From the Editor
We’ve got an absolute stonker of a Banksia Bulletin for you this month, with stacks (literally) of pages of updates from all across town including the Shire, the school and the co-op!
Big thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to the chillest of vibes at our Community Sundowner back on the 7th February. A hot day provided a beautiful evening, a lush oval lit by flood lights rendered body clocks null with kids running around having a hoot right up until the last glorious song by Tamsyn Crombie was played at 9pm. Across picnic rugs and camping tables was a stunning array of local takeout (the talk of the town was the satay chicken pizza from the Club, hot tip!). Cara from Wheatbelt Face Painting pumped out two hours of glitter tattoos and some very smart mums packed plenty of games, bubbles and glow sticks for the little partiers! This event was made possible thanks to funding from the Shire of Quairading Community Grants Program and we can’t wait to start planning next year’s!
We’re closing out this month with a Suicide Response Workshop and an Ovarian Cancer Awareness Morning Tea both heavy topics, both very important and both with a great RSVP response.
We’ll then turn our focus to pulling off another excellent Car Rally on Saturday 21st March! We’re stoked to be collaborating with the Quairading Rainmakers on this one who are loaded with fresh and fun ideas, and plenty of manpower. Check out the flyer on page 19 and get your team registered ASAP.
I’m very much looking forward to a couple of brief holidays through March and trust our small but mighty team will keep things ticking over in my absence (as they do in my presence too!) but please bear with them during peak times :)
Lastly, save the date for an Understanding Financials Workshop for small businesses, facilitated by Enrika Grogan from Mind Your Money on Wednesday 1st April (time slot TBC at time of print!).
Happy end of summer!

KINGSLEYDIXONAO
Professor Kingsley Dixon from The University of Western Australia is an internationally recognised botanist whose devotion to science has transformed Australian native plant conservation. As Foundation Director of Science at Perth’s Kings Park and Botanic Garden, Kingsley shaped a small research unit into one of the world’s top five botanic garden-based science centres. One of Kingsley’s most notable achievements is the 1992 discovery of smoke as a cause for Australian plants to germinate after bushfires. Kingsley actively educates schools and communities across Western Australia with his engaging ‘Attenborough’ style. He also works closely with Indigenous people in Broome and the Western Desert to establish native seed programs. Kingsley has spearheaded Western Australia’s status as an international hub for mining environmental science, where he leads projects to lift mine rehabilitation standards and community conservation practices. Kingsley bridges research and action, advocating both scientific inquiry and environmental stewardship with a commitment to a nature positive world. Quairading Twilight Swim Meet
The annual Quairading Twilight Swim Meet was held on the afternoon of the 21st February at the Quairading Memorial Pool.
This is an invitational swim meet where Quairading Aquatic Club (QAC) invites many surrounding towns to come and compete in a competitive, but fun, low pressure environment. This swim meet is most popular amongst kids ages 7 to 12.
The swim meet this year was attended by a total of 8 towns, Beverley, Goomalling, Bruce Rock, Corrigin, Narembeen, Merredin, Kellerberrin and of course most of the Quairading Aquatic Club members, totaling 85 swimming competitors. Approximately 170 people went through the gates for this event.
The QAC members go above and beyond to cater for, and run, this event. It truly embodies the spirit of the Quairading Community with everyone contributing to make the evening a total success and Quairading should be proud.
It is QAC’s major fundraising event of the year and thanks must go to The Shire of Quairading for the in-kind grant for the use of tables, chairs and the PA system, Quairading Afgri for the donation of items towards the raffle and Koppo the Pool manager for staying late to accommodate the event.
It was such a positive swim meet. Everyone behaved in such a considerate, respectful and encouraging way. The QAC looks forward to running this event again in 2027.
Baptism, Confirmation, Welcome to Holy Communion & Home Visits & Communion
– St Faith’s Church,
Quairading
Recently in St Faith’s Church, Quairading we had the privilege and joy of baptising a child to be a member of Christ, a child of God, and an inheritor of the Kingdom of Heaven. It was a lovely occasion enhanced in no small way by the fact that we were joined by family members who were Christians from Lebanon, Armenia, and Jordan; you might say very appropriate on a celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany.
This celebration has encouraged me to invite others to consider whether they, or people they know, might wish to be baptised or have family members baptised. Alongside this ministration of the Church there might be young people who might like to consider being Welcomed to Holy Communion or older people considered being Confirmed in the Faith.
I visit members of the Quairading Anglican Church who reside now in the Aged Care Home in Kellerberrin; Parker House, Balladong Gardens, York and Kalkarni Home, Brookton, and the Quairading Hospital.
If you know of people who are older, live in an Aged Care Home or live alone, and would appreciate a visit or to receive Holy Communion, please do contact me so arrangements can be made.
If any of these ministrations of the Church are sought, please contact me by telephoning or texting 0419177178 178 or by sending an email to revdphilipraymont@outlook.com I would be delighted to speak with you so to make the necessary arrangements.

Gardening in the Wheatbelt
Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm
Summer has been hot but that is nothing new to us, what is perhaps a little different this year (so far at least, I would hate to jinx it, by speaking too soon), is that we have not had any heat waves lasting more than two or three days. I describe a heat wave as being heat over 38 degrees and a “wave” as lasting more than three days. Plant roots stop working when the soil surrounding them reaches 35 degrees, the plant then goes into survival mode, it produces enzymes to protect itself and when the heat stress goes away it takes the plant many days to remove those enzymes from circulation before it can go into growth stage again. To move into producing new leaves, new flowers and in some case fruit the plant needs time and water and definitely no fertiliser at this stage. This is why many plants this year are not flourishing but they are at least coping.
The March meeting of the QGLG is on Friday the 27th at the CRC starting at 9:30am. For this meeting we will have local bee keeper Damian Green talking to us about his passion for keeping bees. Joining our group will always be interesting and informative so do join.
It may be almost unbelievable to many but this month’s topic is growing cherries in the Central Wheatbelt. Unbelievable because cherries are considered premium fruit grown in much gentler climes. And for the commercial cherry growing industry that is certainly true. However, for the home gardener who just wants two cherry trees it is certainly possible to get good reliable crops here in our part of the world. So, what is needed to be eating cherries from one’s own trees at Christmas when prices are exorbitant? We here have been blessed with cold winters so the choice of cherry varieties is large. However, it is as usual, restricted by what is available in nurseries. And that is about four or at most six varieties of commonly grown cherries. These are Lapin, Stella, Bing and Royal Lee and one or two others. The Stella variety is self-pollinating and also aids in pollinating the others. It also needs fewer chill hours than the others, but as stated before, chill hours are not a concern in our inland gardens. Lapin and Bing are both good bearers and Lapin in particular bears beautiful large dark fruits. The summers can be a problem here but with some shade, good mulch and regular water during summer the trees thrive and produce well.
It is best to plant cherries in winter when the trees are dormant; they should be planted into well prepared holes. And they must pruned to two or three branches; a good nursery man will do this at point of sale if you ask. Then in spring apply fertiliser and begin a once a week watering regime. In summer the trees will need regular water to establish their flower buds. In their first year, in early autumn fertilise again and prune the branches back by one third, this should give about five or six main branches on a vase shaped tree. From then on, the only pruning necessary is to keep the fruiting branches short enough to reach the fruit. Cherries tend to want to grow tall rather than wide so pruning is a must. Chicken pellets or composted chicken manure and blood and bone fertiliser are all that are needed for healthy productive trees.
March in the Garden
It’s time to – take cuttings of bougainvillea; fertilise the lawn while it is still growing to set it up for winter; spread composted cow manure under camelias and azaleas; buy spring flowering bulbs and put tulip, crocus and hyacinth bulbs in the crisper so that they’ll be ready to plant in a couple of months; take cuttings from conifers by pulling off a sprig with a heel of the older branch still attached; trim
untidy spring and summer flowering plants like salvia, curry plant, Mexican sage, Kangaroo paw and day lilies; check indoor plant’ roots and repot if necessary, buy and repot native and exotic plants, keep well-watered and growing strongly until our first rains when they can be planted into garden beds; check the compost pile, turn and add water; check herbs, perennial herbs may need a tidy up while others may need to be replaced or root trimmed and replanted, some like coriander can be grown indoors from seed until cooler weather is guaranteed when the seedlings can be planted out; prepare beds for garlic planting which will depend on when the first rains come.
Sow – all winter leafy vegetables can be sown now so that they will be ready to plant out in mid to late April.
Plant – plant lettuce and silver beet they will grow quickly and be ready long before the winter crops need to go in.
Harvest – we are harvesting plums, peaches, nectarines, globe and crimson seedless grapes, black English mulberries, pears will be ready in about two weeks and the early apples will be ready by the last week of March; green olives will also be ready then although this year looks like it will be a lean year; in the vegetable garden we are harvesting very few zucchini and also very few cumbers, no glut this year; but there are tomatoes, capsicums, silver beet and rhubarb a plenty.
The last word – My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece.Claude Monet

Love, joy, peace and boredom – that is what the Christian life is about. Boredom? What do you mean boredom?
Well the Bible actually says “… patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;” (it is in chapter 5 of Galatians if you want to look it up) and isn’t that sort of boring? At least until you get used to it. They are ‘an acquired taste’ like olives and chillies. After a bit you start to like them. You even want to have them.
It is like the meme: “When I was a teenager I wanted to be an adult so that I could eat what I wanted to eat, watch want I wanted to watch and stay out as late as I liked. Now that I am an adult I find that I like broccoli, comedies and being in bed by nine.”
Every day in the news we hear about famous people who, back in the 1980s, had a friend who could make their fantasies come true. They probably thought that they were having fun at the time but for the last 16 years they have been waiting for the consequences. Not much love, joy or peace for them.
When you think about it, these things are what we look for in our friends: A little joy, a little love, not too agitated, patient with us, kind to us, good within themselves, faithful friends who are there when we need them, gentle when we are in pain and with enough self control not to dump on us when we deserve it. Perhaps our friends are looking for those things in us too.
