FROM THE EDITOR I can see a light, shining in the distance. I think it’s November, down the end of the dark tunnel that October has felt like. Or maybe it’s a big ol’ star a top a Christmas tree, because FYI Christmas is only sixty one sleeps away (few less if you’re one of those midmonth Bulletin readers)! I’m excited for November. While many of you gear up to drive round in circles in your paddocks all day, or drive to town and back in your least comfortable vehicle six times a day, or play social sport like a full-time job, or lose your mind watching the countdown to the end of the last school term, or just live in small town pre-summer bliss; I’m going to get some work done. Ag Show is done, Curtain Raisers is (almost) done. I’m looking forward to just having a day job and that’s it! Bets on for how long that lasts... I have trust in the local postal service that you all would have received a little invite to a community workshop we’re hosting on Monday evening at the Quairading Club. We invite every single person to come along to Thrive to Survive and participate as much or as little as you like. We’ll be watching a couple of short films about “enterprising” rural communities around Australia and then having a good chin wag about what extra we as a community might be able to do. The Quairading CRC has been very lucky to jump on the tail end of some funding from RDA (Regional Development Australia) Wheatbelt to make this possible (which includes dinner for all attendees too!). If you need more reasoning than that to validate your excuse for hittin’ da club on a Monday night, just get in touch! The Banksia Bulletin has heaps of great reading material this month! Including, three pages from our OIC John Hancock on all that is happening in the local policing world, local election results (congrats again to all those who were not only elected, but nominated), a quick update from Main Roads and a couple of sporting club updates. Don’t forget, if your club or organisation are a member of the Quairading CRC, you can submit a full page of content for the Banksia Bulletin every month! Opening soon will be the new (it’s totally still new) Quairading Pool, for it’s first full length season! According to some that means it’s time for a wax and a tan (they must have good intentions of attending early morning lap swimming sessions!). Keep an eye on the Passion Sheet in the coming weeks for entry pricing and opening hours. Alright, I think I’m out of content, for now. See you from the stage! Slow down and enjoy the ride Harvest is upon us and the race is on again. Got to get the headers out and gather in the grain. Got to keep the pace up, the road trains in top gear. It's a crazy, hectic, hell for leather, stressful time of year. Everything is flat out from the farmhouse to the sheds. Answering the two way, taking phone calls, making beds. Cooking meals, drying grain, kids home off the bus. Moving gear from paddocks with a minimum of fuss. Harvest is a time to push, to drive the horse power home. To work long days, and sleep short nights, feel knackered to the bone. Two weeks down, stress levels high, the team show signs of strain. The chaser driver hangs on in, with secret hopes of rain. But harvest stops for no man, and the drive does not subside. The record year upon us at the forefront of our minds. Run the lunch out, wash the clothes, Fix the bust hydraulic hose. Ring the truckie, feed the chooks, Update the BAS and office books. Shift the silo, move the bin, Which ute was the grease gun in? Check the bearings, order fuel, Where's the mobile set of tools? Note grain prices, load the truck, Where's he got the chaser stuck?! Change the tyre, switch to Mace, Can we keep up at this pace? Test the sample, take the grain, To CBH then back again. Pick up parts, drive to town... AND NOW'S YOUR CHANCE TO STOP, SLOW DOWN Leave speed behind you when you put your vehicle on the road. Rebel against the rush and put yourself in back off mode. Make your car your sanctuary, and shut the door on speed. And from fast-paced harvest pressure let yourself recede. Let's get through this season, a community together. Avoid the pain road trauma leaves, the scars that last forever. Stuck behind a road train? Don't struggle to get past. When all those tiny seconds saved could end up as your last. FAREWELL QUAIRADING A huge thank you to the Quairading community for making us feel welcome 4 years ago when Dave and I arrived in town. Farwell to all our friends and work colleagues. On Dave’s behalf thanks to his mates and the odd beer at the shed!! Thanks to Sergeant John Hancock and his lovely wife Laura, we hope you enjoy your stay in Quairading like we have. I would like to thank Sharon and the staff at IGA for giving me a job when we arrived and a chance to meet everyone in the community. I would also like to thank Diana the HSM from Quairading hospital for my employment over the last 3 years. I am going to miss Diana and staff who have become such great friends of mine. Meningococcal Vaccine Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening illness caused by a bacterial infection of the blood and/or the membranes that line the spinal cord and brain, and occasionally of other sites, such as the throat or large joints. The incidence of the disease has decreased significantly in WA – down from a peak of 86 cases in 2000 to a low of 16 cases in 2013 – but now appears to be increasing again due to the emergence of new virulent strains of serogroup W, and to a lesser extend serogroup Y, meningococcal bacteria. As a result of the increase in serogroup W disease in WA over the past three years, a funded state-wide meningococcal ACWY vaccination program for adolescents aged 15 to 19 years commenced this year, and most of those eligible are receiving vaccine at school during the third term. Eligible teenagers who are no longer at school can currently receive the vaccine at community health clinics and some university student health centres. The vaccine is also available at the Quairading Medical Practice. THE VACCINE IS ONLY FREE THIS YEAR FOR THE AGE GROUP OF 15-19. FROM 2018 ONLY YEAR 10 STUDENTS WILL BE ELIGIBLE. Symptoms may include high fever, chills, headache, neck stiffness, nausea and vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, and severe muscle and joint pains. Young children may not complain of symptoms, so fever, pale or blotchy complexion, vomiting, lethargy (blank staring, floppiness, inactivity, being hard to wake, or poor feeding) and/or a rash are important signs and you should seek medical assistance. Sometimes – but not always – symptoms may be accompanied by the appearance of a spotty red-purple rash that looks like small bleeding points beneath the skin or bruises. EARLY DETECTION OF PROSTATE CANCER Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian men (after non-melanoma skin cancer). Prostate cancer is the growth of abnormal cells in the prostate gland. This gland is only found in males and is about the size of a walnut. The causes of prostate cancer are not understood and there is currently no clear prevention strategy. What is the chance of a diagnosis of prostate cancer? In 2010, 19,821 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in Australian men. It affects mostly men in older age groups and is rare in men under 50 years of age. The chance of developing prostate cancer is significantly higher in men who have a close relative with prostate cancer; the risks are higher if the relative was diagnosed before the age of 60. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, talk to your doctor. What are the symptoms of prostate cancer? In its’ early stages, prostate cancer may not show any symptoms. Symptoms of early prostate cancer can include:

Symptoms associated with advanced prostate cancer include:

These symptoms are also found in men who may have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. If you experience these symptoms, please contact the Medical Practice on 9645 1210 for an appointment. How is prostate cancer detected? There is no single, simple test to detect prostate cancer. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in your blood. It does not specifically test for cancer. Virtually all PSA is produced by the prostate gland. The normal range depends on your age. A PSA above the typical range may indicate the possibility of prostate cancer. However, two thirds of cases of elevated PSA are due to non-cancerous conditions such as prostatitis and BPH. If either of these tests suggest an abnormality, other tests are necessary to confirm a diagnosis of prostate cancer. These tests may include a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) which involves your doctor inserting a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the prostate gland. Some abnormality may be felt, but it is not possible to feel the entire prostate or a small cancer. A tumour that is out of reach of the finger may be missed. If any abnormality is detected you may be referred for a trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) and biopsy. Should I have a PSA test? If you have no symptoms and are thinking about having a PSA test, you should ask your doctor about the risks and benefits. It is important to balance the potential benefit of detecting a prostate cancer early against the risk that detection and treatment may not be necessary. Treatment may affect your lifestyle but it may also save your life. Make your own decision about whether to be tested after a discussion with your doctor. Quairading has been invited to be part of a program called ‘Enterprising Communities’ with funding sourced for us, along with over 20 other Wheatbelt communities, by Regional Development Australia – Wheatbelt. The workshop will involve watching several short films from enterprising small towns around Australia followed by facilitated discussion (with Anna Dixon from Creative IQ based in Northam) guaranteed to generate brilliant ideas and plans for how we can actually achieve them.

Remembrance Day 2017 A Remembrance Day service will take place at the Shire Memorial at 11:00am on Saturday 11th November 2017. At completion of the service, a morning tea will be held at the Golden Grain Café. Between the years 1939—1945, 173 young men from what is now the shire of Quairading, served in the armed forces of Australia. The very last of those young men occurred with the passing of John “Jack” Fleming Wilson on 9th October 2017. It is always a special day, but this year will be an extra special Remembrance Day as we reminisce about Jack and remember all those who served.

Hello and a big thank you to all those people who have made myself and my wife Laura feel welcome since arriving in town. It is somewhat surreal returning to the place where I spent my early childhood, especially living in a house just a stones throw from our old place or visiting the Cosgrove Farm where I spent many hours as a kid when it was owned by the Dall family. It has now been 8 months since I arrived and a good time to start writing a regular segment in the Bulletin to keep you informed of current local and district wide trends and points of interest from a Policing perspective. Background: Upon graduating from the Police Academy in 1986 I spent time at Fremantle and Brentwood Police Stations before becoming a Detective in 1991. The next 26 years were spent at the old CIB Motor Squad, Bentley CIB, Claremont CIB, Wembley CIB, South Hedland Detectives, Proceeds of Crime Squad and finally the Detective Training School. A desire to experience something new and different sparked the move that has seen me replace Shane Hickman as the “new copper in town.” As a uniform police officer in a small country town you are expected to be a jack of all trades and in that regard I have really enjoyed my move back to grass roots policing in a town where so many names and places hold fond memories. What do we do? That may seem obvious however, in this and the next couple of issues, I intend to give you a greater understanding of our priorities and indeed the priorities set at a District Policing level across the Wheatbelt. Policing continues to evolve however, protecting life and property will forever remain the cornerstone that drives our core function. The Quairading Police sub-district is part of a larger team that forms the Wheatbelt Police District. Our district is broken down into ‘cells’ that work closely together to provide greater ‘on duty’ coverage. As such Quairading, Cunderin and Kellerberrin Police, combine to ensure response to incidents that need Police attendance. Wheatbelt Police District 4 Command Directives To maximise and focus Police effort and resources, our district has implemented four command directives that give clarity to how each Police sub-district must focus our Policing effort. Those four areas are Reduce Volume Crime – Drug Offences – Road Policing – Target Priority Locations. These command directives align closely with a whole of agency expectation. I will start with the command directive that brings more people into contact with Police than any of the others and has been subject to many a discussion around the dinner table, at social functions, on social media and indeed in the mass media – Road Policing. As I write this article I have just finished work on a day where a life was tragically cut short by a fatal traffic crash on Cubbine Road, Kauring. Whilst not within the Quairading Police sub-district the incident was attended by some of our Quairading Volunteer Fire & Rescue members and by three Police Officers from York with whom I have developed a close working relationship over the last 8 months.

Protecting life, is and will always be, the single number one priority of every Police Officer. It saddens me every time I visit our cemetery at how many of our youth have had life cut short by motor vehicle crashes. Not long after I arrived in town my brother and I visited the cemetery for reasons that some of you will know. As we walked around in silence, we both were moved by the tender ages of so many and seeing the names of those we went to school with who had died as a result of incidents involving vehicles. This is a subject which you, the individual road user can have a massive influence over. Be honest with yourself every time you get behind the wheel and ask yourself, am I putting myself and others at risk by the manner in which I drive. I do not intend to list the countless number of factors that contribute to serious traffic crashes however what I will say, is the following driving offences are an agency priority, but should also be a priority for you, the road users; Drink Driving Offences Speeding Seat Belt Offences Use of mobile phones whilst driving I also do not intend to lecture responsible and respected adults on how to drive a motor vehicle. What I will say is that every Police Officer worth his salt will hold drivers accountable for their actions. What would a crusty old former Detective Sergeant know about traffic policing? Not as much as my second man Dave Atkins, but trust me I am learning fast, learning willingly and doing so with the sole purpose of doing our utmost to help prevent a tragic outcome that my colleagues in York were greeted with on the morning of Friday 13 October, 2017. In addition to driver behaviour it is also the responsibility of all vehicle owners to ensure your vehicles are road worthy and comply with the vehicle standards regulations. With harvest having already started for some we will see an increase in the volume of heavy vehicle traffic and machinery on our roads. I am reliably informed that Department of Transport vehicle inspectors will be visiting in coming weeks. Our roads present potential challenges not encountered by many of our city cousins; Livestock movement on secondary roads Escaped livestock Farming machinery movement between locations Heavy and long vehicles travelling at 100kmh International tourists travelling at speed in unfamiliar conditions Unsealed roads In addition to observance of the law it is essential that drivers pay attention to the following if you are to ensure the safest possible journey; Concentrate – stay alert Do not drive fatigued Drive to the conditions, especially in relation to speed Be patient, especially when encountering slow moving vehicles In coming editions I will cover the other three Wheatbelt Police District Command Directives. Money available – do you need some? Incorporated not for profit organisations and local government authorities are invited to apply for a share in $1 million of community crime prevention grants. This is a unique opportunity for police officers to partner with eligible organisations to promote the 20 Banksia Bulletin November 2017
funding and provide support to implement crime prevention programs. Grants of up to $25,000 per project are available for projects that meet one or more of the following priorities: Prevention and early intervention to address the needs of children and families. Youth justice and reducing re-offending. Preventing and responding to antisocial behaviour. Addressing and reducing drug and alcohol related crime. Targeting priority crimes in WA as identified. World Mental Health Day shines a light on rural mental wellbeing WA Farmers media release published 10th October 2017. The importance of mental health and supporting one another is being recognised today as part of World Mental Health Day, with WAFarmers encouraging people to take care of each other now more than ever. “It is so important that people working in the agricultural industry look out for each other and actively support anyone who is doing it tough,” said WAFarmers Senior Vice President Lyn Slade, who farms with her husband David in Mount Barker. “Farming is an industry in which people can often find themselves isolated or out of touch with others, whether that be through distance, seasonal conditions, financial pressure or just the nature of the job that may involve long hours of solitary work during busy times such as seeding and harvest. “Today, on World Mental Health Day, we recognise the need to shine a spotlight on mental health, particularly in rural and regional areas, encourage everyone to assess their own mental health, and help others to get support.” Mrs Slade said the stigma around mental illness needs to be addressed, and encouraged people to seek medical help and support in much the same way as with any other illness. “Farmers are a very resilient group of people, but this does not mean that they are immune to mental health stressors,” she said. “While we acknowledge that it is sometimes difficult to seek support from others or even admit that you need some help, everyone can do something to help shed a more positive light on mental health. “Sometimes it’s just as simple as re-engaging with others through community groups, picking up the phone to see if someone needs to chat, or participating in mentally healthy activities – campaigns such as Act-Belong-Commit and R U OK Day are great at encouraging these sorts of interactions. “It can even be as easy as making a mental health promise, which can be anything from promising to share your personal journey with family to help them better understand your experience, listening more openly to others, or ensuring your employees know the importance of mental wellbeing in the workplace.” Visit www.1010.org.au/make-a-promise/ to make a #MentalHealthPromise and be sure to share your promise on social media. 23 Banksia Bulletin November 2017

This month The Little Rainmakers have been focusing on motor skills, recognition of numbers and counting. Ella and Kaleb are practising their fine motor skills using our new mist painters. They found it a bit tricky at first, but with some support from the Educators they soon got the hang of it. The end results looked fantastic.
Hailey and Rhani are playing shops with Miss Catherine. During this play both Hailey and Rhani practiced their number recognition using the toy check outs. They then told Miss Catherine how much the items were on the table. Together they counted 'money' and gave change. This allowed Hailey and Rhani to practice basic addition and subtraction.
We decided to make Pancakes last month and allowed all of the children to measure out the ingredients. This is a fun way for the children to learn their counting and measuring skills. Hailey did a great job of cracking the eggs into the bowl. The children all had a turn of carefully mixing the pancake mixture helping them develop motor skills before Miss Sue cooked them for us. The children put fruit and maple syrup on top, they were delicious! 29 Banksia Bulletin November 2017

ASBESTOS WALK 2017 UPDATE Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia Walk for Research and Awareness 2017 Merredin to Perth, Monday 11 Sept 2017 to Friday 15 Sept 2017 Thank you to Quairading for your support for the ADSA Walk 2017! After the big start in Merredin the ADSA Walk Team was ready to get on the road. On the second day of the ADSA Walk 2017 the Walk Team enjoyed a welcome cupper at the Quairading CRC after a cold morning walk from Yoting. There was time for a photo break at Mt Stirling before we started with everyone doing some heavy lifting. The ADSA Walk Team spent five days on the road walking through the most beautiful country and welcoming towns including Bruce Rock, Shackleton, Quairading, Beverley, York and Northam. On the final leg of the ADSA Walk 2017 from the Wellington Street Train Station in Perth to Parliament House the ADSA Walk Team were joined by Prof Anna Nowak and the NCARD Team along with family, friends and supporters. The ADSA Walk 2017 is raising lifesaving funds for a scholarship designed to train the next generation of researchers and clinicians working on a cure for mesothelioma, the ‘Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia Phd Scholarship in Mesothelioma’ supervised by Professor Anna Nowak and the NCARD team at the University of Western Australia. The ADSA Walk Team have finished their part of the ADSA Walk 2017 by doing the many kilometres from Merredin to Perth but the ADSA Walk 2017 is not over yet with fundraising continuing until 30 November 2017. There will be a cheque presentation of funds raised at the ADSA Christmas Picnic on Sunday 3 December 2017.
