caison knew Oklahoma DR volunteers—who had ministered in the aftermath of the Murrah Building bombing—would be able to relate on a personal level to their Big Apple counterparts.
Porter hustled to assemble a response team from Oklahoma to help get the job done. Also packing their bags for New York were Leslie Sias, BGCO chaplaincy specialist; Paul Bettis, BGCO prison chaplaincy consultant and Jack Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, Poe, chaplain with the Oklahoma City Police including all 227 civilians and the 19 terrorists Department. who later became the third North American Mission Board (NAMB)-endorsed disaster relief chaplain in the U.S. and the first in Oklahoma. Porter’s group of five chaplains got to New York three days after the towers fell and manned the temporary morgue at Ground Zero for almost two weeks. The ministry at Ground Zero generally involved caring for and praying with first responders and serving food in partnership with The Salvation Army. One of their main ministries was connecting with first responders and simply asking them to tell them their story. Often, a connection was made when volunteers said they were from Oklahoma and were acquainted with some of the trauma that can result from terrorist attacks. Porter said the work included many difficult things, such as praying over the remains of every person who was uncovered from the wreckage before the remains were moved on for attempted identification. Still, the team was grateful for the opportunity. “We knew God had us there for a reason to make an impact. … It was a great honor for us to be there and tell people about the hope of Christ Jesus,” Porter said. “I’ve never prayed as much or cried as much in my whole life, but God made a big difference.” Anthony Jordan, who was serving as BGCO executive directortreasurer at the time, announced Sept. 14 that the state convention had sent $20,000 to the New York convention to help after the attacks. The unprecedented terrorist attacks by the hijackers on commercial jetliners left untold numbers of people dead and injured. Authorities went on alert from coast to coast, halting all air traffic, evacuating high-profile buildings and tightening security at strategic federal and military installations. Oklahoma’s Southern Baptists again showed caring hearts, donating $237,526.85 by Oct. 31, 2001, to help victims of the terrorist attacks. through a love offering. Ultimately, Oklahoma Baptists donated $383,577.62 after the attacks, all of it going directly to survivors and victims’ families. They also quickly put their feet to the task. Beginning in December 2001, four Oklahoma Baptist teams served food to recovery workers at the Salvation Army-run kitchen at Ground Zero. In all, more than 70 Sooner State Baptists served police officers, firefighters, Port Authority officers, National Guard personnel and construction crews clearing the site. The final Oklahoma crew served in May 2002 at the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, where debris from the twin towers was taken. As the 25th anniversary nears, the impact of Oklahoma Baptists’ service and generosity is still felt in our state and by New Yorkers, and the evidence of God’s grace amid tragedy remains as clear today as it was then. At its heart, CP is a unified financial strategy through which churches dedicate a percentage of their undesignated offerings to advance the Gospel. NEWALLA, PECAN VALLEY PASTOR OPENS ‘CHILDREN’S WHITE HOUSE CHAPEL & PRAYER GARDEN’ NEWALLA—Earlier this year, Pastor Ed Moore opened the “Children’s White House Chapel & Prayer Garden.” Held within a small-scale replica of the White House, this exhibit displays how faith has been an integral part of American history. Moore said that he wanted to remind the younger generations of how important faith has been and show God’s goodness throughout the United States’ 250 year history. The exhibit is located at Shawnee, Twin Lakes, and visits must be scheduled. To set up a visitation appointment, call 405-818-9244.
TRIBUTES Sharon Johnson died April 25 and her husband, Earnest Johnson, died May 2. Earnest was a retired Oklahoma Baptist Pastor, missionary to Zimbabwe and Malawi, and served as a Director of Missions in Rogers Association. Sharon served as administrative program planner in field placement with Oklahoma Baptists in addition to serving alongside Earnest in the church and on the mission field.
Billy Bob Fuller died May 24. He pastored at churches in north Texas and Oklahoma before moving from Dallas to Blackburn, where he served as pastor until his death. He preached twice a month at Baptist Village in Cleveland. Tandy James died June 30. He served Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children (OBHC) from 1985–2017. During his more than 30 years of ministry, he served at Boys Ranch Town, Baptist Children’s Home, Owasso and Baptist Children’s Home, Madill (now Baptist Home for Girls). He also served as Vice President of Development before becoming Executive Vice President. Stephen Smith died July 1. He was former worship leader at Choctaw, Choctaw Road and other churches in the area, a member of the Singing Churchmen of Oklahoma, and the brother-in-law of Keith Burkhart, pastor of Del City, First Southern. Delores Mohr died July 11. She worked in the Oklahoma Baptists Missions Office.

LAVERNE—This Harper County community can be found at the base of the Oklahoma Panhandle. With a population of about 1,200 residents and the closest grocery store 45 minutes away, this town is the definition of rural. However, “rural” has never stopped God. Every Wednesday night, Laverne, First goes all hands on deck to accommodate more than 150 kids through their three youth programs: Stomp, Level Up and Youth. Through these ministries, Laverne, First draws nearly half of the small town’s school system and reaches them with the Gospel. But the movement doesn’t stop with children and youth. “In many ways, that Wednesday night program has become a connection point to children, students and families,” said Donnie Scott, pastor of Laverne, First. “We are constantly seeing God change lives in students or parents.” On Wednesday nights, adults are brought to church by their kids, and many begin attending Sunday morning services. Laverne, First then continues to build relationships with the parents.

“Our church is a diamond in the rough, alive and thriving,” said Scott. “It’s amazing to be a part of it.” Donnie and his wife, Mandy, were members of Mustang, Chisholm Heights for several years, where mentors helped Donnie grow in his faith. The couple has three sons. Donnie continued to work in the private business sector, where he picked up life skills along the way. Two years after graduating from Midwestern Seminary, Scott again felt lost and wondered if he had heard God correctly. Then, within the span of a week, he received calls from five different churches requesting his resume for a pastoral role. “I recall Laverne was interested in finding a pastor with experience, so they maybe didn’t want someone like me at first,” said Scott. “One guy kept rotating my resume to the top of the pile, telling the search committee, ‘This guy has a degree in Agricultural Education. Maybe he will understand us a little bit.’” That opened the door for conversation between Scott and Laverne, First. For the past 13 years, Scott has faithfully served the community at Laverne. Students and adults alike have been able to go beyond Laverne to proclaim the Gospel. Through the International Mission Board, Laverne, First has sent groups to Belize and Peru, and through GOStudents to Tulsa.
This past year, northern Oklahoma was subject to intense, damaging wildfires. Many in Laverne were affected, including Doug and Debra Little, who lost their house to the fire. Despite the losses, God has used the community at Laverne to help those affected. “We have been prone to disaster out here, and fires are one of them,” said Scott. “The amazing thing is how God has worked through each one of those situations. There would not be enough time to describe how God has worked through them.” Whether it’s weekly church activities, such as their bustling Wednesday night program, special events or unique situations like disaster response, Scott is trusting the Lord to continue building God’s Kingdom in their area of the state and beyond. 22

BUDDY HUNT ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT, REFLECTS ON ‘GOD’S FAITHFULNESS’ By Messenger Staff Buddy Hunt, Oklahoma Baptists’ Southeast Regional Ministry Partner, has announced his retirement and will conclude his service with the state convention Sept. 30.
In 1991, Hunt joined Oklahoma Baptists, then known as the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, serving in the Religious Education Department. During that season, he assisted churches in youth ministry, Sunday School, discipleship, family ministry, men’s ministry and other areas, while also serving summers on the Falls Creek program staff.
Hunt’s ministry has spanned decades, including two seasons of service with Oklahoma Baptists, 1991-97 and 2020-present, as well as years in youth ministry and the pastorate in Oklahoma Baptist churches. Chris Talbot Paul leads the Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) at Oklahoma State University (OSU). There, he teaches and disciples students to live on mission and get the Gospel to every corner of their campus and to the ends of the Earth. OSU BCM is raising funds for a new building to better minister to and share the Gospel with college students on campus.
Pray for the OSU BCM team as they begin fundraising for a new BCM building in Stillwater. Pray for the Lord to provide.
Dan and Dawn are currently at work with an indigenous tribe in Brazil. They planted and lead a church on the tribe’s largest people reservation with 11 members in the church body. They are also hard at work sharing God’s Word with nearby villages.
Pray for the indigenous believers in their church, that they would make Christ first in their lives and persevere in their faith.

Pray for the Lord’s favor with students, that many would hear the Gospel and respond in faith.
Pray for Oklahoma Baptists who are serving in Central Asia through the International Mission Board. Central Asia is comprised of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Central Asians are experiencing deep grief and suffering because of war, repressive laws, and natural disasters. Islam is the predominant religion in Central Asia and many who choose to follow Jesus are persecuted for “betraying” their former faith, traditions, and family.
Please pray that followers of Jesus throughout Central Asia will reflect Jesus’ sacrificial love as a witness to the unsaved people around them. Please pray God would make new believers bold as they try to live out their faith in adverse and many times dangerous circumstances. Pray God would protect and provide for missionaries serving there.
