ELIGABILITY FOR FREE VACCINATION Everyone is encouraged to get the flu vaccine. Some groups of people are at higher risk of serious complications from flu and are strongly recommended to get immunised. The following groups are eligible to receive free government funded flu vaccinations:
pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy) children aged 6 months to less than 5 years (learn more about the flu vaccine for children) people 65 years and older Aboriginal people 6 months and older People 6 months and older with medical conditions that put them at risk of severe flu, including: heart disease kidney disease chronic respiratory conditions chronic illnesses that required regular medical attention or hospitalisation in the previous year chronic neurological conditions impaired immunity children aged 6 months to 10 years receiving long-term aspirin therapy.
Quairading Medical Practice also has PRIVATE STOCK available for patients wanting to vaccinate against the flu this year. Those patients are asked call the surgery for a standard consultation time, a small fee of $20 is payable at the time of appointment to cover the cost of the vaccination.

YOUTH WEEK WORKSOP WITH LUKE O’DONOHOE “The kids had a fabulous time!”
Y
outh Week WA is an annual state-wide celebration of the positive contributions of young people to our community throughout Western Australia. More than 100 events took place across the State last week, many of which received a Youth Week WA grant provided by the State Government of Western Australia through the Department of Communities. The Quairading CRC successfully secured one of these grants and with the funding, held an excellent workshop on Thursday 18th April.
With over 20 young people joining in, our facilitator, Luke O’Donohoe had his work cut out for him! The group was a healthy mix of locals home for the school holidays and visitors to our community. Participants learnt how to make stencils and cut their own from paper, plus a variety of skills and techniques using aerosol paint. Skills were tested at various stations and the workshop was rounded out with the production of carefully thought about masterpieces. Keep an eye out Big thanks to Helen Fraser for providing access to the Quairading DHS Art Room for this workshop (and GREAT facility we were happy to be a visiting host at!) and for sharing her expertise through the workshop too. Luke, and fellow artist Sam Bloor made the most of their trip to Quairading and have contributed two beautiful pieces of public art to our community. We hope you’ve spotted them if you’ve been in down town Quairading this week. The positive response to both pieces has been overwhelming, please keep all of the feedback coming! PAGE 16

QUAIRADING YOUTH CENTRE Great news! We have received an amount of over $6000 from Police WA. We are going to be running a five event program including a mobile skate park and laser tag. The Permaculture Garden is thriving and we recently held a class in the garden, it’s a nice productive place to be. The kids favourite thing to do is to put a yabbie pot in the ponds. My offsider Renee has moved on and I wish her much success in her new role. Without Renee the garden would not have been possible, she has left her mark on the Youth Centre. Thank you Renee. Do you like our new fridges? We have been blown away by the wave of positive feedback you have given us about the new fridges and freezers that have been installed recently. We want to thank each and every person who has taken the time to appreciate the large capital investment we made and to our staff who have had to work some long hours to get the new refrigeration up, running, stocked and looking fabulous. If you have been in store recently, you will notice that all the empty shelves have been removed; the fruit and vegetable department has been moved in front of the deli and much of the east side of the building behind the tills has been fenced off. If you have borrowed our toilets recently you might have also noticed that Jim Gimbel and Glen Jones have given the space a bit of a freshen up. In the next week, maintenance work begins on securing the ceiling and fixing the cornice in the space behind the tills. In the coming months, we will be painting the east side of the building and laying a flooring system over the existing floor tile. Once this maintenance work has been completed, we will relocate the entire store into this fresh new (ish) area. Sounds super straight forward and easy doesn’t it!? Let’s hope so! Pop Up Space: We have created a little shop front, and it is available for short- and long-term hire. We would love for you to promote this space to anyone you think might be interested in bringing their business to our main street, the rent is very reasonable! Easter Egg-stravaganza: Thank you to everyone who came down and supported our Easter promotion in store last week. We love how vibrant the store feels when it’s full of happy customers. We really live in the best community- to Helen Fraser, Terryle Bartlett, Flavour Town Catering and Quairading Fire Brigade THANK YOU for making the event possible through your donated time and skills. KNOW YOUR LOCAL CWA I was recently asked where the money goes that CWA Quairading raise in the community. I suppose you could call us quiet achievers in some respects so I thought I would compile a list for anyone who is unaware of what we do. These items are in no particular order and many are ongoing throughout the years. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) 12) 13) 14) 15) 16) 17)

We paid for the water fountain with attached dog drinking bowl located in the carpark opposite IGA entrance. Provided 2 bird baths for the hospital. We provide toiletry bags (with soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, comb and razor) to the hospital for persons who are admitted who do not have these items with them. Provided a laptop computer for the air rifles club. We fully sponsor a person between the ages of 17 to 25 to attend a Young Leadership Weekend Workshop; we endeavour to do this on an annual basis. We would like to encourage members of the community to nominate someone. We subsidised AVIVO to hold Yorga meetings in the rooms every Wednesday. We have held Mental Health Information days during Mental Health Week. We held an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Course, with all in attendance receiving certificates. A donation was made to the Harrison Woodcock Ballet Trust Fund. Education Scholarships are available for high school students and tertiary students. We provide welfare assistance to people in hardship in the Shire of Quairading. We also provide assistance to residents for medical aids who are in hardship. Each year there are scholarships available for rural medical, dental, nursing and agricultural students. With donated wool we make up rugs, beanies, scarves and toys for children in Wanslea Children’s Foster Home and a women’s refuge. Baby bundles are sent overseas each branch in the State do these. Support is provided to victims of rape in refugee camps. Costs were made by Head Office to assist a member to attend the National Association of Rural Mental Health in Denver, USA who was the only International speaker. This was also a study tour to learn about Peer run services in USA and how they compare to Australia. We have commenced an Arts scholarship for students who attend dance, music or other extra-curricular activities. Donations of jeans are made to the homeless. Bras are sent overseas to women who are unable to obtain them.

Linkwest calls for Federal Funding for Local Digital Support Services Across WA “Not enough funding for WA grass-roots organisations in federal budget”
L
inkwest, the peak body for community-led Neighbourhood and Community Resource Centres in Western Australia, is calling for the elected Federal Government to allocate funding for local digital support services in WA.
Linkwest CEO, Jane Chilcott, said with the default to digital services and the associated reduction in federal agency staff, Linkwest member Centres are spending increasingly more time helping people access federal services such as MyGov, MyAgedCare, MyHealthRecord, Childcare Rebate, the ATO and Medicare. “Many of our most vulnerable members of the community are relying on our Centre staff for support to access these Federal Government services. “This situation is further exacerbated in rural and regional WA where there is poor internet access, no public transport and the nearest agency office can be a four hours’ drive,” she said. Ms Chilcott said the current Federal Government’s budget handed down last week had not considered the needs of Western Australians experiencing ‘digital stress’. “We know from recent research that one in four of the poorest households in WA do not have access to the internet. “And many Australians, including the elderly, single parents, and the CaLD community face challenges in accessing Federal Government digital services for many reasons including low digital literacy and literacy and numeracy skills.” “This is an equity of access issue, with vulnerable and rural people being excluded from online services. We need the Federal Government to invest in local community organisations that can provide a dignified face-to-face support service to those who need it, with the dual benefit of providing local jobs in regional areas,” she said. Currently Linkwest Centres across Western Australia receive funding from the State Government to provide support to access State Government online services and Ms Chilcott would like to see the Federal Government follow their lead by investing $10 million per annum across the network. “The ability to provide support to help people access federal online services is already available through the Linkwest network. “Our Centres are well placed to provide this support in 150 local communities and respectfully request the elected Federal Government match this support.” PAGE 26

QUAIRADING ST JOHN SUB CENTRE Now on Facebook! Sub centre open morning: Wednesday 1st May. ‘St John WA – Quairading Sub Centre’ is now on Facebook. Our goal is to highlight some of the amazing work that our volunteers do for our community and within our community, as well as advertise and promote availability of first aid courses and events when they are available. Please feel free to like and follow us! Our next monthly ‘open morning’ will be Wednesday 1st May at the Quairading sub centre from 9am – 11am. All are very welcome to have a ‘cuppa’ and a chat and take the opportunity to ask your questions about membership, future first aid opportunities, talk to a volunteer about what they do or any other query that you may have. Our volunteers are always available in case of emergency, including over the Easter break. However, they would prefer not to have to see you over this time, and the sub centre wishes the whole community a very, very safe and relaxing Easter.

FARM OFFICE AFFAIRS The interest from both presenters and attendees at our inaugural Farm Office Affairs event was very encouraging and perhaps demonstrates the need to fill a gap. I’d sincerely like to thank Quairading LCDC and CSBP for their support of farming businesses and farm office managers by providing sponsorship dollars to ensure the day was able to happen, and I give a big shout out to the team at the Quairading CRC for their efforts, care and excellence in event management. Thanks also to Shire of Quairading for making the Community Building available to hire – it was an excellent venue, and to the Quairading Football Club for opening the Bull Bar and surrounding space for the final presenter followed by a networking sundowner. Approximately half of the attendees took the time to complete the feedback cards and from these we have some thoughts on potential changes for next time as well as strong indicators of topics of interest. These include – technology, superannuation, succession planning, insurance and shares – just for starters. We have completed an Expression of Interest with PinG (Partners in Grain) for their Paperless Farm Office workshop to be run in Quairading later in the year and we’ve been advised that the Farm Finance for Performance workshop may occur in our area after seeding. Both of these workshops were highly recommended by our Farm Office Affairs presenters. Our thoughts are to run a further Farm Office Affairs session later in the year and perhaps twice a year going forward if we’re able to secure some funds to make this, and more, happen. QUAIRADING DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL News flash from 3/4 Headquarters
Convict Day was held throughout term, the children experienced eating hard tac and boring old rice, they work in chain gains in the garden and even made a set of ‘cat-o-nine-tails’. Begging, stealing, pick pocketing, sailing over the seas, learning about the land was all a part of learning the history of Australia within our classroom. We watched, made and wrote all about the adventures of Captain Arthur Phillip, Captain Cook and the first inhabitants – Aboriginal people - over the term. Whilst the energy and interest was high, an excursion to the Fremantle Prison was on the cards. To say the kids had a brilliant time and learnt bucket loads is understatement. Moondyne Joe of course was a huge hit, the students had been studying all about him and even wrote news articles and poems about the cunning bushranger. Take a look at these...

Science has been a highlight of the student’s week over the term. Mrs Johnston has kept them learning and questioning with the theme of Physical Science. Many experiments have been had learning about electricity, heat, friction and magnetic forces.
ANZAC day of course has been on the minds in our classroom, the children absolutely love learning, questioning and listening to stories about the ANZACs. This year’s theme of course being all about NURSES we have leaped into the realms of ‘What it would have been like to be nurse?’. How you felt, what you saw, what you smelt and the sounds that surround you night and day. Then how soldiers saw nurses and how they appreciated them (just for the boys of course). Have a little read of this story we think you will love it… In keeping with the theme of nurses in Design and Technology the children are in the middle of designing their own wooden spoon nurses to use as a puppet, so they can write their own script for a short ANZAC play. We can’t wait till they are finished. And of course to finish off the term, it wouldn’t be fair without having an Easter hunt. The students also wrote persuasive letters to the Easter Bunny as they heard he was retiring!! They thought this was disastrous. We look forward to an exciting Term 2. It sure will be busy but busy is BEST!! PAGE 31

Term One in Art at QDHS
The 3/4 students have created their own Indonesian shadow puppets and 3D plasticine characters to learn more about animation this term.
High School students have repaired our minions, learnt about two Renaissance artists, created props and backgrounds for their school assembly and contributed ideas for the towns re-branding process.
The 5/6 students have learnt about self-portraiture this term and used different mediums and techniques to create their own on calico with chalk and permanent pens. PAGE 32
The year 1/2 students have learnt about 2D and 3D objects whilst exploring the importance of being an individual with “Elmer the Elephant� creating 2D masks and 3D Elmers, and wax-release paintings.

QUAIRADING KWIRA PIANO About 5 years ago I went to Ocean Reef by the sea North of Perth and discovered a Beale Piano gathering dust in a garage. I was fascinated and intrigued. It had been beautifully painted all over in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Quairading District High School with a logo that looked distinctly like a Quokka, which I’ve since learnt is a Kwira. It had an Education Department 6 Wheel Steel Undercarriage so was very easy to push around. The key pads were Ivory with each white note having 2 parts. Many of the Playing Pads were missing and the piano needed tuning. The 100th Anniversary was from 1913 to 2013. From the Serial Number I found that the piano was made by the Beale Piano Company in Sydney in 1933. In 1933 The Beale Factory in Sydney was the biggest manufacturer of Pianos in The British Empire. Did the Quairading District High School buy the piano new in 1933 ? ? ? Just before visiting Quairading for the first time - this year I found a Secret Panel on the back of what I have now nicknamed - The Quairading Kwira Piano. When I removed this Secret Panel I was astounded to discover 220 Grub Screws which could be tightened against the back end of every tuning pin! The Aussie Beale is the only piano in the world with a Steel Tuning Plank and 220 Grub Screws ! It is unique as it could go anywhere in Australia in the outback and on farms. If the Beale Piano was kept in a farmhouse room without huge temperature fluctuations and was played regularly it could stay in tune for 20 years or more. To correctly tune a Vintage Beale Piano today a Piano Tuner should loosen all 220 Grub Screws - tune the piano - then tighten all the Grub Screws so that the Tuning Pins cannot move and the piano is effectively fixed to stay in tune for many years. All other pianos have a Timber Tuning Plank so with age and temperature and humidity fluctuations some of the tuning pins may become loose and the piano untunable . I have fallen in love with Quairading having stayed at The Cottage next to the beautiful Swimming Pool and hope to become a Citizen. DANISH PORK MEATBALLS (FRIKADELLER)
Recipe courtesy of nordicfoodliving.com This recipe was shared by Sarah Caporn who was shown the recipe when the Caporns hosted Axel Søborg, Quairading’s most recent Rotary exchange student. We all know how good the IKEA meatballs are and the Quairading Co-op has everything you need to recreate them at home! INGREDIENTS 1kg ground pork mince 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup oats 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or plain flour 2 eggs 2-3 onions– finely chopped or blended 1 tsp salt Pepper according to taste METHOD Step 1: Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl using a spoon or hand mixer and place it in the fridge for about 30-45 minutes. Step 2: Heat some oil or butter in a frying pan Step 3: Use a spoon to form the meatballs. If you dip the spoon in a glass of water before you form a meatball it will be easier and stop the mince mixture from sticking to the spoon. Step 4: Fry the meatballs for about 5-10 minutes depending on the amount of heat you give them. It is best to flip them often to give an even golden crust. Step 5: Traditionally they are served with home made bread or some boiled potatoes. Sarah highly recommends a mushroom gravy and mash! *Sarah’s Expert tips– Grating/blending the onion results in a more authentic flavour. The oats are optional.

WELCOME TO THE BULLRING FOR SEASON 2019! The season started with a scratch match at home against Toodyay on Saturday 16 th March and the signs were looking good. We rounded out the night with the jumper presentation out on the grass, al fresco style. The weather was balmy although a bit windy towards the end of the evening. On the night League coach, Paul Dilena and Reserves coach, Shaun Simpson named their squads and announced the leadership groups:League: Sean Hayes (captain) with support from Haydyn Richards and William Hadlow as co-vice captains. Reserves: Alex Stacey (captain) with support from Dylan Johnston and Braden Hayes as co-vice captains. Round 1: First game of the season was against Beverley on Saturday 6th April (and it was warm!). Quairading did not bring home the choccies, not even the Belles, but there were good signs of things to come. Round 2: First home game for the season and we hosted York. The results were the opposite from the week before with the Ressies having a good win and the League finishing very strong with a big win over the York League side. It was very exciting sitting on the sidelines to have a double celebration win. Belles your turn Round 4! With the Easter general bye and our club bye, the Bulls will not play again until Round 4. Round 4: Sunday 5th May in Northam against Railways. Round 5: Sunday 12th May vs Beverley in Quairading (a great Mother’s Day outing!) QUAIRADING JUNIOR GOLF 2019 We are preparing for a brand new season of Junior Golf. We welcome back our junior golfers from last year, and we look forward to meeting some new members. Junior Golf runs during 2nd Term only. It is open to all children in Pre Primary to Yr 10. We meet every Tuesday after school at the Quairading Golf Club. You do not need your own golf sticks, we have a fabulous collection for you to borrow. All you need to bring is a piece of fruit/ snack, a water bottle, a hat and a SMILE! We are fortunate to have secured PGA Coach Mr Rob Farley who will travel to Quairading and take the kids for three coaching sessions. Valuable coaching teaches our juniors early fundamental skills to kick start their golf game. When the juniors are not having coaching, they are allocated a number of holes to play and the game is modified to suit their skill level. Our main focus is on FUN (and safety!) They walk the course in groups of two or three and are accompanied by a parent chaperone. Golf is social, fun and great exercise, for both kids and parents. Parent involvement is essential for Junior Golf. While you are welcome to drop your children off on coaching days and pick them up at the conclusion, all children must have a parent who is available to chaperone on ‘playing golf’ days. You do not need to know how to play golf!! It’s an enjoyable couple of hours spent with your children outside. Mygolf: Quairading Junior Golf is now a MYGOLF centre. Drugs and Alcohol - Your Health & Wellbeing is at Stake We promote the point that choice around our lifestyle is mostly up to us. While genetics, environment and the health system can also impact on our health and wellbeing, in the context of drugs and alcohol the choice is ultimately ours and the consequences of use and misuse are clear and so are the laws.
Regarding using drugs for fun, surely there are many other things we can do that don’t damage our body and mind (i.e. embrace and explore our passions and interests). Primary care is standing up and saying “no, it’s not all right” (culture). As a collective we can make a difference whether that is in the family, community group and/or workplace, you are not alone. As peers we can make a difference whether it be in the school, workplace or footy club by saying “no, it’s not all right”. We all have a right to a safe place!
