Thanks to extra-shot flat whites (and the occasional upgrade to a jug of straight black coffee) we’ve nearly survived October! Hooly dooly, it’s been a time. The Ag Show: epic. The first two Curtain Raisers’ performances of Rock of Ages: also epic. It’s pretty hard not to put together epic things when there are so many Quairading legends involved! If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to the last two Rock of Ages performances coming up this weekend; soak it up and cheer for us loudly. On the CRC front—just this morning (Thursday 28th) we’ve had 10 brave (and better for it) locals enjoy Sunrise Yoga with Janet from Nourishabley! A cold and early start yes (one I didn’t have the bojangles for) Tamara assures me it was a beautiful morning and there’s calls to make it a weekly occurrence! Coming up in November, we’re holding an entertaining afternoon at the Town Hall with the comedy stage show “Big Purple Undies” by Lou Kelman. Lou’s show has been hotly requested by community members and between her long stints performing in Dubai, we’ve managed to lock her in for a performance in Quairading! This event, complete with a catered light afternoon tea, will somewhat replace previous annual Seniors Week events the CRC held and the Seniors Christmas Lunch the Shire held. Yay to collaborative events (and reducing the load on local volunteers). Lou also encourages you to wear some purple! The following week, Arthritis WA are bringing their seminar “Healthy, Wealthy & Wise” to the Quairading CRC. A free event, come along and hear from a couple of guest speakers and enjoy a light lunch. More details and important registration info on page 21. In non-work and community-group news, I’m heading off for a few days next week to carry out some Maid of Honour duties and watch my oldest and bestest friend get married, to her new best friend—I can’t wait. Congratulations Maddelin & Tom! See you in November. MEDICAL PRACTICE As of 1 November 2021, the price of scripts will increase to $20 each. Doctors have a duty of care to see you and prescribe you the correct medications on a regular bases. If you do not wish to pay $20 for a script, please make an appointment and you will be bulk billed. This decision has been made by Dr Ade and the Practice Manager. The surgery has both Astra Zenca and Pfizer Vaccines available. We are having weekly clinics. Please call to make an appointment, it is free. COUNCIL ELECTIONS Council has welcomed the 4 new Councillors (Cr EJ Cheang, Cr Jo Hayes, Cr Peter Smith and Cr Trevor Stacey) for their 4 year terms on Council at the Swearing in Ceremony held on Monday 18 October. Council has elected Cr Peter Smith to the office of Shire President for a 2 year term and Cr Trevor Stacey to the office of Deputy Shire President also for a 2 year term.
BANKSIA BULLETIN WATER BOMBER RELOADING TRAINING Water bomber reloading training will take place on Sunday 7 November at the Quairading Air Strip. Anyone wanting to learn is welcome to attend, either as a refresher, if they have participated in previous years, or for those that who have not attended and would be interested in learning. FIREBREAK AND BUSHFIRE HAZARD REDUCTION NOITICE Land owners and residents in the Quairading Shire District are required to ensure their property meets the Shire’s firebreak and fire hazard reduction requirements on or before 31 October and thereafter maintained until 31 March annually to reduce the risk of fire in the community.

As of the 1st of November… The Quairading Doctors will no longer be issuing scripts without an appointment. You will need to book an appt to see your GP before your medications / scripts run out or expire. This change will be for your continuity of care and continued Dr/patient relationship. Please check your scripts and book and appointment…
Movember fundraisers are a global community of fired up Mo Bros and Mo Sisters making a difference in mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Your donation could help save a father, a brother, a son, a friend, a partner, a man’s life.

Other News Congratulations to our Practice Manager, Karleen on her performance with her Miniature Pony, Minielf Sheza Rose (Rosie).. Karleen and Rosie competed in the WA State Championships. They came home RESERVE CHAMPION.. 2nd in the whole WA state. Ag Show of the century! Bush Tucker Garden beginnings Last Friday 22 October, co-hosted by the Quairading CRC, Quairading DHS had a visit from the team at Tucker Bush™ and Bindi Bindi Dreaming as well as parents and community members, with all on hands on deck to help the Secondary students plant their Bush Tucker Garden. It was a successful day with everyone helping to plant trees, enjoy morning tea and a yarn. All in attendance learned about the different types of bush tucker plants, and how to care, use, cook and eat them—because food is medicine! A big thank you to everyone involved from the initial planning and design, sourcing grant funds, preparing the site, planting and educating! This has been a really fantastic community effort from so many including, but not limited to, QDHS Staff, Quairading CRC, Shire of Quairading, Digging Docker, parents and families that came along to help, and visitors dropping in to see our progress. It is great to see strong relationships between our students and members and Elders of our community. The next phase of the project will involve putting in place a good sustainable retic system to water the garden (until then it’s buckets of water every two days!). There is still a wish list of future plants to add to the garden but planted so far is river mint, native thyme, pig face, salt bush/samphire, youlk (bush potato/carrot), warrigal greens, warrine (native yam) and Jam Wattle. If you were wondering here are just a few of the benefits of our Community Bush Tucker Garden: Connection to the land and Noongar history. Developing “nature smarts” from an early age through first-hand experiences. Strengthening understanding and awareness of food and biodiversity. Practising teamwork, communication and critical thinking skills in an interesting setting. Getting hands-on learning opportunities outside the sedentary classroom environment. Learning about plants, soil, water, pests and beneficial insects. Eating herbs and veggies grown and nurtured firsthand by the students. Numerous and ongoing STEM opportunities Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the Bush Tucker Garden Project, the secondary students have so many plans for the growth of this fantastic project and the more community engagement and involvement the better! Some of the future plans include: construction of the fire pit log seating area creating smaller paths lining the bigger paths mulching building a Mia Mia and other sculptures designing a shelter creating signage & banners building and programing an Arduino Robotic Irrigation Controller with solenoids Farmbot installation in boxes Hold an official opening! The beginning phase of this ongoing project has been funded by the Quairading CRC through a WA Inspiring Australia grant aimed at facilitating projects that add value to the Western Australian STEM culture.

Quairading Football Club President’s Report 2021 With an absence of football in the Avon during the season of 2020, the beginning of the new season of 2021 had a feeling of excitement and expectation, but also a familiar ease. With the return of our playing group and the addition of some new faces, Paul Dilena’s hard work and communication with our players showed reward at our first game of the season against Cunderdin. This was followed by a meet and greet dinner. For Paul, football never stops. Regular contact with myself and the player group during the off season is just one of his many assets and by early January the players in the metro had begun pre season training. At home in Quairading at this time the boys are invested in cricket but the thought of football is never far away. After his first season of coaching at the Bulls was put on hold, Ryan Powell was keen to get things underway and by mid February training in Q town was up and running. With the committee’s decision to plant lupins in the cropping paddocks, seeding was completed by late April. Thank you to Brendon Stone for pre-emergent spraying and Greg Hayes and Braden Hayes for trash tilling Jonesy’s paddock to deal with a large amount of caltrop. Jake Stacey took care of seeding operations and Andrew Green contract sprayed all post emergents. Having Andrew come and do the crop spray took the pressure off club members trying to fit this in while busy with their own programs. Thank you also to Terry Andrews for checking the crop and organising chemical. By mid May both the league and reserves had a strong position in the competition holding second spot on the ladder in both grades. A Saturday home game on May 22nd gave the club an opportunity to hold the 1990/1991 double premiership reunion, with over 40 past players and partners enjoying a luncheon while reminiscing, then a few drinks at the bulls bar during the league game, then staying on late into the night after post game awards. It was a great day for the club. As the year continued on the league boys battled with York to claim top position while the reserves suffered a mid season slump and hovered between 4th and 5th. With the district enjoying wet conditions during seeding and the club’s great year to date, we headed to the annual running of the Mutton Cup with a positive feeling throughout Q. The Mutton Cup has become a major event since it’s beginnings and is now an event that can come together quite easily and is a great fundraiser for the club. Thanks to Jill Hayes and Braden Hayes for their efforts in bringing a quality field of runners and producing the form guide for the races, and to all who entered and attended and stayed on to dance the night away to party band Rogue. From here on the season gained pace and before we knew it, the last round and finals were looming. With full credit to Paul and the league squad they finished the year in top position on the ladder, an achievement that the club hasn’t had in over ten years. I would like to acknowledge Andrew Walker as his role as league captain this year and over the past three years Dre’s dedication and leadership alongside Paul and past captain Sean Hayes has been pivotal to the Bulls resurgence as a successful club. Combined with a genuinely good group of players, there is comfortable ease throughout the player group from league right through the reserves. With a touch of luck and a squad of players that regrouped to full strength, the reserves scraped their way to the finals. Ryan showed good coaching and a strong belief in his players to lead them to what I believe are two of the greatest ressies wins in recent history. A 4 point win against Railways in the 1st semi thanks to an amazing 5 minute 3 goal burst from Theo Hayden and Anthony Hayden. The second was a 14 point win against York who dominated the competition all year and had soundly beaten us on our last two meetings. PAGE 38

Come from behind nail biting wins became a pattern for the Bulls finals campaign, in the league second semi our boys fought back from a 22 point deficit to kick 5 unanswered goals in the last quarter to win by 8 points over York. Two teams in the grand final, a feat that hasn’t happened since 2008. An amazing achievement. Sadly the grand finals didn’t play out in our favour. After a galant and proud performance the reserves went down by 16 points to a quality Keller/Tammin side. The future of our football players shone out in the finals with great performances from Lachie Dann, Declan Mills, Ciaran Allsop and Jeremy Allsop. Cunderdin became the story of 2021 with their emergence as a fast running, skilful team that peaked at exactly the right time. Unfortunately our league boys could not find an answer during what was a fast paced and physical grand final, to eventually go down by 17 points. Although the feel of defeat is bitter and disappointing, I only have pride for the results, hard work and effort that the Quairading Football Club has put in to get to the position we are now. To slightly sweeten the losses, we can walk away with some incredible individual rewards. Congratulations must go to Lachlan Dann for taking out the Avon Football Association’s Reserves Fairest & Best player award and Ryan Maldenis for joint AFA League Fairest & Best player. Hollee Siviour was also named joint MVP for the association netball for the Belles. An incredible achievement by these players. Our awards night was held at Greenhills Inn with nearly 100 players and supporters in attendance. This was a great celebration of the year and the success of the club and of individuals. Some rousing and emotional speeches were made and the hunger for a next season win was evident. Congratulations to Braden Hayes for taking out Reserves F&B, with Lachie Dann runner up, and to Steven Payne for being League F&B, with Ryan Maldenis coming in second. So many sponsors ,volunteers, committee, trainers, coaches and players give such a large amount of their personal time to allow the football club to survive. It is with great appreciation that I would like to thank each and every one. In summary, the season of 2021 is one we can all be proud of. We have become stronger as a club. Our club is an enjoyable and comfortable place to be and what makes it this way are the people we have within. Quality people with a common goal for this footy club to not only survive but improve on every level. Thank you to you all and I look forward to what is still to come. QFC President Lyall Brown

Introducing: Community Vision! Community Vision held a community information day on Tuesday 19th October at the Quairading community building. We had Community Vison staff provide information around disability and aged care supports that can be provided in our community. Our aim is to support eligible people with a disability to: Connect with services and service providers Assist NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) clients with transport, appointments, individual home support, and Act as an Advocate when required. Loose Stitches I was told the other day that it is only 8 weeks—give or take a day—’til Christmas, where has 2021 gone? I suppose when you are busy the time does fly and we have been flat out at Loosies this past month. We hosted 50 lovely ladies from WAQA (Western Australian Quilters Assoc.) on Saturday the 16th, the weather was perfect. This was part of their annual ‘Shop Hop’ where the ladies jump on a bus and visit country quilt shops around the state. We decked out the courtyard next to Loosies with quilts, it was a mini ‘Airing of the Quilts’ and we had small tables and chairs on the footpath Alfresco style (Thanks to the Co-op for the loan of the tables and chairs). Last weekend we were asked to take the shop down to the Adriatic Centre in Stirling to be a part of QuiltWest market place, there were 8 shops in total (we were the only country shop). QuiltWest is a chance for patchworkers and quilters to showcase their amazing talents, we were in awe of the many very talented people out there. November is shaping up to be as busy as October. As well as our usual monthly get togethers we are hosting: Melbourne Cup Lunch Tuesday 2nd Nov, bring a small plate to share for lunch. Avon Valley Friendship Day on Saturday 13th – BYO lunch, the cost is $5, morning and arvo tea provided. We will have to reschedule the UFO Day, sorry! Christmas Party will be on Tuesday 7th December, please bring a small plate to share. We will be closing the shop for the holiday break on FRIDAY 17TH DECEMBER. Lights, Camera – Covid! Written by Peta West I know I get asked a lot about what is happening with the Quairading based film High Strangeness which I am producing, so I thought it was time to give the community another update. When you are basically a two-person team (behind the scenes) things take time. Our fantastic editor can spend 6 hours watching footage to find 2 seconds of film that is needed to splice in. It is a long process. Good news is that editing is over! We have moved into the sound/score stage of the film. This is where any dialogue gets redone in a sound studio, if need be, and bits like creaking floor boards, wind and all other sounds that we take for granted are added to the mix. Then don’t forget the music, and of course the opening credits. If you are a film buff or Netflix addict, you will know opening credits on television shows and movies are a big deal nowadays. Though we were hoping to have given our lovely community a preview of the film before the rest of the world. Things eventually caught up with us COVID wise, that and a major computer malfunction. Things are back on track and oh wow what a lot of worldwide press the film has been receiving, including an article in the world leading Science Fiction Magazine, and an article on one of the world's most famous horror news sites just to name two. You can see links to all the press via our website www.fracturedvisionsfilms.com in the news section. We have had a Grammy winning American rapper come on board to do voice work (as we needed a Californian accent) so one of our actors' voices had to be dubbed. We have also just had legendary Australian Actor Roger Ward come on board to do the narration of the opening credits. Roger is Ozploitation royalty and star of films such as Mad Max, Turkey Shoot among others. He has just recently finished production in a new John Jarratt film. We have another Australian/Hollywood film maker checking in on us, wanting involvement. Plus of course Australian iconic film maker Philippe Mora is our Executive Producer and is getting calls and emails regarding High Strangeness from press and film festivals. So please have some patience with us. Believe me, we know it has been a very long time. However, this has been basically self-funded, and with a two-person crew. If you check out the ending credits of any film, you can see what an accomplishment that is in itself. We are putting Quairading on the film map well and truly and we are very excited for what the future is going to bring. If you have questions, please ask... I am more than happy to answer. Plus, chat with the director Aaron (he’s not hard to miss, formal attire, loves the coop’s coffee). He doesn’t bite, and he is more than happy to chat about the film or films in general. Also, if you want to be involved – let us know, we have future projects in the works, including a series of short films over Summer. Then next year I am tackling an Australian adaption of Jane Eyre. Yes, you read correctly. I’m not all horror, Jane Eyre is actually my favourite book! We will let you now as soon as we are ready to have a screening in town. And yes, you will see High Strangeness before the rest of the world. We have a professional film audio engineer working on the sound etc right now! Exciting times indeed. PAGE 49

Quairading Junior Golf 2021 The Junior Golf season came to a close at the end of last term. What a cracking season it was, boasting a total of 19 junior golfers! We met at the Golf Club after school every Tuesday afternoon of Term 3. Once again, we were fortunate to secure three session of PGA coaching with Mr Rob Farley, from Marangaroo Golf Course. This year, we had all golfers out on course playing golf. We tailored their game to suit their ability and stamina, having some kids play 9 holes and some play 3 very short, modified holes. Thank you to all parents and grandparents who came along to chaperone the kids each week, junior golf couldn’t operate with out you. It was so lovely to see our walkers come in from the course wearing bigger smiles than the players! Proving that golf can be enjoyed by all ages, all abilities and non-golfers too! As always, a big thanks to the Quairading Golf Club who continue to support and encourage Junior Golf. The golf course looked spectacular all season. A special thanks to the Shire of Quairading’s Community Grants, which enabled us to purchase four new sets of golf sticks, bags and buggies. Warrior Wellbeing Coping with Change As individuals we all have a different capacity to handle life events and stress. This capacity and our own innate level of resilience is tested when challenged by change either on a personal front or in the workplace. Our life’s journey will have many unknowns and the only guarantee in that journey is that there will be change. Dealing with change will often throw up a number of variables. Some people are more at risk than others of becoming dysfunctional during the change process. From studies undertaken those who may struggle with change can be identified as follows: individuals who get meaning from a single purpose, like work. This is usually us blokes as we are primarily defined by our role and function e.g. our job. The social/spiritual dimension of most blokes often goes unexplored, and as blokes we just don’t talk about issues close to our heart; individuals whose role is threatened; individuals who are passionate about their role; individuals whose security is threatened. Research tells us that half the population will take change in their stride having little or no effect on their wellbeing. The other half of the population will be affected, and the percentage affected can be broken down into the following categories: 20% showing stress signs for up to six weeks (is this normal?) 20% showing stress signs for up to 12 months; 10% showing profound affects (chronic trauma – distress unresolved).
If we fit into one of the 20% or 10% categories, we need to seek support and have a chat to someone about our distress. It may be through our EAP (Employment Assistance Program), doctor or private counsellor and/or involve talking to a mate (close friend or a family member). Vocational wellbeing is extremely important because we spend a majority of our time at work. Some points we may want to consider before making decisions on the work we do, or making a change are: be happy and enjoy what we are doing; be passionate about what we are doing; keep the work life balance right; keep growing our experience, it’s never complete. Coping with change in our life is a daily event, sometimes not all the changes are good, especially around bureaucracy. To thrive we must work at it and even though it is challenging at times, the process of change often gives us new skills, increases our capacity and flexibility in life and quite often sends us off in a direction that we would never have allowed ourselves to go. Gardening in the Wheatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm At present it is indeed hard to believe that we live where we live. Is this the semi arid Central Wheatbelt or have we been picked up and moved two or three hundred kilometers further south? Never in our twenty one years of living in our wonderful part of the state have we experienced such unseasonal conditions. Not only have we enjoyed more rain than in previous years but the first two months of spring, bar two days of 30 and 31 degrees, have been mild if not downright cool. Whatever summer may bring, the tanks are full, the dams are full and any new plants put in last autumn have had the greatest start ever. Continue to enjoy and share your gardens, November is looking to be as mild as the rest of spring has been. Now a reminder that the Quairading Garden Lovers Group meets on the last Friday of the month at the Quairading Nursery at 10am. New members are always welcome. Also on the 29th October the QGLG is visiting the Lake House Nursery in Beverley 10am. There will be a short meeting before the tour of the nursery. They like to be kept quite crowded in their pots and take longer to flower once they are repotted. The pots can be kept indoors on an east or north facing windowsill, however, mine are outside. In autumn and winter they are in the sun and are then moved to shady position under a deciduous tree. The most simple way of fertilizing Orchids is with a slow release fertiliser designed for flowering plants. I urge everyone to try these plants for their forgiving nature but most of all for their beautiful flowers which last for weeks in a vase and even longer if the pot is brought inside while it is in flower.
