We’re coming to the end of the Noongar season ‘Djilba’ and on the cusp of ‘Kambarang’ which will bring with it warmer, drier days, flowering yellow acacias and the awakening of reptiles such as snakes from their winter hibernation.

While I’m really not ready for it to be October yet (have you seen how jam-packed the local calendar is for October?!), September somehow hasn’t flown by tooooo fast. In early September we hosted our second Art Class with Charlie Colbung at the Quairading CRC, which had a great group of participants and heaps of glowing reviews - read more on page 29. We kicked off Curtain Raisers ticket sales mid-way though the month which has kept us very busy (just a casual 600+ sold so far!) and on the recent public holiday we even snuck in a cheeky Skipper’s Ticket course! Both Tamara & I are once again getting involved in the Curtain Raisers’ production of Rock of Ages this year, and it’s been an absolute hoot! Sure the twice weekly evening rehearsals are chipping into quality sleep time so we’re pretty well running on extra-shot flat whites; it’s absolutely going to be worth it. With tickets at just $30 this year, you’re going to be running low on excuses to not come and see the show! As we go to print there’s maybe one seat left for each of the Saturday nights and a handful of tables for the Friday shows. Get around us - how sweet would it be to sell out all four shows!! An equally as big event (maybe even bigger, and definitely sooner!) is the huge 100th Quairading Ag Show next Saturday! We feel like there’s a really good buzz around town ahead of the show and we hope to see heaps of community members there, past and present. With the 2020 show not going ahead, there’s been an even bigger build up than usual and the Ag Society committee have got a pretty sweet afternoon and evening of festivities planned - including fireworks!! Also, keep an eye on GWN7 for our fun ad featuring our illustrations by Meg Caporn! In a desperate attempt to maybe find a little slice of zen next month, we’re giving Janet Robertson from Nourishabley the call up to hold a Sunrise Yoga Session! Sunrises are cool, and yoga is too—so check out all the details on page 25 and get in touch to book your spot. See you at all of the events! Also, send coffee. AGED CARE UPDATE An application for funding 3 additional beds has been processed from WACHS to the Commonwealth to be approved. WACHS will action once the Commonwealth respond. Updates are few and far between as this process does take time but I have not forgotten to follow up regularlyDeanna. CREATIVE ARTS SOCIETY If you are interested in crafts and arts of any and all mediums, feel free to join the Quairading Creative Arts Society who meet in the Gym/ Art Space at the Quairading CRC every Thursday from 10am. School holidays are here which means it’s less than two weeks until show day, the count down is well and truly ON!

What better way to cap off an epic afternoon at the show, and celebrate a show 100 years in the making, than with a fireworks display! Kids: make sure you’re getting your school holiday chores done and making some sweet pocket money to blow on Side Show Alley! The arcade games, food and drink are the ONLY things that are going to cost you money, all other ride and entertainment will be FREE all afternoon, and into the night! We can’t wait to see what everyone enters into the Exhibition Hall and Livestock Shed. Quairading Curtain Raisers presents Rock of Ages! Come on and feel the noise this October as the legends of Quairading Curtain Raisers take on Rock of Ages! Featuring an all-star local band, cast and crew—with a few stalwarts of the stage and a sprinkling of fresh young talent—the Quairading Town Hall will be rocked on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd, Friday 29th and Saturday 30th October 2021. Rock of Ages is a big, brash, energetic tribute to classic rock, to over-the-top ballads and fierce guitar, to the gritty glamour and rough energy of the Sunset Strip. This jukebox musical features ‘80s hits such as “We Built this City”, “I Wanna Rock”, and “Don’t Stop Believin”. The Quairading Curtain Raisers have been taking to the stage every other year for the past three decades. The completely volunteer driven production raises money to donate to local community causes—the very first of which was for new curtains in the Quairading Town Hall, the very curtains that still sweep across the stage today. A feature of Curtain Raisers’ productions of late has been a catered two course meal to go along with the show, however this year punters will have the opportunity to show off their platter game with BYO food encouraged for each performance. With the ongoing risk that changing COVID event restrictions will force last minute disruptions to performance dates, eliminating a catered meal reduces the risk of food and fund wastage—and creates a cheaper show ticket! Local clubs and groups will be offered the opportunity to raise some funds for their own activities by taking on the management of the ever important bar at each night’s production. Club volunteers will be hard at work delivering tasty cold beverages direct to seated patrons so you can sit back relax, enjoy the show and your BYO nibbles. If that wasn’t enough, the crafty Curtain Raisers cast and crew have been preparing some interactive pre-show entertainment to get audience members right in the mood. Without giving too much away, if you’re a fan of Spicks & Specks, RocKwiz and good old pub trivia, this is a pre-show not to be missed! Book a ticket, grow out your mullet and don your band t-shirt. Art Class with Charlie Colbung We shifted gears this time around for our Art Class with Charlie Colbung, to a Friday evening with a vino, and it was delightful! As always there were the cries of “I can’t paint”, “I don’t have an arty bone in my body” etcetera etcetera… namely from myself, but this wasn’t my first rodeo, so I knew that my lack of artistic ability wasn’t going to be a problem. Charlie expertly guided -sometimes painted for- the 12 of us to create a moody moonrise evening scene. My mind was blown several times that evening, firstly because we used just one shade of blue and white acrylic paint, and then by how same/same but different and amazing all of the pieces created that evening were. Charlie has a very relaxed and relatable teaching style and he breaks down the process of creating depth and perception, removing a lot of the daunt. Charlie can work with a variety of mediums and subject matter so if you have a suggestion for the next class be sure to let us know so we can float it by him. Thanks to all of the participants for making it a really enjoyable night and we hope that if it was out of your comfort zone, your comfort zone has now been expanded. Written by Tamara Stacey.

Loose Stitches Spring has sprung and haven’t the show of orchids and everlastings been amazing? Things have been ticking along nicely at Loosies with our regular ladies producing some beautiful work and we have had lots of visitors popping in to check out our little shop. Don’t forget all you sewers and patch workers out there to get your pieces into the Quairading Royal Show Exhibition Hall on Saturday 9th October! Pick up a copy of the Schedule from the CRC. We are starting to get a little busy in October with WAQA (WA Quilters Assoc.) bringing a bus load of about 40 lovely ladies to Sit n Sew for the day on Saturday 16th. Do you want to learn to sew using your sewing machine? We will be running Kids’ classes on Tuesday 12th, 26th October and 2nd November, ages 10yrs and up MUST have your own machine in good working condition. SUDOKU Sudoku is a logicbased, combinatorial numberplacement puzzle. Quairading Golf Club Well this month’s edition of the BB finds us at the end of another successful golf season and packing away our clubs in readiness for the bowling green or swimming pool. A big thank you to the CRC for publishing our notes every week along with our occasional report in the Banksia Bulletin, it’s very much appreciated and a great way to get our news out to members and interested locals. We have had a huge month in September consisting of our Championships, Country-week (for the ladies) Charity Day, Afgri Day and Scott Johnson Memorial Day. A massive task for a small club but thank you to all members and our wonderful ‘extras’ for all the work that has been put in on and off the course, it really is appreciated. A very special thank you to all sponsors involved. When you read this we would’ve had a little gathering to wish Shauna and Noel Stone all the best of luck. Shauna thank you for your many, many years of work in the Quairading Golf Club. Your patience, fairness, hard work and above all your sense of humour have been an asset to our Club. Just to finish off Shauna’s involvement in the Avon Valley Ladies Golf Association, she and Anne Johnson won the gross in the Foursomes event last week in Gingin. Well done ladies! As such the Service commemorates four longstanding traditions within the Church and community: Harvest Thanksgiving, All Saints’ Day (1 st November), All Souls’ Day (2nd November) and Remembrance Day (11th November). All members of the community are invited to attend the Service on the 7th November at 9.00 a.m. in St Faith’s Anglican Church, Quairading. Patronal Festival of St Faith 5.30 p.m., Saturday, 16th October, 2021 St Faith’s Church, Quairading
The Anglican Church in Quairading is dedicated to Saint Faith or Saint Faith of Conques who it is believed was a girl or young woman of Agen in Aquitaine. Her legend recounts that having been arrested during the persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire she refused to make pagan sacrifices even under torture. This led to her being tortured to death with a red-hot brazier. Her death is thought to have occurred in the year 287 or 290 AD. The centre of her veneration is the Abbey of Sainte-Foy, Conques, where her relics arrived in the nineth century. Important churches dedicated to her are at Conchesen-Ouche in Normandy and at Sélestat, in Alsace. The city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Santa Fe Springs in Los Angeles, California, take their namesake from Saint Faith. St Faith is a patron of pilgrims, prisoners, and soldiers. Orthodox Icon of St Faith The original St Faith’s Church in Quairading was dedicated on 8th December, 1911 while the present church was consecrated on 9th May, 1965. The Guest Preacher at the Service will be the Rev’d Ross Jones, Chaplain, St Bartholomew’s House. St Bartholomew’s House (St Bart’s) is one of Perth’s leading community service organisations helping more than 500 people in Perth on any given night. It stands firmly by the side of vulnerable West Australians experiencing, or at risk of homelessness, offering mental health support, housing, crisis accommodation and aged care services to those who need them most.
