FROM THE EDITOR When life gives you lemons, trade them for coffee. This is my mantra for the next month. Throw the Quairading Ag Show and Curtain Raisers rehearsals and performances into the usual well balanced mix of work and extra curricular activities, and many of us aren’t going to know if we’re Arthur or Martha (this is a phrase I’ve very recently added to my vocab rotation, and am loving). On the CRC front, things are strong as ever; despite some uncertainty in regards to our major funding over the next few years. Without getting too political: the current state government’s projected budget figures show a 40% cut to the funding of the 106 CRCs across the state from 2019. From 1st October 2017, we have funding secured for 18 months (through to end of 2018). We’re told a review will then take place and some of us may lose (or suffer significant cuts to) our major Royalties for Regions funding from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Have I lost you? Soz. I’ve included a media release on page 7 regarding a grass roots community campaign we’re part of, backed by Mia Davies (leader of The Nationals WA). Please give it a read and pop into the CRC to add your name and info to the petition. If you have any questions about how this all might affect you (or what the hell it is we as a CRC even do) please just ask! Shifting gears; have you noticed the tired state of the big yellow and black sign on the corner of York-Quairading Road and Corrigin Road? Actually, have you noticed the sign at all? We have and we reckon it’s in need of a little bit of knocking-down-and-replacing. The Shire’s OH&S assessment and budget agree, and we’ve been tasked with chatting to the community and coming up a design for a new “Welcome Sign”. Some concept ideas can be found on page 22 and in the foyer at the CRC. If you’re someone who has opinions and likes to share them, come and do so! We’re hoping to finalise a design by the end of the month, so hop to it. Also included in this edition of the Banksia Bulletin are profiles for the six local candidates vying for a position on the Quairading Shire Council. There are four vacant positions, with two current Councillors renominating and four new faces. Have a read and play your part by popping into the Shire anytime now to cast an early vote, or on election day on Saturday 21st October. LASTLY, COME AND BUY A CURTAIN RAISERS TICKET! For just $50, you will not only be well fed for the evening but we will treat you to some very entertaining (see: questionable) singing, dancing and acting. We’ll try not to offend anyone with the miserly attempts at “Scottish” accents, but no guarantees. I’m still amazed at how cool it is that we as a community have the capacity to fill a full cast and crew, all in the name of good fun and a bit of fundraising (which goes to numerous community projects). Now we just need all of you to help fill in the audience! On second thoughts, I might save some lemons. They go well with gin. And whiskey. MEN'S GOLF REPORT: On the weekend the men & women's challenge was held. The individual winners were R Hadlow on 42 pts, r/up S Wilson on 37, best female B Bond on 35pts & next best male T Bond on 36pts, from K Johnson also on 36pts. Overall the men won convincingly, better luck to the girls next year. This Sunday is our closing day, 2 person ambrose see you all there.

PAP SMEARS Our Practice Nurse, Jess Richards RN, is now a registered Pap Smear Provider. If you are due for a standard Pap smear and unable to attend an appointment with Dr Ellie, Jess is now qualified to provide this service. This service will not replace Dr Ellie and we will, as always, work hard at retaining her services. Jess is available as an alternative, for patients who are unable to attend a standard Pap smear consultation with Dr Ellie. If you have any new symptoms (including pain, painful sex or abnormal bleeding or discharge) in the time between your tests, make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible to discuss these changes. WHY YOU DIAL 000 INSTEAD OF RINGING THE DOCTOR IN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY? In any medical emergency, the quickest way to receive medical attention is to ring 000. Ringing the Doctor’s Surgery or the hospital means we would need to then dial 000! This creates an unnecessary and dangerous time delay while we do this. We cannot stress the importance of you, or someone with you, dialling 000 for any medical emergency. Once you contact 000, they will set the wheels in motion to provide you with medical attention. They will contact the Hospital and the Hospital will contact the Doctor. 000 in any medical emergency is the first number you dial. DID YOU KNOW
Human hair is tough. It’s the reason it clogs drains. While human hair can be burnt, it is not much affected by water, cold, heat, climate changes, wear and tear, or natural decay. It even resists many kinds of acids and chemicals.
You cannot tickle yourself! There have been some lame explanations for this, stating that since your brain knows you’re tickling yourself, it does not respond the same way. Since it is possible to pinch yourself, that argument does not hold up. The medical mystery is that even the most ticklish person cannot tickle themself.
Your brain sees the world upside down. When the rods and cones of your retina send an image to the brain – say you’re looking at a tree – the image transmitted to the brain is upside down. The brain automatically rotates the image in its’ visual cortex. Babies learn to do this early on. It’s so automatic you do not know you’re doing it. PLAYING TOURIST Written by Tamara Spark. If you happened to scroll upon some of the pictures and the short video the Quairading CRC uploaded to Facebook after our Local Bus Tour a couple of weekends back you might be kicking yourself for missing out… and rightly so. Spring turnt up!!! We had a variable mix of personalities from a span of the generations and a solid tour guide and bus driver in Jo Hayes. Once we were sufficiently stocked with refreshments from the local purveyor of Vodka, well, perhaps I instead of we would be more apt, we started the day with a whip around Dangin and then out to Lake Mears, via the famous Subi Lion. Here I must address the perfection of the colour and clarity of the lake that day, while Jill’s photography skills are adept the faultlessness of the photo may rouse suspicions of photo doctoring in some but I assure you it is a true representation of the stunning view we were afforded that day. Then it was on to the South Carolling Tennis Club, hall and church (might have trespassed through Geoff and Janet Hall’s farm). To ensure the experience was well rounded and had an educational component we stopped at the new Stacey Lamb Train sign and Rabbit Proof Fence site and were lucky enough to have some Stacey’s with us to fill in any gaps in knowledge. This was expertly timed to occur before we were too intoxicated by all of the beautiful sights we were soaking up and also the alcohol. Next up was the bustling Kwolyin Camp Site (no sarcasm intended, it was literally crawling with campers), Kokerbin Rock, Mt Stirling Church, Pink Lake, followed by the not-to-miss historic Quairading Club (rehydration stop) and finishing up at Toapin Weir. By now we were running out of daylight hours but the weir provided as nice a locale to watch the sun set as any, in fact it may have been this romantic setting that prompted some (definitely only one) to strip off and baptise themselves in the curing waters. As a newbie to this area might I say you have TOO many local gems to fit into a day trip! I advise you to jump on the next local tour, it was a beaut day all round. Can I please give a huge thanks to Jo Hayes for volunteering/succumbing to pressure to be bus driver and tour guide, the day wouldn’t have been possible without you. 12 Banksia Bulletin October 2017

Where is this year going, it is October already !!!!!! NOT going to any big department stores in Perth because they will have everything Christmas out on display, I just want the year to slow down abit… We had the best weekend just gone at Loosies, we hosted Helen Stubbings who is a pattern and fabric designer known world wide. Helen lives in Tasmania and travelled to WA to do workshops in Geraldton, Perth and Quairading. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Trunk Show on Saturday and participated in the workshop on Sunday, we could not have bought Helen to Quairading without your support THANK YOU J ______________________________________________________________________________

WARRIOR WELLBEING ARTICLE Capacity, A Wellbeing Driver A word that I feel is over used and out of context in the modern world today is the word ‘resilience’ and I would like to question the use of that word. There is even a whole industry built around ‘resilience’ in the form of providing training and education services in this space.
We are all born with a random capacity to deal with life’s issues. It is a bit like a rubber band and we all know and recognise an individual’s capacity to operate fully, half, or to not appear stretched at all. No matter what we are challenged by, we all have ups and downs, and the word ‘capacity’ allows us to capture our entire range of Resilience is the correct word if used in the qualities be they good, bad or ugly and to context of a person’s ability to ‘bounce back’ then carry on and cope with what hand we are dealt with. ie. recovering from shock or trauma. HOW OUR LIVES WILL CHANGE DRAMATICALLY IN 20 YEARS Posted by David Delahunty via LinkedIn.
The following points are taken from Udo Gollub, the CEO of 17 Minute Languages after attending the Singularity University summit in San Francisco.
Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years. Uber is just a software tool, they don't own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don't own any properties. Artificial Intelligence: Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world. This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected. In the US, young lawyers already don't get jobs. Because of IBM Watson, you can get legal advice (so far for more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans. So if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% less lawyers in the future, only specialists will remain. Watson already helps nurses diagnosing cancer, 4 times more accurate than human nurses. Facebook now has a pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans. In 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans. Autonomous cars: In 2018 the first self driving cars will appear for the public. Around 2020, the complete industry will start to be disrupted. You don't want to own a car anymore. You will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it, you only pay for the driven distance and can be productive while driving. Our kids will never get a driver's licence and will never own a car. It will change the cities, because we will need 90-95% less cars for that. We can transform former parking spaces into parks. 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide. We now have one accident every 60,000 miles (100,000 km), with autonomous driving that will drop to one accident in 6 million miles (10 million km). That will save a million lives each year. Most car companies will probably become bankrupt. Traditional car companies try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build a computer on wheels. Many engineers from Volkswagen and Audi; are completely terrified of Tesla. Insurance companies will have massive trouble because without accidents, the insurance will become 100x cheaper. Their car insurance business model will disappear. Real estate will change. Because if you can work while you commute, people will move further

away to live in a more beautiful neighbourhood. Electric cars will become mainstream about 2020. Cities will be less noisy because all new cars will run on electricity. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean: Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can now see the burgeoning impact. Last year, more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil. Energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid to prevent competition from home solar installations, but that can't last. Technology will take care of that strategy. With cheap electricity comes cheap and abundant water. Desalination of salt water now only needs 2kWh per cubic meter (@ 0.25 cents). We don't have scarce water in most places, we only have scarce drinking water. Imagine what will be possible if anyone can have as much clean water as he wants, for nearly no cost. Health: The Tricorder X price will be announced this year. There are companies who will build a medical device (called the "Tricorder" from Star Trek) that works with your phone, which takes your retina scan, your blood sample and you breath into it. It then analyses 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly any disease. It will be cheap, so in a few years everyone on this planet will have access to world class medical analysis, nearly for free. Goodbye, medical establishment. 3D printing: The price of the cheapest 3D printer came down from $18,000 to $400 within 10 years. In the same time, it became 100 times faster. All major shoe companies have already started 3D printing shoes. Some spare airplane parts are already 3D printed in remote airports. The space station now has a printer that eliminates the need for the large amount of spare parts they used to have in the past. At the end of this year, new smart phones will have 3D scanning possibilities. You can then 3D scan your feet and print your perfect shoe at home. In China, they already 3D printed and built a complete 6-storey office building. By 2027, 10% of everything that's being produced will be 3D printed. Business opportunities: If you think of a niche you want to go in, ask yourself: "in the future, do you think we will have that?" and if the answer is yes, how can you make that happen sooner? If it doesn't work with your phone, forget the idea. And any idea designed for success in the 20th century is doomed to failure in the 21st century. Work: 70-80% of jobs will disappear in the next 20 years. There will be a lot of new jobs, but it is not clear if there will be enough new jobs in such a small time. Agriculture: There will be a $100 agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their field instead of working all day on their fields. Aeroponics will need much less water. The first Petri dish produced veal, is now available and will be cheaper than cow produced veal in 2018. Right now, 30% of all agricultural surfaces is used for cows. Imagine if we don't need that space anymore. There are several startups who will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more protein than meat. It will be labelled as "alternative protein source" (because most people still reject the idea of eating insects). There is an app called "moodies" which can already tell in which mood you're in. By 2020 there will be apps that can tell by your facial expressions, if you are lying. Imagine a political debate where it's being displayed when they're telling the truth and when they're not. Bitcoin may even become the default reserve currency ... Of the world! Longevity: Right now, the average life span increases by 3 months per year. Four years ago, the life span used to be 79 years, now it's 80 years. The increase itself is increasing and by 2036, there will be more than one year increase per year. So we all might live for a long long time, probably way more than 100. Education: The cheapest smart phones are already at $10 in Africa and Asia. By 2020, 70% of all humans will own a smart phone. That means, everyone has the same access to world class education. Every child can use Khan academy for everything a child needs to learn at school in First World countries. There have already been releases of software in Indonesia and soon there will be releases in Arabic, Suaheli and Chinese this summer. I can see enormous potential if we give the English app for free, so that children in Africa and everywhere else can become fluent in English and that could happen within half a year.

Now 54 years old I believe I am in a good position to contribute to the continued development of our shire. I have been involved with landcare groups both at catchment level and the LCDC for many years and, as a partner on a family farm, try to include these ideals into my farming practises. I have represented the Quairading Football Club both as a player and in administration. I am also currently involved with the Curtain Raiser’s amateur theatre group which brings together many community members. I am renominating to continue as a councillor on the Quairading shire. Currently 55 years of age, I am married to Carolyn and have 3 grown up children. I reside in the community on a mostly cropping and sheep farm in the north west of the Shire which I run in conjunction with my wife Carolyn, brother Roger and recently returned home son Mitchell and his fiancĂŠ Sophie. The family originally came from the UK in May 1830 and took up farming in the Guildford area before going further east to York and then branching out to Doodenanning in 1923 to where we currently farm today. My schooling days were to Year 10 at QDHS and then 2 years at Cunderdin Agricultural College before returning home to the farm. My father passed away at a young age and together with my brother were thrown in the deep end to manage our farm. I have had extensive involvement through many organisations and committees within our town holding many office bearer positions and chairmanship within these and feel I have a good grasp of community aspirations and needs. There are massive challenges for our small community moving forward with shrinking external funding and increase in costs,community demands and services, this is a real juggling act and I wish to continue to represent you all in the best way possible and provide good governance. These small communities are unique and should be preserved and progressed into the future. I have enjoyed my previous 6 years on Council and wish to continue to see the many projects in the pipeline come to fruition therefore I seek your support in the up and coming election on the 21st October.

From the Green…. 2017 Golf Wrap Up Well another golfing year has almost finished with only the mixed closing day to be held this Sunday October 1st. Approximately 60 members have enjoyed, at various times, the Quairading Golf Course this year. With the amount of rain we’ve had it has made for a very green and lush course (dare I say it… a bit too lush at times!!) A number of events have been held in the Ladies, Men’s and Mixed competitions and although entry numbers have been down in some of the events, Quairading always manages to put on a great day with our beautiful course, wonderful catering and great companionship at the 19th hole. The ladies have hosted the annual Charity day, run by the Hospital Auxiliary Ladies, raising much needed funds for the Auxiliary and RFDS and the prestigious Shattock Cup, won by our very own Sharon Richards. These open days are run very efficiently by our own playing members but we’d especially like to thank our lady golfers of the past who happily volunteer to do many jobs on the day like helping in the kitchen and selling raffle tickets. Without their help we truly couldn’t have such a successful day, so once again, thank you very much. The men have also hosted a number of open days but for the first time the Dolin Cup was combined with the Primaries 4BBB and held over one day instead of the usual two. It proved to be a very successful event with local golfer Greg Logan taking out the coveted Dolin Cup. The biggest event of our golfing calendar, after a year of solid and busy planning, was the 10th Year of the Scott J Memorial Day and the 50th Anniversary of Junior Golf. There were 114 players in the field, many of them past junior golfers, with the winners being the team of Mick, Jo and Jordan Van Elden and Steve Wilton. Dinner was a magnificent and tasty array of curry dishes organised by Cath Richards. The atmosphere in the clubhouse was magnificent, so well done to the fabulous committee and helpers for organizing such a wonderful event. We look forward to a similar format for next year. In addition to hosting days at home, there have been a few major events that our local players have travelled to. In August, 16 Quairading Ladies went to Avon Valley in York and for the third time Sharon Richards took out the Championships. Quairading was also successful in the Gross Teams event with Anne Johnson, Barb Bond, Anthea Cousins and Sharon Richards taking out that title and the shield. A very excited Anthea exclaimed that she was so excited because she’d never won anything gross in her life!! Country week in September saw 8 ladies compete in the pairs day and 4 in the 36 hole event with Anne Johnson coming runner-up in the Nett Sands. So congratulations all round for those ladies. Over the past two months the Quairading Ladies and Men’s Championships have been held with some fantastic results. After a magnificent tussle which took the ladies to the 38th hole Sharon Richards won the championship with Di Wallwork being the runner-up. In the Plate Lisa Caporn was the winner there. In the Men’s final Keith Johnson won the Championship for the 19th time playing a flawless round with Stuart Wilson being the runner-up. In the Men’s B Grade Greg Logan won narrowly over Scott Richards. Congratulations to all players. One of the main aims of the Golf Club is to encourage new players, which is often a difficult task with so many other things going on in Quairading. It is with great pleasure that I include Anne Johnson’s report on the 9 Hole Golfers which did exactly this – bring some new people to golf. What Anne hasn’t said in her report is the number of volunteer hours she put in to coaching the girls and although she didn’t do it for the thanks that’s just what we’d like to extend to her. “It is with great delight we welcome our new Wednesday morning golfers to the club. We have seen some of these ladies join us for the 19th hole (the most important hole!!) Our numbers vary each week according to weather conditions, commitments and when the coach turns up! Thank you to Dallas Brown for bringing some of these girls in off the rinks!!! 9 ladies came along over the season for some coaching and course management. Most were returning past golfers but, encouragingly, 3 were entirely new to golf. We are a full bottle now on Ambrose, pars and birdies….well pars anyway! We even had a visitor from New Zealand join us for a hit and giggle one Wednesday. I am very excited to think we may have 2 or 3 of these girls come on up to 18 holes next year.” Rosie Duncan, as co-ordinator of the Junior golfers, has completed another very successful year with 19 juniors attending. Rosie is enthusiastic, hardworking, always seeks out advice and does everything to ensure her junior golfers are improving all the time but most importantly loving the game. Thanks Rosie and we look forward to you steering them again in 2018. In addition to encouraging new players/members, the golf club has also been and continues to be working on a number of different things with the following being a few examples: Updating the Constitution incorporating new laws and regulations Updating the Bi-laws and local rules Improving amenities within the clubhouse, e.g. upgrade to the office with new furniture and equipment, new white goods A new machinery shed and power to shed Having more members complete their RSA (Responsible Serving of Alcohol) certificate and possibly Manager’s course. The end of another football season has come and gone! Our ressies boys gave the finals a nice little nudge, but couldn’t quite make it through the preliminary. We’ve put in some good solid work this year and we’re looking forward to building on this next year and reaping the rewards, both on and off the field. We celebrated the season in style at the Winter Sports Ball, alongside the Quairading Netball Club and Quairading Ladies Hockey Club (congrats girls on bringing home a premiership and being super modest about it all night). Everyone (the Quairading Town Hall included) scrubbed up very nicely and the level of class was mostly maintained throughout the whole evening. Thank you and congratulations to everyone who contributed to the success of the event. We welcome all constructive feedback on how to make next year’s even better!
