From th e Ed itor With the fog yet to lift and lunchtime rapidly approaching as I write this morning, winter is well and truly here—if not officially for another week— marking also seeding coming to end for most (sure, not all) meaning we can pack the social calendar again. June & July are looking busy and fun! A few big events for the footy club: there’s a Ladies Day this Sunday that’s sure to be a lot of fun, Barb’s High Tea on Sunday 17th July and the annual Mutton Cup on Saturday 23rd July. Check out event flyers on pages 11, 20 and 21. League and the Belles are sitting pretty inside the Top 4, with Reserves just one below, making it an exciting and pivotal time to get around the teams. The Hockey Ladies are also smashing it this season, sitting atop the ladder with three wins and one draw. A night out not to be missed this month will be Dean Misdale’s performance of their cabaret show, “Life’s a Drag” at the Quairading Town Hall on Saturday 11th June. Dean is a huge name on the Perth entertainment scene, with this show winning the Best Cabaret Award at Perth Fringe earlier this year, Best Show at Dubbo Fringe just last week and is set to go international at the Edinburgh Fringe this August. We’re very lucky to snag a visit to Quairading by Dean, making this their second visit to Quairading after hosting Balls Up Bingo for Seniors Week a couple of years back. This evening show will be a little bit cheekier and a lot of fun. The event is being organised by the Quairading Belles Netball Club with grant funding support from the Shire of Quairading. Tickets (which include dinner!) are $25 each, available from the Quairading CRC. Round up your mates and get your table booked! See page 15 fore more info. We’ve got a few great write ups in this June edition of the Bankia Bulletin including musings from Wamenusking Sports Club, the Ag Show team and a recent Winmar family celebration, plus of course our very reliable, monthly contributor to Gardening in the Wheatbelt—Carmela. We welcome your reports, articles and photos from all local goings on, so please feel encouraged to get writing! I can offer excellent proof reading and editing services (to your writing that is, can’t edit my own work to slave myself). While we’re a bit sad to see that Loose Stitches’ doors will be closing come the end of June, it’s surely a great excuse to celebrate all that a few local women achieved together! They turned a passion into a reason that visitors would come to town (by the busload!) to see, and that is no mean feat. May their venture be an inspiration to many more to just give it a crack—with a couple of other businesses on the market maybe you, dear reader, can try your hand at small business ownership?! Happy winter! Beverley Station Arts Invites you to… End of Semester Exhibition 1:30pm, Thursday June 16th at the Beverley CRC Beverley Station Arts presents, in partnership with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, an exhibition of artworks by Beverley District High School students. The students, lead by project artist Kaitlyn Elsegood from the BSA artist in residency programme, have created artworks based on the lesser-known history and life of Beverley. Gard ening in th e Wh eatbelt Written by Carmela Kriszyk of Eaglewood Farm May, the last month of autumn, as predicted in April has been warmer and dryer than average. However, there is still hope that by June we will have a negative Indian Ocean dipole beginning to act in favour of rain for the next four months. June is a beautiful month with still some warm days and enough ongoing rain to keep the soil moist and still allow for root growth. Autumn colour is everywhere; there is a tinge of green in the paddocks and smiles on the faces of those who depend on the weather Gods for their livelihoods and even on the faces of avid gardeners like all of us. The QGLG is meeting this Friday at the Quairading Nursery at 10am and we are looking forward to getting to know some of the new members. Plant of the Month – Rosemarinus from the Lamiaceae family is one of the best known and most used herbs in our gardens. Herbs in general have been covered previously in August 2020, however, this month I’ve been inspired to concentrate on Rosemary. It is popular for many reasons, it grows easily from cuttings, it is the most drought resistant and frost hardy of all the herbs and being a perennial plant which stays green in all weathers it makes an excellent feature in most garden themes. It goes well in a cottage garden, in a rockery garden, in a dry bed garden and even in a native garden. In her definitive book on herbs Jekka McVicar writes of Rosemary “If I had to choose one culinary herb that I had to take with me onto a desert island it would be Rosemary”. It is associated with memory and is still involved in studies involving senility. Rosemary is used extensively in the kitchen with roast lamb, on potatoes, to flavour oils, vinegars and other dressings. It helps alleviate hangovers and recover from long term stress and chronic illness. The essential oil is also a good insect repellent and rubbing it on the temples helps reduce headache pain. So all these reasons make Rosemary a must have plant for our gardens. But for me the most important reasons are how good it looks in the garden, how versatile it is and how good it is at attracting bees. Most will recognize the upright Rosemary with bluey mauve flowers but did you know that there is a groundcover variety which only reaches about thirty to forty centimeters tall and has light blue flowers. The upright Rosemary makes an excellent hedge which only needs to be pruned in early summer after flowering. The prostrate Rosemary makes a great edge to a rockery garden or groundcover under taller plants such as roses or deciduous small trees. Its demands are very few and its fertiliser and water requirements are minimal, it certainly does not like wet feet. As its name indicates it comes from seaside locations so a mist spray of water is all it requires even in summer. Its main flowering time is spring with a second flush in autumn which is what the bees are enjoying right now at Eaglewood Farm. It’s time to Sow – Because of the warm days we have had up till now there is still time to sow large seeds such as peas, snow peas and broad beans. Plant – There’s still probably two weeks left for planting seedlings of winter vegetables and strawberry runners. But more importantly June is the best time to plant, all native trees and shrubs, all deciduous trees, fruiting and ornamental and roses. Harvest – The last of the Kalamata olives are coming off this week, Granny Smith apples are PAGE 26

ready to pick as are the Pink Lady apples. In the vegetable garden we are harvesting bok choi, beans, lettuce, spinach, silver beet, carrots, radishes, late eggplant, capsicum and tomatoes. Things to do – Remember to turn off irrigation systems at the beginning of June. Prepare garden beds for rose planting, test the soil and add lime if too acidic. If replacing a dead rose remove at least half a wheelbarrow of soil and replace it with compost well rotted manure and soil. The old soil can just be spread in the garden. Remember that roses need at least 5 hours of sun to thrive, however, in our area and especially if summer water is limited morning sun and afternoon shade is good for roses. Don’t be tempted to prune roses in June wait until mid to late July. Copper spray deciduous fruit trees while they are losing their leaves. Liquid fertilise all spring flowering bulbs, vegetables and potted plants. Remember to water plants which are under eves and may dry out if the rain doesn’t reach them. Collect autumn leaves for composting they are a wonderful resource. Manage winter weeds while they are small and cute before they turn nasty and start flowering. Wattles are beginning to look beautiful, now is the time to choose a new one for your garden. Divide rhubarb crowns and Globe artichokes or plant new ones. If you have an empty vegetable bed plant a green manure crop, legumes and oats are good choices, these are slashed before flowering and dug into the soil to add humus and beneficial fungi and soil microbes. Wamenusking Sports Club 2021 - 2022 SPONSORSHIP We wish to acknowledge and thank the Shire of Quairading for their continued support of our community club. The survey also unearthed fresh vollies, some of which have attended a meeting or two and others just keen to help at show time. Winmar family gath ering Local identity, ‘Pinky’, Philip Winmar was pleased to meet and greet many family members he met for the first time, commenting “I didn’t realise I had so many relatives”. The ‘Bevan and Ruth Winmar, Family Gathering’, brought together five generations of family at the Quairading Town Hall. Family members enjoyed meeting and catching up on family news and enjoying an early Mother’s Day meal together that was organised my Quairading local Annette Bennell. Annette is the daughter of Isobelle Speight nee Winmar. On a rare occasion where ‘Pinky’, the youngest of a blended family of fifteen was affectionately acknowledge as the Elder, he welcomed family who travelled from Perth, Bunbury and Pt Hedland to be at the event. Another highlight of the day was the involvement of all family members to complete a Bevan and Ruth Winmar family tree. The family members worked together on the day to map the family tree which included ten generations of the Winmar family. The Winmar family are well known throughout the Quairading district and the ‘Bevan and Ruth Winmar Family Gathering’ will be the first of a number of future events to be held in Quairading.

What is Wordle – and how to win, accord ing to an expert Wordle is taking the internet by storm – and understandably so. If you haven’t played yet, be warned that it’s possible you’re about to get hopelessly addicted to this new online word game. There are so many brain games out there, such as word puzzles, rebus puzzles and your average brain teaser, but there isn’t anything quite like Wordle. You may think that nailing Wordle requires only luck and pixie dust, but there are actually a few tips to keep in mind as you go – and we talked to a linguistics professor to get to the bottom of it. Get ready to get your game on. What is Wordle? Wordle is a free online game created by Brooklyn-based software developer Josh Wardle. He initially created the game for his word-game-loving girlfriend so she would have a new puzzle to solve every day. Wardle eventually introduced the game to his friends and family who became as addicted as so many people are now. Sunday, 5th June marks the Christian FEAST OF PENTECOST which is a celebration of the Coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost Day and thus the birth of the Church. On the fiftieth day of Easter, God sent his Holy Spirit to empower the Church (Jesus’ followers) to perform the mission which the risen Christ had entrusted to it and them. As such, the risen Lord is no longer present to the Church in the body of his flesh; the Church is now the new body of Christ, filled with his life through the gift of the Spirit. FOUNDER’S DAY AT THE HALE SCHOOL marks the admission of the first student to the school on 28th June, 1858. THE COMING OF LIGHT festival marks the day the missionaries of the London Missionary Society landed at Erub (Darnley) Island in the Torres Strait on 1st July 1871, introducing Christianity to the region. In 1900 the Anglican Diocese of Carpentaria, which included what is today known as the Northern Territory, was established out of the Diocese of North Queensland.
