Unlike some of my winter-hating colleagues (continue reading all of this edition of the Banksia Bulletin to find out who they are!) my soul is singing with these chilly temps and delicious rainfall. If I could somehow just add snow to our climate (snow that didn’t frost crops or hinder vehicle use, science please catch up) I totally would. My second favourite thing about hitting the middle month of winter? It’s my BIRTHDAY MONTH! As the families and teachers of our community wind down to school holidays, we too at the Quairading CRC are heading into a semi-quiet couple of weeks on the activities front. We’ve just finished a string of epic workshops and events including the recent Grain Marketing Workshop and Agrimaster Workshop. Thanks to all you farming CEOs for supporting these workshops. We give ourselves big pats on the back when a workshop runs successfully with strong attendance and positive feedback as we know we’ve hit the nail right on the head and delivered something valuable. The topics of our workshops, events, activities and services (and any other word you can think of that covers the myriad of things we do!) are all determined by community need, highlighted through engagement of our staff and committee out in the community. That is, conversations between us and you about what you want to know more about, skills you’d like to build, events you’d like to attend etc etc etc – so be sure to come and tell us if there’s some little thing you have in mind that you need. Chances are others do too and together we can do something about it. One of our favourite – now annual – events is Cabernet & Canvas and we’re hosting our second “paint and sip” style workshop on Friday 20th July. Now, I hear some of you whinge that you “don’t have a creative bone in your body” or “could never paint something like that” and to that I say CODSWALLOP. Cabernet & Canvas is about doing something a little bit different with your Friday night and maybe sharing a glass of vino and a slice of pizza or two with someone you normally wouldn’t. The fact that you’re GUARANTEED to come away with a fully formed paint-on-canvas masterpiece is just a bonus. We’ve chosen a super simple (super simple) image to recreate, you’re going to love it! If I still haven’t convinced you, I give up. If I have, please call or visit the CRC and book your spot. It’s just $59 (for all materials and foods, BYO drinks) and we can even take your card payment over the phone. And lastly, we’re still riding the high of our event Women’s Business held back in March as it’s just been featured in the Winter 2018 edition of RRR Network Magazine. We’ve got a copy sprawled across our front counter, come and take a gander! If anyone can tell me the origin of the fantastic phrase codswallop, you’d be my new lingual hero. MIXED NETBALL This Friday 29 June at 6pm the Belles and Bulls will join forces for some round-robin games of mixed netball. Everybody welcome to come down and spectate. There will be a sausage sizzle and no doubt the bulls bar will be open. QCAS We have invited artist and teacher, Jean Arnold, from the Sandalwood Gallery in York to come to Quairading and do a painting course. This is an 8 week course and will be held on Thursdays from 10am-1pm in the Art Space at the QCRC. Start date to be advised. The subsidised cost is $100 per person inclusive of supplies. QUAIRADING CLUB Nominations are invited for committee position. 4 positions, each for 2 years. MENINGOCOCCAL ACWY VACCINE Meningococcal is a rare but life threatening disease. A meningococcal vaccine is available to protect against ACWY strains. What MenACWY vaccination programs are available? The MenACWY vaccine will help protect against meningococcal types A, C, W and Y Childhood Program The WA childhood program offer free MenACWY vaccine to children aged 12 months to less than 5 years. Children who turn 12 months of age will be able to receive the free vaccine at their 12 month visit. Children aged 13 months to < 5 years can contact their immunisation provider (Community/ Child Health Nurse, Doctor’s surgery) to schedule an appointment for their child to get the vaccine. Calling ahead for an appointment is important so the provider can make sure they have the vaccine available. This catch-up program will end on 31 December, 2018. Adolescent Program Year 10 students will receive their vaccination at school in 2018. Consent forms will be sent home prior to vaccination day. Adolescents aged between 15 and 19 can continue to access the HOW CAN WE IMPROVE? vaccine until further notice. Why use the MenACWY vaccine? Meningococcal disease type W was the type responsible for most of the recent cases in WA in 2017. The MenACWY vaccine protects for type W, Type Y, which is also

COCONUT OIL AND YOUR WINTER SKIN Written by Tamara Spark

hen it comes to coconut oil I’m the equivalent of that guy from my Big Fat Greek wedding and Windex. In my eyes, its hero status is closely followed by Bi-Carb soda and shortly I am going to bombard you with some of the ways I use these two products.

 

Firstly though I had a quick google of winter skin hacks, the top searches directed me to female marketed websites and beauty blogs that were suggesting the use of 10 different products, all of which were at least $50 a pop and would require a lengthy process every day.



  

Moisturiser Hair treatment; Khloe Kardashian uses this so obvs it’s amazing. Massage oil Gargle; oil pulling. Toothpaste; mixed with bicarb or activated charcoal. Bullet proof coffee Make up remover Consume the oil to soothe an upset stomach Cook and bake with it; der! I love popcorn made with coconut oil, a good sprinkle of sea salt and paprika. Shaving cream substitute Face and body scrub; mix with coffee grinds or sugar. Deodorant; mix with bi-carb into a paste and add essential oils) seriously it works better than antiperspirants! I used and didn't shower for two days to test it out for you. You may need to go through a trial and error process to find the right balance for you as your pits can be sensitive.

In the world of toiletries and grooming it’s a known fact that women's products are hit with a ‘pink tax’ and often cost 2 to 3 times more than the exact same or even superior male branded product. You don’t need $100 serums, day creams, night creams, buffing beads and seven step skin regimes. A THANK YOU FROM THE POSTIE

To all of the people in Quairading, past and present, who I have delivered mail to, I have almost completed 20 years of service as a mail contractor. There have been moments when the weather has not agreed with me, and there have been a few flat tyres - but on the whole, I have enjoyed the job very much. I first worked as a postie with Gorin’s in 1998, then here years with Margaret and John Martin. I spent 14 years with Janet and Glenn Smith, this was a most enjoyable time, sadly Glenn is no longer with us. The last 18 months have been spent working with Kellie, Luke, Bodhi and most recently Gypsy. It has been a pleasure working alongside my friend Peta West, and also for the past few months Conner. I took over the round in 1998 from Cal Leeder, he became my first relief postie followed by Arthur West and currently Mick Grage. ‘Mailman Mick’ will be taking over the round for me. I wish him all the best in the future. I will be back from time to time to relive Mick when needed. Thank you to Jack for my coffee on Mondays and to Edna for my coffees on the other mornings. On Thursday 21st June, the Quairading CRC hosted Shirley Brindle and Janet Pritchard from Keep Australia Beautiful to judge our submission for the 2018 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards. For the second year running, the Quairading CRC made a submission on behalf of the town for the state awards, this year with input from the Quairading Tourist & Tidy Towns Committee (QTTTC) and staff at Quairading District High School (QDHS). The Quairading CRC see value in being involved in activities such as these to raise the profile of our town, at a state level, and to give recognition and thanks to all those involved in keeping our community tidy, sustainable and progressive. Quairading has a long standing and successful history with the Tidy Town awards. The walls of our Old Railway Station are adorned with state category finalist and state category winner awards. Previous Community Development Officers (employed by the Shire) and QTTTC committee members, including the late, great Frank Burnett prepared the submissions over the past two decades and this is a duty the Quairading CRC are happy to take on and keen to maintain. HERITAGE & CULTURE A number of groups have taken actions in the last year to celebrate various aspects of our heritage and culture. Stacey Lamb Train Members from the Quairading Agricultural Society and Land Conservation District Committee (LCDC) joined forces to recognize the innovative achievements of the Stacey family and their fat lamb farming endeavors. In early 2017, the group nominated Les Stacey for Royal Agricultural Societies Agricultural Hall of Fame. The collection of info for this nomination inspired the group to do something local and public. A sign was designed and produced locally and installed at a gazebo south east of town (near the Stacey’s original property) to display historical information and photos. The gazebo is also home to a display about the Rabbit Proof Fence which runs straight through the area, as well as an old trap example. The Quairading CRC was enlisted to help create a digital archive of old photos and documents from 1942 – 1973 and also created a video presentation which was displayed by the LCDC at the Ag Show in October 2017. Last year they did very well at the local Quairading Ag Show winning several first and second prizes competing against the adults. 33 communities have entered the awards this year. All category finalists will be notified in August and invited to the Tidy Towns State Awards Presentation in Perth on Friday 21st September—fingers crossed we make it! GRAIN MARKETING GAINS Grain marketing is always something that seemed very complicated to me, there are so many options and prices are always fluctuating! I always thought that it seemed too complicated to involve myself in. I had been encouraged to learn more about it by our farm financial adviser though, so when the Quairading CRC advertised a ‘Grain Marketing Workshop’ I thought, why not? I am so glad that I did attend the workshop. It was run by two representatives from CBH and a representative from Daily Grain, all of which were friendly and informative. I learned how to track grain prices as well as set up alerts to tell me when prices hit a hoped for price (very convenient!!) and it provided me with more confidence when navigating grain markets and options. Amy Fuchsbichler from CBH also provided us with an Excel document that allows producers to create a grain marketing plan by determine breakeven prices based on a range of expected yields. This is fantastic as you can establish your minimal price per tonne needed as well as track grain sales! Thank you to the CRC for organising the workshop and Jill for her incredible baking. BECOMING THE MASTER I don’t know if it is the teacher in me, the desire to better contribute to our business or if I am a workshop groupie, but I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to attend the Agrimaster Workshop run at the CRC! Having used it for a few years, I did wonder how much I would actually take away from the workshop, but I felt I should attend in case there were a few tricks I could pick up.

There were nine of us in total (with different levels of experience) as well as our lovely presenter Julie to take us through and answer questions. I have to say this workshop was excellent. I went in thinking I was efficient at using the program and walked out feeling like a master. I learned many new skills for using Agrimaster that will make me more organised and efficient in the office and that will allow me to keep better business records. If you use Agrimaster at home and haven’t attended a workshop, this is the one you should go to! It’s a good chance to network, ask questions that have bugged you and you walked away with cheat sheets and a skill upgrade at the same time. Sometimes we all get used to doing things a certain way and don’t even realise that there may be a better way to do it, until someone comes along and shows you how. This was definitely one of those moments for me. Thank you once again to the Quairading CRC and Julie for hosting another great workshop and Jill (and team) again for the incredible food. Australians lost $340 million to scammers in 2017

ustralians lost more money to scammers in 2017 than in any other year since the ACCC began reporting on scam activity.

According to the ACCC’s ninth annual Targeting scams report(link is external), released today, more than 200,000 scam reports were submitted to the ACCC, Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) and other federal and state-based government agencies in 2017. Total losses reported were $340 million – a $40 million increase compared to 2016. This is the first time reported losses to scams have totalled more than $300 million and demonstrates the increasing impact of scams on Australians. Investment scams topped the losses at $64 million, an increase of more than 8 per cent. Dating and romance scams caused the second greatest losses at $42 million.

However our range, the number of people we employ, the work experience opportunities of our younger generation and the availability of specials will be affected if we are not supported. The Co-op supports many community events and greatly supports our local sporting clubs with a range of donations these can only continue with support! The Co-op needs to evolve not only with the economic climate but the population decline. We are seeing some country towns and metro small areas lose their grocery stores. This is something our community never thinks nor imagines the possibility of it happening to us. The last financial year has been our toughest yet (in my time) and we need your support. We can all find reasons as to why we shop elsewhere but at the end of the day we use it or lose it.

SALMON & RICE MORNEY A recipe from the team at the Quairading Farmer’s Co-op 4 Servings

Words by Tamara Spark, Quairading CRC: Affordable wintery meals are where its at right now (in this god forsaken never ending cold hell that is winter in Quairading!). Apologies for my blasphemous outburst but I am a child of Summer and just ‘can’t even’ right now.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup rice 415g can pink salmon 60g butter 1 onion, chopped 1 carrot, chopped This Salmon and rice mornay 100% meets these 1 stick celery, chopped requirements: 2 tsp seeded mustard Comfort food (tick). 1/4 cup flour Feeds a family of 4 for under $25 (tick). 375ml can evaporated milk 1/2 cup water Plus it consists of mainly pantry and freezer Salt & pepper staples. Alright, you might not usually keep 2 cups breadcrumbs evaporated milk as a staple but it’s tinned and 1/2 cup grated tasty cheese (or if you are a normal human being double this) long life, so it’s something you can grab on 60g butter, extra, melted. your weekly shop and store for one of those evenings that you’re lacking inspiration and forgot to grab something out of the freezer to METHOD defrost that morning. Step 2: Drain salmon, reserve liquid. Step 3: Heat butter in a pan, add onion, carrot and celery and cook for 5 mins, add mustard and flour to the pan and cook for an addition minute. Step 4: Gradually add the evaporated milk, water and reserved salmon liquid and bring to the boil stirring, add salmon, salt and pepper, simmer for 2 minutes. Step 5: Pour over rice, top with combined remaining ingredients. Place in 200°C oven for 15 minutes until golden.

PROPOSED LAND TAX AND TRANSFER DUTY REFORM On 14 June 2018 the Minister for Regional Development; Agriculture and Food and the Minister for Finance announced that the State government had agreed to extend the land tax exemption for primary production businesses to include contract farming businesses and, further, to reform the Duties Act family farm exemption to enable the progressive transition of a farm to a family member without significant transfer duty costs occasioned by the intergenerational transfer of farming lands. Valenti Lawyers considers both of these proposed reforms will be of significant benefit both to contract farming businesses and family farmers and is pleased to see that these reforms are proposed. The current interpretation of the Land Tax Assessment Act, by the Office of State Revenue, does not allow the land tax exemption for primary production businesses for certain contract farming businesses that rear animals owned by a third party on land owned by the contract farmer. The proposed reforms will extend

the land tax exemption to those contract farming business owners thus reducing the financial burden to those businesses. The proposed reforms to the Duties Act family farm exemption will be of significant benefit to farming families if it makes the process and procedure to obtain the transfer duty exemption easier and more equitable. Currently, the process and procedure is very complex and it is difficult for farming families to gain the exemption in light of current business structures properly adopted by farming families in Western Australia. WARRIOR WELLBEING “Making Sense of Diabetes” The cells in our bodies such as those found in our muscles need energy to grow and do what they do. One source of energy starts when we eat carbohydrate rich food such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit, milk and yoghurt. In a normal situation these foods are broken down in our digestive system into glucose, a sugar. This sugar is what is needed by the cells, but it can’t get into them without a special key insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas and its job is to regulate the amount of glucose in the blood.

Type 1 is the least common form of diabetes and characterised by an early and sudden onset usually before the age of 20. In this instance a person’s immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that create insulin. As a result, these people need to inject insulin regularly to supplement the deficiency.

Type 2 is the most common form (above 80%) and usually a late gradual onset affecting adults. People with this condition produce enough insulin but their cells are not responsive and can’t take up the glucose.
