FROM THE EDITOR By the time you are reading this, dear reader, it might very well be winter! Bring. It. On. We had a good little session at the Club on Friday 25th May for our Thank-A-Volunteer Sundowner. There were lots of dedicated volunteers not there—so please accept THIS as a big THANK YOU for everything you contribute to our vibrant community. Those who were there enjoyed a drink on us and some delicious nibbles (thanks Ray from the Club Kitchen!). Thanks also to the Club for hosting us again, always so convenient and accommodating! It’s a busy couple of weeks ahead on both the work and social calendars, events galore are detailed in the 30 pages following this one. There’s heaps of juicy content in this June edition, I hope you like reading. There are some notes from the Quairading Farmer’s Co-op worth reading and a bonus page from me about keeping your hard earned dollars local. We’re also extending a helping hand to our many local clubs to get your new constitutions in order, that three year window to update is nearing its end (check out page 44 and 45 for more info). The time has come again for us to put a call out for phone book updates as we prepare to produce the 2018 edition of the local Quairading Phone Book and Business Directory. We update this book every two years and launch sales at the Quairading Ag Show (this year on Saturday 8th October). We’ve included an update form at the back of this edition, simply fill out the info you’d like us to print in the book and deliver, post, email or carrier pigeon it to us (any method bar telepathy is fine). There’s also an online form on our website for you internet-ers. Updating this book is a massive job so we greatly appreciate your proactive and prompt updates. Props to all y’all sports reporters, after a light on couple of months our sports pages (at the back of the Banksia Bulletin) are bursting at the seams with comprehensive reports from clubs aplenty—there’s always room for more though! May you all have sufficient rainfall and dry firewood for the month ahead. Yes I would like it both ways. MEN’S GOLF RESULTS On Saturday we played in the Golden Grain Cafe trophy. The event was stroke, 2nd qualifying round of championships, the winner on 70 nett was K Johnson. It was quite a tight finish with S Wilson 71 nett, G Wood 72 & R Hadlow 73 in quite windy wet conditions. This Saturday is Stableford, Monthly Mug. QFC REUNION CELEBRATIONS Saturday 9 June from 12pm Join the current footy club and players past to celebrate and reminisce on premiership wins from 68, 78, 98, 07 (reserves) and 08 (double!) What a great day this is going to be – so many teams catching up with each other. We’re trying to keep our

Understanding the difference between Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Diabetes type 1 Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the body's immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin and require lifelong insulin replacement for survival. The disease can occur at any age, although it mostly occurs in children and young adults. Type 1 diabetes is sometimes referred to as 'juvenile onset diabetes' or 'insulin dependent diabetes'. Diabetes type 2 Type 2 diabetes is associated with hereditary factors and lifestyle risk factors including poor diet, insufficient physical activity and being overweight or obese. People with Type 2 diabetes may be able to manage their condition through lifestyle changes; however, diabetes medications or insulin replacement may also be required to control blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes occurs mostly in people aged over 40 years old; however, the disease is also becoming increasingly prevalent in younger age groups.

HARRISON WOODCOCK BALLET April and May 2018 Update
D
ance over the school holidays was very successful for Harrison, and lots of fun. Early in the first week he joined in a Boys Dance Class at WA Ballet, taught by Craig Lloyd Sole, Ballet Master, for the second time this year, which was such a great experience. He and Scarlett also attended a class later in the week. I love the fact that parents get to watch the classes and afterwards the students and parents get to go and watch the adult company do their dance classes, or rehearsals for about half an hour. Their strength and grace is amazing, and inspiring. Harrison really hopes to join them one day. If you are interested in watching the adult company of WA Ballet practice, just check the website ( https://waballet.com.au/whatson/open-friday/ ), they do have open public days. He also competed in the Bayswater Festival of Dance, held at the Morley Recreation Centre over a week and half, and there were so many dancers, competing in many different genres and age groups. It never ceases to amaze me what children can do! The support of parents and families (and communities) are so important, as a three-minute performance piece takes many hours of training to build, and often you arrive at 7.30am to practice, and will not perform that 3-minute piece until 11 or 12 o’clock. Time is spent practicing, stretching, and networking! It was great for Harrison (and me) to catch up with three of his dance friends and families from when he was in the Nutcracker with WA Ballet in 2016. Harrison took part in six pieces, his Classical Solo, which earned a PAGE 24
2nd out of 20 performers, his Lyrical solo won an Honourable Mention (or 4th out of 28), Demi Trio – won 1st place, Pas de Trois Classical Trio won 1st place, Jazz troupe won an Honourable Mention, and in a Lyrical Troupe which won 2nd place. Some of the dancing was so beautiful, I was hugely proud to be there watching him. Ahead of him this term he has increased his dance training hours, so we are travelling to Toodyay five times a week. He has three competitions coming up in June, the Royal Academy of Dance Festival, DanceQuest, and AVAS (Avon Valley Arts Society – which is held in Northam), and on 1 July he and I fly to Melbourne for his Boys Intensive Dance Training at the Australian Ballet School. We have also been invited to attend the Lucie Saranova finals whilst we are there, a prestigious Ballet Competition where representatives from each state are chosen to compete in the Finals. I am expecting we shall see some truly amazing dancers.
We continue to be grateful for all the ways in which our community in Quairading and further afield, are supporting us. GRDC ‘Financial Decision Making Tools for Growers’ Workshops How do you make decisions about what you are going spend money on first? Would it be lime, stock feed, a machinery shed or a new header? You only have a finite amount of money. GRDC's Kwinana East port zone RCSN members identified that, after last year’s difficult season, they needed to better understand their constraints and how best to invest limited resources to give them the best ‘bang for buck’. They recognised that the health of farm balance sheets can restrict investment and wanted advice about tools and options to help prioritise expenditure - given limited capital resources. As a result, several workshops are being run in this region to upskill growers about how to identify the constraint with the best return on investment (ROI) so this can be targeted for farm business spending. The workshops will be presented by well-known farm business consultants Brent Searle and David Williams, of BJW Agribusiness, and will start in August. Brent has had a long career in the agricultural and finance sectors since graduating from university, and has a strong banking background. He is now consulting to a wide range of broadacre, dairy and horticultural clients in WA - focusing on farm business management services to growers and assisting clients to achieve their goals. David has worked in the WA grainbelt since graduating from university and has a core focus on farm business management services to growers. He provides advice to clients about production and farm business management and undertakes farm management services for absentee landowners in WA. Acting under such adverse conditions, these women proved themselves to be of awesome dedication. Reflecting on the role these women played it is clear the ANZAC legend transcends gender. We see their characteristics instilled in the generations that followed as our nation grew. For those that served and those at home – what was important in life was struck in sharp relief having lived through war years. The best line I’ve heard uttered at these services over the years I have attended is how little is asked

of us that we only have to remember the sacrifice of others. For some the sacrifice was a life cut short, a journey never completed. For others it was a life changed, the path altered forever and overshadowed by an experience only known by those who have served in armed conflict. I have no knowledge of what war is like. I have no real notion of the pain, suffering, fatigue, or sorrow this experience creates. And for that privilege I thank every man and woman who carries that burden. For that privilege I pledge never to be complacent about our history or the people that have shaped it. I am thankful that I live in Australia – a free and prosperous country. I am thankful that there have been men and women prepared to protect these freedoms with their own lives. There is no greater gift or legacy than that of freedom for future generations. In my life this gift has a human face. It was my Grandfathers and my Great Uncles who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was my Mum’s Dad who enlisted a matter of days after his 18th birthday, trained in Northam and served in New Guinea. He returned to Australia and never really spoke of the war again. It’s almost like he has lived two lives in his 91 years. One that we shared and one he preferred we never knew. It was my Great Uncle Sapper Douglass Thomas Davies, born in Yorkrakine, who was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore. They were transported from Changi to Sandakan in July 1942 and he died as a prisoner on 4 January 1945, aged 37 years. It was my Great Great Uncle who served as a Private in the 50th Battalion and was killed in action in France and now lies with his mates in the cemetery in Harbonnieres. It is my neighbour who was conscripted to fight in Vietnam. It was my Nan and her sister who travelled from Darkan to York to roll endless bandages and nurse returned servicemen convalescing at Faversham House with the Red Cross during World War II.

attending these services every year. Meeting to reflect on and celebrate the spirit of the ANZAC’s and to pay our respects is a ritual that has stood the test of time. Speaking of those that have now passed, that are a name on an honour role, sharing our family history, our town’s history, our nation’s history with the next generation is so incredibly important. Their sacrifice should be the strongest motivation for us to strive for a world without war, so that our future generations don’t have to share the burden so many have in the past. In closing, I’d like to share with you a poem written by Ken Bunker. “A tribute to ANZAC Day” With their hair a little whiter, their step not quite so sure Still they march on proudly as they did the year before. Theirs were the hands that saved us, their courage showed the way. Their lives they laid down for us, that we may live today. From Gallipoli's rugged hillsides, to the sands of Alamein On rolling seas and in the skies, those memories will remain. Of airmen and the sailors, of Lone Pine and Suvla Bay The boys of the Dardenelles are remembered on this day. They fought their way through jungles, their blood soaked desert sands. They still remember comrades who rest in foreign lands. They remember the siege of old Tobruk, the mud of the Kokoda Trail. Some paying the supreme sacrifice with courage that did not fail. To the icy land of Korea, the steamy jungles of Vietnam And the heroic battle of Kapyong and that epic victory at Long Tan. Fathers, sons and brothers, together they fought and died That we may live in peace together, while at home their mothers cried. When that final bugle calls them to cross that great divide Those comrades will be waiting when they reach the other side.

The Phil Hughes poem was written by Brock last year when he was a student in year 8. Earlier this year, the poem was entered in a school writing competition ‘Write4Fun’. Although Brock’s poem did not win a prize, it was one of many, from over 10 000 entries, that was chosen to be published in a book of Australian students poetry and short stories. The book ‘Horizon of Dreams’ is due to be published in October 2018.
ANZAC DAY POEM By Brock Macdonald There were three young boys who were going to war In their young lives this was something they never did before However, it was their idea nonetheless All these boys wanted to do was impress So the boys started their journey and sailed over the sea And eventually after long, they arrived at Gallipoli They jumped off the boat and they swam to shore The Turks just fired at them, more and more So they jumped in the sand and tried to avoid the shells There was blood, tears and plenty of yells The boys tried to survive the war But one was shot and then one more The war had ended, it was time to go home But the last young boy was all alone When they arrived, the crowd started to cheer But his only wish was that his friends were here The boy gave a speech because everyone called him a hero But he didn’t take any recognition, he took zero He said “I’d like to say to our soldiers who died That your nation won’t forget you, we are all full of pride.”

We’ve been looking at changing our Fruit & Veg supplier for some time, this exercise has not been easy but we’ve recently had the Fresh Food Brothers sourcing and supplying our stock. Their instore service and support has been second to none, the department looks great and the pricing is awesome! Come and check out the Managers specials instore weekly. Feedback has been positive with many of you catching up with myself just to inform me how great it is. “Thankyou” The Deli will no longer slice meat however we have Mondo Doro supplying a large range of pre -packed sliced meats. PUMPKIN, LEEK & SPINACH QUICHE A recipe from the team at the Quairading Farmer’s Co-op 4 Servings This recipe is vegetarian (no meat products) and gluten free (no wheat products). Serve with a side salad for an easy week night dinner or pack in a lunch box for an easy on-the-go lunch! INGREDIENTS 700g butternut pumpkin, peeled, cut into 2cm pieces Olive Oil Spray 1 leek, pale section only, halved lengthways, washed, dried, thinly sliced crossways 2 garlic cloves, crushed 100g baby spinach leaves 4 eggs 2 egg whites 60ml (1/4 cup) skim milk 80g (1/3 cup) fresh low-fat ricotta 1/3 cup fresh basil leaves (optional), to serve Mixed salad leaves (optional), to serve METHOD Step 1: Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Place the pumpkin on the lined tray and spray with olive oil spray. Season with pepper. Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until golden. Step 2: Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spray lightly with olive oil spray to grease. Add the leek and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until soft. Add the spinach and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until the spinach just wilts. Step 3: Line a 26 x 16cm (base measurement) slab pan with non-stick baking paper. Spread the pumpkin and leek mixture evenly over the base of the pan. Step 4: Whisk together the eggs, egg whites and milk in a jug. Pour egg mixture evenly over pumpkin and leek mixture. Sprinkle evenly with ricotta. Bake for 20 minutes or until puffed and golden. Sprinkle with the basil and serve with mixed salad leaves, if desired. PAGE 36

Loose Stitches Hello from the sewing machine and cutting table. May has been like every other month this year at Loosies, just so busy. We had a great bag workshop over 2 days with Robyn Dall, this very talented lady showed us how to make a tote bag and box bag. It was a llllllllong weekend especially as some of the group had played 18 holes of golf on the Charity day and a game of hockey as well. All the girls finished their bags (or 4) and were thrilled with the results. Thanks Rob. QUAIRADING RURAL DANCE May 2018 Second term has begun and we have a wonderful group of dance students that have been getting into the swing of dance and acro throughout first term, and are now beginning to learn their routines for their concert. Miss Jade is very excited about how well the children are doing, and looking forward to getting them organised for showcasing their talents on Sunday 2nd September (save the date!) for the end of season Show! Don’t aim too high because if you don’t achieve it, it can take a real hit to your progress. For example, “I want to be a body builder in 6 months” is aiming too high. Real change takes time and effort. Nothing in life worth having comes easily. A few tips for your goal setting...
Weight Loss When changing eating habits, avoid those tempting unhealthy foods. Keep them out of the house and when shopping don’t shop down the aisles where all the processed and junk foods tend to be. Avoid sugar and processed foods (not including fruit) when trying to lose weight. hen we now take photos of models, our members will now look like supermodels ourselves as we now have our club logo embroidered onto various items of clothing— we’ll all look absolutely lovely! We may be available for modelling ourselves. To make it easier, the members will choose their own colour of clothing and also choose their own items of clothing.
Our subject for the photo competition in June is going to be “monochromatic”. The idea is to take a photo that is based on just one colour and vary the tones. For example, a green based photo could have the colours light green, green and dark green. This will be an interesting subject and an opportunity to do some creative photography. However, in the world of photography, black and white is not recognised as a colour as they are both neutral colours. If it all gets to be too hard, you can just take a photo and simply convert your photo to black and white and it’s still deemed monochromatic. We are excited about our 10 Year Anniversary Exhibition coming up in the Spring. After the exhibition, for those who can not get there, we will be transferring the display to the Quairading Vintage Club and showing off our photos there during the Spring. Just leave your photos at the Quairading CRC and we will do the rest. We will also be displaying our photos aT the Creative Arts Exhibition this year. The photos will all be based around the theme “Australiana”. We are so lucky living in Quairading because it makes it easier to take an Australiana photo doesn’t it?! A reminder that we have a Best Portrait Photo Competition and to enter you need to enter your photo in the portrait section at the Quairading Show and we will have a People’s Choice vote to decide the best portrait for 2018. Your photo will be mounted on our trophy at the Photo Club Corner, where our photos are displayed in the Co -op window. PAGE 43

QUAIRADING AED UNITS “Automatic External Defibrillators”
An “Automatic External Defibrillator” (AED) is an electronic unit that can help restart a heart that has stopped. It is (as the name suggests) automatic, and features a voice over instructing where to place two stickers and when to press the flashing button. If you are near a person who has collapsed and might need resuscitating, these easy to use units are accessible in 13 locations and can be the difference between “Life and Death”. When a “000” call is made, the operator will explain where the closest unit is, and it can be used before an ambulance even arrives. The most recent addition to these was placed outside the Post Office this week, in an alarmed cabinet. The “000” ambulance operator will provide the combination to the lock when directing a caller to the AED.

A NOVEL IDEA Written by Peta West
I
t’s been another busy month at the library with the post office renovations happening and also another book exchange. Did you know that we also have a donated section of the library? This is full of books that have been kindly donated to us by members of the community and people are free to take them either to keep or to bring back and exchange. We also take donations of books and DVDs. We really are taking pride in our DVD collection in the library. It is ever expanding and offers such a great array of films to suit everyone’s taste. We even are fortunate enough to get in new releases. So with winter on the way, why not come in and borrow some movies to watch on those cold winter nights, or when there is nothing else on the television to watch. We also have some great television series on DVD. Is there a book you want to read or a film you want to view? We can help you! We have the ability to loan books and movies from other libraries within Western Australia. So as a library member you can come in and request what you are looking for and we will do our best to get it in for you. We also have a great kids section and young adult section. It is so important to instil a love of reading into children, so the library is the perfect place to kick start this. We have lots of plans to make the library a more enjoyable space for our readers, so keep an eye
out for changes that will be coming in the near future. In the most recent book exchange we received the DVD Running Wild with Bear Grylls. This reality television series is where English survivalist Bear Grylls takes a well-known celebrity on a 48 hour adventure to remote places in the world, where with the help of Bear, they are put in extreme situations for that period of time. This DVD features a number of celebrities including actor Channing Tatum who accompanies Bear to Yosemite National Park, where thy hike, climb and rappel of cliffs. It really is a fascinating series, to see celebrities away from the limelight and roughing it. So come into the library and get this DVD to watch, if you like it we can order the other DVDs in the series in for you.

STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE Council has had a Strategic Planning Committee in place since October 2017. At their April meeting several recommendations were made and Council has determined its position in regard to them - here are a couple of them. 1. CCTV FUNDING APPLICATION SUCCESSFUL Quairading’s application to Round 2 of the Federal Coalition’s $40 million Safer Communities Fund was successful. The Shire will receive $81 840 to install CCTV in key locations around town to deter criminal activities and aid in identifying offenders. QUAIRADING BELLES Written by Tamara Spark
F
our games, an epic Mexican feast and a netball camp with 11 ‘mini Belles’ have all come to pass since the last edition of the Bulletin. The Belle’s have notched up a win in that time and faced some very tough competition. Without a doubt all teams are stronger across the board this year.
Try as we might to tire them out they were still asking to play another game at 7pm! Their energy levels were maintained throughout the entire foray with the largely homemade delicacies of Claire Gelmi, Kelsie Squiers and a few baking Belles.
We are definitely looking the part in our brand new uniforms, generously sponsored by Ausplow. We received these just in time for our Round 4 game against the Beverly Redbacks and we had our first win in them, on home soil too! Somehow an aerobics class, 2 x full movies and pillow fight were squeezed in before a bed time had to be enforced! They were up and at it again by 7am, breakfast downed they headed out for a few more drills and another game before their official game against the Keller-Tammin Kittens. By this stage the signs of fatigue were finally starting to show but the girls played well and had a win. Quairading has so many talented up and coming players! I cannot thank all of the Belles and Mum’s enough for assisting and being involved in all manner of ways. Many hands made the load lighter and resulted in an enjoyable and skill building camp for the kids and Belles alike. If only we could have bottled the stamina and energy of the kids for our game! The Belles were approached by the Quairading Junior Netball Club to help run and supervise a 2 day netball camp. 11 buzzing junior netballers, swags and pillows in tow, were dropped off at the Community Building and Netball courts Saturday 19 May. They were straight into some drills and agility training under the able direction of Candace Burchell and Bec Wilson assisted by Belles in shifts.

QUAIRADING GOLF CLUB
Quairading Hospital Auxiliary & Royal Flying Doctor Charity Golf Day The successful fundraising collaboration between the Quairading Hospital Auxiliary and the Quairading Golf Club continued on Friday 18th May as the Golf Club welcomed many visitors for both golf and lunch over the day. It is a long lived partnership formed to successfully raise funds for our local hospital and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Having a field of 68 golfers and 37 for lunch, it was a mighty effort towards fundraising this year. The Quairading Hospital Auxiliary were well represented and made an amazing contribution to the fundraising effort. The donations of home cooked food to the stall, luncheon and afternoon tea and raffles were very generous. The raffles were spectacular and work entertaining the townsfolk who came up for a leisurely lunch was much appreciated. The Hospital Auxiliary has supported the purchase of equipment and other needs for our local hospital over many years. The Royal Flying Doctor Service celebrated its 90 th birthday with a flight re-enactment of the first flight on 17th May, 1928, the day before our event. It would be fair to say that there are not many country folk who cannot tell a story about how the RFDS has positively assisted someone in their lives by the provision of their incredible flying emergency room. The fundraising efforts for the RFDS are essential. We welcomed 24 of our friends from Royal Perth Golf Club who travelled up in force for the day. Other clubs represented were Bruce Rock, Kondinin, Corrigin, Wandering, Ardath, Surfside, Mt Lawley, Maylands and of course many local ladies including future golfers whom we always embrace. The golf was played on a dry course in warm conditions although the scores didn’t reflect this. The course has been cleaned up and maintained beautifully by our members with newly oiled greens and many freshly sanded challenging bunkers. Well done to the new captaincy team of Barb Bond as Captain and Di Wallwork as Vice captain and your continued mastery of the new computer system. The game flowed smoothly and was a great social day out! Our Winners: Natalie Kilminster, Bruce Rock & Tammy Wilkins, Kondinin

The catering convenor for the day was Maggie Hadlow, with all the club members cooking, working and donating with their usual generosity. Maggie rolled in with a car full of delicious food as did many people. It was a huge effort. Pauline Richards, Fay Minchin and Phyl Brown supplied beautiful flowers and greenery for the clubhouse and special mention was made to Sharon Richards in her new role as florist. Anne Johnson and her bar helpers provided cool relief during and at the end of a gruelling day. In conclusion, we take much pleasure in announcing that a total of $3,500 was raised which was split evenly between the Hospital Auxiliary and the RFDS. An awesome result! QUAIRADING FOOTBALL CLUB So 6 games down and we sit 5th in both League and Reserves with 2 wins and 4 losses each. Although this doesn’t look so good on paper, the boys are working really well as a team and playing a good brand of footy.

Unfortunately, injuries and lack of numbers are killing us on the field, with some of our 2nd’s having to double up on occasions, but hopefully in the next week or two, we’ll get a few back and we’ll be able to put in some competitive efforts all round.
Our Patron’s Tea will this year be held on Friday 22nd June. All our players and supporters are encouraged to come down for the evening and enjoy the great spread put on by our generous club patrons. __________________________________________________
It would be easy to get down and out with some of the big losses we’ve had over the last few weeks, but the boys have remained positive and focused on the next win and numbers on the training track have been consistently good. As have our supporters and volunteers, whom we would be absolutely lost without. __________________________________________________ BARB’S HIGH TEA On the 20th May, we held the second annual Barb’s High Tea, where all ladies who were at the football, the netball and hockey girls and anyone else that wanted to (from both towns) who knew, loved and admired Barb Simpson, were invited along. And boy, did we have a fantastic turnout!! Thank you to all of our wonderful chefs for putting on a most glorious spread to rival even the best 5 star restaurant High Tea. It was immensely enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Sue Outridge who was able to pilfer a pair of Steel Blue boots from work so that we could auction them off and to Sarah Hadlow for donating her pink pair back after buying hers at auction. The two pairs of boots were expertly auctioned off by Rod Simpson fetching a combined price of $500, which this year will be donated to our local St John’s Ambulance. A very fitting beneficiary given all the volunteer time they give to our football club.

Saturday 9th June 2018 Hamburgers will be on sale for lunch in the Community Building from 12:30pm for $5 each with bar open until 1:45pm. The Bull Bar will be open for the duration of league, until 5:30pm. After the games, the Football Club is putting on a Casserole Tea ($5 each) ahead of an evening of reminiscing, presentations, short speeches and good times. The bar will shut at 9:00pm allowing plenty of time for everyone to move onto the Pub or Club. All current players and supporters are welcome and encouraged to stick around for the evening.
