Have you seen MAMMA MIA! yet? Are you coming to watch this weekend? By gollies your answer had better be a big ol’ super troupin’ YES! We (and today by we, I mean Quairading Curtain Raisers) have had an absolute hoot putting this show together and performing it for incredibly jubilant audiences over the last couple of weekends. As we go to print we still have two shows left, so I shouldn’t speak too soon, but we’ve done a dang good job of it too! My community pride never really drops below a half cup full, but right now it’s spilling right over the top and all over my desk. Imma need a bigger cup. We’ll no doubt run some more photos and a shirt load of thank yous in next month’s Banksia Bulletin, so you just enjoy these couple of cover snaps for now. Though if you’re now finally starting to think that maybe you should come and check out what all the hype is about, just get yourself down to the Quairading Town Hall this Friday or Saturday night about 7:45pm and buy yourself a check door sale ticket and get amongst the fun! Believe it or not, I’ve also shown up to my day job a few times in the last month too. Selling over 700 MAMMA MIA TICKETS has kept us pretty busy at the Quairading CRC as has prepping and printing for another season of local sport, organising our Get Online Week event (held on the 17th Oct) AND coordinating the installation of the epic community mural by Luke O’Donohoe. Have you seen it yet?? We’re prepping heaps of info to create some signage to go along with the mural, stay tuned for all the details of the whats and whys of the final design! With harvest about to consume all aspects of life for many of you dear readers, we’ll be taking it a little easier here in town. But if anyone’s in need of a laugh (come on, who isn’t?) join us on Thursday 14th November for our Seniors Week Comedy Lunch! If you receive a script with no repeats, this could mean that your GP may need to see you for a medication review or simply that the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme has changed prescribing rules for that particular drug. You should make an appointment to discuss this with your GP. Appointment Times – A standard appointment allows for a 15 minute consultation. Should you have several health issues or believe that you require a long consult please advise reception when booking your appointment. This in turn reduces the waiting times for other patients. Measles Alert – Media Release from the Department of Health What is measles - Measles is a highly infectious disease that is usually spread through air-borne droplets of the virus. It can have serious complications. Measles is one of the most easily spread of all human infections. Just being in the same room as someone with measles can result in transmission of infection. It can also be spread through direct contact with the mucous membranes of an infected person, and by touching articles freshly soiled with the mucous and saliva of an infected person. Everyone born during or after 1966 should be vaccinated against measles. In the past, measles infection was very common in childhood. Now, due to immunisation, measles infection is rare in Australia. It is skiing time in NZ and there are a lot of people travelling there for holidays. There is the potential that individuals born after 1966 and before 1992 who would have only had one measles vaccine and as a consequence of this are not adequately protected against measles Getting a second measles vaccine in this cohort is free but the uptake in this age group has been very poor so there are a lot of young people at risk out in the community. “Health authorities in Australia are bracing themselves for a major measles outbreak in Byron Bay after a child returned from a trip to New Zealand carrying the highly contagious disease. There has now also been confirmed measles infection in the southern suburbs of Perth metropolitan region. New Zealand is in the midst of a huge surge in measles cases, with almost 900 in Auckland and more than 1100 confirmed cases notified across the country. The outbreak in New Zealand is being closely monitored in Australia, with doctors pleading with parents not to travel to countries dealing with outbreaks if anyone in their family is not immunised. SO PLEASE: If you were born after 1966 and before 1992 check your vaccination records and if you CAN NOT SEE that you have had two (2) Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccinations book yourself in to get a free government vaccination. As with people doing more and more overseas holidays the risk of it coming back into Australia – WA- and Quairading is very high as it is highly contagious. CONSUMABLES - These additional charges are attached to both Bulk Billing and Private fees for ALL patients. Either Private or Bulk Billing Fees apply when you attend for a consultation. Consumables are items we must purchase for use during a patient’s consultation and this cost must be covered by the patient with or without a Commonwealth concession card and is payable at time of consult. The cost of the consumable to private patients will be billed as a separate item at the time of your consult as it is not covered by Medicare or private health fund. Examples of consumables which attract a separate fee for ALL patients include, but not limited to; Ear irrigation (ear syringe) $10.00 Spirometry (testing of lung capacity) $5.00 Pregnancy testing (including Lady Doctor Visits) $10.00 Removal of Foreign Body from eye (using Algerbrush burr) $15.00 INR (Testing Warfarin levels) $5.00 Liquid Nitrogen $10.00 first visit, $5.00 subsequent visit for same lesion

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AT QUAIRADING DHS Digital systems are everywhere, mobile and desktop devices and networks are transforming learning, recreational activities, home life and work. Digital systems support new ways of collaborating and communicating, and require new skills such as computational and systems thinking. Technologies are an essential problem-solving toolset in our knowledge-based society. Digital Technologies empower students to shape change by influencing how contemporary and emerging information systems and practices are applied to meet current and future needs. A deep knowledge and understanding of information systems enables students to be creative and discerning decision-makers when they select, use and manage data, information, processes and digital systems to meet needs and shape preferred futures. Digital Technologies enables students to become innovative creators of digital solutions, effective users of digital systems and critical consumers of information conveyed by digital systems. This term in Digital Technologies, the year 1/2 class have been exploring the software and hardware components of digital systems and have used digital systems to capture, transfer, download and store information. The 2/3/4 class have been focussing on data and developing their abilities to recognise, collect, access, present and represent different types of data to create information and solve problems. The 5/6 students have been examining how whole numbers are used to represent data and acquire, store and validate different types of data. While the secondary students have graduated from block based coding to a language based coding and have begun to dabble with Python coding language. Students from years 1-4 have also engaged with the cybersafety book series written by West Australian author, Kim Maslin. The Tweeting Galah and The Surfing Penguin are designed to educate children how to be safe and happy online and have been very successful with engaging students on these pressing issues.

Being a member of a council or board is an important and rewarding role that contributes greatly to the success of our school. PHOTO CLUB NEWS Written by Russell Stacey (Club Promotion Officer) PHOTO COMPETITION WINNERS GOLD: Geoff Hall SILVER: Janet Hall BRONZE: David Whyte
Congratulations to Ron Black’s granddaughter, Laura Nicol (who is Julie’s daughter) for winning the Photo Club’s competition for the Best Single Portrait Photo at the recent Quairading Ag Show. This portrait pic was voted by people’s choice and Laura got 25 votes with a black and white pic she had taken. The sitter in her pic was her grandad Ron Black. Second place with 23 votes was Jen Green who entered a pic of her daughter (Anika ) and third place with 11 votes was Russell Stacey who entered a pic of Mary Clemens. The winning pic has been mounted onto our trophy and is now on display at the QDG CAFÉ. The major prize at the Quairading Ag Show for Photography is the best overall photograph award, this was won by Jen Green who entered a pic in the single portrait section. There were 312 pics entered in the show and the photo Jen took was of her daughter Anika. Other best pic awards went to George Wishart for best black and white pic and Russell Stacey for best 6x4 standard pic. During the year I take lots of pics to enter in the Quairading Ag Show, this is the easy part when compared to sorting through a pile of pics, trying to pick out pics that have all the thingys in a photo that would persuade the judge to like your pic. It can take days to decide what pic to enter in a competition if you have a bundle of pics to chose from, using all the skills that you have learnt at photo club to decide what is a best pic. Having done all that effort for 34 sections, I then after the Quairading Ag Show decided to enter some pics in the Kellerberrin Show, getting awarded 3 first and 3 second prizes. It is interesting that some of my pics that got no awards at the Quairading Ag Show got awarded first prize at Keller & some pics that got first prize in QDG got no awards at Keller. There is a little bit of excitement entering a pic into competitions, thinking to yourself will this pic that I have chosen be awarded a prize by the judge & will the photo be liked by other persons.
Our annual Photo Club Calendar is being printed and will be ready soon, so it can be posted overseas as a Christmas gift and will be fully loaded with Australiana pics taken right here in Quairading. We receive lots of comments of how fantastic the pics are in our Calendar, and how people overseas who get our calendar as a Christmas gift are so envious of our lifestyle captured in the pics. The big blue skies, sunny days, unique animals and pics of Quairading all make our calendar the best available anywhere on this planet. This makes a great gift to send overseas and also to anyone else, so make sure you buy a calendar to help us at least cover the costs of producing the calendar. Next year for our calendar that will be ready to be on sale at the 100th Quairading Ag Show. We are asking everybody to have ago, not just photo club members at having your photograph included in that calendar. You can take a pic of what ever you want, the only rule is that it has to be taken within the shire boundaries of Quairading. For this calendar to be ready for sale in October next year we need your pics by the middle of August 2020. If you start taking some pics now so we will have pics from lots of different months not just all taken the week before the cut off date is due. The first step is simply make a folder and label it QDG Photo Club pics & go from there. Then challenge yourself to put in one pic every week into the folder. By doing this you will start to enjoy taking pics & you will notice your improvement slowly develop with each pic. We need pics of everything, think about doing something Quirky, outside the box with subjects like shapes, textures, action, monochromatic or something that evokes emotion and starts up a conversation, pics that are unique to Quairading and what we do in this part of the world. We need pics pertaining to what we do in Quairading each month and those pics will go on in the calendar for that month. There is a folder setup at the QDG CRC to collect your photos, we want lots of pics to chose from . You can then use your pics again to enter in the photography section at the 2020 Quairading Ag Show or even better come along to photo club & use them at our meetings. Last month at our October meeting we had the subject BACK ALLEYS for the photo competition. We had pics taken in Quairading and also in Perth. We all managed to come out of these Back Alleys alive and not have our cameras stolen. BACK ALLEYS was a subject that limited what you could photograph which made it all the more interesting to snap a pic. Most of the pics were pics that told a story type photograph. Our subject for next month is PEELING PAINT. Here is our reminder if you would like to come to our meetings please come along, just rock up. GARDENING IN THE WHEATBELT Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm We must be thankful for our mild spring. So far the days have been warm and the nights cool, all in all great gardening weather. The end of October may have had a sting in its tail but it has just served to remind us gardeners that shade, mulch and judicious watering are what will get our plants through the summer that is coming. The sun seems to have a bite which must be heeded to keep safe. So this is another reminder to stay out of the sun between the hours of 10am and 3pm. We’ve heard all this before but it’s not only best for our health but also for our gardens. So remember, it’s best to water in the morning before 9am, especially if it’s going to be a hot day, that way plant roots will have enough moisture to cope with day and you’ll be safely inside before the sun gets too severe.

The pea crop was a record breaker this year, two rows of peas produced just under 11 kilos of peas for our freezer although quite a few never made it that far. WARRIOR WELLBEING Our Wellbeing During Adolescent Transition Transition periods are a normal part of life, they are ongoing through our many different ages and stages and are often associated with varying aspects of change or moving out of our comfort zone. Most young people, regardless of attending agricultural college or mainstream high school, growing up on a farm or in the city (both male & female) will have experienced some form of change in recent years. Whether developmentally (puberty), moving away from home, creating new friendships or the expectations placed on you around attitude, behaviour and study requirements, change is inevitable.
This all sounds a bit negative I know but the good news is that if we talk about these things, normalise our reactions and push through these times the boundaries of our comfort zone will grow and expand. We can gain satisfaction and meaning from getting through such times. There will always be some hold-ups, knock-backs, days when we question our decisions and things just won’t go our way. Transition is a process, so you need to allow some time to settle in and adjust before you can survive and thrive.
At this time of the year many young people (and their parents) are taking important steps to prepare for the final stages of their high school journey and transition into the beginning of their working lives. If you are one of these young people and reading this article it shows at least two things: 1. You have already survived and thrived through one very significant time of change and transition; 2. Periods of transition come with a new set of challenges that may put us under pressure. Moving out of our comfort zone means exposing ourselves to new and unfamiliar situations and can often lead to: uncertainty and discomfort; having to create new routines and habits (sleep can be affected); feelings of fear, worry or anxiousness (this is normal, but if it’s ongoing and intense seek help); Increase in stress levels (some stress helps us operate during difficult times, but we need manage and keep an eye on our stress levels).
Accept change as a part of life “stop wishing for what was and enjoy what is”; Talk to your parents, peers and mentors about how you’re feeling; Make time for your passions & interests; Exercise and take time to relax. No one can work or study 24/7, time out is an important part of your wellbeing and stress management; Stay socially connected and take time to laugh with others (not just on social media, get out and create opportunities to form new friendships and surround yourself with real people); Avoid drugs and alcohol use. If you do choose to drink (when you’re 18) moderation and knowing your limits are vital; Use help or support services, they are there for a reason.

MIDDLE EASTERN LAMB KOFTA MEATBALLS Recipes courtesy of onceuponachef.com
INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup each pine nuts, almonds, and walnuts (total 3/4 cup) 1 small yellow onion, roughly chopped 3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1 small red bell pepper, roughly chopped 1 small jalapeño pepper, seeds and ribs removed, roughly chopped (see note) 1/2 cup cilantro leaves, gently packed (okay to substitute parsley) 2 pounds ground lamb 3/4 teaspoon ground cumin Heaping 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Heaping 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom Heaping 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon white pepper * Tzatziki and hummus, for serving
METHOD Step 1: Place the nuts in a bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Pulse until finely chopped but not pasty. Transfer the nuts to a small dry skillet over medium heat; cook, stirring frequently, until the nuts are lightly browned and fragrant, 5 to 6 minutes. Pour the nuts into mixing bowl large enough to hold all of the ingredients, and set aside to cool. (Don't leave the nuts in the pan, as the residual heat may cause them to burn.) Step 2: Place the onion, garlic, bell pepper, jalapeño pepper, and cilantro in the bowl of the food processor (no need to clean it first). Pulse until the vegetables are finely minced but not puréed. Set a fine sieve over a medium bowl. Transfer the minced vegetables to the sieve and use a rubber spatula to press out as much liquid as possible. Add the strained vegetable mixture to the bowl with the nuts. Step 3: To the veggies and nuts, add the lamb, cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, salt, and white pepper. Using your hands, mash the mixture together until evenly combined. Step 4: Line a baking sheet with alfoil. Form the mixture into patties about 2 inches in diameter and 1/2-inch thick (they will puff up on the grill to look like meatballs). Place on the baking sheet and cover with plastic wrap, then refrigerate until ready to cook. Step 5: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and oil the grates. Place the kofta on the grill and cook, covered, until browned, about 4 per side or until cooked through. Serve with Note—If you like your kofta spicy, reserve some of the seeds from the jalapeno pepper and add them with the vegetables. Also, be sure to wash your hands well after handling hot peppers, and do not touch your eyes while working with them. Handy Hint 1 -Make-Ahead: The patties can be made and refrigerated up to two days ahead of time. Handy Hint 2-The uncooked patties can be frozen for up to three months. (Freeze the patties on a baking sheet or plate so their shape sets, then transfer them to a sealable plastic bag for easy storage.) Defrost the patties overnight in the refrigerator prior to serving and then cook as directed. PAGE 51

QUAIRADING AQUATIC CLUB 2019/2020 SEASON OPEN It’s nearly pool season which means the Quairading Aquatic Club are getting ready to kick off for another fantastic season. For those thinking about getting their kids involved-come on down, its loads of fun!! Our club is all about giving kids the opportunity to develop their swimming skills and endurance in a safe and supportive environment. Swimming is a lifelong skill and it is a pleasure to see every child make their own individual improvements from the start to the finish of our season, whether it be their endurance, stroke technique or race timesoften it’s all three!! The important stuff: Thursday 7th November will be registration & a light training at the pool Training is held on Monday’s, approximate times are 3.20-3.50pm for junior dolphins, 4pm-4.45pm for our middle group and 4pm5pm for our upper group (groups & times may change) Time trials are held on Thursday’s-swimmers need to be at the pool at 3.15pm ready to go 2019/2020 season fees-$110-needs to paid prior to or on registration day (except new junior dolphins). KIDSPORT available. For duty of care, for both the pool and the club, children 10 & under must have a parent or guardian present to enter the Quairading pool, and they must remain present at the pool to supervise their child for the duration of swimming club training and time trials. It is recommended to organise a season ticket for pool entry at the shire. Quairading Aquatic Club requires each parent/ guardian to volunteer several times throughout the season due to the high volume of people it takes to run the clubs activities. This is a non-negotiable requirement when joining the club. What your child needs-any racing swimwear (our club colours are black/red/white), goggles, sunscreen, water bottle and a cap if preferred. As per last year, current members will need to complete their registration & pay their fees via the portal link emailed to them from Swimming PAGE 56
WA prior to registration day. For new members, Carol Dall will be at the pool with her laptop to walk you through the process. Please bring a means of paying for your membership online. Junior dolphins will kick off at 3.20 with a ‘have a go’ session The junior dolphins program is targeted at kids from Pre-Primary to Year 3 who are very keen swimmers but not strong enough yet to swim a full lap. Junior dolphins will run on a Monday afternoon from 3:20 – 3:50pm (coaching) and Thursday afternoon (one-two lap races). During coaching, children will be taught how to swim strokes (not swimming lessons). Each child will have to have an adult with them in the water at all times-this is not negotiable. During the initial ‘have a go’ session, it will be at the coaches discretion to decide whether the junior dolphins program will be a good fit for your child based on their skills and ability to follow instructions at a reasonable rate, thus allowing the coaching to progress in efficient manner. If the program is deemed suitable for your child, registration needs to be completed immediately after the first session. QUAIRADING JUNIOR NETBALL Junior Netball for 2019 has been a busy season with lots of opportunities for our players to play Netball in Quairading, Beverley, Cunderdin, Kellerberrin, Tammin, Merredin and Northam. QFC PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2019 The search for a new league coach began in early October after a decision was made between the footy club and Mick Outridge, to not reinstate him for the 2019 season. To the club’s good fortune, a phone call and a coffee meeting found us with Paul Dilena as league coach. Since playing for the Bulls in 2007-2009, including our last premiership double of 2008, Paul has coached Norranda Hawks and Mt Lawley. He was well qualified and has proven to be a valuable asset to the club with his organization, dedication and passion. Paul hit the ground running. As soon as a handshake secured him as QFC coach, he was on the recruiting path contacting quality new players to the club and persuading a group of Quairading players that were in the beginnings of their football career in 2008, to return to their home club, bringing together a quality squad for 2019. To Paul and this group of players’ credit, the QFC league team managed to finish 4th on the ladder, cementing their place in the first semifinal, this being the first time since 2010 that the club’s league team has played in the finals. Paul carried his enthusiasm into the representative level, by taking on the coaching role of the AFA Country Week Division 1 team. Although the team did not reach the successes that Paul may have liked, they did enough to remain in division 1 next year. Shaun Simpson signed on as Ressies coach after spending two seasons assisting Kyle Caporn. As a first-time coach, Shaun did an amazing job in the continued improvement of the reserves group, also taking them to fourth place at the end of the season and an appearance in the first semi-final. Unfortunately for us, neither team made it passed the first semi’s, but we have the foundations now to build upon and a great group of players, to go further in 2020. I’d like to thank our coaches and players of the 2019 season for all their dedication to the club. CROPPING In the 2019 season QFC was fortunate enough to once again have the lease on two 40Ha paddocks, the CBH paddock and Les Jones’s paddock. PAGE 60
The CBH paddock was seeded to barley. Thank you to Linden Johnston for seeding, Scott Walker and Rohan Hadlow for spraying throughout the season. Les Jones’s paddock is sown to lupins. Thanks to Craig Anderson for seeding, Brett Caporn, Scott Walker and Craig Anderson for spraying through the season. A special thanks must go to Terry Andrews, who kept an eye on both paddocks and was always readily available for advice when needed. And in advance I’d like to thank those that may be involved in the harvesting of both paddocks. Cropping is our major fundraiser for the club and all donations of seed, fertilizer, chemical, machinery and time ensure we can progress forward into the next season. Thank you to all involved. FUNCTIONS The Jumper Presentation was held on a warm Saturday evening after a scratch match. It was a relaxed occasion with a warm family feel. Having a meal and presentations on the lawn outside the changerooms gave the younger children room to stretch their legs and enjoy the evening. We welcomed our new coaches and players and unveiled the clubs new look jumpers ready for the season ahead. The Patrons tea is an evening where Patrons put on a delicious spread and provide all beverages to loyal players, supporters and volunteers and this year it was decided to hold this event on a Sunday after a fixtured home game. This seemed to be a popular decision with a larger number of attendees staying on. Massive thanks to our Club Patrons and their wives for their unwavering support. The 2019 Alby Mutton Cup, as it was branded following enthusiastic sponsorship and support from Gauge Roads Brewery, was held on Saturday July 20th after a thrilling game of football between the Bulls and Keller/Tammin. Thank you to the team at Gauge Roads who took footage and interviews throughout the day and evening and have been drip feeding publicity through social media in the hope that this event

is bigger and better next year. This event is a major fundraiser for us as a club and doesn’t happen without the many volunteers, organisation from our committee and those that run with the whole idea of the evening and enter sheep in the Cup and bid on those sheep. Thanks also to the Belles netball club for their support and hard work in providing delicious lamb and gravy rolls to keep us fed. ‘79 REUNION The last home fixture of the year against York, saw the 1979 A grade Premiership team return with partners and members of the club from that successful season. Almost the entire team attended along with the committee, which was the result of Trevor Alsop’s hard work and enthusiasm to make the day a success. Many stories and laughs were had over lunch and throughout the afternoon as teammates and friends reunited after many years. WINDUP It was decided that we to head to Greenhills, one of our major club sponsors, for our annual presentation and windup dinner. This gave our committee and volunteers the opportunity to enjoy an evening without the pressures of organising and the work involved in setting and packing up. More than 85 people were in attendance. Thank you to Rodney and Apryl for a most enjoyable night and a fantastic meal. Congratulations to Braden Hayes for taking out Best and Fairest in the Reserves and to Ryan Maldenis for winning the League Best and Fairest. Ryan also capped off an extremely consistent season by winning the Stacey Medal for AFA Fairest and Best player. Certainly a feat not to go unrecognised. In conclusion, I would sincerely like to thank the many Quairading Football Club sponsors who enable our club to function every season. It is always said, but it is very true, that our club could not survive without our sponsors.

It’s tough some days to get the positions filled, so if there is anyone ever looking for something to do on a Sunday, from manning the gate to helping in the canteen or running a boundary, you just need to come down and step forward. We will welcome you with open arms. Of all the non-committee volunteer work, the hardest by far must be organising and running the canteen, which Jo Hayes has done in her usual super organised, professional manner. Massive thanks Jo, for the enormous amount of work you put into this club, week in, week out. Jo was also instrumental in compiling and submitting our new Rules of Association and obtaining grant funding so that we could purchase a new canteen fridge and a water cooler. My biggest thank you is to the clubs’ tireless committee, for another well managed and successful season. A special thanks to Robyn Richards, whose dedication and passion for the club has driven us forward over her past 7 years as Secretary.
